Ready High School Network

Network Purpose

• Build a commitment and enrichment of college access services in Summit County high schools focused on four key components: expectations, academic preparation, peer culture and affordability.

• Increase the percentage of Summit County high school graduates who enroll in postsecondary programs to 80%.

Purpose of Action Plan

To help students prepare to take the ACT test and get effective scores to allow them postsecondary options. Students will also participate in College Access Mentoring

Program (CAMP), college visits, hear professional speakers, etc.

Targeted Audience

Students with 1 or 2 content areas “below” college readiness as measured by EXPLORE

or estimated ACT score range below 21

Overarching Goals

• 80% of targeted cohort enrolls in college or postsecondary option

• 100% of targeted students will increase their projected ACT score from 9th grade EXPLORE to their 10th grade PLAN and 11th grade actual ACT.

• 95% of targeted students will successfully complete the coursework required to meet their career aspirations.

CAMP Action Steps

Start with targeted 9th graders after Administration of Explore test in 2011-2012 school year.

1. Administer Explore Tests to all 9th graders

2. Create a College Readiness team to determine criteria for students to gain participation in the program and they’ll implement strategies to support targeted students.

3. Obtaining individual mentors for students from Akron University

a) Use Akron students to target students who were below readiness in math& science on EXPLORE results b) Develop some other college mentoring experiences that AU students could do such as visitation based on career aspirations

5. Helping students create a rigorous curriculum for their 10th, 11th, 12th grade years. a) For the targeted group of students, map out 4 years of coursework g based on their EXPLORE career and college goals(either through ESchool Plus if available or via paper until ESchool is ready) b) Representatives from the CR team will meet with students and parents to explain EXPLORE results, show courses required for career aspirations, and map out 4 years of coursework. c) Individual monitoring of progress at the end of each semester.

6. (Initiate in 10th or 11th grade) College visits and trade school visits, and shadowing experiences based on student’s career aspirations

7. Students guided through application and financial aid process (e.g., ensure targeted students attend financial aid night with their parents). Need to make sure staff working with students are fully knowledgeable. Determine what should be left with counselors and what could be done by other staff. Create checks and balances.

8. Data—Develop system to track progress of cohort group of students over their 4 years in program. If a student is exited from the program, for example, in his/her junior year, he/she should remain as a “cohort” student for data tracking purposes since we’re tracking college going rates. Explore using a spreadsheet to track each cohort even when students potentially move in and out of a program.
