Small Group Janet Hauser Ladies’ Monday Group The past year of study with our small group has been smaller but still a rich and transforming experience with the Word of God. Several members moved away or were unable to attend due to changes in work schedules. We began to meet in my home instead of the clubhouse to lower costs and have a cozier place to meet. We began a study on the Lord’s Prayer in September 2011. One of the most lasting effects of re-looking at this familiar and beloved prayer, was understanding better what Jesus meant when He instructed us to pray, “hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”. He didn’t mean somewhere out there in the kingdom in the outer reaches of the earth; it is in our hearts, minds and actions. His lordship in our lives means that our lives will declare His kingdom and bring Him glory daily with His help! With the arrival of this new year, all of us, with some reluctance and sadness, but also with anticipation and willingness, have agreed to join the Links small group initiative after service on Sundays. We realize, as one member said, that’ everything has a season and we need to be open to new things from God’. The basis for this group was to grow in our knowledge and understanding of His Word. We look forward to the same activity in a different format in the future. I want to give a sincere & heart-felt thank you to the lovely ladies who have journeyed with me over the past 8+ years. It has been an untold privilege to be a part of this group Small Group Kathy Lee + Penny Yue Wednesday Ladies Group This year has seen many changes for our group, and many farewells. We began 2011 by finishing off "Captivating" by John & Stasi Eldredge (one session only). Then from mid-January we were looking at Nicky Gumbel's book "The Heart of Revival". We met at Amy Udy's house in Tai Po on Thursdays for the first half of the year and the group grew with new additions including Kathy, Irene for a while when she was between jobs, and Teresa from St. Andrews joined us too. Our group grew to sometimes 8 or 9 of us. We shared struggles and joys and became good friends. We drank a lot of tea, laughed and prayed for each other. At the end of April we had a lovely day in Lo Wu and art village with Judith as our tour guide. When Pat had her accident we visited her in hospital and at her home.

Page 8: AGM Report 2011 - Shatin Anglican Church...Page 2 of 28 SHATIN CHURCH 21st ANNUAL CHURCH MEETING Sunday 11 th March, 2012 at 12:00 noon at Tsang Shiu Tim School, Wo Che A G E N D A

The summer break brought many changes to our group. We said goodbye to our good friend Judith going back to New Zealand, and also goodbye to Pat as our leader. Work and other commitments also meant that others have been unable to continue to come regularly. We felt that we wanted to still meet together when possible, even without anyone able to take on leadership of the group at this time. We changed our meetings to a more central location at Kathy’s place in Ma On Shan on a Wednesday. We have also been enjoying watching some videos from the Hillsong Women’s Colour Conferences, as well as enjoying a cup of tea and prayer time. At the moment there is a small group of 3-4 of us that meet often, with others occasionally able to join us. We don’t always meet every week, but whenever we can we enjoy getting to share our lives together and support and encourage each other. Small Group Tracy Leong Ma On Shan Group This group, based in Ma On Shan, has both adults and children. We start with worship, then we split into two groups for Bible study, and there is one adult to lead each group. Everyone looks forward to come together and I personally have seen each become closer and more mature in following and serving God. For 2011, we have gone through the Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer, and also completed A Woman After God's Heart by Eadie Goodboy. The children also had their bible studies on the Sermon on the Mount, the Fruit of the Spirit. They are now doing the Ten Commandments. We also pray for each other's needs. It is really good to see love, support, and encouragement within the fellowship. This year also saw this group multiply into two groups. The other half met in Shatin. I am thankful and honored to have served God in this way, and I have learnt and gained quite a lot. I pray for God's Hand to continue to be with this group and the new leadership.

Small Group Tom Kamau Rode-Christoffersen, Karl Udy Tai Po Group The TaiPo Friday Small Group has met pretty consistently two Fridays a month since the beginning of 2010. We have enjoyed good times of food and fellowship as well as some very good studies. With a very varied group, we have a great diversity of perspectives which is a real blessing! Being made up of young families, getting together can be a challenge at times, but we are keen to see where God is taking our small group next! This small group is currently made up of four families.

