Well winter is definitely here and so are the dreaded colds and the flu. These are viral infections affecting the nose, sinuses, throat and airways. Antibiotics are of no use against viral infections but there are some simple things you can do to help yourself:

• Get plenty of rest and sleep and stay comfortably warm• Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and to thin mucus• Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing

Proceeds from The Weekend will support ground breaking, critical cancer research at QIMR Berghofer. QIMR Berghofer researchers are working to develop accurate diagnostics as well as new, targeted treatments and much more. Funds raised will also help Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, home of Queensland’s largest Cancer Care Service, purchase vital pieces of equipment and fund world-class clinical research conducted at the hospital.

The Albany Creek Swim Club has enjoyed another very successful season. Our most recent success being a 39th place finish at Australian Age Nationals in Sydney. Rory Scott won our first Age National Gold medal in many years along with bronze medals to Hannah Beighton and Dan Jacobson.The club also had 5 talented swimmers at 2014 Australian Swimming Championships held in Brisbane recently. These were: Aisling Scott, Hannah Beighton, Ridge Grimsey, Cameron Joyes and Stuart Lester. ACSC finished this wonderful season with 3rd position in the BSA Premiership Division.

All Saints School was established in 1989 to provide a quality Catholic Education to the students of Albany Creek, Eatons Hill and surrounding areas. It has grown into a medium size school of over 700 students.

The committed and caring staff, work closely with parents to provide a well-rounded education for its students. All Saints School has embraced the Australian Curriculum as well as the latest research in how to improve student learning.

All Saints School has a comprehensive Religious Education pro-gram. The faith life of all students is nurtured through oppor-tunities to be involved in prayer and liturgy, as well as being in-volved in opportunities to support the different charity groups within our community.

All classrooms are air conditioned to enhance the environment for student learning. There are two computer labs – once mac and one PC. All classrooms have access to laptops, desktops, iP-ads and iPods. A one to one iPad program is being rolled out in year 5 2014. Year 6 students now visit Canberra each year. Our library has ten learning spaces to provide a range of differ-ent learning environments for our students. There are extensive grounds and covered spaces for outdoor learning.

There are comprehensive music, instrumental music and sports programs available for all students. Students can join a variety of choirs, learn a string, woodwind, brass or percussion instrument, as well as have an opportunity to learn the recorder and ukulele in classroom music lessons. All Saints students are involved in both State and Catholic Sport competitions.

This September, Redcliffe will shine brighter than ever before when it hosts the inaugural Redcliffe Festival boasting five unique events and concerts over three massive days (5-7 September).

Our Village Foundation in partnership with the Moreton Bay Regional Council and community stakeholders, have captured the vibrancy and diversity of the Redcliffe Peninsula and its illustrious history in a weekend program of free and ticketed events, celebrity guests, live music and family friendly entertainment.

The Redcliffe Festival will merge two of the Peninsula’s most successful events, the Redcliffe KiteFest and Celebrate Redcliffe (formerly known as Redcliffe First Settlement Festival) as well as introduce a number of new components, into one major event aimed at attracting the important tourist dollar. Kicking off the festival weekend on Friday, 5 September will be two massive concerts held at Pelican Park, Clontarf. Spring Break Beach Party will be the biggest dance party to hit the Peninsula and will be headlined by Australia’s singing and dancing sensations Justice Crew, plus

stacks of other entertainment including unlimited access to 14 big thrill carnival rides all included in the price of the ticket.

The Southern end of Pelican Park will host the 18+ KiteFest LIVE concert, which is headlined by some of Australia’s biggest acts. “KiteFest LIVE will be the ultimate outdoor concert with Aussie rock legends Mark Seymour from Hunters and Collectors, Daryl Braithwaite and the Choirboys sharing the same stage for one night only, to perform some of Australia’s best-known anthems,” Mr Newcombe said. Helping Hands, helping the communityThe Charter Hall Albany Creek Square Helping Hands initiative provides monthly grants of $500 to local community groups. If your community group would like to be considered for a Helping Hands grant, download the application form at www.albanycreeksquare.com.au/whatson

Albany Creek State School P & C Association is the most recent and very worthy recipient of Charter Hall’s monthly Helping Hands grant. The Albany Creek State School P & C Association provides financial assistance or other resources and services for the benefits of students of the school. The goal of the association is to encourage closer co-operation between parents, the community staff and students of the school.

The Association provides its Hall for free to other non-profit organisations and hires it at a minimal fee to all community clubs. They have a range of equipment such as fairy floss machines which they lend free of charge to other organisations.

P & C President, Kerri-Lee Halas advised that the $500 Community Grant will enable the P & C Association to provide financial support to the Albany Creek State School for its bi-annual Winter Carnival which was held on the 26th July.

The Brisbane property market is still experiencing very strong buyer demands and as a result some great prices are still being achieved for properties in our area. The average time on market is down to 18 days in some areas, and in many cases homes are being sold in the first few days for fantastic prices.

RP Data research director Tim Lawless said Brisbane’s housing market was starting to gather pace with homes in the middle price range doing well across all states. He did not predict any significant drop in housing values for as long as interest rates remained low.

“Dwelling values at the most affordable end of the capital city housing markets have moved 8.8 per cent higher during the past year compared with a 10.3 per cent capital gain across the most expensive suburbs and a 10.6 per cent increase across the broad middle of the capital city market,’’ he said.

I believe a strong factor to the market being so strong is that the cash rate remains at 2.5 per cent, where it has been since a quarter of a percentage point cut in August last year. With low interest rates, people are taking advantage and choosing to upsize or sell and relocate.

RP Data research director Tim Lawless said Brisbane’s housing market was starting to gather pace with homes in the middle price range doing well across all states. He did not predict any significant drop in housing values for as long as interest rates remained low.

“Dwelling values at the most affordable end of the capital city housing markets have moved 8.8 per cent higher during the past year compared with a 10.3 per cent capital gain across the most expensive suburbs and a 10.6 per cent increase across the broad middle of the capital city market,’’ he said.

I believe a strong factor to the market being so strong is that the cash rate remains at 2.5 per cent, where it has been since a quarter of a percentage point cut in August last year. With low interest rates, people are taking advantage and choosing to upsize or sell and relocate.
