As we approach the final months of the 2014, we bring you this special edition of Al Shindagah to give you the highlights of Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor’s recent tour of the US which took him to New York, Illinois and Georgia. It was a jam-packed schedule full of official events.

The visit included a keynote address at the C3 Summit at the Union League Club in New York City, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the US-Arab Summit, the launch of Pathways to Peace - an initiative aimed at lasting peace between Israel and Palestine, a proposal to combat extreme poverty in the world, and the opening of the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Archives at Illinois College, where rare artifacts dating back over 500 years have been preserved for future generations to come. The US visit culminated in a tour of The Carter Center in Georgia.

'Pathways to Peace' - a realistic approach to tackle the stalled Middle East peace process - was launched at Illinois College alongside former President Jimmy Carter and former Republican Congressman Paul Findley - two great men who have long supported the need for an Israeli-Palestinian conflict resolution. President Carter received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his untiring efforts over decades to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts and to advance democracy and human rights, and the Honorable Paul Findley, an outspoken critic of US foreign policy regarding Israel, is a strong proponent of the Palestinian cause.

In his speech at the C3 Summit, Righting Wrongs: Democracy and Human Rights, Al Habtoor told the record number of delegates his distinctive view of an appropriate political partnership model for Eastern and Western nations that respect Arab traditions, and celebrate the successes of governance instead of seeking to apply Western models as one-size fits all solutions.

ismillah Al Rahman Al Raheem, Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatuh (In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace Be Upon You)

Ladies and Gentlemen, Good morning. I am happy to be at the C3 Summit today and to be recognised to receive the first Lifetime Achievement Award. The C3 Summit and its focus aspects are commendable and I wish you all the success this year and in the coming years.

I pride myself on being an ambassador of my country to the World. I have always been conscious about the importance of bridging the East and the West, finding the similarities instead of the differences between different cultures.

I founded the Al Habtoor Group in 1970 and am proud to see it grow in what it is today, and for it to be recognised on international levels.

As I wrote in my autobiography; Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor – The Autobiography, I was not born into a rich family, I did not hold sand in my hand and turn it into gold. I have had many successes for which I am grateful, but those came after many failures.

I look back now at my life and my adventures and laugh. You will laugh with me as well if you read my autobiography. I am grateful for God’s blessings and for being born in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The UAE was blessed with visionary leaders; the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum – the founders of my country.

At the Al Habtoor Group, my company’s motto is ‘Growing with the UAE’ and we have always worked vigorously to grow in parallel with my country. My country’s stellar growth is my responsibility and my privilege. No one should stand back and wait for things to be handed over to them.

In the words of John F. Kennedy’s “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country". I am a firm believer in that. In the United Arab Emirates, we are partners in our country’s success and we do our best to protect the safety of our nation and its growth. Thank God, the UAE was the first country to recover from the economic crisis in 2008, and it is still growing stronger and stronger by the day.

However, despite this phenomenal growth story, the United Arab Emirates, in particular Dubai, has been the target of the Western media for a long time; being criticised for its firm laws and low tolerance of corruption, and our handling of people who threaten our safety and national security. But the criticism is not justified. Who can blame us? Yes, we are firm with criminals and we are proud of it! Some might object or frown upon our laws, but people from all over

the world have decided to make the UAE their home because of what this nation has to offer.

This brings me to two topics that appear to be preferred by the Western media and the faultfinders when discussing the UAE: Democracy and human rights.

Human rights is one topic in particular that seems to be a favourite among my country’s strongest opponents. What is the definition of human rights? The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 referred to human rights as the basic civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights that all human beings should enjoy. Human rights issues include adequate housing, democracy, rights for children, education, economic rights, food, health, freedom of religion and belief, etc.

If we compare what the Western nations provide for their citizens and what the UAE offers, the difference is huge. All UAE citizens have homes. Young couples who cannot afford to buy homes, receive financial support. And I am not talking about community housing, this is a decent home where a couple can raise a family. Young people who want to get married are provided with money to have a ceremony and start their married life debt-free.

Education is available in the UAE at the highest standards. We have some of the top schools and universities in the world and they are available for all. We provide people with free medical care inside and outside the UAE.

My country is stable, our economy is strong and striving. We have the best infrastructure in the world; world-class banks, hospitals, two major airlines (Emirates and Etihad), and everyone wants to come to work, live and even retire in the UAE.

We have virtually no unemployment. While the streets of the richest cities in the world are full of homeless people living under bridges, tunnels and train stations. Safety and security are the number one priority for us. And we do not compromise on them.

We have used an iron fist with anyone who jeopardises our security, but this is our right and our duty - and we will not apologise for it!

Some might say that this is against human rights and democracy. I say: a parent or a head of family needs to know that their loved ones are safe, and that they will have jobs to provide for them. I need to know my employees will have jobs tomorrow to care for their families. My country’s stability, safety and security allows them that.

There is nothing wrong with democracy as a theory, where everybody gets equal opportunity, enjoys the same rights, has a safe and comfortable lifestyle and has a voice. Do you really think we, in the UAE, are missing on democracy? Think again!

Leaders in the democratic countries are locked away in their ivory towers with thousands of guards keeping them from the people they are supposed to listen to. In my country, I can meet the rulers any time I have a need, and they will listen. I can call them and they will pick-up the phone. The leaders in the UAE are reachable and approachable, and they are interested in what their people have to say. Our rulers care about their people and the residents of the country. The leaders of the UAE care about all humanity, and not just in words, but also in actions.

What have the democratic leaders of the world achieved for the Syrian men, women and children being butchered daily except talk and make empty promises? What have they done for the Palestinians who are constantly denied their basic rights such as food, safety and education? Never mind the Arab world, what is the West doing for its

veterans who end up homeless on the streets?

I wish the human rights organisations and the Western media would stop trying to fit us into Western moulds. We do not want to be influenced by foreign concepts of democracy and human rights. We know what works for us! Everyone is invited to come and see with their own eyes how we are living in my country and the blessings that we have.

In the United Arab Emirates, we do not differentiate between human beings whatever their nationality, colour, religion, sex, or any other status. We believe that all human beings are equally entitled to a decent life without discrimination. These beliefs have been inherited from our fathers and forefathers.

I am currently working on a proposal that I hope one day will materialise because its benefits will have a worldwide effect. For now, it is known as the ‘Poverty Alleviation Proposal’. The name is debateable, but for now, my concentration is on the concept.

What I am proposing is a global system of revenue-raising or a global poverty tax. The idea is not novel; but the attempts before have not succeeded. My proposal is more ambitious. It requires governments to pledge an agreed percentage annually to a new independent body tasked solely with poverty-reduction.

All the world’s greatest faiths teach us to take care of the poor. Giving to the less fortunate is required by Islam and Judaism.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to address another subject in my speech of equal importance. Palestine has always been at the forefront of my thinking. We may be diverted from the Palestinian issue with other current matters only temporarily, but Palestine and the peace process are always in my mind and my heart.

I am a realistic man and I set my goals with a real view. I will not dream and stick to the romantic idea that the Palestinians will return to Palestine because there are different facts that have made this impossible and we have to live with them.

I have shared my passion and concern for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict resolution with two great men that I admire: former US President Jimmy Carter and former US Congressman the Honorable Paul Findley. I am proud to call Paul Findley my friend. Because of him, I have come to learn more about the great Abraham Lincoln and his history.

