“Airsoft and Beyond”

s we release this “Femme Fatale” issue, airsoft as we used to know it will no longer exist. The so called, “grace period” will have expired and all airsoft guns, players and shops in the Philippine Islands will come out of its underground status and move into the mainstream. Generally speaking, the entire airsoft community will have mixed emotions. As I write this, some players and dealers have already

flocked to the PNP Firearms and Explosives Division to comply. Unfortunately, a great majority have not and opted instead to sell what remained of their modest armories and have gone on to other hobbies which do not require a gun or camouflage fatigues.

This particular issue will be an historic one as this will be the first time that airsoft will be openly embraced by the firearms community and the very first time that airsoft will be recognized as a legitimate industry. This is also the very first time that an airsoft publication throws its full support to the Defense and Sporting Arms Show organized by the Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers of the Philippines Inc.(AFAD)

Truly, this is another milestone for the most popular airsoft magazine in the world. A feat no other Filipino publication has achieved. Airsoft Xtreme thanks the Philippine National Police through its maverick chief, Gen. Avelino Razon, Jr., PNP-FED officials and the AFAD through its president, Mr. Neri Dionisio for recognizing the airsoft community and allowing us to keep the game alive.

HELLO AX’s

My name is Rodolfo T. Marfil jr. A Filipino seaman working a Second Deck Officer and a father of two. I was involved in Airsoft just a year ago from a real gun to Airsoft world. I found my self more interested in combat simulation rather than boring target board shooting. Secondly I love reading untiringly your AX MAG’s and get rid of my Playboy Mag’s. The only Airsoft Mag thatyou wont misses it from the first page down to last page. That is why I brought it on board with me always to share it to my fellow mates and I can see in their eyes how interested they are. Some ofthem are already involved. I wish you could spare me some space on your “letters from the front” on your next up coming issue. I will be happy and be more proud to share it across he sea into the whole world. Rodolfo T. Marfil jr.

Dear AX Editors,

My name is Dylan, and I have attached in this email some pictures of my friend Agnes Ronquillo, whom I may consider as the perfect AX Babe.

She’s currently a manager at multinational bank during weekdays and on weekends an avid airsoft weekend warrior. She is quite a fanatic and engages in all extreme requirements of the sport. Do not be deceived by her beauty and and charm, she is tough and an eager gamer, who personifies the perfect AX BABE.

We both started late last year and we are in between teams. We are so addicted to the sport that we are already planning our next game before the week even starts.

Good Luck and More Power AX,

Yours Truly,

Dylan

For our Firing Line article on the AX5, we thought it would be a good idea to do our “live fire” sessions

in one of the best shooting ranges in the Philippines. Just an hour’s drive north of Manila, settled

right smack literally in the middle of nowhere is the Eagle Firing Range at the Clark Economic Zone

in Pampanga—formerly, one of the biggest U.S. military installations in the world, the Clark Air Force

Base.

Whenever we talk about firearms and shooting, safety always becomes part of the conversation.

Every firing range goes through a rigorous safety check. There are a lot of firing ranges in the Philip-

pines and in Metro Manila in particular but there are but a few firing ranges like the Eagle Range. The

range itself lies in the middle of a hundred hectares of a citrus plantation.

This is what makes Eagle Firing Range home to the Philippine Practical Shooting Association where

major shooting matches sanctioned by the International Practical Shooting Confederation have been

held. It is also used by various government and security forces as a training ground for Close-Quarters

Combat using Real Action Markers and “Simunition”, dynamic entry and marksmanship training.

For those who would like to have a taste of cordite, the Eagle Range maintains a wide variety of semi-

automatic pistols, shotguns, carbines and rifles in their modest armory. The friendly staff will make

every effort to keep you safe during sessions and well-maintained facilities make a trip to the range

a most enjoyable experience!

We literally had a blast! Our heartfelt thanks go out to Eagle Range boss, Mr. Rosey Labayog, Mr. Bob

Almario, Neil Adlaon and to the entire range staff. Now we have to sacrifice a few “airsoft weekends”

to play some good old “Rock and Roll”!

As some of your readers will be aware we are holding the charity raffle of the year. We are giving some lucky reader the chance to win a PIPER PRECISION PRODUCTS M134A ver-sion 2 complete with Predator backpack. Why are we doing this i hear you ask?

Well as you can see from our registered Charity page Http://www.bamakobampots.org we are trying to raise a minimum of 30k to provide the people of Mali with their first pair of ambulances fully converted and equiped to cope with the harsh African environment.

We are working with the Rotary International in Mali to ensure that each Ambulance is given to a doctor / nurse team to be used as a roaming field clinic and emergency transport. This way the corrupt personnel that is prevalent in some areas of Africa does not get to syphon off funds or medical aid for their own personal benefit and the aid gets to

the people who need it.

We dont believe in asking for something for nothing so in return for a £5 donation in the form of a raffle ticket we are giving away the monster of a prize. Now this charity raffle isnt one of those buy a ticket for £10 and the draw is out of 10,000 tickets. The Piper raffle tickets are limited to only 4000 and once it is sold out the draw will be made. So it is in everyones best interest to buy one or two and spread the word. Where else can a airsofter get a 1:4000 chance to win a Piper Minigun?

As one customer at the Stirling event said “if i buy four tickets and the chance is 1:1000”

Tickets are onsale right now at our Airsoft website http://www.wearthefoxhat.org,uk

As if the prize was not enough incentive, those that have signed up to our low volume

mailing list will get 1 weeks advanced access to the tickets before they go online to the rest of the airsoft community along with notification of the other raffles like the Centenary Edition Harley Davidson Roadk-ing Classic, 8 kenwood 3207 radios with headsets, 6 way charger, 24 batteries and programming kit as stated on the website we are a non profit registered charity and ALL PROCEEDS go to the Bamako Bam-pots Charity.

Written and Submitted by: SYKES , Team M.A.T.E.

Northern Alliance

Give us a little background on how you came up with the Sykes mask?

Well, I always wanted to be different

even in the way I look and my team knows

how long it always took for me to gear up when I

started airsoft 6 years ago with all of those accessories just to look snappy.

Then I wasn’t satisfied wearing the wire-mesh mask and other protective

masks because of its odd look (not realistic type) and more importantly it’s

bulkiness on the cheek part where you can’t even use your gun sights for

aiming (good luck on scopes and red dot users..not to mention the fogging

of some masks. That’s why I came up with that design for comfort....as what

some players would say...”If Looks Could Kill”. Then came the name of my

mask.....I decided to use SYKES Airsoft Mask because during that time I

was working with that company. I just changed the logo to avoid future prob-

lems like patent issues.

Who inspired you?- When I first saw the movie “Tears of the Sun” where the navy seals

emerged on a near by river as their insertion point with all of their faces

painted....then I said “Man! That was freak’n scary and full of intimidation!”.

That inspired me the most....anyways this is war game simulation, so why not

make it look like its real?

What materials do you use?- That was a challenge for me since I need a material that can withstand high

FPS. Then I stared and noticed that our vehicle bumpers had dents due to

accidental BB shots thinking that I haven’t seen any AEG penetrated vehicle

bumpers and fenders before. Then I said....”Hmmmm....EUREKA!!! That’s it,

FIBERGLASS”

Downfall / mistakes encountered- Too much web marketing....I thought I would only get like a dozen orders.

Then it went up to a hundred with minimum resources...thatswhere you’ll get

compromised....a lot of orders vs few resources. Also, I know when I started

out this mask it will get a lot of criticizms. So I made it as my strong point by

telling my customers to crticize my mask so I can make enhancements to it.

Future enhancements and designs?- Ahhh...yes, a lot of customers do request weird designs when I started mak-

AirsoftXtreme1

Property of A

irsoftX

ternational M

agazine

Page 17: Airsoft Extreme July 2008

ing and marketing my masks. I have selected some which I’ll be including on

this years release. There will be Asian-look , the contractor look, female version

mask and the transparent type. I’ll also try to come up with other materials

which can endure high FPS just to make the inside part of my masks smooth.

Strength and durability?- Currently, my mask can withstand 550+FPS single shot at close range with no

penetration. As per my SPYDER saftey goggles that comes with it, it can with

stand the same velocity single shot at close range with no penetration....just a

minor dimple on the lens.

Are you planning to market it globally?- Well, I already started in the international market like U.S. and Canada.

Thanks to my dealer there (Ma’am Alee) “Cactus” for distributing my masks.

For the US and Canada orders you may visit www.cactushobbies.com. Just

recently, other countries found interest in our proudly Philippine-made Sykes

mask like Europe, Japan, Dubai, Guam and Hong Kong as you can see in

pictures on filairsoft.com. I also have dealers nationwide that caters to airsofters

needs locally for my masks.

Tell us about your team- I am known by the vets by my old call sign (Sand-Viper) during my SPECWAR times,

now I am known by most as SYKES. May be its because that’s the company that I worked

with. I’m also the founding Chairman of our Airsoft Club in our company (SYKES Airsoft

Tactical Team) or S.A.T.T. nationwide. I’ve been playing airsoft for nearly 6 years now with

my cousin, Dermonic and Edward as my oroginal squad. We were part of the SPECWAR

team at the time and was trained at MMTC game site (now a major mall in Q.C.). Right

now, I’m affiliated with team M.A.T.E. which stands for Masked Airsofters Tactical Elites

(may be because all of our members are wearing my SYKES mask). We’re under the

BIG umbrella of the prestigious Northern Alliance group which is headed by Papa Jun

Guillermo and we’re also a member of his QRT elites (Quick Response Team) since our

team is known for our stealthy, flanking knife kills like ghosts in the forest.

