Choosing a secondary school is a difficult choice to make for everyone,

both Italian and foreign students.

But it can be even more difficult for you, who come from foreign

countries: it is difficult because you don’t know the Italian

language very well, or perhaps not at all, but also because the

Italian school system is very different from the one in your country.

This booklet, with the translation into the languages of the

different countries of origin, will help you because it gives useful

information on Liceo “B. Russell”: it can guide you in choosing the best

course of study for your needs and your hopes for the future.

La scelta dopo i 14 anni In Italia ogni ragazzo ha l'obbligo di frequentare la scuola per dieci anni fino ad almeno 16 anni. Dopo la scuola secondaria di primo grado (la scuola media), ultimata se tutto è regolare a 14 anni, deve quindi iscriversi alla scuola superiore o alla formazione professionale (vedi allegati). L'obbligo riguarda anche gli studenti di madrelingua non italiana, come te, regolari o irregolari, con o senza il permesso di soggiorno. Puoi iscriverti ad una scuola superiore anche se sei arrivato in Italia da poco e non hai il diploma di scuola media italiana. Basta che tu abbia dai 14 ai 16 anni e un titolo che dichiari che hai frequentato nel tuo paese di origine almeno 8 anni di scuola. Dai 16 anni, se non hai il diploma di scuola media italiana, puoi

iscriverti alla scuola superiore, se hai frequentato almeno 8 anni di scuola certificati nel tuo paese;

frequentare un corso presso un C. T. P. (centro territoriale permanente) se vuoi imparare l'italiano e ottenere il diploma di scuola media;

iscriverti ad un corso di istruzione e formazione professionale.

Il motivo di una scelta Scegliere la scuola da frequentare è fare una scelta importante. Per capire quale scuola sia più adatta a te devi riconoscere i tuoi interessi, le tue inclinazioni e pensare al lavoro che vuoi fare da grande. Noi ti diamo le informazioni che ti servono. Your choice after the age of 14 In Italy, school attendance is compulsory for all children for ten years, until the age of 16 at least. After leaving lower secondary school (middle school), at the age of 14 if successfully completed, children have to enrol in secondary school or in a vocational school (upper secondary education) (see annexes). School attendance is compulsory until the age of 16 also for children who, like you, are non-native speakers of Italian, regular or irregular, with or without residence permit. You can enrol in a secondary school even if you haven’t been in Italy for long and you do not have a diploma of the Italian middle school. You only need to be between the ages of 14 and 16 and have a document stating that you have attended school in your native country for at least 8 years. After the age of 16, if you do not have the diploma of the Italian middle school, you can

enrol in secondary school if you have attended school for at least 8 years in your home country;

attend a course at a C.T.P. (permanent local centre) if you want to learn Italian and obtain the middle school diploma;

enrol in a course of vocational education and training.

una in via Trento. L'Istituto ha 6 corsi:

1. Liceo classico; 2. Liceo scientifico; 3. Liceo scientifico - opzione scienze applicate; 4. Liceo linguistico; 5. Liceo delle scienze umane; 6. Liceo delle scienze umane – economico sociale.

How Liceo Russell is organised

Liceo Russell (Cles) has got 2 school buildings:

one is in via IV Novembre (where you can find the Head Teacher’s office and the school administration office)

the other one is in via Trento.

The school offers 6 courses of study:

1. A course specialising in classical studies; 2. A course specialising in scientific studies; 3. A course specialising in scientific studies – applied sciences option; 4. A course specialising in foreign languages; 5. A course specialising in human sciences; 6. A course specialising in human sciences – social and economic studies.

Tutti i corsi durano 5 anni e si concludono con un “esame di stato”. Gli alunni che superano l’esame ottengono un “diploma”. Dopo il diploma si può iniziare a lavorare oppure proseguire gli studi all' Università. In ogni corso ci sono materie obbligatorie che danno una preparazione di base e materie di indirizzo a seconda del corso che si sceglie. Le materie comuni a tutti i corsi sono: lingua e cultura italiana, storia, geografia, filosofia (dal terzo anno), storia dell'arte, matematica, fisica, scienze naturali, scienze motorie, religione o attività alternative. Almeno una lingua straniera- l'inglese- è studiata per tutti e 5 gli anni, mentre una lingua- il tedesco- è studiata solo al biennio, con la possibilità per chi lo vuole di continuare a studiarla facoltativamente anche nel triennio. Nel Liceo classico le materie di indirizzo sono la lingua e la letteratura greca e latina. Nel Liceo scientifico le materie di indirizzo sono la matematica, le scienze e la fisica. Nell'opzione scienze applicate l'insegnamento del latino è sostituito dai laboratori. Nel Liceo Linguistico le materie di indirizzo sono le lingue straniere (almeno tre). Nel Liceo delle Scienze umane le materie di indirizzo sono l'antropologia, la psicologia, la sociologia e la pedagogia, mentre nel Liceo delle Scienze umane con opzione giuridico-economica oltre all'antropologia, la psicologia e la sociologia, sono previste il diritto e l'economia.

