The stop was part of the aircraft’s promotional Asia-Pacific tour last November, which saw it visit Changi Airport in Singapore, followed by Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne airports in Australia and Kuala Lumpur Airport in Malaysia. Bearing the distinctive Qantas livery, the aircraft also proved to be the centre of attention at the airline’s 85th birthday celebrations in Brisbane. Attracting plenty of media interest, the tour by the world’s largest passenger plane also provided a chance for a series of successful airport compatibility tests. Air BP’s role at Brisbane was to supply 90,000 litres of fuel, plus turbine oil – BP2197 – for the onward flight to Sydney. Brisbane operations manager Grant Seagg carried out the refueling following training and security checks by the A380 operations team. He said that although the refueling was carried out in a secure area, airport workers converged from all corners of the airport to witness the operation and admire the latest Airbus. When interviewed Grant said “Brisbane Airport is already set up for the arrival of large aircrafts, except for the parking bays which are too small to accommodate the large Airbus. As a result, an area on the stand-off areas was marked out for the aircraft to park” . He added “We also located the refueling points and wing heights in order to verify which hydrant to trial in the refueling” . In the event, the aircraft was fuelled with the state-of- the-art electric hydrant dispenser HD 6733. The smoothness of the operation was helped by an English speaking engineer from Airbus who translated the pressures and flow rates used in the process. The refueling operation took only 35 minutes, compared to more than an hour required to fill up a Boeing 747. Once charged, the Sydney bound aircraft took off with celebrity passengers, US actor John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston on board for a flight over Australia’s Gold Coast. The actor and aircraft enthusiast, who owns a fleet of private jets, is an ambassador for Qantas. Said Grant: “The important factor learned from this operation was that all new generation aircraft have similar refueling systems. Air BP did receive great exposure during the first refueling of the A380 and we are looking forward to servicing more of these aircraft as Qantas expands its Airbus fleet” .

KiribatiFollowing a review of the operation in Kiribati (IATA Code:TRW) it has been decided to progress to a closure of ouroperations in Kiribati at both Bonriki & Betio by the 31st August2006. It is expected that supply tocustomers will cease on the 30th June 2006, with thefollowing period until closure necessary to facilitate site worksas part of the exit requirements. Allan Jones has clocked up 25 yearswith BP. We managed to get him toanswer a few questions about hisjourney in BP.If you've worked at BP for 25 years, that must mean first job was in 1981– what was that first job?My first job was as a BitumenChemist…..and in case you’rewondering I didn't work for Tim Indbut he did follow me to Air BPeventually! What other areas within BP have youworked?Mostly Air BP but also worked for asignificant number of years as aMarketing Chemist and inDistributors with the PetroLinksystem. Can you share some careerhighlights?1. An Air BP inspection to an airportin Arctic Circle where the hotel had alarge indoor pool complete with PalmTrees, a water slide and swim up bar. 2. Sitting in the "jump seat" of a B717from takeoff to landing.3. Working with exceptionally friendlypeople in our industry.Who are some famous people youmet along the way?I shared afternoon tea with GeorgeSpeight, he was looking at starting anairline business. When that failed hewent on to lead a coup d'etat of theFiji Government. Just goes to showhard it is start an airline! What is your history within Air BP…Lucky enough to have worked in allareas except accounting functions. What are the plans for your next 25years?Avoid working in accounting!

One of the most interesting thingshas been watching start up airlinesgrow from a thought to a bona fidebusiness. Not many last the distancebut the enthusiasm, capacity forwork and optimism of people likeEwan Wilson (Kiwi), Gerry McGowan(Impulse), Richard Branson (Virgin)and Paul Stoddart (OzJet) neverceases to amaze me.
