Page 2 Guide to International Air Travel

Welcome to your

Airline GuideWith an almost limitless choice of airlines available these days, finding the right one for you can be almost overwhelming. This guide has been put together featuring the latest airline information to assist you when selecting your next airline.

Over the years we have seen increased competition from new airline entrants, variations to airline services and improvements in many business and first class product offerings, making it more difficult to compare airlines in one place in order to make an informed choice. This International Airline Guide is designed to help you select an airline that best suits you.

You may find that one airline offers better business facilities for you than another. Or that flying with some airlines gives you greater flexibility in creating an itinerary due to their alliances. Whilst this Guide can be a useful reference point, your Travel Associates consultant can assist you to come up with the best possible solution to suit your needs. Our consultants have flown on many airlines themselves and are keen to share their own first hand experiences with you. We are only too happy to help.

Inside you’ll find information about the range of full service and low cost carriers we deal with, covering everything from the features and facilities you can expect in each cabin class to travel times to popular international destinations. To view at a glance which cabin classes are offered from different cities, refer to our Cabin Class Grids on pages 66-67.

Enjoy your travels.

What travel documents do I need for international travel? For international travel you need a passport and some countries require a minimum validity and/or an entry visa on the passport. Visa restrictions differ for different passports so make sure you allow plenty of time to obtain the correct documentation. Check with your Travel Associates consultant on booking as some airlines will deny boarding if the right documents are not presented.

What is my baggage allowance? There are two aspects to baggage allowance – checked baggage and hand baggage. Checked baggage allowance for Economy Class is usually 20 kilograms per person to most countries. Exceptions are North and South America, where the allowance is two pieces of 23 kilograms each per person. Hand baggage is restricted to seven kilograms per person. Children have the same allowance as adults. Infants usually don’t have a separate baggage allowance. Travellers in First and Business Class have a more generous allowance. Any excess baggage can be organised prior to travel or at the check-in desk at the airport. Airlines provide for the carriage of sporting equipment; however this differs for each carrier so it’s best to check before you leave.

Are there any restrictions to what items can be carried in checked and hand baggage?Generally, items that are classified as dangerous goods (i.e. may endanger the safety of an aircraft and the passengers onboard) are not permitted in your baggage. Other restrictions you should be aware of include:

• Liquids,aerosolsandgelsinyourhandbaggage.

• Numberofpiecesofhandbaggagee.g.theUK has imposed a restriction of one piece of hand baggage per person.

• Onarrival, youwillberequiredtodeclaregoodsthatare considered a threat to that country. There are large fines in place for failing to declare restricted or prohibited goods, so declare it if you are unsure.

• Dutyfreeallowancesvaryfromcountrytocountryso please check these prior to departure or at the duty free shop before your purchase.

The Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority has guidelines and regulations pertaining to the carriage of dangerous goods, so if in doubt please check before you travel.

Paper ticket or e-ticket?These days, e-ticketing is the norm for most airlines but it is always important to check with your Travel Associates consultant at the time of your booking. While an e-ticket means that you no longer have to have a ticket with you, it is important that you carry a copy of your e-ticket receipt as proof of travel for immigration purposes in other countries.

When do I have to pay for my tickets?Once your travel consultant has made your booking for the dates of your choice the airlines will add a ticketing time limit to the booking. Your booking must be paid for and ticketed prior to this deadline. Ticketing timelines will vary depending on the fare type and, as these are automated through the booking system, any unticketed bookings are automatically cancelled by the airline’s reservation system.

Are there fees and charges for amendments to bookings?Dependingontherestrictionsofthefare, airlinesmayallow changes. However, this is not as straightforward as revalidating a ticket. Penalties can be imposed for a variety of reasons including changing the name on a ticket, the destination, the date of travel or choice of airline. Some airlines will not reissue a ticket; instead they require issuance of a new ticket and refund of the original ticket.

Will I get a refund if I cancel a ticket? This too is determined by the rules of the fare, and most restrictive fares are either non-refundable or have a large cancellation penalty. For partially used tickets, airlines have to assess the value of the remaining sectors and may apply a cancellation penalty as well, which could result in a nil payout. However, airlines may give some consideration for special circumstances.

What type of in-flight entertainment can I expect?Airlines are making significant advances in improving the quality and the quantity of entertainment available onboard their flights. Choosing a carrier with a variety of entertainment can make your long-haul trip much more enjoyable. Most premium airlines offer a personal TV screen in all cabin classes with the option to play games, as well as hundreds of hours worth of audio and video content.