Children’s Ministry Lisa DF, Irene I & Marieke R-C Rainbows

The Rainbows group is for children from age 3 to 6. We usually have 4 - 12 children in class. Over the past year, we have been studying from a book called Our Great

Big God. Through stories, games, songs and crafts, we've covered many of Jesus' parables, the death and resurrection of Jesus, stories from the Book of Acts and are now moving into the Old Testament stories. The children have lots of energy, love singing and moving around, and really enjoy the crafts. We've also seen more children willing to pray in the group, which is exciting. Children at this age can be a bit shy about sharing in groups, so through getting-to-know-you activities we've seen them open up more and more. Sometimes it's hard to get them to stop! :-)

Children’s Ministry Tracy L & Evelyn Y Lifegivers

Last year saw changes in Kingdom Kids. Our kids (6-8 years old) chose to call themselves "Lifegivers" this year.

The Lifegivers are made up of beautiful children. They have teachable spirits and are kind, gentle, loving and pure hearted. Being with them remind us that these are virtues which we want to have more in our own lives. Their prayers are simple

and meaningful, and they love games and art & crafts. They are a real pleasure to be with and we are grateful and honoured to be given the chance to work with them.

The curriculum we have is fun and easy to use. I think leaders enjoy our sessions as much as the children!

We are also blessed with John Del Favero, Janakan Arulkumarasan, Willa

Hung, Brent Hauser and Tom Rode- Christoffersen who have volunteered to help us whenever they can. We really appreciate their willingness to serve. It is so good to have members of the wider church family ministering to the kids this way.

May all our faith continue to grow in the Lord to give glory to his name!

Children’s Ministry Penny Y, Evelyn E, Marieke RC Arc Troopers

Our 9 – 11 group this year is called "Arc Troopers". The name they chose reflects the groups' love of excitement, power of God to save and the strength to stand against the enemy.

This age group has been led for many years by Wendy and Jane. Wendy stepped down in June, and Jane finished in December after 8 years of service (applause). Many thanks for their dedication.

The teachers now are Penny, Evelyn and Marieke, with helpers David Del Favero, Xavier, Sue Keelty and Amy Udy.

We regularly have about 13 children, of which only one or two are girls. Through the year we have enjoyed many games, studied sections of the Old and the New Testament centering on God's power and faithfulness, discussed how God wants us to live, learnt more about prayer and put our faith into action by performing in skits for the church. We are excited to see this group exploring questions, thinking about how God's laws apply to their lives, and growing in their own personal faith.

Children’s Ministry Pearl C, Susie Y Revelation Warriors Revelation Warriors is the Sunday Youth Program for 11-14 year old youths at Shatin Church. It is a transitional program between Kingdom Kids and the youth group Solid Rock, who join the Adult Service on Sundays. Each year Revelation Warriors takes on a new character as its members change and mature! This year we have boys!!!!! The group has ranged from 7 – 13 youths with the welcome addition of 6 boys and 2 new girls. Following the goals of the group, our meetings are aimed at encouraging growth in each youth’s personal relationship with God and exploring the areas in which they can be a part of Shatin Church. The leaders of the group are Susie Young and Pearl Chan. Our current format is as follows:

1st Sunday of the month RW’s meet for the full Sunday morning from 10a.m. – 11:30

a.m. Our program includes Praise and Worship, Bible Study, Sharing, Ice-breaker, and Prayer.

2nd Sunday of the month

RW’s join the worship and serve as the welcome team, collecting offering and ushering the communion line.

3rd and 4th Sundays of the month

RW’s meet as a small group.

** 5th Sunday of the month

For months with a 5th Sunday, RW will join the worship service.

This year, a core leadership group has been established of 5 mature members ready to take on a leadership role in the group. Susie and Pearl are so thankful for the enthusiasm of Heidi Del Favero, Hannah Howard, Natasha Rode-Christoffersen, Annabel Hui and Christobel Hui as they begin to realize their potential in Christ. They assist in the planning of RW’s involvement in the service every month, lead prayer walks, lead the ice-breakers, and lead RW discussion groups.

