2017 was a year of growth for AIA Seattle, and for the city we call home. Our activities flourished as our members played an active role in conversations that are shaping our region.

Advocacy was a major focus for the year. For the first time, we enjoyed the benefits of a staff position dedicated to local advocacy. Members developed positions and took action on housing, homelessness, design review, carbon fees, and Seattle’s central waterfront. New task forces on Housing and Homelessness added significant momentum to our housing policy work.

Programming and public interest in the Center for Architecture & Design continued to grow in 2017, with well

attended exhibits like Futurama Redux, and a host of public and professional programs. The Seattle Design Festival attracted a record audience of over 30,000 with its design explorations of the theme “Power.”

Our robust peer-to-peer professional education continued in 2017, including thought-provoking conferences on future-ready building and urban resilience. Member committees — including new active committees on Mass Timber and Homelessness — produced thoughtful and relevant programs and events.

In addition, our Urban Design Forum elevated the conversation around urban issues; Diversity Roundtable aspired to

inspire future generations of architects that more fully represent the diversity of our region; and our Small Practice and Residential committee reinvigorated AIA Seattle’s offerings for architects with small firms and residential practices.

Thank you to our members, volunteers and sponsors, for demonstrating the critical relevance of architecture and design. In 2018, AIA Seattle will be launching our next strategic plan which will chart a clear and consistent course toward our goals over the next 5 years. We look forward to your voice and participation in our future.

Center for Architecture & Design In partnership with Seattle Architecture Foundation, Design in Public and AIA Washington Council, AIA Seattle opened the Center for Architecture & Design in 2016. The Center not only demonstrates and engages the public in a dialogue about the value of architecture and design, it also creates a place to showcase our membership and space for our members to utilize for casual gatherings, meetings, and programming.

During our second year of operation, the Center had 7,300 visitors; AIA Seattle produced 4 major exhibits, hosted 100 public gatherings, events, and meetings; partnered with dozens of local organizations; and increased the profile of design in our community through extensive earned media coverage.

Design in PublicDesign in Public was founded in 2011 as a strategic initiative of AIA Seattle to celebrate all the ways that design makes life better for Seattle, and to nurture relationships among designers, citizens, city leaders, and future-thinking business innovators. Design in Public hosts the city-wide Seattle Design Festival, which is now the largest design-related event in the Pacific Northwest.

First Annual Design in Public Benefit BreakfastDesign in Public hosted its first-ever benefit breakfast in 2017, gathering our community of design leaders and enthusiasts in support of the mission to celebrate all the ways that design makes life better for Seattle. $25,000 was raised to help elevate new and existing Design in Public programming to provoke imagination and participation in the creation of the places we all want to live.

Seattle Design FestivalThe 2017 Festival theme, POWER, proposed that as the world around us has changed, we must reassert our commitment to civic responsibility. Programs, tours, exhibits, and installations investigated and celebrated the role of design in an evolving place. The Festival ran for 14 days, and included a two-day Block Party, three Design Discussions, and a wide array of programs, tours, exhibits, workshops, and installations across the city.

Community partners’ events explored a variety of perspectives, speaking to the fact that people from all walks of life should be a part of the design conversation and take an active role in creating their best environment.

Highlights included: Miller Hull’s collaboration with Low Income Housing Institute and 118 Design to create the Mighty House prototype, a tiny home installation to raise awareness of homelessness programs; Artefact’s Empowered Youth: Human-Centered Design Beyond Tech using HCD methods to enable positive outcomes for young people; and The Power of Community Engagement in Design of our Urban Fabric with Sam Assefa presented by The Diversity Roundtable, a discussion about the City’s approach to neighborhood planning that allowed attendees to explore issues affecting their communities in which they live and work.

