The aim of this workshop is to improve stakeholders capacity and
is specifically geared towardsTechnical professionals within the
Ministries of Agriculture and IICA Country Offices, to support
the
development of competitive agribusiness and commodity value
chains. Its primary focus is on the
issues of competitiveness, value-chains and the application of
the Commodity Chain Analysis and
Dialogue for Action (CADIAC) methodology. The workshop will be
facilitated by IICAs
Agribusiness Specialists Danilo Herrero and Robert Reid. The
Value chain approach is currently one
of the processes under consideration and active promotion in
CARICOM countries for enablingdevelopment in agriculture.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, with the support
of the Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO) Project Promoting CARICOM/CARIFORUM Food
Security, funded by the
Government of Italy, will hold its a regional workshop for the
Validation of the Regional Policy for
Food and Nutrition Security in the Caribbean . In February 2007,
the Eighteenth Inter-Sessional
Meeting of the Heads of Government of CARICOM identified food
security and sustainabledevelopment as one of the main pillars of
the Regional Transformation Programme for Agriculture(RTPA). The
goal of an acceptable level of food security that is not easily
disrupted by natural andor manmade disasters was an equally
important finding in the consultative process of The Jagdeo
Initiative - A Proposal for Interventions to Alleviate the Key
Binding Constraints to the Agricultural
Sector in CARICOM Countries. The Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas
(RTC), which established the
Caribbean Community including the CARICOM Single Market and
Economy (CSME) identifies
Food and Nutrition Security (Article 56.1.b) among the goals of
the Community Agricultural Policy(CAP). The Workshop will review
the recent draft RPFNS, discuss the issues and agree on the
nature
and scope of policy actions proposed to be taken at national and
regional levels in order to
address the negative factors constraining the attainment of food
and nutrition security. The
expected results of the workshop will be: 1)Validation of the
contents of the draft policy
document: identifying gaps, omissions and flaws in the draft
document, and amendments to be
made; 2) Agreement on relationships and linkages between the
RPFNS, the CAP, the Common
Fisheries Policy, theCaribbean Cooperation in Health (CCH) and
other relevant CARICOM policies;3) Agreement on key policy actions
and programmes (and their order of priority) to move theregion
towards improved and sustainable food security within the next 5
years.

ANNOUNCEMENT REMINDER:
Please encourage participation in the UNDPs regional contest for
rural innovative projects aimed at the identification of
projects
that promote rural enterprise and innovation at the grassroots
level with the potential of replication and expansion at the
regional
level. The contest will be open to rural groups and associations
based in any of the ten (10) countries covered by CARUTA (the
OECS, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago). Great
emphasis will be given to the support of rural youth and
women initiatives. It is anticipated that the competition will
take place twice a year. The theme of the first competition will
beMicroenterprise Development, Income Generating Activity &
Innovation, focusing on Youth Rural enterprises,
Micro-creditand
Innovation and Transformation of Agriculture.
The contest is open to all types of organized or registered
groups. (e.g. community based organizations, cooperatives,
associations, etc.) that are implementing projects which address
any of the above focal areas. An application form can be