Availability of your product?- My masks are available in 5 colors: Tan, OD Green, Black (for SWAT load

ups), Tiger Stripes (for jungle and Snipers) and Camo. The package come

with the SYKES mask (with the color of your choice), safety goggles and

balaclava (for facial skin protection). For US and Canada buyers, please

visit us at www.cactushobbies.com and for other countries and local que-

ries, you can call or text me at (+63 915 9874404) for faster transaction.

Parting words to our beloved comrades.- I would like to thank my supporters for believing in the ingenuity of our

Philippine product. Special thanks to my local and international dealers

and most especially to my FAMILY and my team namely ALMO (Butch),

VIPER (Edward), TODD (Noli), BULLET (Ar-

chie), Rannie, TRIGGER(Joel), SAND-

MAN (Rodel), PYTHON (Ronnie),

DERMONIC (Derick), SHADOW

(Mike), SYLVY, MALDITA (Tin),

LATINO, PSYCHO, ALVIN,

SPAWN (Crisanto). I also would

like to thank ART Fiber Glass

works and his mask makers

formaking this possible. To my

loyal customers, please watch

out for my new products and

designs this year!!!

AirsoftXtreme 1

How long have you been

playing airsoft?I started in june 2007. I had a passion for guns from the start, so I’ve been playing for a year now. I needed an outlet to relieve my stress at work, since my job is very demanding and competitive in nature.

What’s this Team Bagnet all about? Team Bagnet is about a group of yuppies (that’s me), businessmen, managers, barangay captains and councilors who decided to get together and play the game to relieve the pressure of their everyday stressful lives!hahaha

Any designations to your team?I’m usually just all about assault because i prefer CQB games. it’s

so much more intense.

The type of game you usualy play? It depends upon the gamesite, but most often speedball because the team loves the extreme adrenaline rush of speedball.

Does being a woman have disadvantages in this type of a man’s sport?Personally the only disavantage for me is the stamina compared to my teammates. My body can only take so much! haha. But put me anywhere. I dont complain.

Your favorite weapon and why?I’ve been through many weapons. the mp5, g36, s-system, and

then I found my soulmate, the g&p “zombie killer”. I prefer it because it’s light weight, compact and the magazine capacity

is better vs the mp5’s.

What are you outside airsoft?Aside from airsofting, when I’m not “dressed to kill”, I’m in heels, and a manager for

a corpo-ration called LGC, which

exclusively dis-tributes consumer

products. I basically sell, promote, design modules and use my charm and talent to distribute these products to all

key accounts, which include small and medium supermarkets. my area is ilocos norte, ilocos sur and abra. on a normal day I’m usually inside supermarkets checking that everyday people get their personal care needs.

Any parting words to all our female comrades who would also like to play the sport. I’m a girly girl in a mans sport, but it goes to show that us girls can do anything we put our mind too. It doesn’t matter what the circumstances are, if I can do it, you can do it too. nothing beats the adrenaline rush of airsoft. - AX Exclusive

always wondered where they hid these things. I mean, where exactly do you put an under-ground complex housing 150-ft tall missiles tipped with thermo-

nuclear warheads? After driving five-and-a-half hours Northeast of Portland, OR, I got that question answered: in the middle of nowhere.

Amidst seemingly endless rolling hills of high-desert scrub lays the remnants of the Larson Air Force Base Titan 1A ICBM Facility. Larson AFB was once part of Strategic Air Command’s 568th Strategic Missile Squadron. In 1965 the mighty Ti-tans of the 568th squadron were taken off operational alert and shipped to Nor-ton AFB, California for disposal. In June of 1966 the last man out sealed the hatch behind him and the base was closed.

IRecently the property has become a pop culture icon resulting from the nu-merous listings on eBay. The current owner has begun renting out pieces of the complex. A trio of enterprising event promoters saw this opportunity and wheels started turning. Steve “Ter-ror Management” Towns, Scott “Pain-less” Griffin and Mike “Chickenhawk” Smith all of Titan1 Tactical have come together to bring us “WARGAMES”, a scenario based airsoft battle like the world has ever seen.

The “American” teams’ job was simple enough; infiltrate a hardened facility held by ter-rorists armed with auto-matic weapons in order to save the world.

The “terrorists” had seized the facility and needed to locate the launch codes for the missiles...

When you arrived on site you could see a shallow depres-sion in the earth hiding the 85-ton blast doors covering the silos. A massive concrete and steel hatch allowed ac-cess underground. The hatch was propped open and led to a narrow graffiti-ridden staircase spiraling down an equipment elevator. The staircase opened into a long chamber where the game would take place.

The walls were painted in various shades of institution-al-cold-war beige, orange, and green. The graffiti was so thick, it was difficult to find a square foot of wall space that didn’t have something like “Mary Jane Class of ‘84” on it. Sounds carried down the cor-ridors and echoed from every direction making it nearly im-possible to make a movement without sounding like you were stumbling drunk.

The longest of the corridors had a few plywood barri-ers bolted in place to provide

cover. It was several hundred feet long and ended at an antenna silo. A thick steel blast door led into the silo. Once inside, the cylindrical room was about eighty feet deep with some impressively large doors overhead. The lift still hung from thick steel cables in the center of the room, long devoid of any an-

tennae. It was suspended above a deep pit littered with forty years of dust and debris. Opposite the long corridor was one of the missile si-los. It was simply a huge blast door on the side of the hallway. The door was askew on its massive hinges and likely never to open enough to

even peek inside. The passageway beyond was roped off preventing us from falling through the missing floor panels.

The 125-ft tall dome that housed the power station was out of play. The control dome opposite the pow-er dome was in play. It was about 100-ft high and split into two levels. A single staircase provided access to the second level that housed a single room and a broken latrine.

The overall field of play was a large “X” shaped intersection with the control dome and power dome on opposite ends and the antenna and missile silos opposite of them on the other leg. There were two pieces of plywood in a “T” shape placed in the center of the inter-section.

Once all of the players had chrono’d and toured the facility for good understanding of where we were allowed to go, we ascended to the surface for our final briefing. Steve broke us into two groups;

“Americans” and “Terrorists”. The “terrorists” had seized the facility and needed to locate the launch codes for the missiles. Once found, the missiles would begin fueling and the opposing forces would have only a matter of minutes to intercept and end the launch sequence to save the world form an imminent nuclear holocaust. eventsSixty people had come out for the game. The “Americans” got red armbands and the “terrorists” went down into the bunker to dig in. I was one of the bad guys for this one, so I went down and got ready for some fast-paced action. The game play was exactly that: intense. Admins positioned some of our forces right on top of the no-fire zone surrounding the staircase. This meant that the “Americans” were going to take (heavy) casual-ties right from the get-go. We did not disappoint. As “Game on!” was called the blender switched on and plastic started to fly.

I played for about 90 min-utes underground. I never made it more

than a hundred feet from the center of the hallway. There were endless assaults mounted by both sides. The “Americans” would stack-up and try to roll on one of the three available corridors and take fire from every direction. Bodies piled in the center of the maelstrom with intermittent cries for “Medic!” being heard over the din of battle. As the in- filtrating forces

tried to g a i n

entry and establish a foothold in the facility the “terrorists” would throw ourselves to certain plas-tic-doom to keep them at bay. Our objectives called for us to locate launch codes, so one of the brave members of the Professional Air-soft Contractors organized an assault to the control dome to re-trieve the codes. Under a fusillade of plastic that was unreal, he made it to the control dome and returned with the codes. We began fueling the missiles and the “Americans” began pushing harder. After more than 30 minutes of epic battling I was told by an admin to continue the fight topside.

Ascending the stairs I was instruct-ed to repel the “Americans” from sabotaging the missile silo doors to prevent launch. The fight sud-denly took on a new flavor trying to move through desert scrub and sagebrush to reach the objective with very little cover and a steady wind blowing. The game carried on for another 90 minutes with small groups of people maneuver-ing on one another and eventually the one with the best range won.

I never made it back down in the silo. I heard from both teams that “we won”. That tells me that eve-ryone had a good time. Seeing the tired and smiling faces gath-ered around for the raffle after the game confirmed that fact. I had a blast. The location was incredible and the teams that came out to play were great.

I would like to extend a special thank you to both Steve and Scott for making this event happen and

providing Airsoft Pacific the op-portunity to cover the event. You can find more photos and vid-

eo from the event at www.airsoftpacific.com.

he rising popularity of airsoft has paved the way for the Guns and Hobbies Fair--a showcase of the latest

in the airsoft industry and a sample of things to come in the airsoft world.

The fair owes its success to the enthusiasts and future airsofters who flocked to the venue and checked out the guns and gear plus the dynamic firing range set-up.