It is equally rewarding to see how the whole group has grown and developed in their special gifts. This year, the group proved their maturity by the inspirational skit performed for the congregation in Fall, 2011, and their participation in the Christingle Service. Under the guidance of Susie Young, the group was active in choosing the skit, developing the characters, getting together the props and performing a skit which touched the congregation! They again showed their potential in the Christingle Service not only by their readings during the service, but in helping to make the Christingles handled out to the congregation! Susie and Pearl were impressed by the maturity revealed as they prepared for both presentations. It seemed as if overnight, this group of silly fun loving kids turned into serious individuals giving their all and best for Jesus! Three specific goals for the group this year are to develop a solid walk with Christ, mature in their understanding of being living witnesses for Christ, and regularly praying for Shatin Church, and the greater world.

Please continue to pray for us (RW’s) as we:

• Continue our ministry every 2nd service in ushering, collecting offering and ushering for Communion.

• Plan and share a program in Kingdom Kids.

• Grow in faith in midst of the fast-approaching teen years.

Please pray for the leaders:

• Susie Young and Pearl Chan.

• Meeting our specific goals for the group and helping each RW become all they can for Christ.

• Wisdom in leading a larger group of 10 – 13 RW’s of mixed gender.

• Wisdom, insights and understanding of the teenage years.

Youth Ministry Kevin Chiu Solid Rock The year 2011 was a year of preparation and building the core members of the youth group. We established a core group which were involved with serving and sharing in Solid Rock, but due to majority of the members having to leave due to study commitments, the group was disbanded. Nonetheless, Sadie Granberg started helping out from mid-2011, and we started Christianity Explored to start exploring Christianity from the ground up. We're currently going through apologetics and examining our faith, and also answering difficult questions about Christianity. Solid Rock numbers have been growing from 5 members to 22 members last week. Our core group is strong and we hope to build on this by having outreach events (we recently hosted a successful Chocolate Fondue party) and reaching out especially to the youth of Shatin Church. David Chou stepped down from Solid Rock at the end of February and Kevin Chiu, Sadie Granberg and Alex Colgan will be leading Solid Rock going forward. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank David for all his hard work and tirelessly building Solid Rock over the past year and a half.

Young Adult Ministry Daniel Pang SALT

The SALT group (Share, Act, Love, Teach) began in November 2011, the first session being on the 21st. SALT ran fortnightly from November to January, and took place at the Onoko office at Shek Mun.

Each session was aimed at providing fellowship, worship, teaching and bonding for the 20s and 30s in Shatin Church (it was somewhat of a revival of the old 20s and 30s group) as well as providing a venue for evangelism. Each session consisted of praise, speaking and praying sections. The teaching

involved a guest speaker each week, speaking on a variety of topics. Topics have included spiritual gifts, using our gifts to serve the church, how to be a Christian at work, and how to use the gifts of social media for evangelism.

Starting from February 2012, SALT has been scaled down to a monthly timetable, to take place on the third Friday of each month. The fellowship and teaching of the Sunday Small Groups currently holds priority. In the coming few months, SALT will become more Bible study-based than before. The next six sessions of SALT will focus on themes such as discipleship, living with grace and sin, cultivating a deeper relationship with Jesus, etc.

Patti Hunter Philippines Fellowship

We have had a wonderful year! Using Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Myers as the basis for our main study proved to be a great blessing. It enabled us to take the powerful truth of God’s word and “put shoe leather” on it – or in other words- make it so practical that we could apply and use it in our daily lives. We often found ourselves in tears as we were able to pray and share into each other’s lives.

When we finished Battlefield of the Mind, we began a mini-study of the Gospel of John. As many of us were involved in the small group training, we used the excellent techniques that Pastor Heewoo taught to “dig” into the Word. I think we all felt a real refreshing from God’s Spirit after our sessions. Truly His Word is active and powerful!

