The 2012 AIA National Convention theme that “Design Connects” gives me an appreciation of the power this strong statement evokes. Kicking off the convention, our Chapter hosted a welcome reception for the Region of the Virginias on the rooftop of Eventide restaurant. With over 100 attending it was a great way to meet new friends and catch up with old ones before making your way through the over 18,000 architects who made the DC Metropolitan area their destination.

Our own Virginia native, Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA, was elected as AIA’s First Vice President and President Elect. Thanks to all our Chapter delegates who took time out of their busy schedules to participate in voting for officers and by-law changes. Coordination and collaboration with AIA|DC, the host chapter, resulted in AIA NOVA contributing volunteers and organizing well attended tours. The exhibit hall showcased new products from manufacturers in an ocean of booths and featured educational sessions filled to overflow capacity.

Thursday’s general session included a presentation by the renowned author David McCullough who reiterated that throughout history great things are never done alone, but always a joint effort. Presented with the AIA’s Gold Medal during Friday’s session, Steven Holl, FAIA, offered that “architecture is collaboration.” Each session was preceded by a video with a piece on the Flight 93 memorial on Thursday and the rebuilding of the Pentagon on Friday.

The most moving event of the convention was the final general session on Saturday entitled Architects for Healing. A medal ceremony recognized the architects who have been working on projects centered on the devastating events of 9/11 for their efforts in helping a nation heal and hopefully move on from the negative effects of such an event. Robert Ivy, FAIA starting by telling the story of his experience living in Manhattan and sharing what he wrote down the next morning. This set the stage for each of the architects to share their personal perspective and memories of that day and the subsequent meaning they found in these projects. I remember exactly where I was on 395 going to a client meeting in Arlington when, after hearing about the second plane, I heard the plane hit and then saw smoke coming from the direction of the Pentagon.

Daniel Libeskind, AIA found meaning in his involvement in the “ground zero” master plan having finished his Jewish Museum in Berlin, which opened on September 11, 2001. The museum explicitly presents and integrates the Holocaust for the first time in postwar Germany and, based on this experience, Libeskind found a way to work towards healing in the 9/11 project. David Childs, FAIA recounted the story of seeing paper falling from the sky from his office high rise window as he moved over to an

We are extremely proud to announce that James Peter Clark, FAIA was formally welcomed into the College of Fellows at Thursday’s Investiture Ceremony, held at the National Cathedral. Gregory Palermo, FAIA, Chair of the 2012 Jury of Fellows, recognized Jim’s accomplishments by noting, “his leadership has created programs that empower collaborative connections which harness and direct collective knowledge and talents of architects, students, and institutions to inspire awareness, creativity, education and excellence.” Jim, a Principal at MTFA Architecture in Arlington, served as Chapter President in 2005 and is the Immediate-Past President of Virginia Society. You can read more about Jim’s

elevation to fellowship in our March/April newsletter: http://www.aianova.org/pdf/newsletters/Mar_Apr_2012.pdf.

Congratulations to Jim and to David Thomas Haresign, FAIA and Stephen J. Vanze, FAIA, both unassigned members of AIA Northern Virginia.

The celebrations continued as we applauded Daniel J. Feil, FAIA, Executive Architect on the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission and Past President of AIA Northern Virginia, as he was formally awarded the prestigious Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture at the National Honors and Awards Celebration. This award honors those who foster excellence in public architecture, and Dan has worked on several of the most significant public projects in our nation’s capital and with some of the leading architects in the world, including Frank Gehry, FAIA on the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial, Cesar Pelli, FAIA on the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Rafael Vinoly, FAIA on the Kennedy Center. Dan’s achievements were highlighted in an article in our January/February newsletter: http://www.aianova.org/pdf/newsletters/Jan_Feb_2012.pdf.