Some of the fair’s participants included active Philippine National Police officers, active Armed Forces of the Phil-ippines personnel, airsofters and wannabee players.

inally my order arrived last week. A brand new spankin TM Detonics 45 Combat

Master. Packaging was almost similar with the TM M1911A1. Magazine has a chrome finish however does not depict the real steel counterpart which is made of matte stainless finish. The grip panels are similar of the TM M1911A1 variant and the rear grip is parkerized.

Seams are almost non-existent same as the TM 1911A1 and I would assume for the TM 1911A1 owners, they would appreciate the finish of this gas blow back(GBB). Metal parts are the lower receiver, hammer, trigger, mag release, slide lock.

One thing you will notice instantly is the location of its rear sights is set oddly for-ward, reducing the sight radius to a bare 4 inches. However the the combat master was not really intended as a target pistol (real steel) so I guess being a replica, it is but logical to follow the original design.

MarkingsThe markings on the slide is just the plain Detonics .45 on the left

and the typical “ASGK” “Tokyo Marui, Made in Japan”. Not much really.

Picking this GBB is quite surprising as it is a tad heavier than my TM 5.1 Hi-capa without the magazine. can’t recall the exact weight of the Detonics but it really has a very nice balance.

InternalsThe TM Detonics utilizes a piston cup instead of the typical rubber o-ring. This according to TM increases the “blowback” effect of this dimu-nitive GBB (which I proven

o t h -e r w i s e , s i m i l a r only to a TM G26 Advance

which uses also a piston cup). Not sure why this was advertise but probably it was just an assump-tion.

The rest is pretty much similar to the TM M1911A1, hop adjustment is also located inside the slide near the recoil spring. Slide take down of this GBB is similar to any 1911 variant.

PerformanceLoaded my two mags with bb’s (18 bb’s/mag) and gas (hfc 134a).

Target is laid outdoors having the following conditions (guesstimate) slight breeze, around 25 - 28 de-grees. Adjusted the hop a bit be-

cause I was using .25 bb’s (ran out of .2 )

RangeStarted shooting from a distance of 20 feet (see

target paper on the left). First 4 shots yielded a group-

ing of less than an inch apart which pretty

good. The hole on the outermost area of the tar-

get was a way-ward shot (was eager

to do a double tap hehehe)

Moved back a bit around 25-30 feet, the result is the paper on the right. Significant difference in the groupings, about an inch to an in-

chd and a half apart with some ob-vious (out target results). Not quite bad considering the length of its barrel which is around 3.2?.

Maximum effective range I reckon is around 40-50 feet, really depend-ing on the wind conditions. Though if you get to the sights and grip,

potentially results would be much better. Also tested shooting around 2 magfulls off bb’s (around 38 bb’s) using only 1 charge of HFC134a gas. Seems quite adequate for a small mag capacity.

CONCLUSION

Overall, I would recommend this pistol for those 1911 variant lovers and collectors. It can also serve as a good backup weapon in a pistol fight. Backup weapon on the field, well that depends on how confidend and com-fortable you are, for me it does not present any issues.

JG HK 416 V.2 Review

B asically, the HK416 is an improvement over the famous American M4/ M16 by using a

proprietary gas system derived from the HK G36, replacing the direct impingement gas system used by the standard M4/M16. This results in a more reliable and less maintenance by the reduction in heat and fouling of the bolt and also creating less stress for important compo-nents. It was initially made as a drop in kit for existing AR based weapons, though eventually HK mad it a standalone. It has a free float forend equipped all four sides with MIL-STD Picatinny rails. It uses HK based front and rear sights, is compatible with STANAG M4/M16 based magazines, as well as most parts made for the AR variants.

WHAT’S INSIDE THE BOX

THE STOCK CHEEK REST

The rifle came with a plain brown paper box with a simple label “G22” on it, nothing fancy. Upon opening the box, you will find the ff:The upper receiver , the stock, one magazine, 3 Allen wrenches of 2mm, 4mm and 5mm, A small Phillip’s screw driver, bb loader,Pack of bbs, A rifle sling (consider the weight of the ri-fle and the material of the sling, A single sheet of user manual with zero referencing value.

The stock is made of plastic, ABS I think, which is strong and no flex de-tected, and the sling point and the bi-pod attachment block are all made of metal, and are embedded in the stock. The grip is contoured and fits comforta-bly, but the palm rest is NOT adjustable.

The cheek rest is rather simple but adjust-able. The butt plate is made of rubber and contoured with an armpit hook, also the pump-action cocking parts were not there

I think there are two things about this G22 by Well that catch peo-ples attention, first, this is the first gas powered rifle from China and, second, the cool-looking stock. Lets start from the beginning.

his rifle is not based on any particular model, and has nothing to do with the G22 sniper rifle adopted by the German Army. So there is nothing to talk about in this aspect.

THE RECIEVER AND THE BARREL ASSEMBLY

GUN ASSEMBLY

The locations of the two Allen screws. Near the Trigger.

Apart from o-rings, some odd bits AND the TRIG-GER BOX, the entire upper assembly is made of metal. Judging from the weight, feel, texture and sound (I tapped it ), the upper assembly is not made of pot-metal, but as I like to say, it is not made of steel either. So don’t think of hitting it with a hammer!!The whole upper assembly, with the excep-tion of the cylinder assembly, is almost identical to that of an AWP, the spring powered rifle made by Well, but they are not fully interchangeable

The locations of the two Allen screws. Near the sniper magazine

The relative position of the receiv-er and the stock AFTER tightening the screws

IMPRESSIONI paid considerable less than what it will costs in US for this G22 in where I live, considering the material used, and the look of the rifle. The grip feels so good, the adjustable cheek rest earns a lot of points. The ergonomics of this stock coupled with a long bolt handle reduce the strain on the wrist considerably. I own some M700 style spring powered rifle, they all gave me a sore wrist after 50 or so shots, but not this G22 (or AWP in this matter). Also from what I heard, the assembly of the gas cylinder in Well’s factory left a lot to desire. A set of replacement o-ring is handy, if not necessary. If

you think this is a gas rifle and it is easier to pull the handle, compare to that of a springer, then you are wrong. The force needed to pull the handle is comparable to any other springer that I

own, but the stroke is considerably shorter, about halve that of a springer.

If you ask me to choose between an AWP and a G22 in stock’s form, I can’t make the choice. Both shoot great, both are comfortable to shoot, and weight about the same. I would say for target practice in my backyard, I choose the G22, it looks a lot ‘de-militarized’ and the grip feels better.

he CXP .08 is ICS’s latest weapon based off of their split gearbox M4 platform. This gun is expected to be

released to distributors in about a month. This review is based off of the last run of pre-production models

and therefore should reflect the final product. The CXP .08 is ICS’s first M4 model that is not a replica of a real firearm. While based on the M4 platform, the CXP .08 features a custom ICS designed front end and stock. The design of this gun has been patented by ICS which insures you will be getting a unique gun.

BASIC INFORMATIONThis review is not based on the retail product, it is a pre-produc-tion model donated by ICS for this review. Therefore, no retail packaging was provided for the review. At this time, the retail packaging is expected to consist of: 2 Highcap mags, 1000 BB’s, and a Catalog/Instructions CD. Price is expected to be close to the CQB models (approximately $300).

FIRST IMPRESSIONThe CXP.08 is the second overall shortest model in the ICS M4 line up, second only to the M4 pistol. Externally it features an ICS designed collapsible stock and a short (pistol length) front end. The front end is high quality ABS and aluminum, and the receiver and stock are both full metal.

EXTERNALSThe pistol grip on this gun is your standard ICS M4 type grip with a twist. It uses a new method for adjusting the motor height.

T

It has a large, thin, flat head adjustment screw and then second flat head screw that goes on top to function as a set screw of sorts. The stock is a newly designed stock most similar to a MP5/G3 style collapsible stock. It is a full metal stock with 6 positions and a plastic butt piece. Unlike the ICS folding stock, this gun still uses a standard ICS stock adapter. The sights on this gun are integrated into the upper rail system and are very similar to HK style M4/416 sights.

The rear sight has adjustment knobs for elevation and windage. The fore grip itself is similar to a shortened SPR tube front end. It is a sturdy ABS construction with metal rails on all four sides.

INTERNALSThe inner barrel on this gun is a standard ICS M4 Pistol barrel. The hopup on this gun is a standard ICS M4 hopup that is ac-cessed by pulling back the charging handle. The adjustment dial rotates up and down to adjust the hopup. Gearbox wise, this is a standard ICS M4. That means it has a Turbo 3000 motor and is compatible with 99% of the after market internal parts around. The only exceptions being the gearbox casing and the anti-re-versal latch. The wiring is nice and flexible, yet well shielded. The fuse has quick disconnect plugs to allow for quick fuse swaps.

PERFORMANCEFunction wise, this gun functions like a standard M4. With the pistol length barrel, this gun is most suited for CQB fields or as a sidearm/backup weapon. The gun was chrono’d at 290-305fps using .23g Airsoft Elite BB’s. That translates to 310-326fps us-ing .20 BB’s. That is right on par for a 100 spring with that short of a barrel.

CONCLUSIONThis gun appears to be a very sol-id addition to the ICS M4 family.

The collapsible stock makes for a very dis-

tinctive weapon and is very functional.

