i always tend to mistrust statistics until i come across those that are substantiated by real flesh and blood, or in this case, by archi-tecture and water. And that’s precisely what happened the first time i travelled to Mel-bourne with a vague memory of having read that –Vancouver, Canada aside– Victoria’s state capital had the best quality of life of any city in the world. it’s true. At least according to The economist’s interdisciplinary calculations and the strange feeling of nostalgia that co-mes over visitors when they arrive; a certainty that hits you in the form of a stabbing pain: i would be happy and carefree if i lived here.even sundays, which are traditionally over-shadowed by the imminent onslaught of the weekly routine, seem bright and clear in Melbourne. All you need is a spin around saint Kilda, an old summer vacation spot for the city’s elites. saint Kilda is no longer the out-of-the-way resort town it once was. To-day, it is a popular, bustling neighbourhood that stretches elegantly along the ocean, where dozens of kitesurfers plough through the water. The area is full of restaurants and bars with terraces where the locals look as if they’re on a relaxing vacation, as if they were 18th century aristocrats rather than office workers. And everyone seems to have that chic attitude you see when boating adventu-

Uno siempre desconfía de las estadísticas hasta que se cruza con una en carne y hue-so o, mejor dicho, en arquitectura y agua. es lo que me ocurrió la primera vez que viajé a Melbourne con el recuerdo borroso de haber leído que la capital del estado de Victoria era, junto a la canadiense Vancouver, la ciudad con mejor calidad de vida del mundo. es cierto. Así lo demuestra la aritmética interdisciplinar de the Economist y esa extraña sensación de nostalgia que asalta al viajero cuando la visita; una certeza en forma de punzada: aquí yo vi-viría feliz y despreocupado.incluso los domingos, ese tradicional momen-to de angustia ante la inminente llegada de la rutina semanal, parecen diáfanos en Melbour-ne. Basta con darse una vuelta por saint Kilda, el que fuera histórico destino de veraneo de las clases altas. Junto a los artistas locales se encuentra la firma de otros tan famosos como el británico Banksy. son muy recomendables los murales de Croft Alley, Little Bourke street y hosier Lane, junto al restaurante español MoVida.el río Yarra, que es postal, vía de comunicación y pa-tio de recreo, atraviesa la ciudad. Por el agua surcan los barcos de remeros en simetría perfecta (basta pasear un día para descubrir la fascinación de los australianos hacia el deporte), y por la orilla discurre el carril-bici para aquellos que quieran abarcar más en menos tiempo. Por supuesto, también está la opción de realizar una excursión en barco o tomar un water-taxi que lleve, por ejemplo, hasta los fabu-losos royal Botanical Gardens, un oasis dentro del oasis más grande que es Melbourne.

Melbourne replaced Adelaida as the home of the formula one Aus-tralian Grand Prix in 1996. And in order to host one of the most im-portant car racing events in the world, the city decided to remodel the old Albert Park circuit, which it had been used for races since 1953. The result was a spectacular semi-urban circuit to the south of the city that encompasses the Albert Park Lake, with the ocean on one side and the city skyline on the other. Albert Park has had the privilege of kicking off the World Championship every year except for 2006, and it will be kicking it off again in 2014, between March 14th and 16th.