Come scegliere il CORSO LICEALE

Nella scelta del CORSO LICEALE adatto a te fai molta attenzione alle materie specifiche e con più ore (sono in indicate in grassetto).

All courses last 5 years, at the end of which there is a final “state exam”. The students who pass the exam are awarded a “diploma”. After the diploma, students can either go to work or pursue their studies at university. In each course there are compulsory subjects, which provide for basic education, and specialising subjects, depending on the course of study you choose. The subjects that are taught in all courses are: Italian Language and Literature, History, Geography, Philosophy (starting from Year 3), History of Art, Mathematics, Physics, Natural Sciences, Physical Education and Sports Science, Religious Education or alternative activities. At least one foreign language - English - is studied throughout the 5 years, while another foreign language - German - is studied only in the first 2 years, however, students are given the opportunity to choose it as an optional subject in Year 3 and pursue its study until the final year, if they wish.

The main subjects of the Course specialising in classical studies are Greek and Latin Language and Literature. The main subjects of the Course specialising in scientific studies are Mathematics, Science and Physics. In the course with the option in applied sciences, the teaching of Latin is replaced by laboratory activities. The main subjects of the Course specialising in foreign languages are Foreign Languages (at least three). The main subjects of the Course specialising in human sciences are Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology and Pedagogy while the main subjects of the Course with the option in law and economic studies are Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Law and Economics.

How to choose your COURSE OF STUDY While choosing the COURSE OF STUDY which is most suitable for you, consider carefully the specific subjects in the curriculum of the course and those which have more hours in the weekly timetable (written in bold type).

Accoglienza Quando vieni nella nostra scuola, sei accolto dalla Dirigente, dai docenti e dagli alunni che ti fanno conoscere l'ambiente e la sua organizzazione. Se non parli ancora bene l'italiano, non ti preoccupare. Al Liceo Russell ci sono degli insegnanti che ti aiutano ad impararlo e ti guidano nello studio. Nel primo periodo viene fatto un programma solo per te che

valorizza quello che hai imparato nella scuola che hai frequentato prima di arrivare in Italia;

ti sostiene nel recuperare quello che serve e che nella scuola precedente non hai studiato;

sospende alcune discipline che in questa fase possono esserti difficili;

ti dà gli strumenti e i materiali che ti sono utili per imparare la lingua.

E' attivo uno sportello per te e i tuoi genitori, dove puoi chiedere aiuti e consigli. Educazione alla salute e all’ambiente Nella nostra scuola c'è una psicologa: con lei puoi parlare quando vuoi, lei ti ascolta, ti fa capire e ti accompagna nell'affrontare i problemi. Nella nostra scuola puoi fare tanti sport (Progetto Sport). Puoi imparare a conoscere la natura e a rispettare l'ambiente (Progetto Salute ed educazione ambientale).

How we take care of you

Welcome and Reception When you come to our school, you are welcomed by the Head Teacher, by teachers and students who help you get to know the school environment and its organization. Do not worry if you don’t speak Italian very well yet. At Liceo Russell there are teachers who will help you learn it and guide you through your studies. At the beginning, you will follow an individual programme, especially designed for you, which

values what you have learnt in the school you went to before coming to Italy;

assists you in any remedial work you might need to do and helps you with subjects you haven’t studied before;

suspends some of the subjects which you might find difficult at this stage;

provides you with useful resources and materials to learn the language.

There is an assistance service for you and your parents, which you can contact to ask for help and advice.

Health and environmental education In our school there is a psychologist: you can talk to her whenever you want, she will listen to you, help you understand and support you in coping with any problem you might encounter. At our school you can do many sports (Sports Project). You can earn about the environment and how to respect it (Health and Environmental Education Project).