It features 6 positions and locks very securely into each posi-tion with no wobble at all. The more you play with it, the more it grows on your. The gun features plenty of rails for mounting what ever accessories you may choose. The gun also features a sling mount integrated into the stock tube and is especially suited for a 1pt sling.

All in all this is a very solid gun and one of the most unique M4 based guns available. Hopefully we will see ICS continue to

make innovative additions to their M4 product lineup. How-ever, this gun is not meant for everyone. If you are looking for a gun with enough range and accuracy for woodland style games, you might want to consider a standard M4 model.

The FN FAL is one of the most famous and widespread military rifle designs in the World. It was used by some 70 or even more countries, and was man-ufactured in at least 10 countries. The constructions of this AEG are consisted of aluminum alloy and steel alloy for added realism. Each King Arms FAL will also have individual serial number on the metal body for uniqueness. The lengthy barrel with selective fire made this gun a great choice of semi-auto sniper rifle or squad support weapon. The internal gearbox style is your tradi-tional version 3 gearbox with 6mm metal bushings installed. It is fully compat-ible with most version 3 gearbox internal upgrade parts out in the market.

WORDS AND REVIEW BY : KRUSTY, Airsoft Canada

FIRST IMPRESSION

When you first open the box and hold the KA FAL in your arms you realise that this is a long rifle at 103cm. The

AEG comes in all steel with the ex-ception of the Hand guards, Stock, Pistol Grip. These items are made from tough ABS plastic not some cheap dollar store crap. For you old CF guys that used the FN then this is your AEG. It feels very sold.

As stated above each rifle comes with an individual serial number which is a nice touch. The rifle does not say anywhere that it’s a King Arms Rifle except on the bot-

tom of the magazines. It simple states Gew. Kal. 7.62mm GI and the serial number like the real Belgium made FAL. Here is a picture of mine.

OPERATION

In the picture we can also see the selector which is really sol-id with a nice CLICK when you proceed through the settings. In the picture below we see the operating lever which you will have to screw on the operating level handle. Once the Operating handle is firmly in place you can open the bolt to access the hop up mechanism. I was surprised that there is a nice amount of spring tension very similar to the ICS AK74M Bolt tension.

The battery compartment is huge and an 8.4 3600 which I used to test the rifle slides in easily. The battery compartment in the stock

has an outer rubber protector and a plastic cover used to secure the battery. I was disappointed that the rubber recoil pad included that slides over the

end of the stock comes off to easily in the field. When I was walking around during Operation Bor-der War it came off a couple of times.

To solve this problem I purchased the rifle butt aid from CP Gear. Here is the link: http://www.cpgear.com/default.asp?mn=1.19.56&f=pd&pid=27. Once on it has solves the problem and it’s very nice and you can place some nice maps or radio codes

depending on your game play in there.

King Arms does provide a nice loading tool for loading BB into the all steel magazines. The stand-ard mags hold 90 round. I have not used the 500+ mag so I cannot comment on these. I purchased extra mags from the www.thewarstore.org. The

magazines are not relly expensive and you can im-port them without issues from the CBSA. You will

bring the venerable FAL into the 21st Century. This rail system gives the FAL the ability to take all the accessories that have become necessary for mod-

ern combat such as flashlights, lasers, optics, etc. Since the kit is made by King Arms it is com-pletely compatible and installs quickly with the included tools.

TAKEDOWN

I will not go into detail about the removal of the mech box but will say that the instruc-

tions which are in English are very basic. King Arms does not provide any details about getting into the rifle internally. Let’s say it was difficult and should only be done by someone experience with AEG repair.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion I would recom mend this rifle for the more seasoned Airsoft. If you look-ing for a nice AEG for sniping this might be for you. Overall 9.5 out of 10.

notice that when you try to insert the magazines into the AEG that they are tight. I have six mags and they were all tight fitting. I was told by some team mates that they do loosen up over time.

Above is a picture of the rear sight looking forward from the stock. The rear sight is fully adjustable and very sold. The front sight is also adjustable and King Arms has provided the ad-justment tool for you.

FIRING

Since King Arms has pre-upgraded the rifle I was un-sure on how it would sound or shoot. Using an 8.4 3600 battery it fired extremely fast and with a minor adjustment on the hop up very accu-rate. I was very pleased. There was no evidence of selector slipping or anything else wrong that I could tell. When I Chronied the AEG using Mauri 0.20 BB is was firing approx 340 fps. I fired approx 180 rounds with no problems in semi or full auto.

ACCESSORIES AND UPGRADES

I did purchase a Guarder 110% spring which hopefully produces a 390 to 400 fps using 0.20. I also bought a basic padded nylon sling off eBay for using in the bush for ease of carrying. The traditional C1A1 or L1A1 FA: sling will not work due to the connectors so don’t waist you money buying military surplus. GNG SCAR LDESERT VERSION

pon assessment of my inventory of M16 family airsoft guns

during the early days of summer, 2008, I realized that I

needed a new weapon system to play as replacement. My

requirements were: the gun should be modern in design,

should have at least the range of an M4A1, should be lightweight,

should have a folding or retractable stock, and should accept M16

magazines.

I did an extensive research over the internet for new available airsoft

weapon systems and was hooked with the HK 416 as various airsoft

manufacturers released their versions almost simultaneously.

I was about to get one when I saw the G&G SCAR

L Desert Version on the first page of Airsoft

Xtreme Iron Maidens issue. I fell in

love and immediately called Air-

soft Armory if they have the model

in stock and fortunately, they have

one.

THE BOX

The gun came in a vibrantly printed black

colored box with its features and specifications written all

over. Upon opening the box, the view of G&G SCAR L with

its serious looking desert scheme filled my eyes. It

came with a bipod foregrip, a tan-color- e d

GNG SCAR LDESERT VERSION

DETAILS OF THE GUN

The G&G SCAR L design was based from the 3rd

Generation real steel SCAR L made by FNH USA.

The gun looked heavy with all its sophistication at

first sight but I was impressed by its incredibly light

weight upon handling. It was lighter than my G&P

M733, with a very good weight distribution, and

feels very solid. There are no wobbles,

no creaks, and all manual controls and

moving parts lock into place with a posi-

tive click. The gun was designed to accept

standard M16 airsoft magazines. I have

tried fitting a Tokyo Marui 300-round hicap

mag and a G&P 140-round midcap mag

with positive results.

The long upper receiver is CNC milled

from a solid block of magnesium that ex-

tends from just behind the front sight to the

rear sight placement. It has a durable tan

finish that looks a little shinny and grainy

giving it a mild bronze-like appearance.

Laser etched markings on the left side

reads “G&G Armament G2008 EX16

MOD 0 Cal. 5.56mm” with a unique serial

number. The top of the upper receiver is

an uninterrupted picatinny rail for mount-

ing optics. On the sides are two short

rails, and on the bottom of the foregrip

is another rail. Visible on the first 2/3 por-

tion of the upper receiver is the movable

dummy bolt/bolt carrier assembly. The

charging handle is located on the left side

of the gun but can be transferred to the

right for left-handed shooters. Pulling the

charging handle back reveals the hop-up

adjustment mechanism.

The lower receiver is made from dura-

ble polymer with a dark earth finish. Magazine

release buttons and fire selector switch are am-

bidextrous. Attached to the lower receiver is a

working modified M16 type bolt catch. Pressing

the lower part of the bolt catch while pulling back

on the charging handle locks the bolt assembly

into open position making hop-up adjustments

convenient. Upon release of the bolt, it makes a

hollow sounding tin can clink rather that a solid

sound. Also connected to the lower receiver is

the G&G reinforced M4-type pistol grip which

houses the motor. It is covered with a motor

heatsink plate at the bottom.

The stock module of the G&G SCAR L is both

folding and retractable. It is made also from the

same polymer material with similar color scheme

as with the lower receiver. The stock can be fold-

ed to the right side just like the G36 and locks

onto the metal shell deflector. The retract-

able portion serves as battery housing and

has room enough only for a mini type or lith-

ium polymer battery. It can be moved to six

half-inch positions. The rear end of the stock

covered from with a rubber buttpad. A neat

addition to the design of the stock is an incor-

porated adjustable cheekpiece which can be

moved into three vertical positions. No wires

run from the stock going to the gearbox. The

electrical wires from the stock end at contact

plates on the stock hook plate assembly. The

retractable part of the stock glides over two

gold-plated conductor rods effectively cutting

the connection when the stock is pulled out

for battery installation/removal.

The gun also sports a black anodized one-

piece metal outer barrel. At the forward end

of the barrel is a steel birdcage flash hider.

The metal sights of the gun (front and rear

sights) are both folding and adjustable for

windage and elevation. The rear sight is rail

mounted on the upper receiver while the

front sight sits on the meticulously replicated

gray-colored gas block. G&G put an extra

eye on details by making a realistic mov-

able gas regulator attached to the gas block.

It can be switched to normal fire and sup-

pressed fire modes.

GOING IN

Access to the gun’s internals is uncomplicat-

ed. Removing one screw on the stock hook

plate assembly and one captivated receiver

pin will separate the upper and lower receiv-

ers exposing gearbox. From there, removing

the small parts is much similar on M16 based

airsoft guns only with slight difference due

to ambidextrous weapon controls. Electrical

contact plates between the two receivers

are also effectively broken when the lower

receiver is removed making accidental firing

impossible.