David Jameson, FAIA was also recognized at the Honors and Awards Celebration, where he received an Institute Honor Award for Interior Architecture for his Record House Revisited in Owings Mill, Maryland, winner of a 2010 AIA Northern Virginia Design Award of Excellence. Working with a house that was featured in the 1969 Record Houses issue of Architectural Record, the jury noted that the project was “an excellent example of new work within a significant mid-century modern

structure, the interventions appear to reinforce the original design concept…and accentuates the overall spirit of the house.” David’s project was featured in our March/April newsletter: http://www.aianova.org/pdf/newsletters/Mar_Apr_2012.pdf.

Also honored at Convention were Robert M. Gurney, FAIA with an AIA Housing Award for Hampden Lane House, featured in this issue, and Virginia Tech with an Institute Honor Award for Architecture for LUMENHAUS, the university’s solar house which won the international Solar Decathlon Competition in 2010. This is the first time an AIA Award for Architecture has been given to a university team.

Congratulations, as well, to Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA, AIA Blue Ridge Chapter, who was elected as the AIA’s 2013 First Vice President/2014 President. Helene is only the third AIA president elected from Virginia, and the fourth woman, since 1857.

The 2012 Convention closed with a moving tribute to the architects involved in post-9/11 memorials and rebuilding in New York City, at the Pentagon and at the Shanksville site. Architects of Healing: Honoring Architects Who Helped Heal the Nation focused on personal stories of seven architects - Michael Arad, AIA; Santiago Calatrava, FAIA; David Childs, FAIA; Robert Davidson, FAIA; Steven Davis, FAIA; Craig Dykers, AIA and Daniel Libeskind, AIA - and recognized 15 architects who played major roles in rebuilding the three sites with the presentation of commemorative gold medallions. In recognition of all the countless architects who contributed to these projects, the AIA New York and AIA Northern Virginia Chapter Presidents were asked to symbolically accept gold medallions on behalf of all these architects. Our Chapter President, William T. Brown, AIA, was honored to accept the medal and it will be proudly displayed at the Chapter House.

intern’s desk who was pointing at the large fiery hole in the side of Tower 1. He spoke of what it means to be American, enjoy freedom and that through these projects we will not allow our way of life to be dimensioned.

Each architect was then presented with a specially minted medal commemorating this work of architecture as a healing agent. To further commemorate the first responding architects, both the New York City Chapter and the Northern Virginia Chapter were presented with one of the medals to be displayed at our Chapter Houses in recognition of those who helped in the immediate area of the building destruction.

Andy Warhol said everyone gets 15 minutes of fame and standing on the stage next to Santiago Calatrava, FAIA and the rest of these architects, I realized I was representing our Chapter within the context of something that has defined our time. The most important and powerful concept is that not only does design connect but it can be healing.

Thank you to everyone who made our Chapter convention tours so successful!

Young Professionals Trivia Night Recap

On April 24, young architects, contractors and engineers gathered for an evening of food, fun and inter-disciplinary networking. The inaugural Young Professionals Trivia Night was sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of DC, Young Contractors Forum, AIA NOVA’s Young Architects Forum, the Society of Military Engineers and the ASHRAE Northern Virginia Post.

Over 80 professionals flexed their trivia muscles at the Capital Lounge DC for a light hearted night of socializing. Trivia groups were divided amongst disciplines, so interaction between architects, contractors and engineers was guaranteed. The intent of the evening was to connect colleagues and lay the foundations for building career-long relationships. We hope future events will continue bringing together professionals across the construction industry.

The event organizers would like to thank all event sponsors - Clark Construction, Hensel Phelps Construction Company, Grunley Construction and Kiewit - for their generous support. AIA NOVA would also like to thank Aimee Fogarty for coordinating this successful evening on behalf of YAF.

Robert M. Gurney, FAIA Receives Housing Awardcontinued from page 1

was also honored with a 2011 AIA Northern Virginia Design Award.

Edgemoore is an affluent neighborhood with mature trees and gardens within walking distance of downtown Bethesda. Too often lately, many of the perfectly scaled houses inhabiting this neighborhood are being torn down and replaced with Craftsman style houses on steroids and pseudo colonials far too large for their lots. Most of these new houses are built to the maximum size allowed by the zoning ordinances with little regard for the scale of adjacent structures. Sites are rendered treeless, leaving

little or no green space.