“Design and power don’t really intersect; they exist in a loop, where one begets the other. Because design is the more tangible concept, it becomes an excellent means to discuss the more abstract notion of POWER: its ethics, how it is legitimized, who wields it now to what ends.”T.S. Flock, Seattle Weekly

Futurama Redux: Urban Mobility After Cars & Oil exhibition at the Center for Architecture & Design

In 2017, AIA Seattle produced four successful exhibits at the Center. The goal of our exhibits is to demonstrate the value and relevance of excellent design, and engage visitors to explore design as a tool in everyday life. The Center’s audience is a mix of the design-interested public, children and families, visitors to Seattle, design consumers and design professionals, industry leaders, academics, and critics at the forefront of design professions. Exhibits attracted an audience of 7,300 visitors last year.

Open to All: Designing for the Full Range of Human Experience explored how designers make places, objects, and experiences to better match the diversity of our interactions with them. The exhibit included projects, installations, videos, and hands-on elements that gave visitors a visceral understanding of the critical role design plays in creating an environment of inclusivity.

Smarter Buildings: At the Intersection of Architecture, Design & Technology explored advancements in the field of building technology through case studies of the world’s smartest buildings. Travel Scholarship recipient Derik Eckhardt AIA curated the exhibit from his research in Abu Dhabi, Amsterdam, Boston, Copenhagen, Dubai, London, Portland and Stuttgart.

Extraordinary Playscapes: Imagination Needs Places to Thrive, a traveling exhibit from Design Museum Boston, examined the art, history, science, and importance of play, while telling the story behind some of the most incredible play spaces in the world.

Futurama Redux: Urban Mobility After Cars & Oil, an expanded traveling exhibit from Vienna’s Smarter Than Car, considered how a transition to post-carbon urban mobility might foster sustainability, resilience, and security while improving quality of life.

Promoting Good Housing Options for AllBuilding communities where everyone can find a safe, affordable place to live continues to be a top priority for the Public Policy Board (PPB). In 2017 the PPB strengthened AIA Seattle’s position on Seattle’s Housing Affordability and Livability (HALA) agenda and related components including the Mandatory Housing Affordability policy and changes to code to allow more attached and detached accessory dwelling units. The PPB encouraged members to advocate as architects in public forums on these issues, and formed a Housing Task Force to help inform AIA Seatte’s positions on affordable housing, density, and related policies.

Addressing Homelessness in Our CommunitiesThe PPB took a deeper dive into issues surrounding the increasing prevalence of people experiencing homelessness in our communities, meeting and holding events with government officials and non-profit staff working on the problem. The Homelessness Task Force was created to help increased member engagement on the issue. This group is working to provide education, engage in advocacy, and identify service opportunities for fellow members— including work with Seattle’s innovative The BLOCK Project.

Addressing Carbon in the Built EnvironmentIn 2017, AIA Seattle was a founding member of Shift Zero, the zero net carbon building alliance, which is working to research and advocate for policies that will reduce carbon emissions from buildings in Washington. To date, projects include: 2020 Building Challenge pilot projects; a zero carbon policy toolkit for use by cities and counties; a roadmap outlining the steps needed to reach a zero net energy building code; low carbon affordable housing tax credit programs; point of sale residential energy performance disclosures and upgrades; and property-assessed clean energy financing.

The group will engage in research, advocacy and best practices related to the use of mass timber, and regulatory changes to Seattle and state building codes.

Increasing Advocacy CapacityIn 2017 AIA Seattle hired the first-ever staff dedicated exclusively to advocacy. The new Manager of Advocacy for the Built Environment works with both AIA Seattle and AIA Washington Council to research policies and regulations, support member advocacy, and champion laws and regulations that further the work and priorities of AIA members.

“We, AIA members, can transform

the future of Architecture to its fullest

potential as we realize the profound

impact that the built environment

can have on our society.”