Upon opening the gun, the clear plastic

hop-up assembly caught my attention. Its

clear make-up allows you to see the green

hop packing which, according to a literature

written on the box, is made from a new ma-

terial for low temperatures operation. The

gun comes pre-upgraded with a precision

6.04mm brass inner barrel. The motor have

no markings but its dimensions are similar to

the TM EG1000 motor.

The SCAR L’s gearbox is Version 2. All gear-

box screws are hexagonal and positioned

on the left side unlike the familiar right sided

screw configuration of most AEG gearbox.

Visible also on the left side is a polycar-

bonate selector plate with a wide surface

area.

Opening the gearbox is like opening a birth-

day present. Quality G&G internal parts are

at the center of the package. The gears

are G&G second edition gears reinforced

to 30% strength. The gearbox comes with

7mm metal bearing bushings except for

the spur gear bushings which is made of

copper. The tappet plate and the piston as-

sembly are also polycarbonate. The piston

head is already ported with a unique helical

cut and is already provided with bearings.

The metal spring guide also comes with

bearings. The anti-reverse latch is thickly

reinforced. This is a welcome addition for

worry-free future heavy spring upgrades.

The cylinder is made of brass with the hole

situated at the middle. This is contradictory

to the usual location of the cylinder holes

for other airsoft guns with M4 barrel length.

The gun comes with a stock M100 equivalent

spring tension.

Another notable thing about the G&G design is

the absence of an electrical cut-off system with-

in the gearbox. The selector plate doesn’t have

any contact plates and have nothing to do with

the electrical system of the trigger mechanism

assembly. The only thing it does, when the gun

is in safe, is to prevent the trigger from being

depressed (mechanical safety).

PERFORMANCE

The gun clocked at 360fps using 0.2g bb’s out

of the box. Rate of fire using an 11.1V 1600mAh

LiPoly battery is tremendously fast (at par with

TM M4 using the same battery voltage). Both

accuracy and range are very good owing to the

carbine length precision inner barrel.

UPGRADABILITY

Upgrading the G&G SCAR L with higher ten-

sion springs will be unproblematic in terms of

the durability of the internal parts. A big issue

however, is the battery size since the retractable

Captivated receiver pin and plastic hop-up assembly

stock can only accommodate small batteries. This problem can nonetheless be

addressed by using lithium polymer batteries.

DECIDE

TO

SURVIVE!

In CoUntRY

In one of the untold stories of the countless operations to ter-minate the notorious Abu Sayyaf Group in the jungles of Jolo and

Basilan by members of the Naval Special Warfare Group (SWAG), a machine gunner was separated from his four-man fire team after maneuvering, following a close and brief firefight in one of the hills in the area.

Next thing he knew, he was al-ready surrounded by some 20 ban-dits with dagger looks who pointed their long and high powered guns at him. He could do nothing but yield and submit himself or be killed.

The SN1 (the equivalent of an Army corporal), bare-ly 25 years old, burly, and 5’10” tall, was now a prisoner of war (POW) who faced sure death. His captors immediately recognized his tiger-stripe camouflage uniform. He was a SWAG. And eve-ry member of this elite AFP unit had a bounty on his head based on the Abu Sayyaf reward system.

They took away all his belongings, including his M-60 machinegun and lots of ammunition, before they began their trek to the ASG hideout in the jungle.

The canopy overhead was so dark that even at 1000H on a clear morning, it was still dark. The man-grove forest where he was captured was so dense that one cannot see anything else 10 feet away. He was ordered to carry his links of ammunition while

his captors took turns carrying the M-60. Realizing the firearm was heavier, the ASG took the ammunition from him and ordered him to carry the machine gun.

Throughout, he remained alert, his mind at work on his escape plan. He was only wait-ing for the most opportune time to execute it. Foremost, he was determined to bring his very own M-60 with him in his es-cape so that the enemy cannot use it. Part of his plan was to hide it along his route since the weight of the gun will slow him down. Besides, it was of no use at that moment because he had no ammo.

Meanwhile, his fellow fire team members were already reunited with the other four-man fire team. Together with other operating units, they stepped up, but this time for a more daunting task: the rescue of one of their members. Six hours into his ordeal, and as he and his captors passed through the rugged and cov-ered terrain where every ravine and mountain

top was a potential hideout, two UH-1H Hueys thun-dered over their exact location. The bandits scram-bled to seek cover. Finally, luck was on the SN1’s side.

This was his moment to escape. He dashed for his freedom, following his plan using the escape and evasion skills he acquired from his training.

Familiar with the terrain, he ran towards the sea

where their R.H.I.B. (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) was positioned. He passed through a mangrove where he hid his machine gun, marking the exact location.

With all the strength left in him, he swam for more than a mile towards the R.H.I.B. Using his signaling and navi-gational skills, he was located and eventually rescued by his teammates four hours after his daring escape. The reunited eight-man SWAG team went back to run after the enemy. Our gritty SN1 also retrieved his M-60 machinegun.

His determination, trust in his own instincts, and us-ing the skills he learned from his training saved his life. He was also able to gather tactically valuable information in his short captivity. These were eventually used as a basis to im-prove military tactics as part of the evolution in fighting terrorism.

To celebrate his feat, his teammates named the hill where he was captured and later escaped after him. The rest is history. Words like “jungle” and “survival” may mean one thing in cities and towns, but they have an entirely different meaning in the mountains. Advances in the development of clothing and gear, equip-ment like Global Positioning System (GPS) and Night Vi-sion Goggles (NVG), Thermal Scope; techniques; and food like the introduction of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) have made life in the wilderness a bit easier not only in the military but as well as in outdoor activities.

But only if you have planned well.

Good planning is half the battle. The amount of prepa-ration you make is directly proportional to your pos-sibility of surviving. When you prepare your load-out and the things that you should bring to the mission, put in first the most essential things that you need in a survival situation with the least essential last. Every member of the military is trained to be tough and stable under pressure but we do not always wish to be in a dangerous situation where we need to rely on our skills and knowledge. But we always have to pre-pare and expect for the worst and hope for the best.

In trying to survive, you will succeed if you know your capabil-ities and limitations, keep a positive attitude, develop a real-istic plan, anticipate fears, and combat psychological stress.

Experience is the best teacher in any survival situa-tion and your reaction depends on your knowledge.

Always keep in mind that anything can happen to you. Those who are mentally and physically prepared are more likely to survive. To deal with an emergency situation, one must remain calm and be able to make decisions and improvise.

When you are alone in the wilderness, instincts will tell you to look for help. But before anything else, think before you act.

Whatever you decide to do, always remember to focus your thoughts on the task at hand and ex-ecute your plan of action well. But stay flexible.

AX Exclusive

n an effort to clear the air regarding the Imple-menting Rules and Regulations concerning airsoft

guns and the game itself, AX sat down with personali-ties who have the final say both from the Philippine Na-tional Police Firearms and Explosives Division(PNP-FED) and the President of the Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers of the Philippines Inc. (AFAD).

Can you clarify the “grace period” issue? We still abide by the grace period. For now, we are still not implementing the need for the “Orange tips” and the engraving of the se-rial numbers on the guns but after the grace period, we will be strict about it.

What is the official stand of the PNP-FED on airsoft? The PNP in general is very supportive of airsoft. We try to accommodate all your (airsofters) requests and we practically revised the existing IRR as a compromise. The PNP is very lenient when it comes to the implemen-tation of the IRR but we also encourage everyone to take advantage of the grace period to register their guns.

Most of the airsoft community believes that the implementing rules will be enforced after the grace period expires in July. Is this true? We have temporarily suspended conducting raids but that does not mean that if the grace period ends in July 8, you will start registering your guns on July 9. That’s not how it goes. Submit your applications now while the grace period is still in effect. This is especially true if you are in the airsoft dealer-ship business. Get your papers in order while there’s still time.

How about the airsoft playing sites? All you need to do is inform the local Police Chief. You don’t even need to pay a fee to do this, just

a make sure the local police precint is informed.

Will there be a police presence in the area?I don’t think that’s necessary. The PNP Chief is very supportive of airsoft as a sport, a hob-by and as an industry. All we ask of you(the play-ers) is to register while the grace period still stands.

Does the PNP-FED authorize Mass Registrations? We did not authorize this. It was requested by those who

claim to represent the air-soft community. This can be done upon request(to the FED). The impor-tant thing is that there is a representative from the PNP-FED who will process the applications and necessary fees. You cannot conduct a “mass

registration” by yourselves. Who’s going to process that? Will the forms be properly filled up? Will the applica-tions reach the FED? Airsofters should make the request and we(FED) will send an officer to your area. Just wait for our reply or they can come to our offices to get the application forms and have them filled up at the play-ing sites but the forms have to come back to the FED.

Is there an accredited group/s who represents the FED on matters of airsoft registration? We do not accredit any group. If you have a group or team, you may request for application forms and submit them here at the FED or if you think you have the numbers, we can send FED personnel to you. That can be arranged upon your request There was someone who claimed to be a police officer accepting applications and fees. We have warned that person against doing so and we are considering filing a case against this person. This person is not authorized.