Over the year, our numbers have steadily grown, and now we usually have ~ 15 ladies participating.

Christmas was a big highlight as “Aunty Wendy” invited us to spend the day (and for some ladies) the night at HOLF. We were SO grateful. One of the best parts of the day was when we were asked to come down and share our worship and the performances the PF ladies had planned with the HOLF family. With great joy, we celebrated with song and dance (even Aunty Wendy took part!).

The PF format will be changing as the ladies will be integrating into the small groups. We will still meet at 2:00, but a new focus is being planned.

We look forward to all the blessings He has for us in the coming year!

Jon Keelty Music Team The past 12 months has been a productive time for the music ministry. As a team we continue to develop and grow together and overall the quality of performance maintains a high standard. There are a few key points to note:

• The departure ( after many years of faithful service ) of James Low from the ministry;

• The departure of another faithful leader ( Robert Rigadon ) who moved back to the Philippines;

• The addition to the leader roster of Kathy Lee;

• Several new members who have volunteered to serve, and several members who have left for a variety of reasons

From the above statements you can surmise (correctly) that a constant state of flux means that it is difficult to see a clear path forward in developing the ministry in the future. Our ongoing prayer request is for more committed and talented

church members to come forward with a desire to serve! We continue to be blessed with the support of a competent PA team, and recent purchases of new equipment have allowed us to further improve our production quality. As the church moves forward into this new era of growth we will be praying and listening to the Lord for clear guidance on how to develop both as a group of musicians and as passionate worshippers! We look forward as a team to continuing to serve the Lord and His people at Shatin Church into the coming year.

Andy Hutton Alpha Course The 2011 Alpha course, lead by Vanaja Jesudian was held over 8 weeks beginning on Sunday 9th October. There were also prayer and training sessions held over the 3 preceding Sundays for the volunteer helpers. The main impression of this Alpha Course was that the Holy Spirit was at work throughout. We could sense God's love and presence. Many of our guests were touched. The Lord provided for us each step of the way. Being part of the Alpha Team was made easy by a willingness to serve evident amongst everyone concerned. There was also real unity within the group. The majority of those attending new to the church were students from Chinese University of Hong Kong, who did not attend regularly, however it was good to have the opportunity to see the Lord impact these students even in such a short period of time. The Alpha Day Away, which was held at the Home of Loving Faithfulness (HOLF), the leaders and staff providing a warm welcome, proved to be a high point. There were more than 15 people, and we believe the students' hearts especially, all of whom were none Christians were stirred. Most of the Christians who completed the course seemed to become more excited about their faith in Jesus. And there was obvious growth in several people’s relationship with the Lord. A small number of individuals having completed the course are now attending the church Sunday service on a regular basis. And we praise the Lord that at least one person became a Christian on the course itself. It was a positive experience for everyone involved.

Michael Keung Amplification Ministry The aim of the amplification team is to enhance our worship and support the Word by providing audio facilities and mixing in the Sunday service, Church Camp and special events. In 2011, PA team decided to renew part of the existing sound system as some equipments have served us for long time since Shatin Church started and their technical problem often caused issues like feedback, poor sound quality (e.g. hums and buzzes) and muddy music. Therefore, we have purchased a new mixing console, front of house speakers and microphones. With the new equipment, setup and testing process in the morning could be smoother without many unexpected breakdown. Also, it achieves both good intelligibility for the spoken word and clean dynamic sound for the worship. Please pray for us that we continue to provide an environment where people can encounter and focus to God. Pray for more new member to join our team and opportunity to run training workshops so that we will be better equipped to serve the body of Christ. I would like to thank Peter Lee who helps checking and repairing the PA devices. I am grateful to all team members for their commitment and willingness to serve in PA ministry. I know getting to the church at 8:00am especially in winter is not easy :P. I wish to express my gratitude to you all (Paul Fox, Joe Yip, Sam Fan, PC Wong, Mathew Ngan, John, David and Janae Del Favero) for your loving service, as well as a special word of thanks to Jon Keelty and Paul Fox for their friendly advice and passion for excellence in worshipping our LORD!

