2005 - NCAA Regional No. 14OU Softball Complex (Norman, Okla.): Brooke Mitchell, pitching in what would be her fi nal appearance in a UL uniform, kept Oregon at bay while the off ense opened a 6-1 lead. In Saturday’s winner’s bracket contest Alison Horne’s two-out, pinch-hit double in the top of the sixth inning helped Oklahoma break a 3-3 tie and send the host-Sooners to a 6-3 victory. UL’s stay at the Norman Regional ended later Saturday when Oregon took a 3-1 elimination game victory behind the pitching of Alicia Cook.

2006 - NCAA Regional No. 15Tiger Park (Baton Rouge, La.): A dominant pitching performance by Ashley Kirchberg and clutch extra base hits from Danyele Gomez and Holly Tankersley sparked a 2-0 victory over N.C. State. LSU scored three unanswered runs to force extra innings and a fi elder’s choice allowed the Tigers to scratch with the winning run in the 10th inning of a 7-6 winner’s bracket fi nal. The rematch between the Cajuns and Tigers was once again decided in the Tigers’ favor as a Vanessa Soto sacrifi ce fl y in the bottom of the seventh scored Quinlan Duhon to send LSU to a 5-4 victory.

2008 - NCAA Houston Super RegionalCougar SB Complex (Houston, Texas): Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team advanced to the 2008 Women’s College World Series as they defeated No. 8 National Seed Houston on the road in the best of three Super Regional. The appearance in the Super Regional marked the fi rst time the Cajuns had advanced to the Super Regionals since the NCAA implemented the two-round system in 2006. The Cajuns came from behind in game one to take a 1-0 series lead, but a bad sixth inning in game two forced a decisive game three. In the fi nal game, the Cajuns received a two-hit shutout by freshman Ashley Brignac and home runs from seniors Holly Tankersley and Vanessa Soto to advance to their fi fth World Series in program history.

IT BEGAN WITH QUESTIONSThe Ragin’ Cajuns entered the 2004 season with several questions to be

answered. Players were moving to new positions and some fi rst-time players would be called upon to step into starting roles. Then there was the big question – what to do for an encore after making it to the Women’s College World Series the season before? Then injury problems arose before the season started. Senior Jill Robertson suff ered a season-ending knee injury in preseason practice and fellow senior Tiff any Grayson was still bothered from the eff ects of off season shoulder surgery. Everyone remembered the injury Brooke Mitchell suff ered during the 2003 NCAA Regional and wondered if she would bounce back and be a dominant force again.

ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS Louisiana posted a school-record 60 victories, championships in fi ve tournaments, ran the table in Sun Belt play (18-0), captured the Sun Belt regular season and tournament titles, hit a school-record 88 home run and eliminated No. 1 national seed Arizona from the NCAA Regional. By the way, Brooke Mitchell erased any doubts and came back even stronger. The junior ace hurler led the nation in victories with 45, struck out a school-record 524 batters and pitched the team within one game of a return trip to the Women’s College World Series.

STOPPING ARIZONA The 2004 Ragin’ Cajuns will be forever remembered as the team that ended one of college softball’s incredible streaks of Women’s College World Series appearances. Brooke Mitchell, pitching for the second consecutive game on the day, struck out six and held Arizona to six hits as the Ragin’ Cajuns posted a 5-0 victory on May 22 and eliminated the No. 1 national seed Wildcats from the Tucson Regional. As a result, Louisiana became directly responsible for the Wildcats not advancing to the WCWS for the fi rst time since 1987.

A NEW BENCHMARK With a 3-0 win over Northwestern in the NCAA Regional in Tucson, Ariz., Louisiana set a new program record for victories with the 58th triumph of the season on May 22. The next day, with a win over Oklahoma in game one of championship Sunday, the Cajuns reached 60 victories for the fi rst time in program history.

HOME RUN MACHINE Louisiana slugged a school-record 88 home runs through 68 games for an average of 1.29 home runs per game. The Cajuns home run per game total ranked fi fth in the nation and in the Top 10 all-time in the NCAA record book. It was the fi rst time in school history a team hit 80-plus home runs.

