Operational Improvement

• Continuous Descent operations increased from

an average of 56% of arrivals in 2006, to 78% in 2014/15.

• Continuous Climb operations increased from 55% of departures in 2006, to 67% in 2014.

• Steeper approaches – efforts in recent years to trial and develop steeper approaches into airports, offering the scope to move the noise footprint of arriving aircraft towards the airport.

• Reduced Engine Taxi – noise benefits in addition to emissions reduction

Land Use Planning

• Noise contours areas reduced in size by nearly 14%, yet the population

living within these contours has risen by almost 4%. .

• The AOA collected the given noise contour (57dB LAeq 16 hour) of 18

airports and we assessed the type and number of new buildings

granted planning permission and being built within those areas.

Nationally, 5,761 homes have been granted planning permission,

started or completed construction in the noise contours of the UK’s 18

biggest airports.

Airspace Change Process

• Modernised airspace will enable us to further improve continuous

climbs and descents, reduce holding and implement multiple routes,

which can help minimise noise and meet environmental targets.

• Committed to educating stakeholders on the need for airspace

modernisation and engaging with local communities to find innovative

solutions to manage aircraft noise .

• A need for a clear, stable policy and guidance on airspace change

which remains flexible to the local needs of individual airports and

communities.