Paul Fox Maranatha House

One year ago, we were writing the report for Maranatha House (MH), expecting it to be our last.

However, it was not to be, and as we now review the year, it turns out that we needed a further 130+ emails, about a dozen visits to inspect or carry out remedial work, 150+ photographs, many telephone calls (mostly persuasive with our Landlord) and letters (in nature, mostly contractual), consultation with professional experts, monthly reviews by the STC Committee, as well as shopping for construction tools and materials, arrangements for contractors, and many, many prayers by us all. Maranatha House was finally handed back to the Government Property Agency on 15 December 2011!! Praise the Lord !!

Along the way, we experienced some setbacks, contrasted by some good working bee group efforts (and team bonding opportunities) to hand MH back in acceptable condition. One of the largest working bee groups set to work early on a very sunny Easter Monday morning, the 25 April 2011, in a final effort to meet the requirements of various government departments involved in taking MH back. When we arrived we found there had been a break–in. We then had to make further arrangements to clean it up and make the place presentable. Later in the year, we ran into further difficulties with meeting the requirements of the Government. In summary, although we had satisfied them regarding the main building (structurally, and with regard to mechanical and electrical services), they wanted us to do some significant remedial works to the shed structure at the side which was occasionally used for barbeques. This was the only outstanding item at issue, and it took several months before we could finally persuade them to accept it as is.

We want to again express our thanks to all those who helped in any way to bring these matters to an honourable conclusion. There are too many to mention by name, but you know who you are. Again, we also thank God for the provision of Maranatha House over these many years, as well as guiding us throughout this handing back process. This really will be the final report about MH, and we hereby close the file and this chapter in the life of Shatin Church.

Lourdes E Bisweten Pre-Service Prayers Ministry This is the 5th year of my leadership and I want to give glory and honor to our dear Lord Jesus. I want to thank everyone who faithfully helped us. Our service for the Lord will be rewarded one day openly by God who sees all sacrifices for Him. We have had 9 regular members in the ministry this year. Mari Uno had a baby so she went back to Japan for maternity leave. The rest of us gathered every Sunday morning to pray. Most of the time, the youth came at 8:30 and the rest started at 9am and finished at 9:50. The main aim of the ministry is to pray for the service, our Pastor and his sermon, the worship time, other ministries and Bible studies. We also pray regularly for all the leaders, the committee members, our giving, and for our talents to be used for God’s glory. We include those who are also in overseas or are travelling, for our own friends, families, neighbours, and also for the world. We also prayed for the new comers, old members, and extended family of Shatin Church. Through the past months and weeks, we heard a lot of testimonies from friends, families and relatives. Some of our answered prayers are these.

1) God provided a new pastor for our Church

2) He added 4 youth members to this group (David Chou, Kayli & Heide Del

Favero, and Hannah Howard)

3) Mari & Michael are blessed with a baby boy

4) I am blessed with new granddaughter (5th)

5) A father with 2 daughters came to received Christ and got baptized

together

6) Lots stories of healing by God’s power.

I’d like to invite everyone to come and join us in room 104 on Sunday mornings and do include us in your prayers too. Thank you and God bless all of us.

Paul Fox Recording Ministry Members of the Recording Ministry have worked throughout the year recording, editing and uploading the sermons each week and have achieved a reasonable consistency of quality of output and timeliness of upload. We have revised and updated our training notes this year, but these need to be further refined as we adapt to the latest version of the software we need to use. Whilst we have had few changes of membership over the past 12 months, there is a need for one or two more people to help with this duty. If any members of the church want to join us in this ministry, please contact Paul Fox, Michael Keung or our Church Office. Finally, we give thanks to God for providing people with the technical skills as well as a heart for service through this ministry. Edwin Cho Video Ministry Looking back, the Video Ministry (VM) had experienced an uneventful year last year. The following events were video-taped - 1. Pastor Dale's last sermon and farewell presentation (July 2011) 2. STC Family Service (July 2011) 3. Pastor Heewoo's first Sunday Service (August 2011) 4. Church Camp (October 2011) 5. Christingle Service (December 2011)

Over the years, the VM has been working practically alone without any participation of the congregation. The church’s video equipment and software have not been fully utilized and are aging. Despite the inactive response from the congregation to be involved in the works of the VM, there seems to be a chance for change. In the last video project in last December, some members of the Kingdom Kids had displayed talents for drama thanks to the hard work and creativity of the leader of the Kingdom Kids. So, there may be a chance for development in this direction in which the younger ones could show their imagination and talents through this media.