AX

I’m planning to hold a sort of “Airsoft Summit” to call on all representatives of airsoft organizations

to come up with this AAP”

People need to keep in mind that when there is a “mass registration”, is it sanctioned by the FED. If

it is not, it would be illegal.

Heading the Airsoft

section of the F.E.D.

hat is the Airsoft As-sociation of the

Philippines(AAP)?

When you speak of the Airsoft As-sociation of the Philippines, it doesn’t pertain to a particular group. Accord-ing to the memorandum circular, the AAP still does not exist. It just so happened that when the memoran-dum circular was being formulated there was an officer of a certain club who was present was asked to be resource speaker so it was a miscon-ception that there is an existing AAP. I’m planning to hold a sort of “Airsoft Summit” to call on all representatives of airsoft organizations to come up with this AAP. According to the IRR, this AAP will be the umbrella organi-zation governing airsoft dealers and airsoft organizations and function similar to the Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers of the Phil-ippines Inc. or AFAD. Airsoft should have this kind of umbrella organiza-tion.

There seems to be a few groups who are now claiming to be the AAP and organizing Mass Registrations?

These groups are misrepresenting. I even received word that a certain group is now accredited with the AFAD to represent the airsoft com-

munity during Gun Shows.

Also, people need to keep in mind that when there is a “mass registra-tion”, is it sanctioned by the FED. If it is not, it would be illegal. It’s their responsibility to be on the lookout. We are accountable for what we did in Tigerland and Tribeca since we, the FED were there. There was a lot of players and forms simply ran out. The application forms we brought were not notarized but we still ap-proved of them but the originals were left in the office and were properly notarized after.

Do we have satellite offices for the FED?The FED has a Firearms, Explo-sives, Security Agency and Guards Section(FESAGS) office under the regional offices. It is one of the sec-tions in the Operations Division of the region. For example, in Region 1, they have an operations branch. Under this branch will fall a FESAGS section to accommodate transactions regarding firearms, security agen-cies and related matters. It’s like they duplicate our work but on a regional basis but they are not authorized to approve. All transactions are still forwarded to the main headquarters in Camp Crame. Technically, we have satellite offices but are they as knowledgable about airsoft as we are

here at headquarters. In the regional offices, airsoft is not necessarily the priority.

When does the IRR take effect? We are still in the grace period until July 8. It simply means that we are lenient on application requirements for players like receipts, the orange tip and serial numbers. We are how-ever very stringent on the dealers because this is where it all starts. There is no “grace period’ as far as dealers are concerned. Raids on air-soft shops are ongoing as we speak. Even the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group(CIDG) is conducting raids on unregistered shops.

What about the orange tip? There are a number of ways to comply with the law or the IRR. It doesn’t necessarily mean that what is on the IRR sticks. If you want to be realistic in airsoft, the orange tip is unacceptable. It’s frustrating isn’t it?? You may comply with the orange tip rule when transporting or commut-ing to and from the playing site. You can do this by getting a replacement flash hider. Put the orange part while in transit then change to the realistic one when you get to the site. When this is all ironed-out, there will be no further problems. Just don’t go out there and seriously hurt each other while playing.

Your gun will be confiscated simply because it is not registered and covered by a PTT

Who assigns the serial numbers? We actually have a series for those who do not have serial num-bers. Once the application is approved, the serial number is as-signed to a particular airsoft gun. That’s the effect of the grace period. We are still lenient and do not require the numbers to be engraved. For now, the owners themselves may assign a 3-letter and 6-digit serial number as long as they take on the responsibility of having the numbers engraved themselves. It’s very important that the serial numbers match that engraved in the gun and indicated in the Permit to Transport(PTT).

What parts of the gun should bear the serial number? The serial number may be engraved on the magazine housing, barrel or receiver. There are no specific placements as long as it is conspicuous.

So only registered guns will be allowed for play?Precisely! If it’s not registered, you can’t bring it with you in games.

If I brought a gun to a game without the necessary papers and I got caught. What would be the penalty?Your gun will be confiscated simply because it is not registered and covered by a PTT.

Will foreigners be allowed to own airsoft guns? The IRR is very specific that only Filipino citizens will be al-lowed. If foreigners want to play, they can rent at the playing site or borrow from a player at the site.

How about those players who wish to attend international competitions? We usually issue a Special Permit for those who attend the SEA Games or the Olympics. The guns are either shipped via cargo or as checked-in luggage. This is subject to the approval of the Chief of the PNP.

How long should the registration process take? When I assumed this post, there was no specific counter orwindow for airsoft. Now, we have a counter and a newly-ac-quired computer assigned to handle airsoft transactions. It’s counter number 2.

What are the necessary papers needed during an airsoft exhibit?During “gun shows”, a Permit to Transport(PTT) and Permit to Display(PTD) must be secured. Before that one must secure a License to Operate(LTO). Once the LTO is issued, the PTT and the PTD will come automatically. If you have the LTO, you will be authorized to sell airsoft guns during exhibits.

What is the role of the FED during Gun Shows? Can the sellers transport the goods themselves or do they need to be escorted by the PNP? We are very strict during gun shows. We keep a record of all the serial numbers of all the guns on display during gun shows. Not all of the guns on display may be sold. We make sure that all the guns have corresponding PTT’s and they are escorted by PNP personnel to and from the display venue. After the show, all the guns are inspected and placed in a container then transported back to Camp Crame again with police escorts regardless of the distance to the venue.

Do buyers need a permit to transport a newly-ac-quired AEG?Yes. That’s how it should be. Upon purchase of the unit, all the necessary papers need to be issued. That’s specifically why I was there during the Guns and Hobbies show--to sign the necessary release papers of AEG’s purchased during the exhibit.

How do you deal with illegal dealers and sellers? We cannot supervise everyone unless we get a tip that there is an illegal dealer in a given area. If I get a call, I send out an inspection team and if the team verifies that the dealer doesn’t have the necessary papers, we confiscate every-thing. As of now, the requirements for dealers are not strictly imposed. Get registered with the Department of Trade and Industry(DTI) first. Register as “trading” or “general merchan-dise”. If the business permits are legal and the owner can run the business, there should be no problem getting the FED approval. This is why we send out inspection teams prior to the approval of a dealer’s LTO. - AX

“Understanding the role of the AFAD in

the airsoft world”

Page 77: Airsoft Extreme July 2008

Can you give us an overview of what the AFAD is all about?During the Martial Law era of the 1970’s to the early 1980’s, there were only 2-firearms dealers—P.B. Dioni-sio and Squires Bingham(now Armscor). After the “EDSA Revolution” of 1986, the number of dealers in the industry grew so after the revolution, we decided in 1989 to band together and form the association; to police the industry, to represent the industry with the government institutions like the Philippine Constabulary back then to be more lenient with the regulations regarding firearms. Through the AFAD, the firearms industry now had a voice. We are proud that through the years, AFAD has prevailed and so far, we are the only legitimate association of its kind.

How many dealers are members of the AFAD?There are over 300-firearms dealers but the active mem-bers I would say would be about a hundred. If you had say, a dealership in Mindanao and the main branch in Manila, the Mindanao branch will count as one even if it was owned by the same company.

How many buy guns for defensive purposes and how many buy guns for sports?I would think that the defense market is bigger. There are a lot of people who buy guns and just keep it in the house. Sport shooters would take up just a small segment.

Do you conduct Safe Gun Handling seminars? We advise customers that once they buy the gun, they have to go to the firing range to try out their guns aside from the mandatory seminar. A lot of customers appre-ciate this because more often than not, after they buy the guns, they hardly get to use them. We also hold Gun Safety seminars during gun shows.

How did AFAD come to consider the marketing and distribution of airsoft?Since the association was regulated by the FED, we didn’t want to risk our licenses by selling items which were banned by a Presidential Decree. After the Imple-menting Rules and Regulations came out and a lot of guys are now into airsoft, that’s when we came in.

What will AFAD do about illegal sellers?During the Martial Law era, gun smuggling was ram-pant because of the restrictive rules and regulations. Firearms were only sold to government agencies and not for the civilian market. Replica guns were basi-cally illegal. After 1986, it was already legal to import firearms. Now that there is an IRR, the FED will be in a better position to control the items and eventually, smugglers and illegal sellers will disappear. AFAD will take charge of marketing and distribution in close part-nership with the FED.

The Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers of the Philippines Inc. (AFAD) was registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission in March 9, 1989. Its membership roster consists of dealers, manufacturers, gun smiths, gun clubs and inventors in the firearm industry.

Major accomplishments of the AFAD include:

• The initial granting in 1992, by the Commission on Elections(COMELEC) for the suspension of the implementation of Section 32 of RA 7166 suspend-ing the issuance of firearm licenses for the duration of the election period• Consolidated firearms owners and providing the foundation of PROGUN in 1992 and the holding of the first Defense and Sporting Arms Show(DSAS) in 1993 under its auspices• The granting of the “Authority to Display Firearms” in respective stores and offices of AFAD members in 1993• With the help of PROGUN, Senate Bill 1406(Omnibus National Firearms and Explosives Act of 1994) was passed

Page 78: Airsoft Extreme July 2008

I would suggest that the airsoft community should set up a “governing body” or “umbrella organization” like the PROGUN which we basically initiated when a very anti-gun legislation was proposed. For obvious reasons, AFAD could not get into debates because the public viewed us as having vested inter-ests so it was PROGUN’s task to be the voice of the AFAD. So if you come up with an association of airsoft users, we will support you also.