Through my foundation, the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation, I have supported The Carter Center for several years now and will continue to do so in their efforts towards the Palestinian-Israeli conflict resolution. President Carter and his team have worked tirelessly to find solutions, and many like him and Paul are loyal to the cause and will not hesitate to do what it takes.

But I was thinking about it and decided to try a different approach. The idea came to my mind, and after careful consideration I discussed it with my team and we proposed it to Illinois College. With the assistance of my great friend Paul Findley and the faculty, we have drafted a proposal that we call ‘Pathways to Peace’. I will have the honour to launch it personally with President Jimmy Carter next week at Illinois College.

Everyone hopes this issue is resolved sooner than later, but most probably, it will fall on the shoulders of our children. Their minds and way of thinking are different from ours. So, they should be asked to find scenarios and solutions to the conflict. They understand what their generation thinks and how they need to address this issue.

‘Pathways to Peace’ is a seminar focused on historical examples of different religious, ethnic and cultural conflicts and steps taken to resolve these problems. These examples of methods used to resolves those conflicts can be applied as potential ‘Pathways to Peace’.

The faculty and students involved will travel to Jordan and, if the security situation allows, to Palestine and Israel. They will meet with Palestinian and Israeli students and try to understand them and their needs first-hand. My hope is that they can achieve a realistic solution that could help the peace process move forward.

I realise that the project might not be successful the first time, but we will try again and again. This is too important an issue for us not to try every possible way to see it happen.

I would like to end my speech this morning by saying;The world is very small, and we all have to share it. This is why we need to

find the best way to co-exist, to work together to make it a better place for everyone. From the C3 Summit in New York, I will use this platform to ask the US and the first world countries to look at us at eye-level.

We are grateful for everything you have done for us, and we have learned a lot from you. We have benefitted from your technology and your knowledge, but sometimes we have succeeded where you have failed!

It is time you started looking at us as equals and listen to our advice and recognise our achievements. It is time the West realises we don’t need to be picked-on for not following Western style policies that quite frankly don’t seem to be working for the West that well either.

You have always had our respect and our acceptance, but it is time you accepted us, respected our choices, and looked at us on the same level. We want to help, and we can help - and given the chance this world will be a much better place for every one of us.

halaf Al Habtoor has long been referred to as the ‘unofficial ambassador’ of the United

Arab Emirates. It’s easy to see why. Al Habtoor recently delivered a strongly-worded keynote speech at the C3 US -Arab Summit in New York where he talked about Democracy and Human Rights.

“I have always been conscious about the importance of bridging the East and the West, finding the similarities instead of the differences between different cultures,” he told the record number of attendees.

Al Habtoor enthralled delegates with his distinctive view of an appropriate political partnership model for Eastern and Western nations that respects Arab traditions and celebrates the successes of governance instead of seeking to apply Western models as one-size fits all solutions.

Drawing a contrast between Western models and the governing system that has led to astronomical growth in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Al Habtoor remarked, “Leaders in the democratic countries are locked away in their ivory towers, with thousands of guards keeping them from the people they are supposed to listen to. Expanding on his view of how universal human rights can be better achieved, Al Habtoor went on to say, “The leaders in the UAE are reachable and approachable, and they are interested in what their people have to say. Our rulers

Al Habtoor outlined the strengths of the UAE and praised his country’s visionary leaders - the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was

made in recognition of Al Habtoor’s long-term contribution to Middle East peace and prosperity and support to building an understanding between East and West. The award was jointly presented by Dr John Duke Anthony, President and CEO, National Council on US-Arab Relations and C3 Summit guest speaker and former US Congressman Paul Findley.

Ransel Potter, Founder of C3 International, praised Al Habtoor’s insights saying, “In his business success and unrivaled dedication to giving back, Mr Al Habtoor exemplifies the best of what C3 imagines business leaders to be and thus it was fitting that he became the first recipient of our Lifetime Achievement Award. His address perfectly framed the discussions for the day drawing out the important themes of cross cultural collaboration and how we can all work towards greater human rights for all.”

Dubai winning the bid to host the World Expo in 2020 is a major win?

Some areas were affected but not a lot of areas, especially in Dubai. Our successful bid for the World Expo 2020 was a major win especially as we were competing against giants like Russia, Turkey and Brazil. But Dubai’s growth is not dependent on the Expo, I consider it an addition, or a bonus for the city.

Your motto for you company, the Al Habtoor Group, is ‘Growing with the UAE’. Tell me about this?

We are thinking in parallel with my country, and we are growing in parallel with it. We are working for the success of

n your keynote speech you said you wished the West would “Stop trying to fit us to Western

moulds”. What doesn’t fit? A lot of things. For example, people from the Western world come to the UAE and smuggle drugs. Their embassies have to work hard to try secure their release. But how can you release a criminal, who is smuggling drugs or committing a crime? If someone commits a crime in London or New York and are caught then they will go to prison. But in my country if we imprison them, the media have a field day about our lack of human rights.

So it is an issue of keeping people safe on the streets?

Exactly. When people come to the UAE they come because they want to. People want to work there, retire there and be buried there because we take care of them, we feel they are part of us and they feel we are part of them. Our country is multinational, with people from all over the world. In fact, we are the minority as UAE citizens. We try to make everything great for everybody; we provide them with nice homes, good infrastructure, and two of the world’s best airlines are from the UAE, we provide good education and healthcare. You cannot compare it to anywhere else in the world.

Why do you think the United Arab Emirates - and particularly Dubai - recovered so quickly from the global economic crisis? Would you say that

I the country, and we are always carrying the flag of the United Arab Emirates high. We work very hard jointly with the government, to partner with them for the growth of the country. We share our ideas and we discuss our infrastructural projects with them.

You have set up a foundation in your name, the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation. Tell me more about this?

I donated 20 per cent of my company shares to the Foundation. It was launched in January 2013 with the aim of improving the lives of impoverished people, providing aid to people abroad and providing assistance and grants to researchers and scholars. It is based at the Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque and Centre in Dubai.

Something very close to your heart is trying to fight world poverty. Tell us about your Poverty Alleviation Plan?

I am studying an idea and we are going to discuss it in Illinois College in Jacksonville with the former Congressman Paul Findley and former President Jimmy Carter. It is based on the main faiths which urge followers to ‘give back’ to the community. For Muslims, we call it Zakat. The Jews have something similar and the Christian faith also encourages to give to the poor. If we gather all these funds then I don’t think there will be any poor people in the world.


C3 SUMMIT


Your plan calls for world governments to put a percentage of this wealth into a pot to help alleviate poverty?

Yes. I am not suggesting they take any more funds from people's pockets or personal wealth. Governments can take it from the income tax they are already getting. It should be run by a non-governmental body in a neutral country and indepdendently audited.

Another topic close to your heart is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I know you have strong views on this?

For a very long time, all over world, including the most powerful country on this earth - the United States of America - unfortunately, no-one has put enough pressure on both sides in my opinon. There is a weak side and a strong side, and they need to be brought together and they have to work together. Believe me, if the US and the West wanted to put an end to the crisis they could, but unfortunately no-one is interested.

So this is why you are taking an active role instead?

Yes. The governments have no real

interest. I’m working with President Carter and Congressman Paul Findley and Illinois College. We will organise seminars with the faculty and students. We are planning to send them to Israel and Palestine to visit schools, universities, etc. We want them to come up with several scenarios to try and put an end to the conflict and come up with a lasting resolution. I cannot guarantee success the first time, but we will do our best and keep trying.

Is it true that you have personally written to world leaders telling them where they have gone wrong with some of their policies?

