'JAB HARRY MET SEJAL': BANAL ANDLACKS EMOTIONAL CONNECT

CAST: SHAH RUKH KHAN, ANUSHKA

SHARMA, EVELYN SHARMA, CHANDAN ROY

SANYAL AND ARU KRISHANSH VERMA

DIRECTOR: IMITAZ ALI

If you are content to simply bask in the company of a middle-agedShah Rukh Khan and half-his-age Anushka Sharma, the two attractiveleads who star as Harinder Singh Nehra aka Harry, a Punjabi, andSejal Jhaveri, a Gujarati, then this romance is for you. Otherwise, youwould be questioning your motive for sitting through this film. Onceagain, it's hard to put too much hate on a film thatclearly tries hard to dazzle its fans, but the elephantin the room here is clearly the script.Yes, this is a wonderful film to gawk at as the localesin Europe are beautiful, but you will find that you aredoing just that. The plot meanders on multiple occa-sions and the characters, especially Sejal, is givensome of the most atrocious dialogues that make youchuckle inadver tently. Sejal is a tourist in Europe, who at the airpor t on her way back to India, realisesthat she has lost her engagement ring. Disappointed, dejected and defiant, she opts out of the group to searchher ring. She ropes in her tour guide Harry in herendeavour. The premise, albeit cliched, and the set-ting promise an enter taining romance. But alas, it isnowhere palpable.Imitaz Ali's latest oeuvre seems to be mounted on anoutdated, perfunctory script packed with cardboardthin characters, silly conversations and a weak plot that lacks depth, drama and the seriousness of a hear t-felt romance. This makes theentire narrative seem forced and pretentious, and loses connect with

the audience. Added to the anguish are the per formances. Thoughboth the lead actors are ace performers, Shah Rukh does not seem toget out of his comfor t zone. His performance lacks lustre and fresh-ness. Anushka matches Shah Rukh with her energy levels but to-gether their on-screen romance lacks chemistry and chutzpah. Her

accent is fake and inconsistent.Aru Krishansh Verma as Harry's friend alongwith Evelyn Sharma as his love interest hasnothing much to offer. Chandan Roy Sanyal asGas, the illegal Bangladeshi immigrant thug, does have his moments of on-screen glory.Director Imtiaz Ali seems to have taken theeasy route assuming that a film with Shah RukhKhan will automatically work. The film sorelylacks drama, interesting twists and freshness. It trudges along on an even keel throughout. The first half is watchable as it establishes thesetting and characters, but the post interval halfdrags needlessly. The songs "Hawaayein" and"Radha" are melodious and well-picturised, butdo nothing to enhance the experience. The filmexpectedly boasts of good production valuesand the cinematographer captures the beauty

of Europe with utmost sincerity. Overall, good actors cannot uplift apoor script and aJab Harry Met Sejal' suffers from that and a lot more. With low enter tainment quotient this one fails to appeal.

Nihalani hits out at 'BabumoshaiBandookbaaz' makersMUMBAI, (IANS) A day after filmmakers from the IndianFilm and Television Directors Association (IFTDA) gath-ered together in support of Kushan Nandys "BabumoshaiBandookbaaz", which has been ordered many major ver-bal and visual cuts, censor board chief Pahlaj Nihalanihas hit out at the movie's suppor ters for defaming theCBFC. Nihalani claims the brouhaha with the IFTDA hasbeen planned to br ing publ ic i ty for "BabumoshaiBandookbaaz" in collusion with "disgruntled elements"from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). "Look at thetiming of their so-called revolt against the CBFC. Kushan Nandy(director) and his producer (Kiran Shroff) had come to us for acertificate in the first week of July. We had given them an 'A' certifi-cate with many cuts which included graphic scenes of lovemakingand explicit references to inflamed body parts."They had the choice of either going to the Revising Committee orthe Tribunal (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal). They chose to gostraight to the Tribunal. Now when the Tribunal is viewing their filmthis week, they suddenly decide to create a stir around their film. And what better target than the CFBC? Where were they for month? What happened to suddenly awaken their dormant liberal impulses?"Recently, the cast and crew of the film, including actors NawazuddinSiddiqui and Bidita Bag, were present at a press conference con-ducted by IFTDA and some of its members like filmmaker SudhirMishra, Ashoke Pandit, Alankrita Shrivastava, VikramadityaMotwane and Rahul Dholakia were present. The film's makersclaimed the CBFC gave its justification of 48 cuts by saying that evenchildren watch an 'A' film. Shroff also claimed the members of CBFChumiliated her. Nihalani says he has no problems with the criticismleveled at the CBFC, but he questions the motive and the support theprotesters seem to have harnessed from within the CBFC. "Like Isaid, they waited for almost a month and decided to make a noise onthe eve of the film's viewing by the Tribunal about the CBFC's tyranny, injustice and non-liberal attitude. They are being supported fromelements from within the CBFC who claim to be the face of liberal-ism in the CBFC. "The meeting with the IFTDA was supposed to beattended by filmmakers. But there were individuals at the meetingwho have not made a film in decades."
