Additional Lanes Being Added on Coalburg Road, in Jefferson County Grade, base, pave and partial signals
BIRMINGHAM – Work will begin next week to add additional lanes on Coalburg Road from
State Route 107 to Corridor X (I-22) in Jefferson County. This work will include grade, base,
pave and partial signals.
Weather permitting; Tuesday, July 9 at 9 a.m. the contractor will place signs to detour traffic for
construction on Coalburg Road. Traffic along Coalburg Road from Daniel Payne Drive to south
of Republic Street will be rerouted along Republic Street. This detour is expected to last
approximately 12 to 16 weeks. Other construction along Coalburg Road from Republic Street to
the overpass of I-22 will occur simultaneously and will be announced.
This $7,555,000 project was awarded to W.S. Newell of Montgomery and is expected to be
completed by Winter 2015.
A reduced speed limit of 45 mph is in effect throughout the work zone. Motorists are requested
to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits
and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for

Planned Lane Closures on I-459 SB and NB to Perform Asphalt Paving, in Jefferson County
BIRMINGHAM – Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation announces
lane closures on Interstate I-459 southbound and northbound to perform asphalt paving
operations in Jefferson County for the following:
Monday, July 8 at 7 p.m. until Tuesday, July 9 at 6 a.m., at various times the southbound outside lane
of I-459 from Grants Mill Road Interchange (milepost 27.0) to south of the US 280 Interchange
(milepost 20.0) will be closed to perform paving operations at this location. The same procedure will
be followed the following night. Beginning Wednesday, July 10, at 7 p.m. until Thursday, July 11 at
6 a.m. the northbound inside lane from south of the US 280 Interchange (milepost 20.0) to the Grants
Mill Road Interchange (27.0) will be closed to perform paving operations at this location. The same
procedure will be followed the following three nights.

Planned Lane Closures on SR 119 from Montevallo to Alabaster, in Shelby County
BIRMINGHAM – Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation announces
at various times the northbound and southbound inside and outside lanes of State Route 119 from
Montevallo to Alabaster in Shelby County will be closed to perform paving operations;
Sunday, July 7, at 7 p.m. until Monday, July 8 at 6 a.m., at various times the northbound
and southbound inside and outside lanes of State Route 119 from the North City Limits
of Montevallo (milepost 2.0) to the Intersection of County Road 26 in Alabaster
(milepost 9.3) will be closed to perform paving operations at this location. The same
procedure will be followed the following four nights.

of US 280 to the Shelby/Jefferson County Line in Shelby County will be closed to perform

BIRMINGHAM – Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation announces
at various times the northbound and southbound inside and outside lanes of State Route 119 from
US-31 in Pelham to US 280 in Shelby County will be closed to perform the following asphalt
paving operations;
Monday, July 8 at 7 p.m. until Tuesday, July 9 at 6 a.m., at various times the northbound
and southbound inside and outside lanes of State Road 119 from 0.5 mile north of the I-
65 Interchange (milepost 19.5) to US 280 (milepost 28.0) will be closed to perform traffic
striping operations at this location. The same procedure will be followed the following
four nights.

BIRMINGHAM – Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation announces
at various times the northbound and southbound inside and outside lanes of US-31 in Vestavia to
Homewood, in Jefferson County will be closed to perform the following asphalt paving
operations;
Monday, July 8 at 7 p.m. until Tuesday, July 9 at 6 a.m., at various times the northbound
and southbound inside and outside lanes of US 31 from Shades Crest Road (milepost
269.5) in Vestavia to Hollywood Boulevard in Homewood (milepost 271.7) will be
closed to perform guardrail installation at this location. The same procedure will be
followed the following three nights.