NEW STRIKEOUT QUEEN With her fi fth strikeout of the second game against Louisiana Tech on Wednesday, April 14, Brooke Mitchell carved her name into the UL record books as the program’s career strikeouts leader, surpassing former All-American Kyla Hall. Mitchell, who recorded her 821st strikeout that day, moved ahead of Hall who had held the record of 820 strikeouts for the previous 10 years.

THE NEW HOME RUN QUEEN Holly Tankersley slugged 21 home runs in 2004 – a mark which surpassed Danyele Gomez’s record of 20 set during the 2003 season. She broke the record with a home run off of Arizona’s Alicia Hollowell in the Cajuns’ 5-0 win that eliminated UA from the NCAA Regional.

WINNING IN BUNCHES The Cajuns posted three double-digit win streaks. The team had an 18-game win streak from Feb. 8 through Feb. 29. From March 24-April 21, the Cajuns won 13 straight games. UL later entered the NCAA Regional on a 14-game w i n n i n g streak which dated back to April 24.

    AGO

RETURN TO REGIONALSThe 1999 Ragin’ Cajuns made sure that Louisiana’s postseason absence wouldn’t

last more than one year. The Cajuns won 51 regular season games and earned the No. 1 seed for NCAA Regional No. 7 in Amherst, Mass. This came one season after the 1998 team fi nished 36-15 and was left at home for the fi rst time in the ‘90s.

BETTER THAN ADVERTISED She knew they would be better. She had no idea they would be this good. The 1999 Ragin’ Cajuns softball team had 61 home runs, 109 doubles, 559 hits and scored 383 runs. In seemingly every off ensive statistical category, head coach Yvette Girouard saw incredible school records – set by teams that narrowly missed out on national records – shattered. “From the beginning, I said this team would be better,” said Girouard, who saw the ’99 team become only the third UL squad to win 50 games in a season. “But no one could expect this team to accomplish what they did.” And off of it came from a club consisting of three seniors and generally started four newcomers at the most important positions.

NFCA LEADOFF CLASSIC CHAMPIONS For the fi rst time in school history the Ragin’ Cajuns won the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The unranked Cajuns managed to win the 24-team tournament despite being paired with three ranked teams in its opening four-school pool. Behind junior hurler Kim Dunlap UL defeated Top 10 powerhouses Michigan and Oklahoma. Freshman pitcher Melissa Coronado allowed only one run during the week and picked up wins over such prominent programs as Hofstra, South Carolina and DePaul.

TAKING DOWN MORE GIANTS A few weeks after winning the Leadoff Classic, the Cajuns took off for Fullerton, Calif., for the KIA Klassic. In sometimes dramatic fashion, UL beat nationally ranked Texas, Oregon State, defending national champion Fresno State and Washington (1999 national championship game participant).

ALMOST IN OKC Louisiana was one victory away from making its fourth trip to the Women’s College World Series. The Cajuns rolled through NCAA Regional No. 7 action in Amherst, Mass., as the No. 1 seed and were undefeated heading into championship Sunday. Needing two wins over the Ragin’ Cajuns, the No. 3 seed Bears did just that – winning by scores of 3-0 and 8-1 to deny Louisiana its fourth trip to the WCWS.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCKFreshman shortstop Alana Addison set a new single-season school record for

freshmen with 12 home runs in 1999.

SETTING ANOTHER STANDARDSenior Kelli Bruce, who set the school record for doubles in a season with 24 in

1998, set a school record with a 25-game hitting streak – running from March 16 through April 23.

CLARK REWRITES RECORDS, TOO Tiff any Clark set the school season records for hits (87), total bases (145) and runs (67). She also set personal bests in home runs (11), RBI (63) and doubles (21).

CORONADO MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACT Freshman pitcher Melissa Coronado was a big surprise on the pitching staff . She led the team with a 0.98 ERA, 22 wins, 18 complete games, eight shutouts, 170 2/3 innings pitched, 173 strikeouts and a .201 opponents’ batting average. She was an NFCA All-South Region selection and was named MVP at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. She struck out 20 batters and gave up only one run in 18 innings of work. Earned the win over DePaul in the championship game. Was named NFCA