Travel tipsMaking the most of air miles and pointsAir miles or points are earned by flying or buying services from frequent flyer program partners and make up the ‘currency’ you collect to redeem or upgrade tickets. Today, more than half of all miles are earned not through flights, but on the ground through credit cards linked to airline programs that allow you to collect frequent flyer miles with almost any purchase from groceries to petrol.

Air miles benefitsGenerally, in addition to free flights and upgrades, the higher your frequent flyer point status the more airlines will do for you. Typical frequent flyer benefits include extra baggage allowance, dedicated check-in, free use of airport lounges, priority waiting lists, and priority for upgrades,as well as bonus points when you stay at an affiliate hotel.

3 tips to get more points1. Choose an airline that best serves

your travel need and use only that airline and its affiliated partners, including airlines, hotels and car rental agencies.

2. Consolidate your miles onto one charge or credit card.

3. Always provide your frequent flyer number when booking your trip; make sure you read your statements carefully and compare your mileage figures with the airline’s figures; go online and watch for bonus offers to earn additional miles.

ValidityTypically, air miles remain valid for three years, but it’s important to check with your frequent flyer program.

Redeeming air milesRedeeming miles can be a tricky matter. Airlines often limit the number of redemption seats available on certain routes and create blackout periods around holiday times. Miles can also be used for upgrades and various non-travel awards.

NeutralTravelling the world

needn’t cost the earth.

What is an airline hub?A hub or home base is an airline’s primary transfer point when there is no direct flight. It is usually the airline’s main airport. Dependingonthesizeandpopularityofthecountry, an airline may utilise more than one hub.

Can I use the airline lounges at airports?Airlines usually offer this facility to their clients travelling in First and Business Class, or in some instances, as a benefit of membership to their frequent flyer programs. Increasingly, however, airlines and airports are offering this option as a paid service to transit passengers with facilities including showers, massages, meals and refreshments.

I’m going to a couple of different places, am I best to fly with just one airline? Most people assume they will fly with one airline to their destination, but this is sometimes not your best option. Airlines understand the need for flexibility and form alliances to cater to this need and offer fares which include Round the World, Circle Asia, Circle Pacific and airpasses by region. These options are extremely popular so talk to your Travel Associates consultant about creating a flight plan that suits you.

Why do fares change so frequently?Airlines restrict the number of seats that can be sold at each fare level. The following

factors all affect how many seats are sold at each fare:

•Dependingondemandforadestination, airlines split the calendar year into low and high seasons.

•Globaldistributionofseatsforsalesfrommultiple markets.

•Lowpricedfaresattracthighrestrictionsand penalties and as the price increases, fewer restrictions and penalties apply.

Are all my airport taxes collected on the ticket?A lot of countries allow their government and airport taxes to be collected on the ticket, however some still collect taxes locally. The tax amount fluctuates based on the exchange rate.

NeutralThe unfortunate truth is that flying emits a great deal of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. But by offsetting your share of the flight emissions through a small contribution, you can fly ‘carbon neutral’.

How does it work?Essentially, when you buy a carbon offset, proceeds from your contribution are invested into offset projects which help reduce the impact of carbon emissions on the environment.

How can I carbon offset my flights? Many airlines now offer you the chance to do this when you book with them. However, even if they don’t, Travel Associates has teamed with Cleaner Climate to allow all travellers to offset their carbon dioxide emissions from air travel. We can help

you calculate your emissions and find out how much it will cost to offset them. Then, if you choose to offset, you can make a one-off offset payment which will help fund Cleaner Climate’s Offset Project.

What is the Offset Project?Cleaner Climate has partnered with Phillips, one of the world’s leading electronic companies, to supply and install six million energy efficient light bulbs into poor South African communities with little or no infrastructure.

The environmental benefit of this program is the equivalent of making 215,000 cars carbon neutral each year for seven years.

Phillips will also train and work with unemployed locals on energy efficiency. This will not only help reduce the harmful environmental impact of CO2 but will

empower the communities by creating hundreds of paying jobs. In addition, the project will help release pressure on the fragile local electricity grid and therefore minimise blackouts.

How do I know my money has gone to offsetting?Once you make your offset payment, you will receive an offset certificate from Cleaner Climate verifying your carbon offset.