The client for this project was a young, forward thinking entrepreneur with no desire for a nostalgic or revivalist style house. He desired a house that was efficient with a minimal footprint, leaving the majority of the lot

unoccupied by building and hardscape. The close proximity to a more urban downtown Bethesda warranted a house designed with closer ties to an urban area than to the rural countryside that once informed the design of houses built in Edgemoore.

After much deliberation, it was decided to remove an existing, inefficient structure and replace it with a new one. The new house occupies one third less area than the original structure and is sited to maximize green area on the property. Designed as a cube, the new house is approximately 2200 square feet with no unused or underutilized spaces. The flat roof provides an additional 1100 square feet of outdoor living space with views of treetops and the downtown Bethesda skyline.

Fenestration in the ground faced block walls, composed of varying sized rectangular and square openings, is arranged to optimize views to the green spaces while minimizing views of adjacent houses in close proximity. A series of landscape walls orchestrate the relationship between the street, required parking court and house. Interior spaces are open and light filled with crisp detailing. Walnut flooring provides a rich base for white walls and millwork, designed in juxtaposition to the charcoal gray exterior walls.

This house represents a deliberate departure in both the thought process and the realization of current building trends in the neighborhood. Instead of building a large house with pretentious ties to the rural past, this new house is smaller with a stronger relationship to the modern, urban area that Bethesda has become. The house is intended to be more site sensitive, environmentally conscious, and to provide comfortable, efficient living spaces.

360 Mentoringby Sonia R. Jarboe, Associate AIAWomen in Architecture Committee Chair

Mentoring is a key part of our architectural careers. We experience it first early on in school, learning from and teaching our fellow studio mates, and it takes on an even more important role as we enter the workforce. Throughout our architectural careers, we are mentee and mentor. That is the concept behind 360 Mentoring, organized as a joint venture by AIA Northern Virginia’s Young Architects Forum, Women in Architecture, Schools Connections and Fellows committees.

In March, 36 participants met at Little in Arlington for the first 360 Mentoring group meeting. After a presentation by Mary P. Cox, FAIA on the importance of mentoring, the participants were divided into 6 mentoring groups, each with members of varying experience levels, but clustered geographically to make meeting a bit easier. These groups committed to meet monthly throughout the year-long program. In addition, the groups come back together again in a larger forum three times a year.

On May 31 the second general session was held, again at Little. Carolyn Rickard-Brideau, AIA, started the evening with a presentation on generational differences. Then everyone was divided into groups based on experience level to discuss working with those of differing levels of experience. Understanding that colleagues work and learn in different ways, the goal of this exercise was to investigate how to build on our differences to

better work together. Participants were asked to list the pros and cons of working with colleagues from different generations and to share ideas on how to improve these relationships. The following notes are highlights taken from those discussions.

1. Understanding interns’ professional experience and knowledge is the biggest challenge for more seasoned colleagues, but the enthusiasm and passion for architecture and the fresh perspective interns bring to the office far outweigh any of the challenges. Interns possess varied and valuable computer skills that the more experienced generations admire and want them to share within the office.

2. To seasoned professionals, sometimes the over-confidence of young architects seems to be a challenge, but also a strength. Their ability to work independently is an asset to any office or project team. Sharing many of the same computer skills and professional experiences can help bridge the gap between interns and the other generations in the office.

3. Project managers have a wealth of knowledge in materials, practice and design; but this knowledge doesn’t always get passed down to the next generation. Younger professionals look to project managers to share their knowledge and teach them how to determine and focus on the important items.

4. The seasoned architects’ ability to communicate with clients is envied by all. Viewed as intimidating by the younger professionals in particular, everyone wants to learn the keys to

YAF Corner

The Young Architects Forum is proud to have a place where our members can showcase their work. One of the charges of the YAF is to help emerging professionals develop their career, and this new feature will give our members a chance to get their work published as well as give them the experience of writing a press release for their work.

