AL MAMOURA ACADEMY NEWSLETTERISSUE NO.27 | APRIL 2018

Dear Parents,

During my Open Mornings and Evenings to parents a common question I get asked is “How much screen time do children get at Al Mamoura?” It used to be that schools and classrooms were so keen to show off iPads and laptops. Now we have to be a bit more careful. Technology has it’s place, which is why I am happy to highlight above the nu-merous worthwhile Coding apps which I used to use with pupils back in the UK.

However, there is one thing I have learnt during my time as a Headteacher, teacher and par-ent. There is never a substitute for a good book. Books open worlds, create imagination, give us vocabulary and can teach us. One of the best sights I ever see at school is a child sitting with a book, either at the end of the day, start of the day or

MESSAGES

when they have finished their work. I would always encourage children in Key Stage 2 upwards to carry a “Home Reader” with them in their bag. So if they ever finish their work, are waiting or have free time, they can pick it up and immerse themselves in it.

Which moves us nicely towards next week – On Monday we’ll celebrate Al Mamoura Book Day by dressing up as characters from our favourite books. I look forward to seeing what amaz-ing characters will be walking through the doors of Al Mamou-ra and I have no doubts Mr Dow will have his camera at the ready!

Wishing you all a relaxing week-end.

We have really enjoyed the second week of our ‘People Who Help Us’ topic. Over the week we have been role playing doctors and patients. We are getting very good at writing prescriptions and using language associated with visiting the doctor. We think there are definitely some future doctors and nurses in FS1! It was great to see that so many children had read three times at home and they were very proud to receive their first prize.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS FOUNDATION STAGE 1

Please visit the FS reception area to see the reading reward photos. They will be updated every week. It has been so lovely to see all the children in their costumes today. It has given the FS1 team and children lots of fantastic ideas for the rest of our topic. Next week we will be learning about firefighters.

Well done to everyone who made extra healthy snack and lunch choices this week. Congratulations to our ‘Healthy Eaters of the Week’!

It has been another fun and busy week in Year 3 filled with lots of new and exciting learning. In Maths, we have all continued focussing on our Geometry topic looking at the properties of 3D shapes and learning about different types of lines. Some classes also enjoyed building 3D shapes out of different materials. Next week in Maths, we will be working hard to solve various shape problems.

In English this week we have been identifying and labelling the features of a diary entry, using personal pronouns correctly in our writing, describing thoughts and feelings using a range of adjectives, similes and metaphors and changing present tense verbs into the past tense. Next week in English, we will be focussing on using a variety of time connectives and writing our own diary entries incorporating the features we focussed on this week.

We have had lots of fun in Science this week. We worked hard to identify magnetic and non-magnetic materials and also thought about what various magnetic materials could be used for. Some children also enjoyed ‘Cosmic Dome’ this week and we are all looking forward to next week when we will be designing a toy that uses both attract and repel forces of magnets to function during our Science lessons.

We have had yet another great week in Year 6! In English this week, we have been looking at different language features found in newspapers and different techniques used by reporters to make their news stories more interesting. We are basing our newspaper article on the Roald Dahl book ‘Boy’ and the story of ‘The Great Mouse Plot’. The Year 6 middle learning area has turned into Mrs Pratchett’s sweet shop to inspire our budding young reporters.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS YEAR 6

In Maths, we have been focusing on formal methods using all four operations addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Next week, we will move on to solving problems with statistics. The children really enjoyed the Cosmic Dome experience in school this week. Not only was it a fun experience it also linked with our topic ‘Wonderful World’ by looking at the Earth from above.

The girls moving up to Al Mamoura Secondary are very excited about the transition day next Wednesday, as are all our dancers, singers and actors in the Emirates Palace performance.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS

Alanjohn Deeb in Year 1 Caracals completed a 2.5km fun run at Al Ain Zoo on Sunday 14th April. He managed to complete the course in 16min 34seconds and has been inspired to try and beat his time in a run in the future. It is excellent to see pupils of Al Mamoura choosing activi-ties which promote a healthy lifestyle. The PE Team and class teachers love to hear of the achievements of our students. Keep up the good work Alanjohn, hopefully this will inspire your friends to do something similar!

SPORTS NEWSSWIM GALA

This week we hosted the annual Aldar swimming gala. The gala consisted of 5 Aldar Acade-mies; Al Mamoura, Pearl, Muna, Yasmina and West Yas. The event was very successful with all schools competing to a very high and excellent standard. The squad knew the gala would be a challenge as the other schools swim in more compet-itive leagues throughout the year, but they were ready for the challenge and excited to com-pete against tougher opponents. Overall Al Mamoura finished 4th but were narrowly beaten in many of the races to placing in the top 3. Well done to Juliete Stickells who was the only Al Mamoura swimmer to achieve a 1st place in breaststroke and well done to Qais Abu-Hantash and Liliana Stickells who both finish second in their individual races, butterfly and breask-stroke. A great performance by the team and demonstrating the excellent progress they have made over the last year.

Congratulations to our squad; Year 3: Taj Ajjaoui, Qais Abu-Hantash, Liliana Stickells, Laila Di Laus, Mohamed Ha-bib, Ban Orabi, Sama Orabi and Yousef Bamadhaf. HISTORY

In History this week Year 7 presented their Roman villa models to the class, explaining how they researched, planned and made them and any problems they faced. The class then offered constructive feedback on what could be improved as well as what they did well. I was very impressed with the accuracy of the feedback as well as the models themselves; I was delighted to award so many house points! In addition, they used self-assessment to complete an evaluation form highlighting strengths/areas to develop.

They also submitted their Roman Instagram home learning projects, which celebrated one achievement of the Romans; these will form a corridor display. Home learning is to create a five-step plan of ‘How to make a model’, aimed at Year 6; this will draw on their recent experiences.

Next week they will start their new topic, ‘Life on the Home Front of Britain during World War II’, which will be a very different to the topics studied so far! This topic has always proved very popular with pupils in the past and I am looking forward to starting it! The Horrible Histories book ‘Blitzed Britains’ provides excellent background reading on this topic.

SECONDARY NEWSYear 8 submitted their Slave Stories, a project that they began in January. They completed an evaluation form, assessing which chapters included factual detail/English writing techniques and which they could improve. In addition, they presented to the class on the abolitionist they researched, saying who he was and how he helped to end slavery. Home Learning is to create a poster summarizing which evidence can be used to learn about Slavery. As an extension, they can select which evidence tells us the most and what the evidence cannot tell us.

Year 9 presented their World War I trench models to the class, explaining how they researched, planned and made them and any problems they faced. The class then offered constructive feedback on what could be improved as well as what they did well. They were then rewarded for their hard work; many of the models were very impressive and have provided inspiration for others! In addition, they used self-assessment to complete an evaluation form highlighting strengths/areas to develop. Home Learning is to create a fact-file saying what the Cold War was, who was involved and when it was; this will lead into our new topic, ‘The Cold War’, which will start next week.

Year 10 continued with their Vietnam topic, discussing why guerrilla tactics were effective and why U.S. tactics were not. The girls each presented on one U.S. tactic, taking the role of teacher. Home learning is to create a mind-map of why the U.S. got involved in the war and revise the content so far; they now have a text book to help them, as well as class notes

HISTORY