The vision of the VM is to spread the Gospel and His messages through audio-visual means. It also serves as a faithful record of events in the church for posterity. I pray to God to inspire more members of the church to get involved and share the work of the Video Ministry.

Carol Wong Refreshments Ministry

I thank Selene Lim, my predecessor, who had done such a great job before me. It was my first year as a refreshment coordinator which is the biggest duty I have ever taken up in Church. I was highly inexperienced in catering and thank you for your tolerance for all the mistakes I made during the year.

There were many changes in refreshment ministry this year: 1. Selene Lim, Flor Casio, Penny Yu, Lorinda Sng and

Mary Town left the refreshment team. Shirley Chau and Angie Lucaben joined and left. Emie Hutton, Annie Tee, Willa Hung, Betty Tayaan and Jane Wong joined. I wish to thank them and the existing members, Jatinder Singh, Celina Ningas, Alisa Shum, for their contributions to the refreshment and church lunches. Without them, the refreshments and church lunches would have not been that successful.

2. I also added my personal favour in the refreshment, like reducing the number of Chinese pastries while introducing nuts, fruits, biscuits and packed drinks. The feedback of the change was positive.

We had three church lunches to farewell Pastor Dale, celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Church and a regular church lunch in December. I wish to thank all the people who helped and contributed in the church lunches but I wish to express special thanks to the PF which provided great help in refreshments and church lunches. Without the help and contributions, I don’t think the church lunches could have been that successful. Due to my limited experience in catering, some things could have done better. Especially the turnouts for church lunches greatly exceeded my expectation and the budget which caused the shortage of food. I wish to express my apology for all those who missed any of the church lunches and gratitude for the tolerance.

We request your prayers for the team’s unity to continue carry out their duties in an effective and efficient manner. Please stay behind after church service for the fellowship with other church members.

Emie Hutton Tambourine Dance Ministry

The number of dancers has been fewer through 2011 than in previous years. Four members chose to return permanently to the Philippines and finding new volunteers has been a slow process. Thankfully through the year two new dancers have made themselves available allowing the ministry to continue. Due to low numbers, no special performances were presented during the year. Sadly Alicia Nuarin, who has attended the fellowship since it came into being and faithfully served with the ministry since it was set up has decided to step down. We thank her for her faithful service to the tambourine ministry over many years.

Please pray for the ministry, that others would sense God’s prompting to join and that a group would come together to allow for at least one special presentation during 2012. A basic tambourine dance course lasts from 6 to 8 weeks. Those interested should contact me by calling 9244 6131 or emailing [email protected] In addition the tambourine dance team practice from 8.30 to 9.30 am each Sunday morning before the service. Anyone interested is welcome to visit to find out what is involved.

Treasurer’s Report Kenneth Au

Overview

With the blessing and provision from God throughout 2011, there was a surplus in our income even though it did not meet the target level. Together with prudent expense control, we finished the year with a surplus of $211,461, which is more than the budgeted surplus of $19,300. A year-end balance $922,013 on general fund was left. This will enable us to move forward with confidence into year 2012. We thank and praise our Lord for that. Income

Annual income decreased by 7% to $1,947,133 this past year. Loose offering decreased by around $49,000. Envelopes and bank transfers decreased by around $223,000. The level of planned giving decreased from 85% (2010) to 80% (2011). There was a special income "Minister Expenses Reimbursement" of $126,565 from St. Andrew's, as Pastor Dale shared time with both churches. The rest of the income came through in the form of loose offering and bank interests. Expenses

Annual expenses decreased by around 10% to $1,735,672. The larger expense items were minister expenses (37%), mission tithes (15%), staff salary & expenses (15%) and office expenses (10%). We kept supporting 14 missions at each quarter.

