Albany Area Chamber Endorses Measure 103 and Measure 104Vote Yes – And Take A Stand Against Tax Hikes

Measure 103 would prohibit state and local taxes on groceries. If approved, the measure would permanently block taxes on groceries without specific voter approval. In 2016 Oregonians defeated Ballot Measure 97, a measure that would have placed a $3 billion dollar gross receipts tax on businesses. A tax that would be passed on to everyone that purchases groceries, products, etc. Grocers are concerned that the gross receipts tax could come up again, severely impacting the average household. This ballot measure does not repeal or stop taxes on alcohol, marijuana or tobacco products. The Albany Area Chamber joins a long list of supporters of Measure 103 and against taxing groceries. Vote Yes on Measure 103

Measure 104 would require the legislature to have a three-fifths majority to pass Any tax or fee increase. This includes tax/fee exemptions, tax/fee credits or tax/fee deductions. Passage of Measure 104 will clarify the law in the Constitution and require a three-fifths super majority vote for any legislation that raises revenue. Over 20 years ago Oregonians voted to make sure there was a three-fifths majority on any legislation that raises revenue. Passage of Measure 104 ensures there is a bipartisan discussion and support for any new revenue for the state. Vote Yes on Measure 104.

James RamseyerConsumers Power, Inc.2018-2019 Board Chair

Message From The Chair

We’ve all had to deal with mistakes, oversights, miscalculations and failures both professionally and in our personal lives. I’ve worked hard over the years staying focused on the future and what’s possible while retaining the facts and lessons learned from the failures of the past. Recently I found myself stuck in the past when someone I have great respect for said, “Rearview mirrors are a good thing, but you can’t drive with them.”

That’s a great understanding of a problem we all deal with. We’ve all found ourselves saying, “I’ll never do that again” only to find that we’re doing the same thing a short time later. Making the same mistakes over and over can be costly in more ways than one. However we can take steps to learn from mistakes and gain wisdom that will help to avoid repeating them again in the future.

The first thing to do is take responsibility for the error and your role in the outcome. While that is certainly uncomfortable at times, without it we’re not ready to change.

It’s never healthy to dwell on mistakes but reflecting and learning from them is how to avoid the same result again. Asking ourselves tough questions like “what went wrong”, “how can I do better next time”, “how would others approach this” and “what did I learn from this mistake” will give a strong foundation for avoiding the error in the future.

Now that we’re done remembering the past it’s time to spend the majority of our time making a plan and focusing on the future. Your plan should be as detailed as possible but remain flexible to adhere to changes that may arise. During this phase make sure to identify any skills or resources that might help avoid or manage similar mistakes in the future.

Congratulations, Students of the Month! As Co-CEO of EnerG2, Dr. Kirill Bramnik helps lead the executive team through development and execution of strategies to facilitate rapid growth as a new member of part of the BASF family of businesses. With his extensive experience from BASF's energy storage materials businesses, Kirill brings deep operational expertise along with an entrepreneurial mindset enabling EnerG2 to continue rapid growth on the BASF foundation of stability and resources.

Kirill began his career as a Materials Science Research Assistant at Darmstadt, University of Technology in Germany. Following his time in academia, Kirill began his career at BASF, holding positions from Research Scientist to Global Director of Technology for Battery Materials. Throughout his career at BASF, Kirill has managed the strategic d e ve l opm e nt an d t a c t i c a l implementation of R&D and product technology activities required to establish, grow and sustain the Battery Materials business unit at BASF.

Kirill earned an M.S. in Chemistry from Lomonosov Moscow State University and a Ph.D. in Materials S c i e n c e f r o m D a r m s t a d t Univers i ty of Technolog y, Germany.

The energy storage market is booming with double-digits market growth rates. I don't foresee this trend changing in the short- or mid-term because of the cont inued development of consumer electronics market and the global adoption of technology (Smartphones, tablets, etc.).

The energy storage market will continue in an aggressive growth mode because of increases in technological and competitive pressure to deliver a better and more affordable technical solution on the material and system level. Furthermore, energy storage innovation opportunities will remain widespread in the future because of regulation driven emission-control requirements for the automotive market (start-stop, e-cars etc.).

Thank You Premier Sponsors:

Hats off to the businesses who showcased their products and services at the 2018 Albany Business Extravaganza! The sold-out event attracted over 1500 attendees and by all accounts was a huge success. PersonAl: I was born in Long Beach, CA. and raised in the San Francisco Bay area. At age nine my parents enrolled me at Law's Judo & JuJitsu School (I think in hopes of draining off my excess energy) and that became the center of my life for the next 16 years. At age 16, I was a Black Belt and was teaching San Francisco police officers how to survive on the streets. In college I initially majored in Police Science and worked for a while as a Cadet on the Concord, CA Police Department. At age 18, I took a year off school and went to Europe. I washed dishes in Sweden and was a shipping clerk in Denmark to feed myself. The year's highlight came at the beginning where on the ship going to Europe I met the young Norwegian lady, Annabet, who ten years later would become my wife. I lost her to cancer 19 years ago. The bulk of my life I worked in the insurance business – both in personal sales and management. I earned my Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation from the American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. In 1989, my family moved to Eugene, OR where I ended my career in insurance and went back to school studying electronics. I worked in computer based business and then bounced in and out of retirement several times. A year ago, Tom Leggate introduced me to Charlie Eads and I started a whole new life. My wife's name is Ann and between us, we have 15 children and countless grandkids.

Business nicHe: I've been a salesman or sales manager most of my life. A salesperson may demonstrate products, take an order and insure the product is delivered. With Charlie Eads and the fantastic folks at KGAL and KSHO Radio, I'm an Account Executive and that's so much more. We want to be partners with our clients. They are not just “advertisers” but people with plans, hopes and dreams. I strive to learn all I can about the business and the owner to I can do all I can to make their plans, hopes and dreams come true. I'm in the business of ideas.

issue fAcinG AlBAny And otHer AreAs: The biggest issue facing Albany is the polarization of our citizens. It's not just in politics. Too many people are adopting the idea that their own thoughts and opinions are the right and only thoughts and opinions anyone should have. Having said that, I'm delighted and proud to say that in our community this is a trend that has not caught on as it has in so much of our country. I try to do all I can to keep it that way with friendly relationships and respect for all.

cHAmBer involvement: My Chamber involvement has been with Greeters meetings. Save illness, I seldom miss a meeting. What a wonderful way to start the day!
