mention that we are the only Spanish regional aviation companyto form part of this exciting project. For those of you who have notheard of the Galileo Project, we are talking about Europe’s firstcivilian controlled global navigation satellite system. This importantstep taken by the European Aerospace Industry represents a giganticstep for Spain. Baptised by many as Europe’s GPS, AIR NOSTRUM willbe responsible for testing out this vanguard technology in the regionalaviation sector.Satellite radio navigation is, as I have just mentioned, a vanguardtechnology. It is based on the emission from satellites of signalsindicating the time extremely precisely. This enables any individual orcompany to determine the location of any moving or stationary objectto within one meter thanks to a small cheap individual receiver. The GalileoProject will deliver accurate real-time positioning unprecedented for apublicly available system.The efforts made by Spain with regard to the development of anaerospace industry are well known. It is, therefore, a great honour forAIR NOSTRUM to be involved in a practical way in the Galileo Projectand its technological revolution. As many of you are aware, AIR NOSTRUMhas, since its inauguration, placed great emphasis on the importanceof being in the vanguard.We have, over the past years, spared no effort with regard to maintainingour position as Spain’s leading regional aviation company. Theseefforts include the constant introduction of new flight routes andfrequencies. We work hard to improve our flight network, always takinginto careful consideration the needs of our passengers. It is, therefore,a pleasure for me to be able to announce the introduction of newservices.Our latest introductions include a new daily flight from Madrid toNantes and a direct flight service between San Sebastian andSeville –Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday– and betweenSan Sebastian and Malaga –Saturday and Sunday.

Santander, una de las ciudades más bonitas del mundo,tiene, en el Paseo de la Reina Victoria y en su continuaciónpor El Sardinero hasta el Faro de Cabo Mayor, uno de lossignos más evidentes de la afirmación anterior. Desde PuertoChico, con sus elegantes edificios a un lado y, al otro, unode sus puertos ocupado por embarcaciones de recreo, unavez rebasada la cuestecita que deja a la derecha el modernoPalacio de Festivales, sede del mundialmente famoso FestivalInternacional de Música y Danza y donde también se celebrael Concurso Internacional de Piano, se advierte desde la alturadel paseo todo el esplendor de la hermosa bahía.

Santander is considered by many to be one of the world’smost beautiful sea resorts. Amongst its superb attractions,we would mention the Queen Victoria Walk stretching fromEl Sardinero to the Cabo Mayor Lighthouse. The Puerto Chicoharbour area, once home of the city’s fishing fleet, is today amodern marina full of magnificent sailing craft and home ofthe modern “Palacio de Festivales” (Auditorium and FestivalHall), venue for the world famous International Music and DanceFestival. El caminante encontrará primero, inva-diendo las aguas, la inmensa playa deEl Puntal, extendiéndose por ellas, más omenos según sean las mareas. Los veleros,los botes de remo, los yates, las barquitasde pesca se mueven en ese mar como enun lago de plata. Más adelante, el peatónavistará las torres inglesas del Palacio dela Magdalena, que el pueblo de Santanderregaló a Alfonso XIII, y que su hijo, elinfante Don Juan, vendió, al heredarlo, alAyuntamiento. La elegante obra está sobreuna colina que, por una parte se derramahacia la playa homónima, recoleta e inter-nacional, muy del gusto de los alumnosextranjeros de los cursos de la Universidad“Menéndez Pelayo”. Del palacio se des-ciende, por otra de sus laderas, hacia laensenada del Camello, y su playa, cuyonombre se debe a una roca en la que eloleaje ha esculpido en actitud sedente unode esos animales.

Si, en lugar de continuar hacia El Sardi-nero, se penetra en el recinto palaciego,

Thismarvellous historical building was a presentfrom the city and its inhabitants to KingAlfonso XIII, although it was later to be soldto the local authorities by Don Juan, KingAlfonso’s son. This elegant building standson a hill running down to the beach of thesame name. It is extremely popular amongstthe foreign students participating in thesummer courses offered by the “MenéndezPelayo” International University housed inthis impressive building. The Camello(Camel) Beach, whose name is derivedfrom the curious rock formation carved outby the sea, is also worth a mention.