I wrote to two world leaders. I wrote to US President Barack Obama and I wrote to British Prime Minister David Cameron. I received a response and acknowledgement and thanks from David Cameron personally, and then I received communication from the Commander in Chief of the British Armed Forces. But unfortunately I have not received any acknowledgment from the White House.


arlier this month [October 2014], I had the privilege of spending quality time

exchanging ideas with President Carter and his wife Rosalynn at The Carter Center in Atlanta as well as at Illinois College, Jacksonville, where he came at my invitation to initiate ‘Pathways to Peace’ - a proposal designed to find solutions for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, an issue afflicting our region and the West.

Regularly held seminars involving 12 Illinois College students and faculty members will be held in the spring of 2015 so that participants can study methods of resolving ethnic, cultural and religious conflicts with a view to nurturing fresh ideas on how to bring an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Students will travel to Jordan, Palestine and Israel to meet with other students and decision-makers and to garner their opinions. Final papers will be presented to me in Dubai for evaluation.

“I really think the problem is we don’t see other people’s points of views,” was the insightful message from Illinois

College President Barbara Farley. “We just try to push our own. So we need to get people over there to see what’s going on and then say how can we change what’s going on over there based on their beliefs not on our beliefs.”

Having President Carter on board gives this initiative impetus and the gravitas it deserves. Thank you, Mr. President, for answering the call without hesitation and for being an outstanding leadership role model at a time when true leadership is sorely lacking worldwide. While you are out there, working hard to assist the poor and disenfranchised, unafraid to speak the truth about the plight of the Palestinians, others make meaningless diplomatic noises. Presidents, Prime Ministers and human rights organisations are big on talk but do anything to back-up their words. You make a difference.

Not for you a quiet retirement on the golf course. You fly from country to country, even those that are conflict-ridden or undergoing epidemics, risking your life for the betterment of mankind irrespective of race or colour. To quote

my friend, Congressman Paul Findley, who has worked tirelessly for the Palestinian cause, “Jimmy Carter is the only president whose presidency didn’t end after he left the White House”.

Like Barack Obama, President Carter was the recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize. The difference is that whereas Jimmy Carter earned his “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights and to promote economic and social development”, Obama has done nothing but make hollow promises.

When Carter said “I’ll never tell a lie” and “I’ll never avoid a controversial issue” during the run-up to his election, he meant every word, but, unfortunately, the Iranian hostage crisis and America’s failed attempt to release its citizens forcibly held by Iranian radicals in the US embassy, cast a shadow over his re-election prospects. He told the packed-to-capacity hall at Illinois College that when he is asked about how his life has been in the last few years he cites

President Carter’s presidential achievements should not be glossed-over. One of the most outstanding was his mediation at Camp David that helped to seal an Israeli-Egyptian peace deal and laid the foundations for future Israeli-Palestinian negotiations on two states. His reflections and insights on that era can be found in his book “The Blood of Abraham”. He aspired to making his government competent and compassionate; he produced eight million jobs and reduced the budget deficit. He expanded the National Parks by millions of acres, improved the Social Security system and ensured that government jobs were available to women, African Americans and Hispanics. Moreover, he boldly established diplomatic relations with China and successfully negotiated a nuclear limitation treaty with the Soviet Union.

Determined to continue making a difference, Mr and Mrs Carter opened The Carter Center -a nongovernmental, non-profit organisation to ‘advance human rights and alleviate human suffering’ in 1982 in Atlanta partnered with Emory University. Besides being a respected, neutral election observing body, it mediates conflicts, champions human rights, and works to eradicate diseases. President Carter has been a hands-on founder clearing the path

for a US-North Korea nuclear pact; accompanying Colin Powell to Haiti to restore the country’s democratically-elected president, negotiating a treaty between Sudan and Uganda and making an historic visit to Cuba aimed at improving US-Cuban relations.

However, elusive peace between Israel and the Palestinians remains close to this heart. His best-selling book “Palestine: Peace not Apartheid” was praised for its honesty in a climate hostile to opponents of Israeli policies and condemned by the pro-Israel lobby for bordering on anti-Semitism, a label Israeli advocates throw around like confetti in an attempt to cast a slur on anyone who dares to challenge Israel’s impunity.

Undeterred, President Carter said, “Many controversial issues concerning Palestine and the path to peace for Israel are intensely debated among Israelis and throughout other nations - but not in the United States. This reluctance to criticise any policies of the Israeli government is because of the extraordinary lobbying efforts of the American-Israeli Political Action Committee and the absence of any significant contrary voices.”

Following Israel’s recent onslaught on Gaza that robbed over 2,000 Palestinians of their lives and displaced 250,000 from their homes, President Carter condemned Israel for committing war crimes. He called for international judicial proceedings to

hold Israel to account and for Israel to immediately lift the blockade on the Gaza Strip.

President Carter’s career is indelibly associated with compassion for those less fortunate and his passion to further human rights. His humility is well-known. At his inauguration he waved away a limousine in favour of strolling with his wife down Pennsylvania Avenue and he always carried his own bag when boarding Air Force One. I’ve met him three times, including twice in Dubai where I hosted him and members of his family at my farm. A former farmer, he was entranced by our farm animals and felt right at home.

I’ve always found him to be very humble, gracious, positive and energetic. In short, an impressive human being who takes his Christian values seriously. His wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, has been his right hand since they wed in 1946. A forceful personality in her own right, she was present at Cabinet and Policy meetings during her years at the White House and was appointed US envoy to Latin America. I think President Carter would willingly endorse the saying, ‘Behind every great man is a woman’. One thing’s for certain. If there were more people with influence with President Carter’s courage and commitment our world would be a far better and more peaceful place.

aimed at bringing fresh ideas to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict resolution, at Illinois College with his friends, former US President Jimmy Carter and former Congressman Paul Findley on hand to share in the momentous occasion.

Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor is a proud Arab who respects the culture and tradition of his region, while embracing Western practices. He is vocal and stoic with his beliefs, and he abhors injustice. Furthermore, he knows what it feels like to be lacking some of the most basic human rights. He came from humble beginnings. Today, he sits on an empire worth billions. His rags to riches story perhaps has shaped him into the man he is - a philanthropist and humanitarian caring for all humankind, and his success in business has put in a position to be able to help causes close to his heart.

Al Habtoor has long voiced his support for an Israeli-Palestinian conflict resolution, and he has been vocal about his disappointment of the lack of concrete action by world leaders. This is why he has taken the bull by the horns to play an active role in helping to find a lasting solution to the crisis. He has put a lot of time and energy into finding practical and realistic ways to help secure lasting peace between Israel and Palestine. He proposed his idea to

the faculty at Illinois College in the US, and the Honorable Paul Findley, and he invited Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States to attend. Carter and Al Habtoor had met twice previously in Dubai over their joint passion for a resolution to the Middle East conflict.

‘Pathways to Peace’ is centred around a semester-long seminar in which some of Illinois College’s most impressive students and faculty will dedicate themselves to better understanding historical examples of cultural, religious and ethnic conflicts, and the steps taken to resolve those problems. Participants will draw on their learnings to propose new innovative approaches to addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and will have the opportunity to travel to the Middle East at the conclusion of the seminar to meet with peers in the region and share their ideas.

“My generation has failed to come up with durable solutions to this conflict and yet I remain optimistic that peace is achievable in my lifetime,” said Al Habtoor. “I have every belief that with fresh thinking and energy of the talented faculty and students at Illinois College, new approaches will be pioneered that will one day lead to a lasting peace.”

