The A Grade has pulled off one of the club's gutsiest wins in recent time, defeating a

star-studded Grange outfit by 6 runs. Playing without star all-rounder Adam Ozolins

and strike bowler Chris Shaw, the Hunters put together a remarkable

team performance to defend their modest total of 144, bowling Grange out for 138

with only a few overs to spare. Charlie Giles led the bowlers with 4 superb wickets,

ably backed by skipper MJ Loveder (2 wickets) and youngster Chris "Chiller" Hill (2

wickets). Chiller bowled an outstanding spell in his first A grade game, taking 2/12

from 10 overs including the vital wicket of former Australian player Brad Young. Craig

Dollman also bowled brilliantly and was unlucky to go wicketless after 21 overs that

conceded only 32 runs. While the fielding and intensity was good all day, luck was

certainly on the Hunters side with two run outs and a freakish catch by Portlock in

the slips helping to turn the game their way. In week one Porters led the batting with

51, backed up by Jones with 26.

The B’s have continued on their merry way, still undefeated after 5 rounds. The

round 4 clash with Grange was washed out with the Hunters in a strong position,

Grange needing 47 runs with 4 wickets in hand. Con Karatevillis took 4/18.

The C’s and D’s have played very little cricket of late with heat and rain forcing their

past 3 weeks to be washed out. Both sides will be looking for big performances in

Round 6 before the Christmas Break.

THE HUNTER HAS....... A RASPBERRY WITH PORTERS

Well Porters, most blokes around the club know that you don’t drink

alcohol and that you claim to be allergic, but I think now is the time to

reveal the real reason behind you becoming a teetotaller.

Well, it started when I was 15 and had my first beer at a party. I’d told

my old boy there would be no grog available, and when I staggered

home at 10:30pm slurring and incoherent, the old boy was not impressed. Whilst hung over the next

day, swearing to myself that I would never touch alcohol again, Dad saw an opportunity to keep me

away from the amber fluid, and bet me $10000 that I would drink again before I turned 50. I’ve only

got another 28 years to go to win that bet.

Well as we are writing this, you are top of the A grade batting aggregate. What have you changed

in your game that has seen you go from a fringe player to our in-form opening batsman?

Well, I have a bet going that I will be leading run-scorer at Christmas. I checked the form of the other

AHOS batsmen against the sides we were facing in the first 6 rounds of this year, analysed the

success of openers on the ovals we would be playing on, studied the weather patterns for October

and November and with the inside information I had on Oz being unavailable for 2 games I came to

the conclusion that I was a 35/10 chance to be leading after 6 innings. The motivation to win the bet,

and the fact that I will can tell each incoming batsman the bowler is sending down massive

outswingers when they are really swinging in, or can run out any batsman who is starting to look

good, means I am sitting pretty to collect there as well.

So, as I suspected, gambling plays a big part in your life. What is one of the easiest bets you’ve ever

won?

I bet some mates at high school I could live on Macca’s and Cold Rock for a month. Easiest money I

ever made!

And the worst bet you’ve made?

In a game against Pulteney a few years back, I bet Ozzy that I could eat more Oreos than him during a

5 over period after the tea-break. I lost by two, 30 to 28, and not only lost the bet, but lost my pride

and dignity that day – it was a sad moment.

You’ve even been known to play the bookmaker on occasions, what is one of the weirdest bets you

have on your books at the moment?

A mate of mine got excited when I said that the odds of the world ending in 2012 (like the new movie

that is out) were a million to one. He put a dollar on it with me, but the joke’s on him – if the world

ends, how will he collect? That dollar is mine. Might put it in the pokies......

We really should talk about cricket for a bit, who is your

favourite all time player?

I’m seeing a bit of a pattern here, so to finish off Porters,

can you give us some odds for the following bets:

JC to snag a girlfriend at some point during 2010 - That’s a

long shot, 50/1.

MJ to propose to Peta during 2010 - Even longer – 100/1.

Mal getting fired for participating in MOvember again - Good odds there, I’d say 4/1.

AHS top oval and nets still have ten tonnes of visible sand at the start of next season - It has

improved, but Volky does love his sand – 25/10.

Porters loses $300 at the next AHOSCC “Night at the Races” - That’s a sure thing – 11/10.