PROGRESS 20 Announces Planned Lane Closures on I-20 WB To Perform Paving Operation as Phase III of Pavement Reconstruction Projects Continues, in Jefferson County
JEFFERSON COUNTY – A project to improve Interstate 20 from I-59 in Birmingham to
State Route 4 (US 78) in Leeds continues as the Alabama Department of Transportation announces
lane closures on I-20 West to perform Pavement Reconstruction in Jefferson County.
Beginning Monday July 8 at 12:01 a.m., weather permitting Phase III of the project will close
the
westbound lanes of I-20 from exit 136 (I-20/I-459 Interchange) to exit 130 (I-20/I-59 Inter and is
expected to last approximately 90 days. To avoid lengthy travel delays, motorists are encouraged to
use the signed local detours: Motorist wishing to take I-20 West should take I-459 North to Exit 33-A
to I-59 South.
A $30,000 per day incentive/disincentive is included in the contract with the bonus to the contractor
calculated upon completion.
About 74,000 vehicles travel each day past the Birmingham airport and continue on I-20 to the U.S. 78
Exit that carries you to the Leeds Retail Outlet. The concrete and asphalt have worn out due to the
heavy volume of traffic and heavy loads by large trucks and is being replaced.
The Alabama Department of Transportation’s $38.6 million project will rebuild approximately 9.8
miles of the interstate in both directions.
The expected completion date for the entire project is early Winter 2013.

Planned Lane Closures for Geotechnical Investigation on SR-3 (US-31) From Columbiana Road to Shades Crest Road (CR-99), in Vestavia
VESTAVIA – Weather permitting, Monday July 8, beginning at 9 a.m., the Alabama Department
of Transportation will perform Geotechnical Investigations on State Route 3 (US-31). The lane
closures will be as follows:
SR-3 (US-31) from Columbiana Road to Shades Crest Road (CR-99) in Vestavia
(milepost 266.257 to milepost 269.580)
Work will begin in the northbound outside (right) lane followed by the southbound outside
(right) lane.
Work will then proceed to the northbound inside (left) lane followed by the southbound
inside (left) lane.
Lane closures will be required in the direction of work, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., while the work is
in progress.
The Geotechnical operation should be completed within the period described above, dependent on
weather conditions and work progress.

Planned Geotechnical Investigations for Replacement of CBD (Central Business District) Bridges on I-59/I-20 between the I-65 Route Interchange and the 31st Street Interchange, in Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM – Weather permitting, on Monday, July 8, at 9 a.m., the Alabama Department
of Transportation will continue to perform geotechnical investigations for replacement of the I-
59/I-20 CBD (Central Business District) bridges in the Birmingham/Jefferson Civic Center area,
as follows:
The work will consist of soil borings at various locations, for the proposed CBD (Central
Business District) bridge replacement on I-59/I-20; including I-59/I-20 Interchange
modifications, as follows:
A short duration temporary closure of the I-59 southbound inside (left) shoulder near the
I-65 northbound ramp.
This shoulder closure is needed to provide adequate space for off-loading drilling
equipment.
This actual soil borings will be performed outside of the roadway, behind the guardrail.
All travel lanes and shoulders that may require closures, will be reopened to traffic by
3:30 p.m. each day

PELHAM/ALABASTER – Weather permitting, Tuesday July 9, beginning at 9 a.m., the
Alabama Department of Transportation will perform Geotechnical Investigations on I-65. The
lane closures will be as follows:
I-65 from the US-31 Interchange (exit 238) in Alabaster to south of the CR-52
Interchange (exit 242), in Pelham (milepost 237.400 to milepost 241.800).
Work will begin in the southbound inside (left) lane followed by the northbound inside
(left) lane.
Work will then proceed to the southbound outside (right) shoulder followed by the
northbound outside (right) shoulder.
Lane closures will be required in the direction of work, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., while the
work is in progress.
The Geotechnical operation should be completed within the period described above, dependent

Planned Lane Closures for Bridge Repairs on the SR 75 NB Bridge Over Turkey Creek (MP 8.34), in Pinson
PINSON – Weather permitting, beginning on Monday, July 15 at 9:30 a.m., through 12:00
(noon) Friday, July 19, the Alabama Department of Transportation will continue repairs on the
State Route 75 northbound bridge over Turkey Creek at milepost 8.34, in Pinson. The work will
proceed as follows:
The bridge repairs will begin on the State Route 75 northbound outside (right) lane and
shoulder of the bridge.
Due to the nature of the repairs, continuous (overnight lane closures) will be required.
Following completion of the repairs on the northbound outside (right) lane and shoulder
of the bridge, repairs will continue the following week on the northbound inside (left)
lane and shoulder of the bridge.
This work is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.