In addition to course readings and guided study with Illinois College faculty, the 12 students participating in the seminar will have the benefit of workshops and guest lectures. Meeting

weekly in the Al Habtoor Leadership Library, students will study a wide range of conflicts and get to engage with foreign policy practitioners who will lead a discussion of obstacles to the peace process in the United States.

The goal is to provide students and faculty with examples of methods used to resolve examples of ethnic, cultural and religious conflicts, which the seminar participants can apply to the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts as potential ‘Pathways to Peace’. Students and faculty will present the ideas they develop to Al Habtoor in Dubai with the collaboration of The Carter Center.

“Young people have this inspiring energy and unwaveringly optimistic world view that allows them to think creatively and overcome political hurdles politicians are sometimes unable to surmount. I want to unleash this power on the Middle East peace process and give the promising students here at Illinois College a chance to make a real contribution to the global dialogue,” said Al Habtoor, who both conceived of and funded the project.

“We are excited to launch this new program with generous support from Dr Al Habtoor. Our students aspire to be global citizens and are brimming with enthusiasm for the opportunity to make their voices heard,” remarked President of Illinois College, Dr Barbara A. Edwards Farley.

It is wonderful to be back at Illinois College. Illinois College is a very dear place to my heart. And the credit in introducing me to this place goes to my good friend the former US Congressman - the Honourable Paul Findley. Thank you Paul.

I am honoured that President Jimmy Carter has accepted my invitation to visit Illinois College. And I look forward to the launch of the 'Pathways to Peace' initiative with him. Thank you President Carter.

As you all know, President Carter tirelessly calls for a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Through my Foundation, the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation, I have worked with and supported The Carter Center for several years now and will continue to do so in their efforts towards the Palestinian-Israeli conflict resolution.

I have big hopes that my idea, the idea we are launching today, can help bring about a realistic solution to the problem and in time bring lasting peace. I am a realistic man and I set my goals with a real view. I will not dream and stick to the romantic idea that the Palestinians will return to Palestine, because there are different facts that have made this impossible and we have to live with them.

President Carter and his team have worked very hard to find solutions. Many like him and Paul are loyal to the cause and will not hesitate to do what it takes.

The Palestinian-Israeli struggle is always at the forefront of my thinking. And while exhausting all the current solutions. I thought “why not try a different approach?” The idea of this initiative came to my mind. And after careful consideration, I discussed it with my team and we suggested it to Illinois College. With the assistance of Professor Andrew Findley and the faculty, we have drafted this proposal that we call 'Pathways to Peace'.

Everyone hopes the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is resolved sooner than later, but most probably, it will fall on the shoulders of our children. Their minds and way of thinking is different from ours. And for that reason, they should take part in finding the solution. They should be asked to find scenarios and solutions to the conflict. They understand what their generation thinks and how they need to address this issue.

‘Pathways to Peace’ is a seminar focused on historical examples of different religious, ethnic and cultural conflicts and steps taken to resolve these problems. The examples of methods used to resolves those conflicts can be applied as potential ‘Pathways to Peace’.

The faculty and students involved will travel to Jordan and, if the security situation allows, to Palestine and Israel. They will meet with Palestinian and Israeli students. They will try to understand them and their needs first-hand.

My hope is that they can reach a realistic solution that could help the peace process move forward. I realise that the project might not be successful the first time, but we will try again and again. This is too important an issue for us not to try every possible way to see it happen.

ervice in Congress provided me acquaintance, and in a few cases, close friendship, with

people of historic importance. Two of them spoke to an enthusiastic crowd of 2,000 last Tuesday [October 14, 2014] at Illinois College. One was former President Jimmy Carter, whom I believe to be the most-respected American worldwide. The other was Dr Khalaf Al Habtoor of Dubai, still in mid-career but climbing fast in business, philanthropy, education and leadership in the Arab world.For me, it was a brief but happy trip down memory lane. I first met Carter in January 1977 when he took the oath of office as US President. As he climbed to world prominence in Middle East policy, my committee assignments occasionally put me in small gatherings with Carter

in the White House.Of the seven presidents with whom I served, he stood out as a remarkable human being. He was kind, a good listener, always considerate, devoid of pretense and eager to cooperate.He could be tough as steel. On two important but unpublicised occasions, he forced the Israeli prime minister to stop military operations in Lebanon that violated US law. In Camp David diplomacy that produced a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, he kept President Anwar Sadat of Egypt from leaving the scene in disgust over the intransigence of Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and on another occasion he secured an important concession from Begin that again kept negotiations alive. After Arab South Yemen became a part of my life in 1974,

I urged Carter to reopen diplomatic relations with the local government. Carter told me, “I will see to it.” And he did.Carter was an exceptional president. When voters denied him a second term, he left the White House but took his presidency with him. Raising funds entirely in the private sector, he created The Carter Center in Atlanta and assembled a staff that helps him carry on much of the remarkable foreign and domestic endeavors his White House staff helped him advance. His team now totals 155 professionals based mainly in Atlanta but with outposts in several countries, three in the Middle East. He is currently supervising the construction of 200 Habitat for Humanity homes in Texas. He and his wife will often be found with hammer and saw, helping to

When home on Sundays in their modest bungalow in Plains, Georgia, Carter always teaches a Sunday school class. He travels the world advancing democracy, human rights, especially the plight of women, and peace.His unique presidency has now been underway for nearly 40 years - not just four. In addition to writing 28 books, he, like Al Habtoor, has championed Palestinian rights for 40 years.Last Tuesday, he met members of the Phi Alpha Literary Society, the lecture hosts, who welcomed him as an honorary member, then gave him a rousing sendoff with a lusty - almost ear-splitting - rendition of the society song. Smiling broadly at Carter's side was his sponsor, honorary Phi Alpha member Al Habtoor, Dubai philanthropist and business leader who had heard the song at his own induction three years ago. Both were still smiling an hour later when I met them at lunch hosted by Illinois College President Barbara Farley.Al Habtoor is like Abraham Lincoln in several respects. He had little

classroom education, leaving school after completing the elementary sixth grade. He is a self-taught engineer, architect, builder and sponsor of three new institutions of higher education in the Emirates.He is one of the original - perhaps the greatest - members of a small group of pioneers who created a modern-era wonder of the world, the city of Dubai. On what 40 years ago was a nearly-barren stretch of sand dunes on the Arabian Gulf, now stand scores of skyscrapers - all modern, gleaming and bustling with business activity. The million people who now live in Dubai have replaced Beirut as the chief city of commerce and banking in the Middle East.When Al Habtoor walks to his office early each morning, he will often stop halfway for prayer at a splendid mosque he built three ago as a gift to the people of Dubai. During my visit to the mosque two years ago, its beauty struck me as unmatched by any structure I had seen in wide travels.I first met Al Habtoor nearly 30 years ago on my first visit to the United Arab Emirates. He was then a young engineer but already owned the largest

hotel in Dubai. Today he owns many hotels including four internationally, along with multiple other companies. He provides employment to thousands of families. He is a rare billionaire who invests his earnings in education, anti-poverty programs and peace efforts. At Illinois College he is building an educational structure, 'Pathways to Peace', that carries the promise of mutual understanding between East and West. Endorsed by Carter, the program will yield broad learning for faculty and students in conflict resolution. With grandfatherly pride, I mention that the first outline was designed by Dr. Andrew Findley, a professor at Rose-Hulman Institute.Al Habtoor and Carter spoke in Jacksonville as the 17th annual lecture event sponsored by Phi Alpha Literary Society. Past lecturers and honorary members of Phi Alpha, include Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain.Al Habtoor came into my life because of our common concern over the plight of Palestinians. Like Carter, he speaks out for the underprivileged in articles and books. He never looks back, always forward. He never gives up.