CAPTAINS REPORTS – Rounds 3 - 5 A Grade – Matt ‘MJ’ Loveder Round 3 against SPOC which was a battle between last year’s grand finalist proved that 6 months is a long time in cricket! Batting first, we made 173 with starts from Rig, Tilly and Porters, but unfortunately our batting again let us down. Whilst there were signs of improvement, our top six batsman need to realize that time in the middle and working in partnerships is vital to making big scores! With a bowler short, SPOC chased the runs down on what was a long day in the field. With Gilesy and Dolly bowling for much of the day, we had tough day, but definitely a character building one. With 3 losses straight, our season was appearing to be a heartbreaking one. Round 4 at Grange, we again batted first with a similar performance with the bat as with SPOC game. Too many starts, with only Porters sticking it out and making a well earned 50. We made 144 at close of play in a reduced over game because of the heat. Week two of the game will hopefully prove to be our season’s turning point! With a very frank and honest chat with the boys before the game, all responded showing great character. We bowled Grange out for 138 winning the game by 6 runs. Special note must be given to Gilesy for taking 4 wickets and young medium pacer Chris Hill and Dolly each taking two. As much as it pains me to say, JC created one of the best run outs I have even seen, with a direct hit from the boundary from 60 metres away! For a team without it stalwarts, the boys pulled off one of our clubs greatest victories. I hope the wins instills on them that there is nothing that can’t be achieved when we are all pulling in the same direction! On a personal note, I was proud to lead the boys that day, a win which I am sure will stay with me for many years to come. With round 5 being a washout, we sit 9

th on the ladder, with a big win expected at Hope

Valley leading into Christmas.

B Grade – Craig ‘Sugar’ Ridley

The round 3 game against SPOC saw a great team effort post a win away from home. SPOC batted first on a low deck and a few of their guys batted pretty well to help them post 237. It could have been much higher but excellent bowling from Chris “Chiller” Hill, Mark “Trooper” Davies and Matty “Barts” Bartel made sure we had an achievable total to chase. Chiller bowled well to take 2/35 and was rewarded with an A grade berth the following week. Trooper bowled magnificently and was unlucky not to take a wicket after bowling 18 overs for just 43 runs. But the day went to Barts who took an amazing 7/72 from 23 overs. The next week was a great team batting effort with Stokes (40), Krasnov (73), Karatevillis (70), Hooker Loveder (41*) and Ridley (121) helping AHOS to score 6/366. Special mention to Andre Kokoschko who travelled back from Melbourne by bus to help us out for this game – much appreciated! Round 4 was washed out after day 1 with the boys in a good position, needing 4 wickets for 47 runs to win after being dismissed for 97 on day one. Round 5 was completely washed out.

John Stokes Nickname: Stoker, Stokesy, Spoon, Tard, Demi Sex God from Hell (oh don't call me that), Johnny Ponks Binky Bonks (thanks mum) Batting position: Top/Middle/Lower Order Bowling Style: Right Arm Medium Pies Fielding position: I get around (like your mum) - wherever I'm needed to be hidden H.S. and B.B.: I've scored a few 80-odds but never cracked the tonne - hopefully this year, as for bowling not many for a lot of runs - i probably took a 4-for in primary school - maybe I’ll grab a Michelle this year. Career highlight: Under 17's Premiership was good and personally, um...I once hit an 8 off of the last ball of a 'Super 8's' game when we needed 8 to win. That was pretty cool, and we went on to become state champions and I was captain *blows knuckles and rubs them on shirt* Best player seen: If we're talking internationals then I've been lucky enough to see a few great performances down at Adelaide oval. One which stands out is Lara's 180. He was a handy player. Ponting's a star - shit bloke, can bat. Warne. Nothing earth shattering with those three names. Best ATCA player seen: Haven't played a lot of A grade cricket so I'll probably look at our club for this.......Suji, Gee, Wazza, Hooch and Ozzie - all superstars Best AHOS player seen: See above (not Ponting or Lara, the other one) Dream date:I've taken a shine to Rachel Finch Dream dinner party guests: Obama, Dr Karl (not from neighbours - the clever one), Will Ferrell, Tarantino and Justine from Masterchef (we need someone who can cook and she could also slot into the question above - no not Ponting or Lara) Three AHOS blokes you would not want to be stuck on a desert island with and why? Tricky one because I love each and every one of my AHOS comrades. Mal - I couldn't handle talking about Carlton forever and a day, Sporto - the stench would be horrific after a couple of minutes and.....um....Jonesy (Pres) because he's an angry old man - if you need proof of that statement watch him come and beat me up as soon as he reads this.

B Grade Report Cont. C Grade – Craig ‘Patto’ Patterson Round 3 saw a bad loss to Fulham with the only good performances going to Steve Ormond (5/35) and Craig Patterson (43). Round 4 and 5 were both washed out. A win is now desperately needed before Christmas to get the boys going for the second half of the season.