Budget

Under the current worldwide economic recovery, the church committee has kept the budget income as $2,080,100 and decided to be prudent in its spending. The committee planned an operating budget of $2,064,093 with a surplus of $16,000. The budget maintains the current level of staffing and percentage tithe to mission support and reflects the priorities to:

• Maintenance and replacement of Music & PA system

• Small groups , SALT

• Running Alpha and Christianity Explored courses I would like to thank God for His provision, Pastor Dale Hanson and Pastor Heewoo Han for his encouragement and support, and the church committee members for their patience and understanding. Pray that the money will be spent wisely and the work be done in HIS will not our will.

Pastor’s Report Rev Heewoo Han “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:6-9). Doesn’t the title ‘senior minister’ sound intimidating? Doesn’t it invoke gray hair and wrinkles around the corner of one’s eyes? It has been about seven months since I have joined the Shatin church family, and I remember feeling nervous about wearing the title. But I soon realized that ‘senior minister’ didn’t mean that I was going to have to do everything alone. When I arrived in the sweltering heat of August, I found many faithful ministers who were serving the church already. There were the members of the church committee who loved the church. I was also inspired by the weekly ministry of the PA and the music team. I know it’s not easy to wake up early on Sunday mornings. There were other ministers in the church too, those who prayed, prepared refreshments, led children’s and youth programs and served in small groups. I saw that “God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just he wanted them to be” (1 Cor 12:18), and that my job was to encourage and point people to Jesus. I’m grateful that I am only one among many ministers who play their part in growing this body of Christ. The second realization that made wearing the title easier was the thought that ‘senior minister’ wasn’t the leader of Shatin Church. Peter called local pastors under-shepherds and Jesus the chief shepherd (1 Peter 5:2, 4). It helps me to know that God is in charge and that He is ultimately responsible for the growth of his body. It is his church! It’s great to know that even our biggest flaws cannot thwart God’s plan for his body, and our best efforts are useless until God blesses them. Ultimately it is only God who can be in charge. But as the one appointed to lead this church, I’d love to point our eyes to a couple of directions this coming year. In 2012 I’d love for us to grow in two main spiritual disciplines: reading the Bible and praying. I’d love for us to love God’s word and to meditate on it day and night. I’d love for us to study God’s words, chew on them, digest them and live them. I’d love for our church to preach and teach the Bible. I’d love for us to talk about the Bible when discussing politics, family issues, relationships…etc. I’d love for us to know God’s mind so well through the Bible that it’s natural for us to think like Jesus. To jump start the growth in that direction, we’ve started Links, our small group meeting on Sundays. I will be

Page 28: AGM Report 2011 - Shatin Anglican Church...Page 2 of 28 SHATIN CHURCH 21st ANNUAL CHURCH MEETING Sunday 11 th March, 2012 at 12:00 noon at Tsang Shiu Tim School, Wo Che A G E N D A

praying throughout this year that the groups will learn to love God’s word and live it out. Secondly, I’d love for us to pray more together in 2012. If it is only God who will allow us grow, it only makes sense to talk to him continually. As you know, we’ve started to meet to pray every second and fourth Fridays of each month. Right now only about ten people come regularly. It’d be great to see many more Shatin Church members develop a habit of praying together. When we pray together as a church, we’ll learn to be a dependent church whose power is God’s power. In the past six months, our young adult group (SALT) was resurrected. We are changing the website and the logo. Our Sunday small groups list over hundred and ten participants. There will be more baptism classes, outreach events and prayer meetings. But let’s not get caught up in the flurry of activities. Participating in programs was never what it meant to be a church. Let’s be united most this year around studying God’s word and praying, for nothing that we do will be meaningful unless we remember that it is only God who makes us grow. How exciting that God has brought us together to be his body!
