This year we were joined by eight LAB members representing academic, consortia, and government accounts from six countries. The LAB meeting provides us with a valuable opportunity to discuss the issues that are top of mind with the library community and to consider how AIP Publishing can continue to improve our products and services. Opening remarks from John Haynes, AIP Publishing’s CEO, helped set the tone for the meeting by encouraging our guests to talk about the ever-changing role of the librarian and share their view of the future. We discussed how librarians and publishers support authorship, the impact of government and funder mandates regarding open access and open data, and how the constraints of physical library space as well as budgets are altering the role of the library at their institutions. 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics Our guest speaker this year was Todd Carpenter, Executive Director of NISO, who spoke about importance of data standards and the FAIR Data Principles to make data findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable. This provided a perfect lead-in for breakout sessions on text and data mining, bibliometrics, OA2020, and Dataverse and sharing networks. A discussion about how publishers can help universities and authors broaden exposure to their published articles followed. We also received helpful feedback on AIP Publishing’s library resources, including promotional materials, user guides and account management, that will help us provide the tools and support that our customers deserve. We truly value the time we spent with the Library Advisory Board and look forward to next year. As we plan for the 2018 LAB Meeting if there is an area of interest you feel would benefit the community, let us know by emailing [email protected] In October we recognized and congratulated Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne on their receipt of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics “for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves.” We’re proud to note that all three of these scientists have published multiple articles in AIP Publishing journals. We’ve made samples of their work and other articles about gravitational waves free to read at the following links. AIP Publishing’s 2017 Library Advisory Board (LAB) Meeting

Our fifth annual Library Advisory Board (LAB) meeting took place September 28-29 at AIP Publishing’s offices in Melville, NY. This year we were joined by eight LAB members representing academic, consortia, and government accounts from six countries. The LAB meeting provides us with a valuable opportunity to discuss the issues that are top of mind with the library community and to consider how AIP Publishing can continue to improve our products and services.

We discussed how librarians and publishers support authorship, the impact of government and funder mandates regarding open access and open data, and how the constraints of physical library space as well as budgets are altering the role of the library at their institutions.

Our guest speaker this year was Todd Carpenter, Executive Director of NISO, who spoke about importance of data standards and the FAIR Data Principles to make data findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable.