Tourist TrainVisitors who, instead of continuing on to

El Sardinero, decide to visit the grounds ofthe Palacio de la Magdalena, might like to takea ride on the Tourist Train where they will beoffered sights of interest such as the unusualcrafts of Cantabria’s famous solitary navigator,the city’s aquariums or its hippodrome.Other sights worth looking out for are thelocal Tennis Club or statute of the famouswriter and navigator, Jose Del Rio Sainz.Another beach worth visiting is the Concha

The popular, bustling El Sardineroconserves a variety of historical hotels datingback to the period in which Santander wasthe official summer royal residence of QueenIsabel II and King Alfonso XIII. Amongst itsnumerous urban features, we would mentionthe Plaza de Italia named after the Italianlegionnaires and dating back to 1938. Herevisitors will find, amongst other things, thefamous Hotel Sardinero and magnificentGran Casino dating back to 1916.

puede hacerse un periplo en un tren turís-tico y conocer las curiosas embarcacionesde un navegante solitario cántabro, losacuarios o el hipódromo. Antes de retomarel camino, sale al paso el Club de Tenisy la estatua del escritor y navegante JoséDel Río Sainz, que tanto parece lobode mar, como poeta. Después, la Playade la Concha y, unida a ella, en tiemposde marea baja, la Primera, cuyas doradasarenas no tienen parangón, como tampocolo tiene su encaje entre los jardines de suderecha, el cercano islote de Cabo Menor yel Palacio, así como Piquío, a su izquierda,con sus tamarindos, sus macizos de floresreverberantes y sus balcones sobre lasrocas.

Una mínimaplaya, con más rocas que arena, en el finaldel espigón donde se ubican varios hotelesy restaurantes, cierra el litoral de El Sar-dinero, pero ascendiendo de nuevo cabellegar hasta el Faro y pasar antes por la Calade Mataleñas, mediante acceso de esca-leras o por el Campo Municipal de Golf, sise tiene afición a ese deporte que tanto hadivulgado el santanderino Severiano Balles-teros. Tanto Mataleñas como el Faro, y todoel entorno del cabo en que éste se asienta,

Beaches for all tastesIn El Sardinero, visitors will find an even

more impressive beach than the “Primera”.We are referring to the “Segunda” (the“Second” Sardinero Beach), where mostof the summer visitors to El Sardinerocongregate. This extraordinary beach iscertainly, with a surface area of over 50,000square meters, big enough to accommodatethem. Also known as the Casteñeda Beach,the sand invitingly slopes gently down tothe sea. A small rocky beach at the end ofthe jetty marks the end of the El Sardinero.Finally, we would mention the MataleñasBeach nestled between the cliffs of the CaboMayor to the north and the Cabo Menor tothe east, a stunning beach well protectedfrom the wind and the waves. We wouldalso mention the nearby Mataleñas Park,considered one of Santander’s largest andmost beautiful municipal parks. It is home,amongst other things, of one of Spain’s firstpublic golf courses, inaugurated in 1986.For those who may not be aware, Santanderis home of one of Spain’s most famousinternational golfing champions, namely,Severiano Ballestros.

Compendio de estilos arquitectónicos tandispares y hermosos como el románico, elbarroco castellano o el árabe, los orígenesde este magnífico espacio catedraliciose remontan al siglo VII, momento en quefue fundada por Alfonso II “el Casto”. –What have you got out of playing inthe Italian Basketball League?

–I’ve learnt a lot, especially withregard to the technical aspects ofplaying. I have very little Spanish leagueexperience but, after three years, I havean important amount of experience inthe Italian league. I’ve played with allnationalities. On top of that, I’ve learntto speak Italian and English, the latteris the language normally used on thecourt.

–Did you adapt well to the Italianleague?

–Yes, very well. I was just 19-years-oldand had very little experience, I virtuallystarted from scratch. This made it mucheasier, it was like becoming a beginneragain.

–What difference is there betweenthe Spanish and Italian leagues?

–He aprendido muchísimo, especialmenteen lo referente a aspectos técnicos de juego.En la española apenas tengo experiencia,en cambio en la italiana, en la que he estadocasi tres años, poseo mucha. He compar-tido cancha con jugadores de casi todaslas nacionalidades. Además he aprendidoa hablar italiano y, sobre todo, inglés, quees lo que se habla en los campos.

–¿Te adaptaste al juego del paístransalpino?

–Sí, muy bien. Al llegar con 19 años y sindemasiada experiencia, tuve que aprenderlotodo prácticamente de cero, por lo que nome costó tanto adaptarme. Fue casi comocomenzar nuevamente como profesional.