This is an open call for emerging professionals to submit projects where they played a key role in the project team and in which they are proud of their work.

Projects may be of any size, developed independently or as part of a team, built or unbuilt, an employer’s project or your own, and the submitter must be an AIA Northern Virginia member who is either not licensed or has less been licensed for less than 10 years. Please submit a 200-word description of the project and your role in its development along with a minimum of 3 separate publishable image files at least 300 dpi, including appropriate photo credits. Email your submission to [email protected]. Your project will be placed in a queue for publication and AIA NOVA reserves the right to edit your submission for length.

We hope to bring this to you as a regular feature. Here you will find the first submitted project.

L’Enfant Plaza Post Office LobbyWashington, DCProject by: Gauthier, Alvarado & Associates (GAA)Submitted by: Oussama Souadi, Associate AIA

Gauthier, Alvarado & Associates was commissioned to design the new retail lobby at L’Enfant Plaza Promenade, which is currently undergoing a $40 million renovation and expansion effort lead by the JBG companies.

The design of the space is a product of collaboration between the GAA design team lead by Oussama Souadi, Associate AIA, the USPS Retail Division and USPS Facilities Division. The realized project is an atypical USPS design based on a shopping patterns study produced by the USPS.

The design subtly guides the customer through various spaces organized by the degree of service desired. The red striped angular ceiling protrudes into the public promenade to lead customers to the full service counters within, while simultaneously offering self-service pack & ship and retail shopping options along the way. The end result is an architecture which simplifies the shopping experience.

Gauthier, Alvarado & Associates (GAA) is a multi-disciplined architecture and engineering firm in Falls Church. The firm has provided integrated whole-building design services to a client-base focused on the public sector since 1975.

Design Awards Galacontinued from page 1

The awards presentation itself took place in the Kogod Cradle, a technically sophisticated oval theater, where our jury, consisting of 5 talented professionals from the Los Angeles area, bestowed 16 awards to local firms out of 116 total entries in this year’s program. Many of the firms being honored with awards accepted the Design Awards Committee’s request to present their winning projects in a brief PK format to their peers in attendance. The night concluded with spirited discussions of the winning projects over dessert in the Molly Smith Study. A good time was had by all in attendance, and we hope that you will consider participating in next year’s Design Awards Program!

Congratulations to all our winning firms!

All in the Same Boat

2012 Interschool Design CompetitionComing to the National Building Museum Sunday, September 23 - Monday, September 24

We often think formally of an edge as some physical element that separates two different conditions, such as “inside vs. outside” or “man-made vs. natural.” In this design charrette coming in September, however, students are being asked to consider the edge, not as separation, but as threshold. Not as a divider, but as a connector.

While the specific program for this year’s design competition relates to a vital mode of transportation in our metropolitan

area, students will explore notions of boundary and permeability and the balance between the intimacy of daily life and the scale required for public gathering. The goal is for students to engage in a typological adaptability, letting the program morph as they explore the larger notions of thresholds and the ambiguities of life at the margins. It is also intended that they will discover the expanded landscapes inherent in the design disciplines today.

Consider attending this year’s design competition, to see and hear how 48 students from six area university programs collaborate, explore and resolve an urban design challenge. Each team of four students will take command of the floor of the National Building Museum and have the entire day to present a submission entry.

The planning committee for the 2011 competition would again like to sincerely thank the following sponsors for making last year’s events a great success:

Over the past two decades, the three Washington area chapters of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Washington Architectural Foundation, and the National Building Museum have collaborated to organize the annual Interschool Design Competition. These competitions have helped open doors for students to the various local architectural curriculums and the architectural profession. Participants in this design competition are students at all levels enrolled in the area’s university architecture programs.