Al Habtoor, who is an ardent supporter of former President Carter’s work and the work of The Carter Center, said, “It was good to

see first-hand the work The Carter Center does. We had the opportunity to discuss our shared desire to find a durable solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and I thanked the former President for his long-standing dedication to the cause of achieving peace in the Arab world.”

Al Habtoor and the former President first met in Dubai in 2010 where they shared a passion for human rights and their respective work towards a resolution to the Israeli, Palestinian conflict.

halaf Al Habtoor dedicated the school’s recently renovated and dramatically

expanded archives, now The Khalaf Al Habtoor Archives on Monday October 13, 2014. With an impressive collection of rare books, some dating back over 500 years, and historical documents, including a number signed by President Abraham Lincoln, the Archives are an important resource for the Illinois College community and scholars from around the world. Al Habtoor had the added benefit of giving former US President Jimmy Carter a tour of the facilities the following day.

The expanded Archives, spread across 1,500 square feet, include a reading and research room and state-of-the-art climate controls to ensure the long-term safety and preservation of this important collection.

In addition to the physical renovation and expansion, Al Habtoor has given

funding that will allow for a fulltime professional archivist to ensure the collection is fully utilised by students, faculty, and other historians.

Al Habtoor said, “It is important for us to preserve history for the benefit of our children and our grand-children. We need to protect documents like those of my friend the Honorable Paul Findley and the Great Leader Abraham Lincoln for future generations to come.”

The Khalaf Al Habtoor Archives at Illinois College is also home to the Congressional Office Museum of the former Congressman Paul A. Findley. Complete with a replica of the Congressman’s office, the Museum is one of the few Congressional Office Museums in the United States and offers a rare opportunity for those interested in studying the Congressman’s work to access primary source materials. In addition to the many official papers in

the Museum, it displays a wide range of artifacts from the Congressman’s travels in the Middle East and around the world.

“I have known Congressman Findley for years and it brings me great joy to be able to help a new generation understand the tremendous contributions my friend has made to Middle East peace efforts as well as human rights and international diplomacy initiatives Paul was instrumental in championing,” remarked Al Habtoor.

Dr Barbara A. Edwards Farley, President of Illinois College said, “Dr Al Habtoor’s generosity and continued support of the Illinois College archives will provide students and faculty here a chance to better understand and appreciate world events by drawing on the wonderful example set by our prestigious alumnus former Congressman Findley.”

About one billion people in the world live in extreme poverty, earning less than US$1.25 per day, according to World Bank statistics. Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, Chairman of the Al Habtoor Group says that this is moral obscenity in the 21st century. He believes that world governments aren’t doing enough to tackle the issue, which is why, through his philanthropic foundation - The Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation - he has come up with a comprehensive proposal of his own aimed at alleviating global poverty. It calls on global governments to take an active role in stemming poverty by imposing a ‘global poverty tax’. Joanna Andrews brings you the details of his ambitious plan.

halaf Ahmad Al Habtoor may be a successful businessman, but he is also a father, a

philanthropist and humanitarian. The Al Habtoor Group Chairman says he can’t just sit back and watch one seventh of the world suffer, which is why he has drafted up a proposal to help significantly reduce global poverty.

The United Nations predicts that the world’s population is expected to grow from around seven billion today to 11 billion people by 2050, placing an even bigger burden on global governments and the world’s ever-scarcer resources.

Al Habtoor’s Poverty Alleviation Plan, which he says needs a better name, aims to fast-track the alleviation of global poverty with the introduction of a poverty tax. If adopted, he firmly believes it will accelerate the Millennium Development’s goal of eradicating extreme poverty.

He praises efforts by the Millennium Goal on Poverty, which hopes to reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than US$1 per day and half those who suffer in hunger. However, Al Habtoor warns that in this conflict-afflicted era, there is more pressure than ever to address the issue.

He says that ‘The Giving Pledge’ launched by Bill and Melinda Gates - a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy

- illustrates the willingness of at least 135 billionaires to ‘give back’ to those in desperate circumstances.

“Their efforts should be congratulated and it’s possible that the total donations could be equivalent to the GDP of several medium-sized countries, but, nevertheless, in comparison to the need, such generosity represents a drop in the ocean. Lifting a billion human beings out of poverty must ultimately be the responsibility of governments.”

He adds, “It is strongly contended here that the entirely fresh approach is required so as to keep pace with popu-lation growth, burgeoning refugee pop-ulations, as well as the re-emergence of previously eradicated diseases and inflationary trends. Ensuring that no human being is left behind is a task of major proportions that should not be reliant on the fluctuating charitable propensities of individual governments or the philanthropic sentiments of wealthy individuals/charitable trusts/corporations.”

“Children with swollen stomachs due to malnutrition, families sleeping under cardboard or corrugated iron and individuals dying from curable diseases because they are unable to afford medicines cannot wait and must be helped now.”

Al Habtoor proposes a global system of revenue-raising, or a ‘poverty tax’. This is a more ambitious idea than the one advocated in the US Senate

by President Barack Obama in 2007, which failed to get off the ground.

Al Habtoor’s plan requires governments to pledge 2.5 per cent of their tax revenues - or an agreed percentage - annually to a new independent body to be founded in a neutral country, tasked solely with poverty-reduction that would be immune to political influence and subject to independent auditing. It might require that governments find new revenue streams so as not to negatively affect fiscal budgets.

Al Habtoor also notes that, according to Oxfam, at least US$18.5 trillion is deposited in tax havens. This figure represents a US$156 billion in lost revenue. Furthermore, the statistics don’t include major companies or corporations who find legal loopholes to dodge tax. With the gap between the haves and have-nots getting bigger, he believes this needs to be addressed. Kevin Rousell, who is Head of Oxfam’s International Essential Services Campaign, is quoted as saying that those trillions would be enough to end extremely poverty in the world twice over!

Al Habtoor concludes by saying, that as citizens of the world, we have not only moral obligations but religious ones too - no matter what our religious belief, “All the world’s greatest faiths exhort its believers to take care of the poor.”

eeling proud to be Arab isn’t easy nowadays. What’s there to be proud of when bodies

are piling high in Syria, Iraq, Gaza and Libya while the Arab World does little except to appeal for help from the US and its allies, which only intervene militarily when such intervention suits their geopolitical interests?

President Obama is a maestro of finger-wagging and uttering condemnations but when it comes to acting in dire emergencies his record is poor. His foreign policy is a maze of directionless confusion as his approval ratings evidence. He stepped in to relieve Libya of its dictator and subsequently abandoned the country to feuding militias while ignoring recent calls by the Libyan government for urgent assistance. He pledged to arm the Syrian opposition only to renege on that promise and, worse, he pulled back from military intervention there are at the 11th hour, permitting the Assad regime to continue slaughtering its own

citizens.Likewise, he’s displayed glaring

double standards over Israel’s massacre of almost 2,000 Palestinians in Gaza, handing out light criticisms of Israel’s disproportionate assaults while re-supplying Netanyahu with heavy weapons in equal measure. Moreover, the White House has chosen to bash Egypt, currently mediating sensitive negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators, over its jailing of three Al Jazeera journalists, which is laughable given the carnage throughout the region, not to mention that several journalists were arrested and others gassed during the recent riots in Ferguson, Missouri.