–¿En qué se diferencia de la espa-ñola?

–Aunque son parecidas, hoy por hoytiene más nivel la nuestra. En España estánbásicamente los mejores jugadores deEuropa. Los equipos se han reforzadomucho y cualquiera podría estar arriba.

–An optimum performance. I have agreat deal of experience, although thereare some things I still need to polishup on. It is a question of just “lettinggo of the past” and concentrating onachieving good results.

–You are considered a tough player,somebody who knows how to takeadvantage of his resources. Whatresources are we talking about?

–I try and combine my height, agilityand individual technique. I’m a versatileopponent, with a good hand, a playerwho is good on the inside and outside,somebody that knows how to “fight” forpoints.

–What has been the best moment ofyour career?

–It is still to come.–And the worst?–When I left the Joventut de Badalona

–¿Qué experiencias te ha propor-cionado haber jugado en la liga ita-liana?

Para llegar donde está, Albert Miralles ha efectuado un largo aprendizaje, que ha incluido jugar en ligas tan competitivas como la italiana. Ahora pretende “vaciarse” de nuevoy empezar a ofrecer grandes resultados.

–Muchas cosas. Veía muy poco a mifamilia y a mis amigos. Tuve que dejar dehacer muchas cosas que me encantaban enel país que más me gusta, que es España.Es muy complicado, pero si en tu país nopuedes abrirte momentáneamente caminodebes hacerlo donde surja la oportunidad.Tomé una decisión muy relevante, que meha hecho madurar mucho. Prácticamenteestoy comenzando ahora mi carrera, perocon unas bases más sentadas y sólidas queantaño.

–Siguiendo el tópico, ¿no fuisteprofeta en tu tierra?

–No. Creo que actualmente es muy com-plicado serlo. Es lo más bonito pero sonmuy pocos los privilegiados que lo logran.

–¿Qué oportunidades está brindán-dote jugar en un equipo tan impor-tante como el Pamesa Valenciay hasta dónde piensas que puedellegar en el futuro?

–He firmado con este club para cuatroaños para conseguir los máximos y másambiciosos logros europeos. No tengoninguna duda de que vamos a conseguirlo.Estoy en el lugar indicado y sé que, conpaciencia, vamos a llegar muy lejos y aconquistar unos resultados tremendos.

–They are more or less the same,although I would say the Spanish leagueis slightly superior. Spain has some ofEurope’s best basketball players. Themajority of teams have improved overthe past years, in fact, any of themcould become league champion. In Italy,the league is dominated by three orfour teams only.

–What did you miss most aboutSpain?

–I missed lots of things. I hardly sawmy family and friends. I had to giveup a lot of things when I left Spain. Aplayer has to go where the opportunitiesare. I took a very important decision thathas helped me mature. And now, it is asthough, once again, I am starting all over,but this time with a much more solidbase.

–From a topical point of view, youwere unable to become “a prophet inyour own land”?

–No. I think it is very difficult for anyoneto become a prophet in his or her ownland. It would be marvellous, but only afew privileged people have managed it.

–What opportunities does a team asimportant as Pamesa Valencia have tooffer, and how far would you like to go?

–I have signed a four-year contractand hope to win some of the moreimportant European championships.

–El Pamesa Valencia se caracte-riza por su incondicional afición. ¿Enqué medida puede influir su apoyo ala hora de dar la vuelta al marcador?

–Nuestra afición es uno de nuestrosfactores clave. Todos los equipos grandestienen una gran afición detrás. Cuando estecampo ruge es muy difícil perder. Cuandodebuté en este campo, a los 17 años, eraun auténtico polvorín, salía humo por suscuatro costados, era verdaderamente unaolla a presión. Los aficionados están unpoco decepcionados con los últimos resul-tados, pero necesitamos encarecidamentesu aliento ya que las canchas del Unicaja,TAU o Barcelona dan mucho respeto. Que-remos y vamos a devolverles ilusión.

–Hablando de influir, ¿en qué me-dida lo está haciendo la figura de PauGasol?

–Su imagen está ayudando mucho albaloncesto español, y no sólo él sinotambién otros jugadores como Raúl Lópezo José Manuel Calderón. Cuando habla-mos de la liga española podemos afirmarque es, después de la NBA, la mejor delmundo.

–¿Te ves en breve como él, portaday protagonista de juegos de video-consolas?