Offsetting your flights is one small step you can make to reduce your carbon emissions – and help our environment. To find out more about carbon offsetting your flights through Travel Associates go to http://www.travel-associates.com.au/travelservices/cleanerclimate/

THAI is a full-service airline offering seamless service and the tradition of gracious Thai hospitality making every passenger’s journey very special.

The timeless tradition of gracious Thai hospitality is as much a hallmark of THAI as it is of the kingdom of Thailand itself. When you step onboard a THAI aircraft you will be greeted with a warm Sawasdee (a traditional Thai welcome) just as gentle Thai’s would invite you into their home.

THAI

Thai Airways International flies to over 70 destinations across five continents (including 38 flights a week from Australia to Thailand).

Royal First Class The Royal First Class treatment begins when travellers are met curb-side at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport and escorted to a luxurious lounge for effortless check-in.

Seating

Once onboard, the luxury continues. Enjoy the privacy of a segregated cabin boasting the latest innovation in luxury – newly installed sleeper seating. Electronically controlled, the newly designed shell seats convert to superbly comfortable beds, with 180 degrees of recline, almost 7 feet of space to stretch out in and fully adjustable leg and foot rests, making them truly state-of-the-art.

Dining

In-flight dining and a premium bar service, including Dom Perignon on arrival, is a major highlight of THAI’s Royal First Class experience. The exquisite presentation of each meal reflects the skill and experience of THAI’s master chefs. With choices for every course, dishes are presented, beautifully garnished, on fine porcelain, in a style more suitable for a classic gourmet restaurant.

Entertainment

Entertainment is also at a premium in Royal First Class. Each seat is equipped with the latest interactive Audio-Video On-Demand (AVOD) entertainment system, which allows you to start, pause, fast forward, or stop any of the hundreds of program choices

whenever you like, so the hours just fly by. Plus, there’s an in-seat telephone and laptop power point to satisfy all your business needs.

Royal Silk ClassFor frequent business travellers, for whom flying is often a major element of their working week, THAI’s Royal Silk Class delivers an outstanding option.

Seating

Royal Silk Class seats on each 747-400 and A340-600 aircraft include bed lengths of 76 inches, a pitch of 60 inches and 167 degree recline. On the new 777-200ER aircraft the features include a bed length of 70 inches, pitch of 61 inches and 163 degrees of recline.

Dining

THAI’s master chefs have created innovative menus for Royal Silk Class, which are changed often to create variety for regular business travellers. Meals are served restaurant style, with choices for every course, and always include a premium bar service.

Entertainment

Entertainment options abound in Royal Silk Class, starting at the airport. The lounges at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport offer every possible facility for relaxation, refreshment, or business in the wi-fi/internet connected private meeting rooms and work areas. Then, once onboard your flight, your electrically controlled seat is equipped with telephone, laptop power point and interactive Audio-Video On-Demand (AVOD) system, offering a selection of latest run movies, TV, games, music, documentaries and flight information, ensuring that there is something to entertain everyone.

THAI offers 38 flights a week from Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth) to Bangkok, and from Bangkok to over 70 destinations throughout Europe, Asia, New Zealand, the Middle East, South Africa and America. THAI provides a strong network within Asia, flying to over 50 different points.

Economy Class

Not all Economy classes are created equal. From its earliest days, when THAI was just a small regional carrier, the dynamic growth and unrivalled reputation of this airline has been inspired especially by one outstanding feature – the superior quality of its Economy Class.

Seating

Over the past two years, THAI has carried out a massive program to expand and revitalise every aspect of its Economy Class experience. New, wider seats of the latest design and with a generous 32-34 inch seat pitch for extra legroom have been installed

in many of THAI’s aircraft, to ensure maximum comfort for all passengers.

Dining

The quality of meals and the full complementary bar and refreshments served to THAI’s Economy Class passengers surpass those offered in the Business Classes of many competing airlines. Special care and attention is devoted to the creation and presentation of varied menus and there is a tempting alternative of Asian or Western dishes.

Entertainment

THAI’s new interactive Audio-Video On-Demand (AVOD) entertainment system,

available on its B777-200ER and A340-500/600 aircraft, offers literally hundreds of entertainment options. With larger screens and touch-control commands, passengers can choose between many of the latest multilingual hit movies, classic oldies and popular TV programs.

There are news, travel, destination and information channels, music from jazz to classical, Asian and Western, to please every taste. And there are interactive games and kids cartoons. Plus, toys are always available to keep children occupied, and newspapers and international magazines are offered, including THAI’s own Sawasdee magazine, providing