Just days ago, he gave a press conference announcing that he was sending the cavalry to rescue thousands of Yezidis trapped on an arid mountain top without shade, food or water surrounded by ISIL terrorists, only to change his mind the very next day on the grounds there were only 2,000 left - a

F figure rejected by Yezidis who say there are still 10,000 in danger. The images of desperate women and children scrambling to get on aid helicopters and, in some cases, throwing their babies into the arms of someone inside, are heart-breaking. Dropping bombs just won’t cut it.

Now Obama proposes to arm the Kurdish peshmerga to take on an organisation so bloodthirsty it hands it children severed heads to parade on social media, buries people alive or nails them to crosses. It’s preposterous that 10,000 - 15,000 monstrous killers have been allowed to proliferate across northern Syria and Iraq terrorising minorities, grabbing towns, villages, weapons depots, cash from banks, power stations and a crucial dam that could be used to flood entire areas of the country as far south as the capital.

One is left wondering on why he failed to support the Syrian opposition with sophisticated weapons, but has no hesitation in arming the Kurds.

A sceptic would say that the oil-rich Kurdish region has been a US client state since Saddam’s era, which is now supplying oil to Israel via a pipeline.

America’s Commander-in-Chief seems to think that a mere change of face in Iraq’s prime ministerial chair will do the trick in that Sunni tribes sick of being oppressed and marginalised by Al-Maliki will now rally around the government, even though his replacement Haider Al-Abadi shares his predecessor’s ideology. Obama isn’t being naïve. His message is, ‘We are punishing Al-Maliki for refusing to sign our status of forces agreement but we will support Al-Abadi as long as he accepts that the US now owns him’.

In all honesty, it feels as if the US owns all of us and it’s beyond time the unhealthy dependency of Arab countries on western protection is ended because, for one thing, we are not being protected and, for another, when we have armies, ‘Made in America’ airplanes, helicopters, missiles and tanks, why aren’t we defending ourselves? Are our hefty arms purchases that help fill US and European state coffers and bump up the share prices of weapons manufacturers simply décor?

With the Arab region in such political and security disarray, GCC States should band together and take the lead. The first step would be to form a joint military under a single commander, which has been talked about, but never implemented. Together, we could wield substantial military strength that would not be ignored.

The GCC should also take a unified position on the diplomatic front. Enough issuing statements disregarded by the international community because they are not backed up with serious clout! We have so many tools that could be used for influence at our disposal if only we mustered the guts to use them. Why is it that when the US, the UN, the EU and Russia throw out sanctions like confetti, all we do is grumble? The Arabian Gulf Countries invest hundreds of billions in the US and the EU and private GCC investors account for hundreds of billions more.

Obama says he wants to pivot the US away from the Middle East. Let’s help him on his way by taking responsibility for our own security. We should start with wiping ISIL from the face of the earth before its evil contaminates our own soil. The UN Security Council has unanimously passed a resolution

barring all funding to ISIL and insisting that all UN member countries must stem recruitment. Too little, too late! It’s currently the wealthiest terrorist group in the history of the world that’s flush with captured US weapons. What I find particularly distressing is the way ISIL is being treated by the US and other countries as though it really does constitute a de facto legal state, instead of the murderous gang it is. You don’t boycott terrorists, you eradicate them. That should be self-evident but in this world gone mad, a world where black is often portrayed as white and vice versa, apparently not. When western ISIL fighters return to their home countries with an ingrained thirst for blood, perhaps then the international community will come to its senses.

Once again, I would strongly urge GCC leaders to adopt a unified strategy designed to tackle these new threats and injustices. If we continue living in the past, expecting to be taken care of by outside powers, our children’s future will be betrayed by our apathy and if something isn’t done, we risk witnessing our own borders being re-drawn.

bloodthirsty bunch of crazed head-hunters are on the rampage in Syria and Iraq

and not only threaten to disperse their poisonous ideology throughout the Middle East region but also to western capitals. Sounds like a bad fairy-tale doesn’t it? Except there is no fairy godmother in this story to banish this bloodthirsty horde. This is real and happening. And what are the self-appointed guardians of our world doing about it other than dropping bombs here and there to defend their own interests, issuing threats and distributing care packages?

Are we seriously to believe the explosive conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and what remains of the Libyan state is mere happenstance? Or could it be that a grand plan to destabilise the region using extremists is underway so as to slice-up Arab countries into easily manipulated weak entities whose natural resources will be ripe for plunder?

I believe ‘scientists’ in suits bore a creature that was nurtured and assisted to develop its murderous skills in the

same way that Al Qaeda was born and is now known as ISIS. But the creature grew so militarily, financially and ideologically powerful that it now threatens its creators’ existence; a monster that is terrorising the world with inhuman atrocities under the banner of Islam, the religion of tolerance and peace.

The reptilian creature, that’s announced a caliphate across northern Syria and Iraq with its sights set towards Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, has shed its skin and is now spewing its venom against its masters. It was manufactured in Syria as a western tool to jeopardise the Free Syrian Army’s (FSA) growing popularity throughout the Arab World and its honourable cause with the result Assad’s initially fictitious argument that he’s battling terrorists has been bolstered.

The slaughter paraded on our screens, perpetrated by masked men driving around in identical brand new Humvees, are not the work of amateurs. And neither is the serpent’s propaganda machine which uses sophisticated

messages on social media to reach out to vulnerable, gullible or disaffected young Muslims in the US and Europe who view the establishment of a caliphate as an affirmation of their identity whereas a caliphate built on rivers of blood, mountains of severed heads and girls sold as slaves is nothing but an evil abomination.

There is evidence to suggest it was covertly trained by the regional and Western powers, which abandoned the legitimate opposition, the brave men of the Free Syrian Army. Had the Leader of the Free World, President Obama, done the right thing several years ago by heeding the just demands of the FSA, tens of thousands of Syrian and Iraqi lives would have been saved, the American journalist would have been spared and the region and beyond wouldn’t be facing this menace. The FSA didn’t ask Obama for boots on the ground or to engage in a full scale war against the regime. He was merely requested to provide the FSA with air cover, heavy weapons and ammunition to assist its fight. But no, Western

weapons mysteriously found their way into the hands of extremists like Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIL which turned their guns on the FSA.

The US President should be thoroughly probed by a Congressional committee for his role in worsening the carnage in Syria and for fomenting the sectarian conflicts and lawlessness plaguing the Middle East. His intervention in Libya has brought division and destruction; his failure to respond to appeals for assistance from the Iraqi government last year has resulted in black flags fluttering over one third of the country. Moreover, his support of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt over the will of the Egyptian people would have ignited a bloody civil war if the people and the army weren’t united. Congress should investigate whether or not his actions or non-actions were in keeping with US interests and the real reasons behind his seeming support for religious extremists over moderates.

Furthermore, how can one explain the sudden flirtation between Iran and the West when for decades the United Nations, the US and Europe have applied anti-Iranian sanctions to no real effect. If Iran had been an Arab country, I’ve no doubt in my mind that it would have been invaded long ago to remove the threat, even without concrete proof that it was, indeed, developing a nuclear weapons capability, as we witnessed when ‘shock and awe’ was delivered to Iraq.