–Actualmente no. Debo centrarme enhacerlo lo mejor posible en el Pamesa.No lo descarto como algo que podríahacerse realidad. Cuando era pequeñosoñaba con ser profesional del baloncestoy jugar en la Selección Nacional. Ambosse han cumplido.

–Entonces, ¿no descartas dentrode poco manejarte a ti mismo en unvideojuego?

–Me gustaría, así encestaría un montónde puntos jugando conmigo mismo.

–Our supporters are one of our mainkeys to success. All big teams havesupporters. Losing on home ground isvirtually impossible with the type ofsupporters we have. When I was heresome six years ago, the atmosphere wasexplosive. Our supporters are a littledisappointed with the team’s recentresults. We need, more than ever, theirsupport because the Unicaja, TAU andBarcelona teams are tough opponents.Our aim is to fulfil our supporters’expectations.

–What influence has the figure of PauGasol had on Spanish basketball?

–His image is a great help to Spanishbasketball, and the images of otherplayers such as Raúl López and JoséManuel Calderón. The Spanish BasketballLeague is, with the exception of the NBA,the best league in the world.

–Can you imagine yourself in thenear future advertising videogameslike Pau Gasol?

–No, not at present. My main objectiveis to do my best on the court, althoughwho knows what the future has instore. When I was a child I dreamt ofbecoming a professional basketballplayer and of playing with the SpanishNational Basketball Team, both dreamshave come true.

–So you can imagine yourself playingwith yourself in a videogame?

–Yes, I can. Just imagine I would beable to help myself make a load of points.

al cine, comer fuera de casa, leer, navegarpor internet y todo ese tipo de cosas rela-jadas. El verano lo disfruto a tope, voy a laplaya, viajo...

–¿Qué película y qué libro reco-mendarías a nuestros lectores?

–Me encantó “Braveheart”, de Mel Gibson,aunque mi favorita, a mi que me gusta lamontaña, es “Bailando con lobos”, de KevinCostner. En cuanto al libro destacaría “Elalquimista” de Paulo Coelho. Me lo he leídodos veces y siempre me ha motivado.

–¿Alguna anécdota?–Cuando empecé en Italia, por mi intensa

manera de jugar, empezaron a llamarme“el torito”, en referencia a mi nacionalidadespañola. Al final se me quedó el apodo.Un día en una entrevista me preguntaron sime gustaba y les contesté que no porque,aunque resultaba gracioso, ya puestos,prefería más “el toro”, que da más respeto.

–Vuelas frecuentemente con IberiaRegional AIR NOSTRUM. ¿Qué aspec-tos destacarías de la compañía?

–Es una excelente empresa aérea, a laaltura de las mejores de Europa. Subraya-ría su catering y el agradable trato de supersonal con los pasajeros.

–Does your height (2.07 m.), souseful on the court, cause problems ineveryday life?

–Yes. This world is not made for verytall people. Most of us have had toadapt to our height from a young age.I use a size 52 shoe size, impossibleto find. A lot of my clothes have to bemade to measure.

–What do you do in your free time?–I rest as much as I can. I like going

to the movies, eating out, reading, surfingthe Internet and other types of relaxingactivities. I really enjoy the summer,going to the beach, travelling etc.

–What film and/or book would yourecommend?

–I really enjoyed the film “Braveheart”with Mel Gibson, although my favouritefilm is “Dancing with Wolves” withKevin Costner. As far as my favouritebook is concerned, I would recommend“The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, I’veread it twice and find it very motivating.

–Do you have any funny anecdotes?–Well, when I first began playing in

Italy my style of play earned me thenickname “El Torito” (the little bull)in reference to my nationality. One dayduring an interview I was asked if Iliked my nickname. I replied that I didn’tand, although “El Torito” is quite cute,if I am to be called anything I wouldprefer to be called “Toro” (bull), a muchmore imposing figure.

–As a frequent flyer with IberiaRegional AIR NOSTRUM, what do youlike most about our airline?

–It is a great airline, as good as anyof the best European airlines. I wouldemphasize the catering and friendlypassenger service.