2030 Commitment Report - Managing the Metricsby Jon Penndorf, AIA, LEED BD+CProject Manager for Perkins+Will

This past May I had the opportunity to attend the Living Futures Conference, organized by the Living Futures Institute and the Cascadia Green Building Council. For three days in Portland, Oregon, hundreds of architects, contractors, engineers, building owners and thought leaders gathered to talk about taking green building further than code mandates and the “low hanging fruit” of rating systems. The future of sustainability is a living one – buildings that generate their own energy, use only the water that falls on their sites and that still maintain a high level of functionality and beauty. There are currently only three buildings in the United States certified as “Living” through the Living Futures Institute, with another three achieving partial certification. The standards for certification are simple and straightforward yet challenging to achieve. How many of your recent buildings are off the electrical grid? What are the barriers to architects achieving Living Building certification?

Certainly the AIA’s 2030 Commitment offers progressive steps toward achieving buildings that are carbon neutral and net-zero (or net-positive) energy consumers. The message to members and the general public is clear: the AIA is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and supports the design and construction of energy efficient structures. We have tools to measure our performance and goals for increased efficiency each year spanning to 2030, the targeted year of carbon neutrality.

But the second year’s results of the 2030 Commitment were released at the AIA National Convention in May, and we as an industry and as an institute are falling short of our own goals. While over 100 architecture firms have signed on to the Commitment, only 12.8% of the reported gross area of architecture design work is meeting the current goal of 60% reduction in GHG emissions, up just .7% from 2010. The average lighting power density for interiors projects was reduced by 21%; a 25% reduction was set as a goal for the year.

While we may not be hitting our current energy reduction targets, the 2011 Commitment report does indicate we are getting better at tracking our progress and at understanding our own metrics. One hundred and four firms submitted reports on energy use last year, representing an 86% increase in participation over 2010. The report also indicates that 57% of reported projects (by gross area) are using energy models to predict energy consumption which was relatively consistent from 2010. The report shows an increase in actual energy use data collection, which may be the most optimistic statistic in the document – 45% of reported projects (by gross area) have methods in place for collecting usage data after construction. Projects collecting data post occupancy can assist designers in validating their models and design strategies as well as provide for lessons learned about what strategies are more effective than others in achieving energy and GHG reductions.

Perhaps those who have voluntarily signed up for the 2030 Commitment are pioneers. Perhaps they are willing to take the risk (and the heat from naysayers) of falling short in these early years of reporting. Or perhaps we needed a few years to figure out how to even report the information that is pertinent to our metrics. Knowing there are just a handful of buildings that have earned “Living” certification from the Living Futures Institute may make the second year’s reporting more tolerable. Net zero is a challenge. The AIA has given us another 18 years to figure it out.

The full 2030 Commitment 2011 report can be downloaded from the AIA website at www.aia.org/about/initiatives/.

On the Boards

Gatehouse Medical BuildingFairfax, VirginiaPowers Brown Architecture

The Gatehouse Medical office building sits at the intersection of Gatehouse Road and Gallows Road, Merrifield, Fairfax, Virginia.

The client, an audiologist by practice, wanted a building that “spoke” of his work. The solution involved pursuit of a strategy that capitalizes on the nexus between a formal response to a very tight and geometrically challenged site and a narrative approach to the skin of the building.

The massing of the project is a relatively efficient office “box” slid over a socle. The base responds to the site geometry and resolves the poche into reasonable parking stalls. The box slides west over the base creating covered area and aligns with the major feeder road geometry - inviting approach and establishing a long distance presence. A curtain wall glass panel signals the office use and is expressed as the hollowed out portion of a square tube - perhaps a metaphorical ear canal as observed by the client. The base function is a retail space in which hearing equipment is to be sold while the box above will accommodate the audiologist and several complimentary tenants.

The shear between the base and top creates a green roof opportunity - neatly resolving an impervious coverage issue, and is answered by an occupiable garden roof atop the box, open to all tenants.

The skin of the building is inspired by a Doppler Effect wave, a physical manifestation of sound that grounds the building in its intended use, abstract enough not to require a literal reading.