Now that there is the AFAD involvement, are you in favor of implementing gun safety protocol for airsoft?

One other aspect of the shooting sport is the PPSA(Philippine Practical Shooting Association) which advocates very strict Safe Gun Handling rules like never point-ing the muzzle of a gun at somebody. We have a problem when it comes to airsoft because you guys shoot each other. I would think that airsoft should have a similar component or an equivalent of the PPSA.

This is all very new to me. I never realized that there would be problems like this so I would think that the main thrust of the association will be marketing. Since we also advocate the same safety considerations on real guns and we are going into airsoft, I guess it will eventually lead to that. - AX

This year, AGL went up against personnel of the LAD in their home turf at the Camp O’Donnel military base in Capas, Tarlac--approximately a 2-hour drive north of Metro Manila. The soldiers were backed up by armored vehicles like the Humvee, V150 and other tracked vehicles. AGL played the role of a platoon-sized, guerilla unit and were mostly on foot.

Although this event had been planned months in advance, the excitement had overcome me

and I hardly had any sleep the night before the game. Once we got to the rally point where a Humvee was to escort our convoy to the base, I was more than overwhelmed. The 2-hour drive seemed to take forever and when we finally ar-

rived, everyone was fired up.

After the mandatory Safe Gunhandling lecture, the all-female “Iron Maidens” squad had a go at the 5.56mm rifles and the boys took pot shots at steel and moving targets with the pistols. I was itching to get my hands on the “552” but since I was on-assignment for AX and a volunteer Range Officer, I could only watch and sniff gunpowder...sigh!

After lunch, we mount-ed up on the RV’s again and proceeded to the jungle where our LAD friends were already preparing the first scenario of the day--a

“sweep and clear” of a village held and occupied by the AGL. Both teams were matched up evenly in terms of manpower but the Army had armor to back them up. The only way to stop the armor vehicles was to ac-tually get up close and personal and tapping it! In the second scenario, the Army had taken positions in the village without the support vehicles and the AGL had to overrun it. Sounds simple but not quite.

As expected, real soldiers definitely have the edge even without armor. They moved with lightning fast reflexes and they were masters of the terrain. They also had better trigger control and they were careful not to blowout their ammo supply. They were mostly on the move and outmaneuvered us, never staying in one position long enough for us to get a fix on a target. Admittedly, we airsofters took quite a beating. Our guns ran dry and we were hugging the ground most of the time while the LAD took advantage of high ground, camouflage and good old common sense. We still had

to keep in mind that we do this on weekends and these guys face real bullets almost on a daily basis.

At the end of the day, we all shook hands and had a “boodle fight” dinner. I took a good old fashioned, com-munal Army shower and as we all lay in our bunks in-side the rustic but cozy barracks that night in the base, we all thought to ourselves that we were not out there to win but we were on a mission--airsofters play differently and that makes us the perfect OPFOR to the military. We may have gotten our butts kicked but this was all in the name of service to the country. In our own little way--by being OPFOR-- we have contributed to making the Filipino soldier a better fighter.

position on the tournament board as each one employed different strategies in achiev-ing the objective of the scenario. The Take and Hold Scenario Take and Hold puts a lot of emphasis on teamwork, tactics, and strategy. The gen-eral premise of the scenario is to encour-age both teams to attempt to reach the center position in the field (marked with a flag). Having TAKEN the position, at least one surviving team member must be within

the objective at any given time. This is called HOLDING Standard TAKE and HOLD requires the team to have at least one surviv-ing member hold the position for ex-actly one minute. Once the minute is reached, the respective hold time-keeping marshal will end the game. If a player who is HOLDING gets eliminated and no other teammates are HOLDING the objective, then the HOLD TIME for that teamgets reset. Either team may then attempt to TAKE the vacant objective and HOLD it in turn.

Game time stops as soon as the flag is grabbed and the normal 110 points will be awarded to the surviving team.3) Game Time and count points – The game time expires and a halt is called to the skirmish. Hostile Grounds made this event in such a way that the spectators

We have introduced the time trial competition at hostile grounds. The

two-man representatives of each playing team wherein one bears the flag, and the other protects the flag bearer while trying to bring down the other team’s flag-bearer, and vice versa. Once the flag-bearer gets shot, his team, automati-cally loses the round.

The final round robin format escalated excitement and ten-sion as 6 teams vied for the championship.

Participating teams includes the Brothers in Airsoft Games of Northern Elite Troop (BAGNET), Provincial Capitol Air-soft Team (ProCAT), Ilocos Norte Airsoft Team (INAT), the GLEDCO Ultimate Battle Airsoft team (GUBAT), Highly Organized Rangers of Northern Elite Troops (HORNETS), Northern Alliance Tigers (NAT), Airsoft X-treme Ilocano

Shooters (AXIS), Bacarra Rangers Airsoft Team (BRAT), Batac City Airsoft Team (BCAST), and special mention to the two teams from Vigan City: the Ilocos Sur Air-soft Club (ISAC) and Airsoft Ilocos. As no tournament is ever possible without the said teams whogave their support simply by joining and attending with no guarantee of winning whatsoever.

This same year on December, SK-FP Erika Ong and SB Member Eric Ong together with LETAG and Airsoft Xtreme International Magazine (Philip-pines), are hoping to bring you “Vintar Dam Siege”, wherein the Sangguniang Kabataan has already adopted the old Governor’s Mansion as the main battle field, adding more realistic scenarios and

THE FIRING LINESHOULDER-FIRED WEAPONS

fter going through the basics of the pis-tol, let’s now move on to longer, shoulder-fired weapons like the rifle, carbine and

submachinegun(SMG). Basically, any weapon designed with a stock was meant to be fired from the shoulder for maximum effectiveness, controllability and accuracy.

In this edition of The Firing Line, we had the unique op-portunity to handle and fire a “shorty” M4 modified for

close-quarters combat(CQC) and chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge. In keeping with the Fir-ing Line tradition, all the weapons used in this sec-tion are actual firearms. Utmost care was taken to ensure that the session was both safe and bearable. Note that shorter weapons tend to shoot louder than their full-sized counterparts and emit a significant amount of muzzle blast. For the shooter, it poses a minimal amount of discomfort but to the onlookers including the Range Officer on-deck, the experience can be excruciating when caught unaware or with-out proper hearing protection. It would be well ad-vised to use rated earmuffs during the firing session.

Keep both eyes open when aligning your sights.

SIGHT ALIGNMENTThe front and rear sights were incor-porated into a firearm’s design for a simple purpose—keeping the barrel straight. This translates into an im-aginary line which runs from the rear sight all the way to the target.

THE FIRING LINESHOULDER-FIRED WEAPONS

More importantly, NEVER forget the 4-basic Safe

Gun Handling rules:

1. Consider every firearm as loaded. Empty the weapon and check the chamber just to be sure.

2. Finger OFF the trigger until ready to fire. This rule cannot be stressed enough. Consciously practice until perfected. It is a simple rule which can prevent potential range hazards for both firearms and airsoft guns.

3. Always keep the muzzle of a firearm in a SAFE direction. When in a range, keep the muzzle downrange and away from onlookers. NEVER handle a firearm when a person is downrange while resetting or patch-ing targets. A pistol must be hol-stered and long weapons should be set down.

4. Be conscious of what lies around and beyond your target. Before you fire a shot, make sure that nothing will be in the way. Also make sure that the target will be set against a backstop that will be sufficient to stop a bullet completely and not throw the slug back towards you or in a general “uprange” direction.

STANCEThe basic firing stance for a long weapon is similar to a box-ing stance with the upper body slightly oblique to the target. Legs are slightly bent as if ready to throw a punch or a kick to an opponent.

MOUNTINGInstead of a firing grip, proper mounting is essential in handling a shoul-der-fired weapon. There are 2-ways to do this.

STANDARD: the key to proper mount-

ing and handling a long weapon is knowing

where to position the stock or the butt. In

standard mounting, the greater part of the

surface area of the butt should be placed in

the fleshy but muscular “pocket” between

the collar bone and the shoulder. Both arms

should be pulling the weapon close to the

body. The elbows are tucked close to the

torso for added stability and the butt should

be locked-tight with the shooter’s cheek

“welded” into place to absorb recoil and to

best acquire the weapon’s sights. The entire

body should be poised to “lean” on the shot.

Recoil is not so severe in rifles or carbines

but if you shoot shotguns, it will feel like a

solid kick from a karate expert especially

when firing full-power, “00” buckshot shells!

SHORT-STOCKING: this mount-

ing style is used mostly in assault or

close-quarter combat (CQC) situations

where the shoulder-fire weapon is in

“point-and-shoot” mode. Only the heel

of the buttstock comes into contact with

the shoulder but the shooter’s cheek

maintains a good “weld” and a good

visual of the weapons iron sights or

optics. Under extreme circumstances,

there may not be enough time to ac-

quire a good sight picture and the art

of “indexing” a target comes into play.

Short-stocking provides a good fulcrum

when bringing the weapon to bear in

an instant without compromising a

shooter’s capacity to absorb recoil.