D Grade – Raffaele ‘Raf’ Tardivo An interesting season so far with 3 washouts, a forfeit and 3 wins from our 7 games. We now seem to have enough players around to ensure that there shouldn’t be any further forfeits this season.

Twenty20 Competition A great start to the T20 comp for the boys with a comfortable win against Pembroke. MJ lost the toss and we fielded first and bowled and fielded well early to have them 2/2. A good partnership got them back on track but some tight fielding helped to keep the total below 150 after looking like it could be much higher. Wazza took 2 wickets while Hooch, Charlie and MJ took one each. Tilly and Porters got the Hunters off to a great start with a 61 run partnership before Tilly was out for 20. Enter Leon Krasnov - the young fella smashed 31 in his first ever A grade game after a sensational fielding performance earlier in the day. Showing no fear, Kras smashed 3 sixes and with Porters, all but secured the win. Porters' 55 was his 2nd consecutive half century and the form A grade batsman showed rare glimpses of outright aggression in another excellent innings for the club. A great win for the boys and we will be looking to continue this confidence into the game this Saturday vs Payneham. NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL

Nearly a year since the scaffolding was first erected at the School the painting at the front has finally been completed and the scaffolding has been removed. Who says that “passing the buck” and bureaucracy does not exist within the Education Department and the Adelaide City Council - 12 months would have to be close to some form of record. Congratulations to the AHS Year 8/9 cricketers who for the 5th year in a row won the State Schools Cricket Knock Out Competition. The Five Highs was held in Brisbane last week with the boys finishing 2nd while a school U/16 team will also attended to compete in the International Southern Skies Challenge series. Congratulations to the former prefect and captain of the 2008 5 Highs winning cricket team James Craig who was taken up by the Crows at pick number 61 in the AFL draft.

AHOS BOWLING CLUB The AHOSCC is making an effort to get closer to our brothers in the AHOS Bowling Club. Many of the blokes in the bowling club are former members of the cricket club, some being amongst the founders of the Hunters back in 1978. We will be looking at some future joint functions which may help raise money for both clubs. The guys are going along well at the moment sitting 3rd in their division. Thanks to Malcolm Allen for providing a contact with the club and supplying the information above about the school.

What happened?

The young fella’s excitement

levels went into overdrive with

the site of a few lovely young

things serving behind the bar at

MJ and Hooker’s 30th. However,

while manoeuvring into a scoring

position with witty banter and

sideways glances, it was quickly

noted that these lovely lasses

were rookie-listed and JC

unfortunately had to let another

opportunity pass safely by the off

stump and through to the keeper.

Verdict?

A good opening stand from this

ever improving utility, picking up

some early runs with relaxed

conversation and scintillating

skillwork. However, when the

rookie listed status of the goal

was confirmed, our man

displayed some previously unseen

class, and aborted the mission

with the words “I’m bugging out”.

A solid grade, similar early form

will have our hero scoring a ton in

the near future.

WHO’S HOT & WHO’S NOT!

Red Hot Ice Cold Hoochy - after taking 7/30 vs. Payneham in a great spell of bowling, still makes the hot list despite the fact that during his 7th wicket celebration he nearly speared the entire slips cordon with his outstretched leg which could have done as much damage as William Wallace’s 12 foot spears depicted in the battle scenes of the classic movie Braveheart.

Doon - known for having hands of steel in the field was able to feel cold steel on his wrists making his junior coaching debut all the more comical in the lawless capital of Brisvegas!!

The husbands of Goodwood FC – apparently would have gained full benefit after a sterling performance by JC at the club’s presentation night, where he was dubbed Keanu by the GFC WAG’s. Unfortunately, our Jakey has no luck attracting the AVAILABLE women of Adelaide.

MJ - for referring to his long-term GF as a frigid, one-tonne endangered Chinese beast (Funi) and wondering why his Wang-Wang gets no outside attention (true story, we have the text message to prove it!!).

Rig – has strengthened the Hunters Bachelor Club (HBC) since moving over from Tassie. Demonstrating a powerful commitment to singledom and is providing an excellent role model for the younger members of the HBC. Has developed a recent appreciation for strenuous activity on sandy surfaces that would rival Volky’s current fetish.....

JC – nicknamed Keanu by the WAG’s of Goodwood FC, the lack of single women at premiership celebrations, the spell that the Taswegian Rig has cast over the ladies of Adelaide, underage bar staff and the fact that he no longer fits into his dress trousers after a trip to Brissy, have resulted in our boy shifting his focus to emptying pints rather than tuning the ladies so far this summer.
