The model recognises that an airport can do more than perform its traditional aeronautical services, that it can evolve new non-aeronautical commercial facilities, services and revenue streams. With airports typically surrounded by hundreds or even thousands of hectares of undeveloped land that acts as a n environmental buffe r for nearby residents, it has been recognised t hat airports are sitting on a potential goldmine of real estate opportunities. Office blocks, hotels, convention centres, medical facilities, free tra de zones and even entertainment and theme parks can be built to generate new sources of revenue for the airport operator and make the airport a business or tourism de stination in its own right. [1] It exudes the atmosphere of a global city where people of all nationalities can be found. It is a place where work and recr eation meet. Tourists, busine ssmen and businesswomen, those meeting and greeting people; all visitors feel at home and relaxed in an Airport City. The Airport City concept consists of a number of logically combined elements that reinforce each other. On the one hand, the services an d facilities are guaranteed t o guide travelers easily through the airport process. On the other ha nd, the facilities and activities have been designed to meet the individual needs of travelers and visitors to the extent possible. [2] An aerotropolis (pl. aerotropolises or aerotropoli) comprises the Airport City and is extending up to 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) outward from major airports.