SIGHT PICTURE and OPTICSBasic rifle iron sights consist of a front post and “ghost ring” rear sights. A good sight picture is when only the front post is in clear focus and the rear sights become nearly invisible. Iron sights are fairly effective even in ranges beyond the 100-meter range. They work regardless of weather condition and even without batteries. The only disadvantage to iron sights is when you need to engage targets at near-contact distances or if you need to engage hostiles under low-light conditions. This is where illuminated optics are best suited for.

Modern optic sights use either a single dot or an illuminated scale with gradations to compensate for elevation. Dot sights are best for CQC and optics which have the illuminated scale are best for distance shooting.

The sight picture from an optic sight

Just like the pistol, it is also important to keep both eyes open when firing a rifle or carbine. This is because our brain’s ability to gauge dis-tance depends on the three dimensional image rendered by both the left and the right eye. Hunt-ers have always used this method to keep track of where a prey runs to in case they don’t get the first shot in. This skill can certainly be useful especially in a tactical situation.

VERTICAL FOREGRIP

It may seem cosmetic to some but the vertical foregrip does have a tactical purpose. For one, it was designed to keep the muzzle level during full-automatic fire as in the case of the HK MP5K and some AK variants. Another im-portant function of the vertical grip is “weapon retention” especially in CQC situations where there is the possibility of the weapon being wrestled away from the operator. This is why many weapons originally designed without the vertical grip are being fitted with after-market accessories via Picatinny rails.

Keep both eyes open to get a good three-dimensional image of the target and its approximate distance

In the airsoft world, it is not uncommon to find players who “spray and pray”. Generally speaking, no amount of firepower will ever compensate for good shot placement. Knowing your weapon and how to handle it will more than make up for all the bells and whistles attached. As a rule, it is never the gun but the shooter who wields it that’ll make the difference.

A vertical grip helps in weapon retention

Team GhostGuams

ormed when Guam’s first official airsoft organization held its first-ever tournament in the summer of 2006, Team Ghost are a group of veteran airsofters who possessz strong ties to the island’s airsoft origins. With weapons

and tactics that are second to none to any other team on island, Team Ghost is a force to be reckoned with on the skirmish field.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGSBefore it all began back in early 2005, airsoft was practically unheard of on the small pacific island of Guam. Paintball had long established itself as the dominant “extreme sport” on the island for years now – Why would anyone want to play anything else? For Glen Umadhay, founder of Team Ghost, and one of the origi-nal pioneers of airsoft on Guam, it was the urge to try something new – The urge to try something different. “In the beginning, it was really just a group of friends and I who wanted to try some-thing new. Paintball wasn’t for us – It was way too expensive. We originally saw our first glimpse of what airsoft was over the internet, and after doing a lot of research, we really wanted to

give it a try,” he said. Umadhay and his group of soon-to-be airsoft addicts purchased their first airsoft replicas at a shop called Toys N’ Joys, who, like any other business that carried airsoft goods at the time, were limited to selling low priced electric guns and spring pistols. It was at this storefront that he soon met fellow then-amateur airsofter and future Team Ghost co-founder Ran-dolph Pili, who also had a small group of friends who were also willing to get into the game. Pili recalls how it all be-

gan: “We got pretty well acquainted with each other fairly quickly, and talked about game ideas: How were we going to get started? Where were we going to play? We eventu-ally decided to set up Saturday skirmishes at two different game sites, both of which were frequented by paintballers,” he said. These sites were located in the island’s largest village of Dededo, along its long and winding NCS road. The first of the sites was an aban-doned Navy publications building, and the sec-ond a long-deserted Federal Aviation Admin-istration (FAA) complex. The new fields gave Umadhay’s and Pili’s groups more than enough ground to start airsofting in: “We all had a great time, and it was the game in one of its purest forms. There were only about a dozen of us in the beginning, but in the next coming weeks, our numbers would rise at a surprising rate… friends told friends about this new sport called airsoft, and new faces were showing up to our skirmishes every weekend,” Umadhay said, re-calling this early era of Guam’s airsoft heritage.

AIRSOFT EXTREME GUAMThree months later, the two groups of ac-quaintances had eventually turned into one big group of friends. It would soon be their deci-sion to be united officially under one organized group called “Airsoft Extreme Guam” (A.E.G.). In a few short months, A.E.G. would grow to become Guam’s largest organized airsoft community with over 60 active members by mid-2006 – Not bad at all for a small group of 12 who started just less than half a year ago. And from this point on, there was no turning back - As the game continued to evolve every coming game week, many players were retir-ing their low-end, first generation China guns and were either upgrading to newer Chinese metal-gear-boxed clones, or going straight to buying Tokyo Marui and Classic Army AEGs from Toys N’ Joys’ newly updat-ed airsoft department. A good number of airsofters were also changing out of their casual civilian loadouts and were moving on to wearing legitimate BDUs and MOLLE vests. The game was quickly gaining notoriety on island – And to think it all started with a chance meeting between two groups of friends just wanting to try something new.

FOUNDING TEAM GHOST

During the summer of ’06, competition was heating up

between members of the newly formed A.E.G organization, and a summer tournament would be well under way. The rules for the tournament were simple: During a span of 4 weeks, there would be a total of four 10-man teams going against each other in a team deathmatch game scenario. The last team standing would be declared the winner. There would be no cash prize for this tournament – No trophy, even: The only prizes up for grabs were bragging rights. It was soon then that Glen Umadhay and Randolph Pili would found the roots of a team that would soon become infamous among Guam’s airsoft scene: Team Ghost.

Team Ghost would be officially founded on June 12, 2006 to compete for the title of champion in Guam’s first organized airsoft tournament. Ghost’s original roster was co-captained by Glen

Umadhay and Randolph Pili, and consisted of Dominic Quitoriano, Armelyn Fernandez, and Joy Cariaga. During practice games, the team found strength within their cutting-edge tactics and considerable amounts of team-work. However, with three other formidable teams also fighting for the title and wanting it just as badly as they did, competition would be nothing but fierce for the Ghosts. But after nearly a month of hard-fought, hard-won skir-mishes against other members of the island’s finest airsoft teams, Team Ghost was able to secure absolute victory on the brackets, de-claring themselves as the winners of Airsoft Extreme Guam’s first-ever tournament of champions. “We played hard, played honest, and played to win,” said Armelyn Fernandez, recalling the team’s first well-earned victory.

TEAM GHOST TODAY Two years later in 2008, the ever-versatile members of Team Ghost have been able to stick together and establish themselves as one of Guam’s most prolific airsoft teams.

With their matching Crye Multicam BDUs and specialized weapons, the Ghosts have proven themselves as a group who can handle a wide variety of combat situations, from intense CQB battles to long-ranged woodland games. But what exactly makes Team Ghost so special? Ghost founder, Glen Umadhay had this to say about the team: “I think teamwork is what really sets Ghost apart from a lot of the other teams on island – We work together to accomplish our goals, whether it be to eliminate the op-posing force, capture the flag, or rescue a hostage. All of us have been playing since the beginning… as the sport continues to grow, we also grow as dedicated players.”Each member of Team Ghost is not limited to fulfilling only one specific role: All of its members are well-versed in using different types of weaponry, given the specific situ-ation of the game scenario being played. Any AEG is fair game for the Ghosts, al-though the ever-popular MP5 and Armalite rifle platforms are favorites among many

members of the team. Ghost member Dominic Quitoriano uses his TM SIG552 and CYMA M14 SOCOM to great effect on the play field, using either one of the two for different situa-tions: “CQB is where all the action is at for me, so you usually see me using my 552 for indoor games. I also use my M14 as a general purpose weapon, although it makes an ideal long range field AEG,” he said. Randolph Pili, co-captain of Team Ghost, uses his old, trusted MP5SD5 for mid-to-close range encounters, and brings out his highly modified G3SG-1 to keep the Opfor’s heads down at longer ranges: “I try to keep my play style diversified. One game I could be pro-viding sniper or support fire for my team mates from more than half the field away with my SG-1… and in another game, I could be right in the frontlines with them with my MP5,” he said. PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

The team is constantly growing along with the island’s airsoft scene, and is currently attempt-ing to implement Milsim-style games into the

mainstream. Run of the mill “fun” games (spray n’ pray style skirmishes, usually played with all high-capacity magazines) are the dominant type of game style cur-rently being played on island. Ghost member Joy Cariaga believes that im-plmenting Milsim-style gameplay will be the next big step up on how the game of airsoft will be played on the island in the near future: “I think it’s understandable that Milsim hasn’t really taken off here yet, as there’s a lot more technical plan-ning involved compared to your ordinary [fun] game. I’m hoping that in the future, Milsim-style games will be more common to see, as they’re a very realistic and very rewarding way to play the game,” she said.

Ghost hopes to fully implement Milsim with the Airsoft Extreme Guam group by the end of 2008. Objective-based games, such as bomb diffusal and hostage re-trieval are seeing first light thanks to the team’s efforts at the A.E.G organization’s skirmish fields. The Ghosts also plan to include the exclusive use of low and mid-capacity magazines for a more complete and realistic military simulation experi-ence. With the will to take the sport further than ever before on the island of Guam, Team Ghost will continue to do their best to innovate in Guam’s ever-chang-ing, ever-evolving airsoft community.
