Shout Out from Smith Elementary Times-News

Three Smith Elementary School classes were treated to an ice cream party Friday for their efforts to collect food for The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Alamance County. The drive was part of the Boy Scouts’ Scouting for Food, which took place last week. In addition to the partnership with Smith, Scouts canvassed neighborhoods for donated bags of nonperishable food. Boy Scout leaders and Burlington Mayor Ian Baltutis, himself an Eagle Scout, visited Smith on Friday to

hand out the ice cream.

Shout Out from Eastern High Lisa Henninger, Media Coordinator

We submitted a grant application to the VOYA Unsung Heroes grant and won! We purchased a sewing machine and invited students to use it to show off their creativity. Many different students have enjoyed coming into the media center to make a Valentine, signing and dating it so we have a work of art by various students!

Shout Out from Williams High Ashley Reynolds Bowers, Chemistry and Physical Science

Susan Turner, CDC at WHS, brought in Army recruiters and Army EOD specialists to talk to science and CTE classes. Students learned about what the EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) does in the field and behind the scenes. They were allowed to drive the robot, experience firsthand what it feels like to wear the suit, and they were allowed to use the metal detector. Students learned a lot about the importance of science and technology in the field.

Shout Out from Pleasant Grove Elementary Christine Bertson, First Grade

First Grade at PGE celebrated the100th day of school last week! The teachers and students all dressed up like we were 100 years old. Students had been working hard on their 100th day projects at home and presented

them to the class. We finished up by making 100 day hats and playing race to 100. 100th day was a busy day but a huge success!

Shout Out from Cummings High Tonya Cope

On Thursday, February 16th, Cummings High School celebrated 117th Day! There are 117 days until our

fantastic crew in the Class of 2017 walk across the stage at Lamb's Chapel to receive their diploma and our

Seniors were allowed to celebrate how close they are in comfort by wearing pajamas for the day.

As students entered the building, they were greeted by a huge banner letting Seniors know just how close they

are. During the morning announcements, senior class advisor, Tonya Cope, let the rest of the building know

why Seniors were wearing their pajamas, told the Seniors that the faculty and

staff were proud of how far they've come and that they're looking forward to

see where they'll go, Then we asked the underclass to give a high five or a fist

bump to a Senior to let them know that they were excited for them, too. She

also announced that Seniors wearing PJs could come by her room for a special

treat and then distributed ring pops

to Seniors that participated. A large

percentage of the class did stop by

and they seemed to enjoy their

treats. We're looking forward to

planning additional mini-

celebrations during the final months

to keep our Seniors focused on the

goal and to hopefully encourage our

underclassmen that

they will soon make it

to this point!

Elementary! It is exciting to share! I am so proud of the work of our teachers and students! Elon Elementary is proud of our progress with our global adventure! Teachers and students have experienced an enriched look at our standards! We have explored the world while working on state standards through connections to the content. We have infused technology by connecting to other schools and people around the world. We have become more diverse in our actions, thoughts and ideas. Our school also celebrates the global perspective through our staff members who come from Colombia, Honduras, Australia, England, Scotland, Jamaica, India, and Romania. We are excited to be completing the module traing for global educator endorsement on our state educator license as well. Participate (formerly known as VIF) approached us about creating this video which captures part of our story. We are still writing it and growing each day by learning something new about the world around us and something new about ourselves in the process! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgI2RGM8wSw&feature=youtu.be

Seabees Sweethearts: The Seabees at Smith Elementary had a sweetheart of a time last Friday. They had a Valentine’s Day dance. The third, fourth and fifth graders got their groove on thanks to the tunes provided by DJ Chubber May. There were snacks available for hungry and thirsty dancers. A photo booth was set up so that memories could be captured with friends. The proceeds from the dance will be used to sponsor scholarships for the 5th grade spring field trip to Sound to Sea.

Our Seabees have a lot of heart!

Super Bowl Seabees: In January our second graders accepted a football challenge to score points for each night read. For reading each night they scored 3 points. If they did a story map of what they read, they scored a touchdown (7 points). Then the Friday before the Superbowl, they had a tailgate party and enjoyed snacks. As a special treat, Dr. Harrison came in and read The Snatchabook and Three Snow Bears. As luck would have it, it started snowing while he was reading. He joked that he did not like when it snows because he doesn’t want to miss school. The second graders had a great time scoring big and reading during the month of January. Having Dr. Harrison come to share his time was a very special surprise! We are all MVPs when we read!!

Shout Out to Williams High Student Musicians Veronica Allen, Orchestra Director