The governments of the UK and France should also be placed under a microscope for acting as America’s mini-me’s on foreign policy. They have spectacularly failed at tamping down on the monster’s recruiting drives. The British press, in particular, is packed with news about jihadists openly touting their ideology on high streets, in universities and via UK-based media outlets; they’ve even been handing out leaflets on London’s Oxford Street

The BBC regularly interviews young British Muslims praising the so-called caliphate. At least 500 – some say the figure is near 2,000 – British citizens, including would-be Jihadist brides, have travelled to Syria to take-up arms targeting Sunnis who reject ideological slavery as well as Christians and other minorities. Hundreds more have flocked there from the US, Canada and Australia. ISIL welcomed over 6,000 new recruits in July alone, including 1,100 foreigners. The idea is catching on. Boko Haram has announced its own caliphate in an area of Nigeria. Where next?

Anyone with even half a brain cannot fail to wonder why no firm action has

been taken to prevent this tide, which will sooner or later return to hit western shores with a violent tsunami of cataclysmic proportions, under the pretence of free expression and respect for individual freedoms. Former UK Foreign Minister Kim Howells believes home grown terrorists may be planning a spectacular attack on the NATO summit to be held in Cardiff next month.

Why are terrorists boasting of their exploits or encouraging their children to proudly display severed heads on the internet being given a free pass when purveyors of child pornography are so easily be rounded up, not to

mention celebrities accused of crimes committed more than thirty years ago?

A question that demands urgent answering is this. Are the implosions and explosions throughout the Arab world caused by internal circumstances or random acts of fate - or have they been deliberately orchestrated by unseen hands? I’ve come to my own conclusions; I’ll leave you to ponder on yours.

Jones’ Green, Green Grass of Home is now peppered with tanks and missiles while Cardiff plays host to mighty warships. Enemies of the West must be quaking in their boots; except they’re not. They must be chuckling at the hollow rhetoric coming out of the mouths of the Leader of the Free World and his European allies, empty words delivered in the presence of representatives from four Arab countries. Are they there to write a script for one of Adel Imam’s famous humorous parodies on life; this situation is starting to look like fodder for one of this legendary Egyptian actor’s movies?

Our planet is experiencing unprecedented man-made crises. Like me, people everywhere are asking, ‘What’s happening to our world?’ We look at those leaders and think, if these are the people responsible for protecting

our lives, then God help us.As unbelievable as it sounds, here’s

the plot. Take note please, Adel Imam!A gang of losers seeking power,

wealth and territory decide to dupe feeble-minded young Muslims with the promise of an Islamist State; a Utopian land stretching from Syria to Iraq and eventually encompassing Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia where flogging, stoning, beheading, crucifying and burying children alive are accepted norms. In this ‘magical caliphate’ women recognisable only by their eyes are barred from leaving home without a close male relative. Televisions are smashed. Schools are forbidden to teach music, art and philosophy. Smokers are lashed in public. Landmarks are painted black to match the group’s fluttering flags.

This is a place where fake Imam’s tell followers “We will take you to Paradise, even if we have to drag you in chains on the way there”. This hell on earth

not only attracts educated fighters from distant shores, it holds an appeal for young western girls eager to become brides and breed a new generation of psychopaths.

Some 10,000 – 15,000 masked and attired in black, of course, initially succeed in taking swathes of Syrian and Iraqi territories larger than the size of the United Kingdom, virtually unopposed. Armies run from those thugs like rabbits; soldiers caught and stripped are mercilessly executed. Tens of thousands of civilians flee to a barren mountain top where many succumb to thirst. Parents weak from hunger and dehydration are forced to abandon elderly parents and young children to the sands during escapes.

In the meantime, the fanatics consolidate their state flush with ‘Made in America’ weapons and a treasure chest overflowing with oil revenues, cash plundered from banks, kidnap ransoms and the sale of women and girls in the

local slave market. Nobody can accuse them of being disorganised. They’re managing civil society, overseeing public institutions, passing laws, hiring experts to advise them in various fields and doing a roaring trade in Iraq’s natural resources.

No, Mr. Imam, this isn’t a period movie set in the 10th century; it’s a contemporary reflection of events happening now. What’s that you say? It lacks credibility? Yes, I know that Egyptian audiences aren’t that dumb to fall for such a fantastical, unrealistic scenario…but…

Yesterday, while watching the most powerful men on earth discussing what to do about the so-called Islamic State during the NATO summit, I felt an impending sense of doom. What’s there to discuss! Eradicating a handful of murderous criminals before the contagion spreads is surely no challenge for a superpower. The US and its allies didn’t hesitate in going after Saddam Hussein’s non-existent weapons of mass destruction or to invade Afghanistan to smoke out a cave dweller. In truth, they must bear responsibility for this gang’s rise; ISIS now IS - drew strength and popularity out of Obama’s inaction in Syria to end the regime’s slaughter of its own people. Its seeming success, amplified by its well-oiled propaganda machine, spawns tentacles reaching into dungeons, back alleys and tunnels creating a complex web of danger.

Yet, in the case of IS, President Obama and his sidekick David Cameron have ruled out boots on the ground. Even, their pledge to arm the Kurdish Peshmerga, battling to protect Irbil as well as besieged minorities, has yet to manifest. Dropping bombs on IS convoys won’t cut it. Why? Because

those extremists will simply blend with local populations or head back into northern Syria to re-group. And as Obama has controversially admitted, he has no strategy to attack the Islamist State in Syria, where it’s headquartered. Bravo David Cameron! It’s so reassuring to know that the UK government is compiling evidence against Islamic State fighters for crimes against humanity. I’ll bet those cockroaches preferring death to life are suffering sleepless nights worrying about ending up behind bars in The Hague. They deserve pest control not a panel of judges.

If the United States, Europe and NATO are too cowardly to confront this scourge they should hire mercenaries headed by former military/intelligence chiefs to do the job for them, just as security firms like the infamous Blackwater which, in 2003, terrorised populations in Iraq. The Sicilian Mafia would be more effective than Obama and co. Perhaps the Peruvian Shining

Path or the Colombian Farc could be persuaded.

However, there is one question that bugs me more than most. Where are the Arabs? This madness is playing out on our doorstep; it threatens us directly and imminently. The fact that it hides under the banner

of Islam is nothing short of a sacrilegious assault on our faith. Forget the Arab world as an entity; it’s disunited and in disarray! The GCC has the fire power and expertise to militarily intervene on its own. GCC states don’t need permission from Washington to protect themselves or our brothers in Iraq and Syria. Why aren’t we embarrassed that the Kurds are battling on our behalf? If we don’t stand up to this threat and others, such as the Shi’ite Houthis bent on the destruction of Yemen, not only

history will stand judge, so will our great-grandchildren.

There are no heroes in this unfolding script; only rogues, wimps and fools marching us towards Armageddon. And as for Obama and Cameron, they’re nothing but strutting bit part actors in a plot that gives them the jitters. The US President appears to have stage fright desperately seeking cues and lines from the British PM. Neither displays the presence of a leader capable of rescuing the world, like Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill or Dwight Eisenhower, not to mention our great Arab personalities, such as Omar bin Al Khattab and Khalid bin Al-Waleed, whose word was their bond, and whose bravery was beyond reproach.

In this B-rated film, a bunch of bloodthirsty bad guys emerge as victors. I can only pray for a different ending before it hits theatres close to all of us.

resident Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to New York to speak before the United Nations

General Assembly was not only a public relations coup, he and his team did some furious networking with heads of state, politicians, and the American business community. During his stay, he met with the Clintons, foreign policy veterans Henry Kissinger and Madeleine Albright, Prime Minister David Cameron, as well as UN Secretary-General Ban-ki Moon. He also received a last minute invitation from President Obama to talk about regional security issues and the future of US-Egyptian relations. If he was on a charm-offensive, then judging by the smiles and body-language of all the prominent people he was pictured with - even that of several of his earlier critics - it worked like charm. Indeed, he flew home with a fistful of invitations to visit a host of countries, including Germany and South Korea.