Orientamento Puoi incontrare docenti universitari e professionisti, esperti, fare stage durante il periodo scolastico in aziende locali e non, visitare ambienti di lavoro e facoltà universitarie. Apprendimento e successo formativo Al pomeriggio gli insegnanti ti aiutano a chiarire dubbi e problemi (sportelli). La scuola rimane aperta tutto il giorno: puoi studiare nelle aule di informatica e di lingue sotto il controllo degli insegnanti in servizio.

Careers education and guidance You can meet university professors and professionals, experts, take part in work placement experiences during the school year in local and non-local companies, visit work places and universities.

Learning and successful educational attainment In the afternoon, there are teachers who can help you clarify any doubt and cope with any difficulty you might come across in your studies (afternoon revision classes). The school is open all day: you can study in the IT and language laboratories supervised by the teachers on duty.

Le valutazioni

Le valutazioni sono espresse in numeri che vanno dal 4 (minimo) al 10 (massimo). Sono espresse sia su prove orali che scritte.

A Novembre ricevi un primo documento di valutazione (pagellino): da lì puoi capire se il liceo va bene per te o decidere di andare in un'altra scuola;

Se non hai capito bene qualche cosa, gli insegnanti a scuola ti aiutano (corsi di recupero);

Se sei bravo, puoi imparare tante cose nuove che ti interessano (corsi di potenziamento);

a Marzo ricevi un altro documento di valutazione (pagellino);

a Gennaio e a Giugno ricevi la pagella con i voti di tutte le materie;

se nella pagella di Giugno ci sono dei voti negativi a Settembre fai i corsi di recupero con esame finale;

tu e la tua famiglia potete vedere voti e assenze sul registro elettronico di classe (sito www.liceorussell.eu).

Assessment

Assessment is expressed in a scale of numbers ranging from 4 (the lowest)

to 10 (the highest). This grading system is applied both to written tests and to oral tests.

In November you will receive your first mid-term school report: you can understand from the results you have achieved so far if the liceo is the right school for you or else decide to go to another school;

If there is anything you didn’t understand, the teachers will help you (revision classes);

If you are doing well, you can learn many new things that interest you (classes of in-depth study of an area of interest);

In March you will receive your second mid-term school report;

In January and in June you will receive the end-of-term school report with marks in all the subjects;

If in the final school report of June there are negative marks, in September you will have to follow revision courses with a final exam;

You and your family can look at your marks and absences on the on-line class register (site: www.liceorussell.eu).

Per i migliori Se sei molto bravo in qualche materia, puoi partecipare alle olimpiadi di matematica o di filosofia, puoi partecipare a concorsi e a progetti. Internazionalizzazione dell’insegnamento Nella nostra scuola puoi fare la certificazione delle tue competenze linguistiche e informatiche (PET, FCE, ECDL). For the best students If you are particularly good at some subjects, you can take part in the Olympic Games of Mathematics or Philosophy, you can participate in competitions and projects. Internationalization of teaching At our school you can take internationally-recognized exams to get a certificate attesting the competences in foreign languages and Information Technology that you have acquired (PET, FCE, ECDL). You can go abroad to learn a language (study trips), you can get to know other schools around Europe and the world. Some of the subjects can be taught in a foreign language. Music Instrument At our school you can learn to play the guitar, the flute, the drums, the piano or the violin. In attesa del documento i genitori possono dichiarare o autocertificano la classe ed il tipo di scuola frequentata nel Paese d'origine. Attenzione! Se sei arrivato da poco in Italia, non perdere tempo! Iscriviti e vai a scuola subito! Puoi farlo anche se le lezioni sono già iniziate. Se non hai ancora tutti i documenti, puoi comunque iscriverti e andare a scuola. Se non hai ancora 18 anni puoi iscriverti anche senza il permesso di soggiorno. I libri di testo Per i primi due anni di ogni corso liceale la scuola fornisce gratuitamente i libri di testo. Dal terzo anno in poi gli studenti devono provvedere autonomamente all'acquisto. In caso di bisogno la scuola su richiesta documentata dà un contributo.

If you have just arrived in Italy, do not waste your time! Enrol and go to school straight away! You can do that even if school has already started. If you still haven’t got all your documents, you can enrol and go to school in any case. If you are not 18 yet, you can enrol even without a residence permit. Textbooks For the first two years of each course of study, the textbooks you need are provided by the school, without charge. From the third year on, students have to buy their own textbooks. If need be, and upon documented request, the school provides financial help.
