The City of Bristol is often seen as the gateway to the South West and it has never been more apparent with the announcement that Great Western’s main rail line is to be electrified, bringing Paddington Station 20 minutes closer to Bristol. Whilst this will not take effect until 2017, we have seen a notable increase in buyers moving into the area. Huge infrastructure projects such as this will only help promote Bristol as a destination for London commuters.
In addition to the rail link, the city has excellent road links to the east and west of England via the M4 and the north and south of England via the M5. For those wishing to travel further afield, Bristol Airport is eight miles to the south of Clifton.
You cannot fail to see the abundance of Georgian and Regency architecture in Bristol, particularly around the area of Clifton where our office is based. The city has a vibrant social and
WELCOME TO LOCAL VIEWWelcome to the latest edition of Local View, our seasonal update on the property markets that matter to you. Along with a brief review of activity in Bristol, we have also included a preview of just some of the beautiful properties we currently have available. Please contact your local team for more information and to find out what other opportunities we can offer.
“We have seen a 40% increase in the number of properties sold year on year demonstrating buyers’ appetite to move. Whilst we have this pent up demand, there is a distinct lack of stock to choose from. Although there is a reduction in houses available, it remains vital for vendors to be realistic when setting a guide price. We feel upbeat about 2014 which will provide an opportunity for owners to sell in a market where confidence has returned, and before 2015 when the market will be more subdued due to the pending General Election.”

cultural scene including the Bristol Old Vic Theatre. St George’s is a world class auditorium and Colston Hall and the Hippodrome provide concerts and shows throughout the year.
Bristol has a maritime history and the harbour is a natural point of historic reference. The SS Great Britain has previously won the ‘Museum of the Year’ award and there is a permanent mooring for The Matthew, replica of the Caravel sailed by John Cabot in 1497 from Bristol to North America and the M Shed is a museum dedicated to telling the story of the city through objects and stories of people from the city. The harbour is also home to the Bristol Harbour Festival, one of the UK’s largest public festivals.
The city has a large pull for families due to the schooling. It boasts several exceptional schools such as Clifton College, Badminton School for Girls, Bristol Grammar School and Queen Elizabeth Hospital amongst others. A short distance out of Bristol is The Downs School, a popular preparatory school, whilst further afield there is Wells Cathedral School in Wells, Millfield in Street, Downside in Stratton on the Fosse and Sidcot, near Winscombe.
Beyond the city limits are the rich green pastures of Somerset, famous for the Mendip Hills which have stunning views of Blagdon Lake, Chew Valley Lake and the Somerset Levels. To the north of Bristol the office incorporates the Vale of Berkeley between the River Severn and The Cotswold Edge.

R etirement used to mean slowing down and putting your feet up, and often involved upping sticks and moving to the country. But with more people living longer and wanting an active retirement, many are setting their sights on
bustling towns where there’s plenty to keep them busy, from literature festivals to art galleries.
The statistics say that a man retiring at 65 can look forward to 18.3 years of healthy life. For women, the number is 20.9. That’s a lot of days to fill, and only so many of them can be taken up with grandchildren and the crossword. Fortunately, the UK has a huge variety of options for those who have the energy and the inspiration to make the most of all the time they have on their hands.
The great outdoors is high on the list of priorities for some, and the UK has an abundance of beautiful landscape. A move to one of the thriving towns in the Cotswolds or the Peak District puts jaw-dropping scenery on your doorstep and enough walking to occupy you for several retirements.
If you have a bit more of an intrepid leaning and want to indulge your love of sailing – or take it up, even – there are lots of maritime towns to choose from that offer the benefit of a thriving year-round community. Dartmouth in Devon, for example, is gaining a reputation as a foodie destination, and Burnham has a popular marina from where you can set sail under Norfolk’s big skies. Two of literally hundreds of options.
For golfers, it’s possible to pick almost any town that takes your fancy and you can be sure of finding a number of great courses close by. And you will have great amenities on hand for when you’ve finished polishing your handicap.
Surfing at Newquay. Running a bridge club in Lavenham. Amateur dramatics in Hay-on-Wye. However action-packed you want your future to be and wherever you are thinking of moving, there are all kinds of towns to consider.
Of course, the first task is to get the local low-down. Here in Bristol, we know about everything from the kind of activities on offer to tracking down your perfect property.
