ThisaccreditationhandbookwasrstpublishedbytheEngineeringCouncil in2004andsincethenhasbeenwidelyusedbyengineeringeducationproviders,individualacademicsandprofessionalengineeringinstitutions.Ithasbeenpraisedforitsclarity,itsbrevityanditsemphasisonlearningoutcomesratherthaninputs.Ithasenabledthedevelopmentofavarietyofdiverseprovision,withoutlosingsightoftherequiredskills,knowledgeandunderstandingthattomorrow’sengineerswillneed.ThecriteriaandprocessofaccreditationhavebeenreviewedinternationallyanddeemedtobeofasufcientlyhighstandardfortheEngineeringCounciltobelicensedtoawardtheEuropeanNetworkforAccreditationofEngineeringEducation’sEUR-ACElabeltoUKaccreditedengineeringprogrammes.ProgrammesthatcarrytheEUR-ACElabelarerecognisedasbeingofinternationalstandingandaligning with European qualifcations rameworks; perhaps most importantly they arerecognised as frst or second cycle degrees consistent with the Bologna process. In

anincreasinglyglobalmarketforengineeringeducation,theopportunityofhavingaEUR-ACElabelbringshugepotentialbenetsforUKprovidersofaccreditedprogrammes.

Thisupdatedversionoftheaccreditationhandbookdoesnotintroduceanychangesto the learning outcomes and it remains rooted in the UK Standard or ProessionalEngineeringCompetence(UK-SPEC).Ithasbeenupdatedtoaddressissuesarisingsince2004,toreectchangesinqualicationsframeworksandtorecognizetheestablishmentin2006oftheEngineeringAccreditationBoard(EAB).EABhasworked hard to ensure consistently applied and rigorous standards and the sharingofgoodaccreditationpracticebetweenprofessionalengineeringinstitutions,andwillcontinuetodoso.Theaccreditationhandbookcontinuestobetheframework