But if confirmation was needed that the Egyptian President has finally emerged from the cold, it came when it was his turn to speak to UN delegations. He was visibly taken aback and humbled by the warm applause he received as he stepped up to podium and was clearly gratified to receive a standing ovation following his speech when almost everyone in attendance echoed his parting words “Tahya Misr...Tahya Misr” (Long Live Egypt!)

Outside, thousands of Egyptians waved flags, hoisted posters of the president and sang patriotic songs to show their gratitude to the former military man who they believed saved Egypt from Muslim Brotherhood rule and a potential civil war. In short, Egypt took Manhattan by storm. Spectacular advertisements showing photographs of the country’s iconic landmarks with the message “peace, prosperity and growth” loomed over Times Square and were plastered on many of the city’s buses.

El-Sisi’s speech was positive throughout. He spoke of the need to

combat extremist ideologies and the “crisis of terrorism facing the region.” He championed a Palestinian State on 1967 borders, and announced that the Egyptian government seeks to build a new Egypt on the foundations of a free-market and an investor-friendly economy; a state that upholds “rights and freedoms” and “ensures the coexistence of its citizens without exclusion or discrimination”.

However, the delegates of one NATO member country weren’t in their seats to hear the Egyptian President’s message to the world. Turkey boycotted his speech and, worse, hours later, President Recip Tayyip Erdoğan devoted part of his own to condemn the United Nations for “legitimising” El-Sisi who overthrew “the elected

president in Egypt” referring, of course, to his cohort Mohamed Morsi who’s currently on trial for treachery and collusion with foreign terrorist groups, amongst other charges. El-Sisi does not need the UN to confer legitimacy on his presidency; that was received following last May’s elections which he won by 96.91 per cent and, more recently, when ordinary Egyptians raised LE 64 billion (US$8.9 billion) in just eleven days to fund his mega Suez Canal project.

of popularity among the international community due to his burgeoning authoritarianism, but his insults certainly reverberated in Cairo to the extent that Egypt swiftly cancelled a meeting scheduled to take place in New York between the two countries’ foreign ministers. Erdoğan’s insults didn’t end there. According to the Turkish daily Zaman, he “refused to attend a luncheon hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon after learning that he was assigned to the same table” as President El-Sisi along with President Obama, and South African President Jacob Zuma. Doesn’t he realise that petulance is more appropriate to the kindergarten than the world’s stage. Most of us have children or grandchildren who’ve said

at one time or another after falling out with one of their friends “I’m not going to the party because so-and-so will be there”.

Word has it that the Turkish President is out of sync with his own foreign ministry and advisors who have signalled in the past their eagerness to mend fences with Cairo. He has continually undermined their efforts indicting that he’s bent on some kind of venomous personal vendetta regardless of any negative reaction, particularly from the Arab World, his country might incur as a response.

It goes without saying that the official Egyptian reaction was scathing. “There is no doubt that the fabrication of such lies and fabrications are not something strange that comes from the Turkish President who is keen to provoke chaos to sow divisions in the Middle East region through its support for groups and terrorist organisations,” read a statement from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry. The United Arab Emirates was similarly outraged slamming Erdoğan’s speech as “a direct and blatant intervention in Egypt’s internal affairs while accusing him of exploiting the UN’s platform to launch an “unacceptable” attack on legitimacy in Egypt.

Erdoğan’s toxic speech and petty behaviours in New York are an affront to all Arabs everywhere and let’s not forget that El-Sisi was representing the Arab League at the UN on this occasion. We stood silent as the Turkish President (then Prime Minister) hosted Muslim Brotherhood conferences and flashed its ugly hand signs. But this time he’s overstepped

the mark. As far as I’m concerned, insults hurled at one of our leaders is akin to slandering all of them. He pretends that his stance is moral. In that case, why didn’t he rail against the governments of Thailand and Ukraine, which were brought to power on the back of a coup?

In truth, he’s nothing but a terrorist supporter who hugs the Muslim Brotherhood and, as was stated in the UK Parliament on Friday, purchases oil from the so-called ‘Islamic State’ in Syria and Iraq. Curiously enough, he’s not declined to partner the US-coalition against those killers but he’s barred the coalition from using Turkish airspace to launch strikes.

Let’s not forget, too, that Turkey is the transit destination for ‘Islamic State’ fighters. There’s a report in the Washington Post suggesting “Wounded jihadists from the Islamic State and the al-Nusra Front...were treated at Turkish Hospitals,” adding, “Most important, the Turks winked as Reyhanli and other Turkish towns became way stations for moving foreign fighters and arms across the border”. Moreover, Bloomberg reporters say the ‘Islamic State’ has “already established itself firmly in Turkish Society”. Apparently, they use Reyhanli as their shopping mall, where they purchase uniforms and mobile phones. In this case, it must be asked why western powers are turning a blind eye to the dubious machinations of their loudmouthed NATO partner, who’s been embroiled in corruption scandals and was recorded discussing the best ways of hiding money with his son. He is certainly no ‘Mr. Clean’ and I would appeal to the Turkish people to see him for what he truly is, not only an embarrassment, but a threat to their future wellbeing, now that he’s shown his true colours.

Sisi, a true patriot who’s is struggling against all odds to get his beloved Egypt back on its feet. He’s no verbal sniper. When he was asked by the media for his response to the Turkish President’s remarks, he declined to dignify such personal slights with an answer. Egypt’s President and the 90 million people he’s sworn to serve deserve our support. But mere condemnatory statements are not sufficient.

Despite perceptions, the Turkish economy and currency are currently heading south, as reflected by ratings agencies and highlighted by the Asia Times which reveals that “Turkey’s current account deficit... is at the level of Greece before its near-bankruptcy in 2011” but is being propped-up by “Turkey’s friends in the Gulf States”. This funding must stop now! Furthermore, the Arab World should boycott all Turkish products and companies and governments should sever diplomatic and economic ties with the Erdoğan government. Egypt’s President has pledged to stand by the Gulf States and so it’s our duty to defend him against the megalomaniacal Turk plotting to bring him down.

املقبلــة. وتوجــت الزيــارة بجولــة إىل مركــز كارتــر يف جورجيــا.وأطلــق الحبتــور مبــادرة "ســبل الســام" - وهــي عبــارة عــن مقاربــة واقعيــة تهــدف إىل إيجــاد حــل لعمليــة الســام املتعــرة يف الــرق األوســط - يف جامعــة إلينــوي مبشــاركة الرئيــس األمريــي األســبق جيمــي كارتــر وعضــو الكونغــرس الجمهوري ســابقا بــول فينديل، هذيــن الرجلــني العظيمني اللذيــن لطاملــا شــددا عــى الحاجــة إىل تســوية النــزاع اإلرسائيي-الفلســطيني. فقــد نــال الرئيــس كارتــر جائــزة نوبــل للســام عــام 2002 تقديــرا للجهــود الدؤوبــة التــي بذلهــا عــى امتــداد عقــود مــن أجــل التوصــل إىل حلــول ســلمية للنزاعــات الدوليــة ونــر الدميقراطيــة وحقــوق اإلنســان. أمــا بــول فينــديل فهــو مــن أشــد منتقــدي السياســة الخارجيــة األمريكيــة حيــال إرسائيــل ويدافــع بقــوة