Lo primero que llama la atención es susublime belleza, debida a que el SantoCáliz, que mide 17 centímetros de altura,fue adornado con rubíes, perlas y demáspiedras y materiales preciosos entre lossiglos XIII y XIV. Home of a wide variety ofhistorical and other types of impressivemonuments such as the Lonja, theCathedral of Valencia, Miguelete, theQuart and Serrano towers, the Basilica ofthe Virgen de los Desamparados, patronsaint of Valencia, and the modern Ciudadde las Artes y las Ciencias (Arts & ScienceCentre) amongst others, it is a lesserknown fact that the previously mentionedCathedral of Valencia might well house theHoly Grail, the sacred chalice used byChrist during the Last Supper.

The beauty of the sacred chalice housedin the Cathedral of Valencia is probably itsmost outstanding feature. Adorned withrubies, pearls and other precious stonesduring the 13th and 14th centuries, this17 cm high vessel carved out of a singlepiece of agate is made up of a 9 cmdiameter cup dating back to the 1stcentury, of oriental origin, a hexagonalcolumn, two lateral snake shaped handlesand a highly elaborated base comprisingan elliptical cup of chalcedony.

An amazing historyBut how did the Holy Grail find its way

to Valencia? Following the persecution ofthe Christians by the Roman emperor,Valeriano, the chalice, used by Jesus Christ,

journey to Montserrat searching for the“Magic Mountain” and the Holy Grail. Theaim of Himmler, renowned for his interestin the Occult, was to appropriate this famousrelic in order to use its “hidden powers” aspart of his plan to conquer the world.

The second of these interesting historicalanecdotes took place when Pope JohnPaul II used the chalice during the masshe celebrated whilst on a visit to Valenciain November, 1982, declaring that thechalice represented, “a reminder of the lifeof Christ on earth”.

Reality or fiction, visitors to the swingingMediterranean metropolis of Valenciashould not miss a golden opportunity tovisit the city’s Cathedral and one of itsmost prized possessions.

St. Peter and suceeding Popes up to PopeSixtus II, was sent during the 3rd centuryby St. Lawrence, first Deacon of the RomanChurch, to Huesca where it was housed inthe Monastery of St. Juan de la Peña. Thisprecious relic was saved from the flamesthanks to King Martin, “El Humano”, whobrought it to the chapel of the Royal Palaceat the Alfajeria in Zaragoza. In 1437, AlfonsoV of Aragón, “El Magnánimo”, donated ittogether with the relics of the House ofAragón, to the Cathedral of Valencia. It was,at one point, hidden by Bishop Audubertoin the cave of the hermit, Juan de Atarés,and later in the Pyrenean Valley of Echo toprotect it from the Moorish troops whoattacked the Iberian Peninsula during theMiddle Ages. It was also protected fromNapoleon’s troops at the beginning ofthe 19th century as a result of the War ofIndependence and during the SpanishCivil War (1936-1939). The Holy Chalice,housed in the Chapel of the Holy Chalicein the Cathedral of Valencia, has beenrevered by the devout since 1916.

The legendary Holy GrailWe would like to mention two historical

anecdotes that underline the importanceof this particular Holy Grail. In 1940,the Commander of the SS, and one of themost important members of the III Reich,Heinrich Himmler, made a mysterious

qué punto el Santo Cáliz es una pieza capi-tal en el devenir de la Humanidad. En 1940el siniestro jefe de las SS y uno de losmáximos jerarcas del III Reich, HeinrichHimmler, efectuó un misterioso viaje relám-pago a Montserrat con el objetivo de encon-

trar la mítica “Montaña Mágica” y el SantoGrial, pues el mandatario nazi, conocidopor su afición al esoterismo y a las cienciasocultas, pretendía lograr con la reliquiapoderes inimaginables en su excéntricoafán de conquistar el mundo.

Más amable resultó la utilización delSanto Cáliz por el Papa Juan Pablo IIdurante la misa que presidió en Valenciaen noviembre de 1982, declarándolo “ves-tigio del paso de Cristo por la tierra”.

Cuestión de Fe o pura leyenda, lo quees seguro es que la visión del Santo Cálizevoca de todo menos indiferencia, consti-tuyendo además otra de las interesantesrazones para disfrutar de una modernay dinámica metrópoli que abraza al futurorespetando siempre su glorioso pasado.

The magnificent Bardenas Reales could quite easily be confused with oneof the lunar landscapes described by Jules Verne, or with one of the desertlandscapes used in the film industry’s famous “Spagetti” westerns. It has,however, nothing to do with either of these; it is, in fact, a UNESCO WorldBiosphere Reserve with a surface area of 41,845 hectares situated in thesoutheast of the Spanish autonomous region of Navarra.