Burcin Moehring FAIA

“It is critical that the architectural community be at the table to advocate on the core issues we care about. AIA Seattle has been instrumental in moving advocacy for the profession into action on a diverse set of topics, including climate change, sustainable urbanization, alternative modes of mobility, an equitable public realm, and the importance of design at all scales in fostering livable, thriving communities.”Osama Quotah AIA

Professional Education

In 2017, AIA Seattle hosted 66 educational programs serving over 1,600 participants.

Major Forums

Building Transparency: Straight Talk in the A/E/C Community Building Transparency Forum generated candid conversations about team dynamics, money, design delivery strategies, and emerging contractual models, while pulling back the curtain on challenges and internal pressures involved in a project. The forum brought multiple perspectives to the table—114 owners, developers, architects, contractors, and financiers—with the vision of forging stronger relationships within the A/E/C community. Keynote Dr. Michael Johnson (Foster School of Business, University of Washington) kicked off the day with a dynamic talk on enhancing collaboration by better understanding individual social identities, mindset, and team structure.

Medical Design Forum: Balancing Costs & Quality in an Evolving LandscapeMedical Design Forum brought together 139 participants to explore how tightening budgets impact healthcare providers and design, particularly in the face of performance metrics affecting revenue streams. In this evolving landscape, design professionals are well-suited to partner with owners and facilities managers to build for an uncertain fiscal future with economical and high quality designs. During the expo portion of the forum, a virtual reality demonstration by Turner MRS offered the audience a chance to explore emerging technology aiming to address expansion and facility improvement. Keynote Christine Malcolm presented Healthcare Industry Transformation: The Convergence of Insurers, Providers, and Operators. The forum concluded with a tour of Seattle Children’s South Clinic in Federal Way.

Future-Ready Building: Disruptive Technology & Data-Driven Design In this future-thinking forum, Keynote Dr. Chris Luebkeman opened the day addressing the future of design and technology from his global perspective as Director of Arup Foresight + Innovation + Research. The planning task force, chaired by Travel Scholarship Award-winner Derik Eckhardt AIA, designed the remainder of the full-day program around provocative panel discussions around topics such as: occupant aware buildings, design disruptions, the evolving role of the architect, and the disconnect between data and knowledge. 100+ thought leaders and industry experts in architecture, engineering, design, planning, and technology gathered to explore how we make buildings and cities future-ready while artificial intelligence prompts us to wonder, is the architect the creator or the curator?

Materials Matter SeriesMaterials Matter, a five-part series developed in collaboration with the Integrated Design Lab, delivered comprehensive, high-level knowledge and strategies for assessing and selecting healthy, sustainable materials. In its second season, half-day sessions included: Healthy Planet: Materials + the Environment, Tools of the Trade: Assessment + Implementation, Just Do it: Strategies for Projects, and Beyond Transparency: Legality, Advocacy + Practice.

The second season of Materials Matter intended to further localize the topics and speakers, expanding on the original curricula with updated content and new voices. 40+ participants benefitted from keynote speakers, panelists and roundtable discussions, but the overall drop in attendance highlighted the work yet to be done in creating urgency around the topic of materials, and prompted staff to rethink the timing of repeated series.

Materials Matter Travels to Other ChaptersIn 2017, AIA Philadelphia and AIA Dallas launched their own Materials Matter series, based on curriculum developed at AIA Seattle. The series will continue to expand, reaching Portland and Denver. Materials Matter also formed the basis for an AIAU online education series.

Resilience Thinking: Places, Spaces, Communities The 2017 thought-leadership summit, Resilience Thinking, addressed a complex buzzword topic head on, asking, how can a socio-ecological understanding of resilience inform design thinking? Keynote speaker Dr. Nikos A. Salingaros (University of Texas at San Antonio) offered the audience a mind-expanding view of urban systems. Afternoon breakout sessions provided 172 attendees—including architects, landscape architects, engineers, and planners—an opportunity to discuss specific design scenarios through a resilience-thinking lens. The summit’s planning task force was comprised of multi-disciplinary professionals and thought-leaders, and their diversity of perspectives produced a dynamic and thought-provoking program.