Sunday, July 14 at 7 p.m. until Monday, July 15 at 6 a.m., at various times the northbound
inside lane of I-459 from Grants Mill Road Interchange (milepost 27.0) to south of the US
280 Interchange (milepost 20.0) will be closed to perform paving operations at this location.
Also, Sunday, July 14 at 10 p.m. until Monday, July 15
at 6 a.m. the inside and middle lane will be closed at this same location. The same procedure
will be followed the following the six nights.

Planned Lane Closures on I-59 NB in the Vicinity of the Elton B. Stephens Expressway Interchange (Exit 126-A), in Birmingham For Emergency Concrete Bridge Deck Repairs, beginning tonight and continuing through the weekend
BIRMINGHAM – Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation announces lane
closures, beginning on Friday night, July 12 at 9 p.m. until Monday, July 15 at approximately 5 a.m. at
the following location:
Interstate 59 northbound inside two (left) travel lanes and shoulder, and also the northbound
inside (left) entrance ramp from 23rd
Street north will be closed throughout the weekend, for
emergency concrete bridge deck repairs.
The I-59 northbound outside (right) lane and shoulder will remain open, but will be transitioned
down to one lane and shifted slightly onto the shoulder thru the work area with traffic
channelizing devices.
Please adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and

Traffic Signals to be Removed at the Intersection of U.S. Highway 280 in, Jefferson County
JEFFERSON COUNTY – Weather permitting, the traffic signals at the intersection of U.S.
Highway 280 and Brook Manor Drive (Wendy’s and Hampton Inn) in Jefferson County will be
removed, starting Tuesday, July 16 at approximately 7:30 p.m. The median work at this location
should be completed by Friday, July 19 at 6 a.m.

Planned Moving Operation for Installation of Traffic Striping On the I-459 Ramps at the I-20 Interchange (Exit 29), in Irondale, Tuesday night
IRONDALE – Weather permitting, on Tuesday, July 16, beginning at 8 p.m., the Alabama
Department of Transportation will place new traffic striping on I-459 as follows:
I-459 ramps at the I-20 Interchange (exit 29)
This will be a moving operation on portions of all of the interchange ramps. As the
traffic striping is completed on each ramp, the operation will move to the other ramps
within the interchange.
This work is planned to be completed in one night, dependent on weather conditions and work
progress. In the event of inclement weather, the work will be rescheduled for the following
night. All travel lanes will be reopened to traffic by 5 a.m. the following morning.

Planned Lane Closures on US-31 in the Vicinity of Rosedale Drive in Homewood for Pavement Repairs, Friday
HOMEWOOD – Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation announces lane
closures, beginning on Friday, July 19 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the following locations:
US-31 southbound outside (right) lane at the intersection of Rosedale Drive. After
repairs are completed in the southbound outside (right) lane, the work will move to the
southbound inside (left) lane.
US-31 northbound outside (right) lane at the intersection of Rosedale Drive. After
repairs are completed in the northbound outside (right) lane, the work will move to the
northbound inside (left) lane.
Entrance ramp from Rosedale Drive to US-31 southbound. The ramp will remain open to
traffic, but will be narrowed to provide adequate space for equipment and personnel to
perform the work.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY Planned Lane Closure for Bridge Repair on I-65 SB, in Shelby County
Calera – Weather permitting, On Tuesday, July 23, beginning at approximately 8 a.m. and
ending before 10 a.m., ALDOT will be repairing a bridge rail on I-65 southbound at the
Buxahatchee Bridge at milepost 227.6 in the Calera area. This is just south of the State Route-25
Interchange at milepost 228.
This work will require closure of the inside (left) lane and shoulder, approaching and across the
Buxahatchee Bridge during the repair operation.
Motorists can expect delays during these operations. Motorists are also requested to consider
using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other

BIRMINGHAM – Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation announces
lane closures on Interstate I-459 southbound and northbound to perform asphalt paving
operations in Jefferson County for the following:
Sunday, July 21 at 7 p.m. until Monday, July 22 at 6 a.m., at various times the northbound inside lane
of I-459 from south of the US 280 Interchange (milepost 20.0) to the Grants Mill Road Interchange
(milepost 27.0) will be closed to perform paving operations at this location. Also, Sunday, July 21 at
10 p.m. until Monday, July 22 at 6 a.m. the inside and middle inside lane will be closed at this same
location. The same procedure will be followed the following the six nights.
Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe

lane closure on the Interstate I-459 southbound ramp to I-59 southbound near Bessemer to install a
concrete safety barrier in Jefferson County for the following:

New Guardrails to be Installed along the Median of US 280
JEFFERSON/SHELBY COUNTIES – Work continues on U.S. Highway 280 as part of the
Alabama Department of Transportation’s project to improve approximately 27 intersections
along 8.93 miles of the highway in Jefferson and Shelby counties. This project includes adding
turn lanes and changes in traffic signals to reduce congestion and improve efficiency along one
of Alabama’s most travelled roadways.
Weather permitting, work is scheduled to begin on Thursday, July 25 to install a new guardrail
system along the median from Cherokee Road to Overton Road. The work will begin in the
median of US Highway US 280 eastbound lanes and then proceed to the westbound lane. This
work is expected to take approximately 14 days to complete.
The contract requires all work requiring lane closures to be done between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. each
day. ALDOT officials expect all night-time lane closures to end in time for increased traffic
volumes associated with weekday morning commutes.
An incentive/disincentive is included in the contract with the bonus to the contractor calculated
upon completion of the project. Incentives and disincentives are included in certain contracts as a
way to accelerate project completion and minimize traffic impacts.
The entire project is expected to be completed by late November.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY Planned Geotechnical Investigations for Replacement of CBD (Central Business District) Bridges on I-59/I-20 between the I-65 Route Interchange and the 31
st Street Interchange,
in Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM – Weather permitting, beginning on July 29, at approximately 9 a.m., the Alabama
Department of Transportation will continue to perform Geotechnical Investigations for replacement of the
I-59/I-20 CBD (Central Business District) bridges in the Birmingham/Jefferson Civic Center area through
the month of August. The work will consist of soil borings at various locations, for the proposed CBD
(Central Business District) bridge replacement on I-59/I-20; including I-59/I-20 Interchange modifications,
as follows:
A short duration temporary closure of the I-65 northbound inside (right) shoulder near the I-59/
I-20westbound ramp.
A short duration temporary closure of the I-59/I-20 left shoulder near I-65.
A short duration temporary closure of the I-59/I-20 westbound ramp right shoulder from I-65.
A short duration temporary closure of the I-59/I-20 westbound ramp left shoulder from I-65.
A short duration temporary closure of the I-59/I-20 eastbound ramp left shoulder from I-65.
A short duration temporary closure of the I-65 southbound ramp left shoulder from I-59/I20.
These shoulder closures are needed to provide adequate space for off-loading drilling equipment.
These actual soil borings will be performed outside of the roadway, behind the guardrail.
All travel lanes and shoulders that may require closures, will be reopened to traffic by 3:30 p.m.
each day.
This phase of work is anticipated to take up to approximately 2-3 weeks to complete.

Planned Lane Shift on US Highway 280, in Jefferson County
JEFFERSON/SHELBY COUNTIES – Work continues on U.S. Highway 280 as part of the Alabama
Department of Transportation’s project to improve approximately 27 intersections along 8.93 miles of
the highway in Jefferson and Shelby counties. This $15.8 million project includes adding turn lanes and
changes in traffic signals to reduce congestion and improve efficiency along one of Alabama’s most
travelled roadways.
Weather permitting, Friday, August 2 at 7 p.m., a section of US Highway 280 is scheduled to be shifted to
its planned configuration from Hollywood Boulevard to Green Valley Road (Whole Foods). Changes
include removal of eastbound traffic signal at Cherokee Road, activation of traffic signal at Overton Road,
indirect left turns with protective u-turn abilities, acceleration lane added to median for side street left
turn, new turn lanes and elimination of some side streets.
There are several scopes of work currently being performed in order for the shift to take place as
scheduled to include installing a guardrail in the median, asphalt paving and striping. Traffic signals will
be adjusted to the final scheme.
An incentive/disincentive is included in the contract with the bonus to the contractor calculated upon
completion of the project. Incentives and disincentives are included in certain contracts as a way to
accelerate project completion and minimize traffic impacts.
