Deepavali
Significance of Deepavali Deepavali Festival is celebrated in the Tamil month of Aipasi (October-November)on ‘naraka chaturdasi' thithi, preceding amavasai(Newmoon). The history of Diwali is replete with legends and these legends are moored to the stories of Hindu religious scriptures, mostly the Puranas. Though the central theme of all legends point out to the classic truth of the victory of the good over the evils, the mode of their presentation and the characters differ. Deepavali, being the festival of lights, lighting the lamp of knowledge within us means to understand and reflect upon the significant purpose of each of the five days of festivities and to bring those thoughts in to the day to day lives. To Hindus, darkness represents ignorance, and light is a metaphor for knowledge. Therefore, lighting a lamp symbolizes the destruction, through knowledge, of all negative forces- wickedness, violence, lust, anger, envy, greed, bigotry, fear, injustice, oppression and suffering.

Kethara Gowri viratam is observed for twenty one days starting from Shukla Paksha Ashtami(Eighth moon day in its growing phase) in the month of Puratasi (mid Sep to mid Oct). The final day also should be observed in great devotion. Shakti(Goddess Gowri) wanted to become part of Lord Shiva’s body. She observed the Kethara Viratam, one of Gods favorite viratas. Pleased by Her austerities God gave the left part of His body to shakti and became “Arthanareeswarar”. The viratham is then called “Kethara Gowri Viratham” since Goddess Gowri observed it.

Kantha Shashti
Significance of Kantha Shashti
Lord Murugan known as“Thamilar Kadavul” worshipped in a significant and grand manner in Tamil speaking world. The festival of Kandha Sashti Viratham lasts for six days, starting with the day following the new moon in the month of Aswin(Aipasi), and is extremely important for devotees of Lord Murugan.
The ‘sashti’ or sixth day of the full moon and the sixth day of the new moon are favorite days for Lord Murugan. Some devotees of Lord Murugan observe partial or full fast on each Sashti day and throughout the Kanda Sashti period.
The Sashti falling in on the waxing moon period in the Hindu lunar month of Aippasi or Aswin (October-November) is the day on which Lord Murugan is believed to have killed a super-demon called Sura Padman. This is commemorated in the six-day festival of Kanda Sashti as a symbol of perpetual destruction of evil by God. Each of these six days is, by custom, set apart to recite the glory of Lord Murugan from one of the six scriptures in His praise, namely: Tirumurukarruppadai, Kandar Kalivenba, Kandar Anubhuti, Kandar Alankaram, Kanda Sashti Kavacam and Kanda Puranam.
Giant-sized images of four demons (asuras) are moved on uplifted chariots, and these are symbolically encountered and destroyed by the Lord. This called Soora Samharam. This happens on the sixth day, i.e., the sashti day. On the seventh day, Lord Murugan marries Goddess Valli. This divine marriage is celebrated as “Thiru Kalyanam” by Lord Murugan devotees.
