Rural Wealth Creation: Exploring Food Systems-Led Development Strategies
PIs: Dr. Michael Carolan and Dr. Becca Jablonksi
Could improving the American food system allow for workers in rural America to strengthen their economies and increase their capital? Would increases in
capital lead to lower poverty rates in these areas?
TEAM VISION – This CIP project seeks to:• Understand how food system strategies can contribute to social, cultural, human,
political, physical, natural, and financial capital in rural communities.• Promote CSU as the leader in transdisciplinary, science-based research on the role
of food systems led rural development strategies.
Objectives: Moving from Knowledge to Impact1. Depict the Denver and provisioning producer food system as a model, incorporating
rural wealth creation framework2. Solicit funding and partnership to develop a Center/Institute3. Engage stakeholders in communicating and verifying modeling efforts, as well as
how results help to frame opportunities and tradeoffs to support food systems led rural wealth creation
Rural Wealth Creation: Exploring Food Systems-Led Development Strategies
Highlights and Accomplishments• FFAR Award: $2M Tipping Points grant to connect food security and access efforts with the
agri-business, naturals resources, and economic development communities.• Denver’s Community Food Systems Data & Outreach Program Administrator: Funded by
the team. Focus on facilitating relationships with external stakeholders around emerging market opportunities in the Denver metro area due to policy changes.
• Case Studies: Identification, recruitment, and convening of 4 case studies with provisioning producer communities and stakeholders in Denver
• Food Policy/Programing Efforts: Denver Public Health & Environment, Denver Food Vision, National Western Center, Colorado Blueprint of Food and Agriculture
• Commodity Specific Retreat (Dec 2018): Convening of growers, buyers, and policymakers to discuss how market opportunities in the Denver Metro area can support specialty crop industries in the San Luis Valley and Western Slope.
• Internal Team Assembly: 27 members, representing 13 disciplines/units• External Team Assembly:

VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH
Our Consortia is Poised to Accelerate and Enhance Impact in Our National Priority for BioDefense
• Published report on Ag Biodefense in Oct 2017 which pointed to need for Ag related stockpiling to thwart $B losses
• Interagency strategy published Sep 18, 2018
• Current Farm Bill focus on AgDefense (Vaccine bank, NAHLN, EDEN)
• New 5 land grant consortia formed to provide solutions that link research to response with assets that no one of us can achieve
VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH
Themes: Agility and Resiliency• From rapid ID to response through countermeasure production and stockpiling
• Sustainable threat prioritization from known threats (some not yet seen in US), emerging and unknown
• Communication, engagement and outreach through land grant heritages
