Type2diabetesisthemostcommonformofthecondition.Ithappenswhenthebodydoesn’tuseinsulinproperly.Thismakesithardforthebodytoturnfoodintoenergy.Overtime,thebodycan’tmakeenoughinsulintokeepup,andbloodsugarrises.Highbloodsugardamagesnervesandbloodvessels,whichcanleadtoheartdisease,strokeandotherhealthproblems.

The Gulf Coast Elder AbuseConferencewassponsoredbytheSt.TammanySALTCouncil.

ST. BERNARD MANOR RESIDENTSPARTICIPATE IN HURRICANE EVACUATION DRILL

More thanhalfof theresidentsatSt.BernardManor tookpart inaparish-widehurricaneevacuationexerciseonMay30th. EarlyWednesdaymorningtheresidentslinedupbetakenonaparishbustotheciviccenter.ItwastherethattheyweremetbyNationalGuardas well as emergency operations managers from a across St. Bernardparish. Allresidentswhoparticipatedwerecheckedin,justastheywouldbeiftherewerearealemergency.DirectorofHomelandSecurityforSt.BernardParish,JohnRahaim,Jr.,wasonhandtoexplainthattheevacuationprocedurehasmanylayersandcouldeventuallyendupwithresidentsbeingtakentoNorthLouisianainthecaseofasevereemergency. Once the residents were transported back to St. Bernard ManorCommunityManagerWandaRobertsonandServiceCoordinatorBabetteCharbonnetraffledoffmanystorm-relatednecessities. HurricaneseasonrunsthroughNovember30th. FormoreinformationonwhatSt.BernardParishGovernmentisdoingthishurricaneseasonyoucangotowww.sbpg.netorfollowthemonFacebook.

Representatives from the City of New Orleans, the Department ofHealth,aswellasTransdev,theprivateoperatingpartneroftheRTA,wereonhandatSt.MartinManortogiveresidentsthecrucialinformationtheywouldneedinthecaseofastorm.Around75peopleparticipatedinthisevent. ArepresentativefromtheRTAalsoattendedeventsatseveralother

Several Christopher Homes properties organizedeventsinhonorofFather’sDay.DonnaPrevosttheactivitycoordinatorforSt.JohnBerchman’sandAnnunciationInnorganizedcelebrationsateachoftheproperties.

OnJune11,2018,St.Martin’sManorhadtheirFather’sDayCelebrationLuncheon.Thereweremorethanfiftymaleresidentsinattendance.Everyoneenjoyedthemselves.ThemealwaspreparedbyMs.LynnJohnsonwhichconsistedofbakedchicken,bakedmacaroniandcheese,vegetables,garlic bread, tossed salad along with a special orderedFather’sDaycakefordesert.Ms.JontellMilestoppingitoffwithaspecialhomemadefruitdrinkwhichwasagreathit.

Mr. Melvin Hoganblessed the foodwith his graceand thanked theLord for allowingall of the fatherstobe togetheron

this beautiful occasion.Theywereespeciallygladto have the St. Martin’sManor male staff (Mr.Charles and Mr. Huu) inattendance. The oldestfather of the property,Mr. Harold Everage, wasacknowledged.

Wynhoven and Rouquette residents meet up for lunch atMiddendorf’s.TherestaurantinManchac,whichispopularforitsthin-friedcatfishandhushpuppies,waspackedwithChristopherHomesresidentsonJune1st.Wynhoven activity coordinator, Denise Batiste helped organize theevents. The lunch came complete with a craft. The outings are aregularthingforthosewholiveatWynhoven.

ResidentsandstaffwereinvitedtoacrawfishboilatMetairieManor.Hundredsofthemudbugswereboiledupfortheannualfeast.Thetwopotstaskedwithboilingupallofthecrawfishcouldholdhundredsofpoundseach.

NEW ORLEANS TRICENTENNIAL

Providedby

TheoldestcemeteryinNewOrleansisSt.LouisCemetery#1from1789.ItwasstartedtheyearafterthegreatfireofNewOrleansintheareawenowknowastheFrenchQuarter. WhileburialsarestillpresentlyoccurringinSt.Louis#1,thevastmajorityofthetombshavelittletonoactivity. TheotherNewOrleansCatholicCemeterieswhichareallstillactiveincludeSt.Louis#2&#3,St.Roch#1&#2,St.Patrick#1,#2&#3,St.Joseph#1&#2,St.Vincent#1&#2onSoniatStreet,andSt.CharlesCemeteryinLuling.

Afewofthesecemeteriesoffernewmausoleumcryptsandfamilytombs. The only New OrleansCatholic Cemeteries currentlyoffering niches for crematedremains are St. Roch #2 and St.Louis#3. According to the CremationAssociation of North America,the cremation percentage forLouisianaisonly27%,howeverintheNewOrleansarea it iscloserto50%. Thecurrentcremationinurnment percentage in NewOrleans Catholic Cemeteries is40%.

ForCatholicsnotfullyawareofthecremationguidelinesaccordingtotheCodeofCanonLaw,in1963,theVaticanbeganacceptingcremationasanalternativeprovidingthecrematedremainsarestilltreatedwiththesamerespectasthehumanbodyandthecrematedremainsareinterredinacemetery.ThecrematedremainscanbepresentintheCatholicChurchfortheFuneralLiturgy. With the rise incremation, itwasdecided that thegreenspace inSt.Patrick#3wouldbebestservedas a beautiful, sacred cremationgarden. GroundbreakingonQueen of All Saints Cremation Gardenhasstarted and the granite deliveryis expected later in July. Thegardenwill includevariousstylesofcremationniches,benchesandstoneboulders.Therewillbetwowater features includingagrottoareawithanOurLadyofLourdesstatue; a Holy Family statue willadorn another columbarium, andtherewillbeagazebosurroundedby14columbariawitheachhavingacarvedSaintontheside. 97-YEAR-OLD WYNHOVEN RESIDENT CONTINUES TO GIVE BACK HeisaWorldWarIIveteranwhocontinuestoserveothers.Mr.SamCooperis97yearsold,butyouwouldn’tknowit.Hespendsseveraldaysaweekvolunteering.TwodaysaweekhehelpsresidentsatWynhovenHealth.It’srightinthebackyardofWynhoven,theplacehe’scalledhomeforthepastfewyears.“Ihelppushtheminthewheelchair,sothenursecangiveherfullattention,”saysMr.Cooper.

Wynhoven is a place forseniors to live independently.Mr.Coopersuredoesthat.He’sas independent as they come.AlongwithbeingaWorldWarIIveteran,Mr.Cooperisacancersurvivor.AllofthathasgivenMr.Cooper a different perspectiveon life.Hesayshedoesn’t feel97. ThestaffatWynhovenHealthsays that Mr. Cooper is a bighelpandthathealwaysbringsagreatsenseofhumorwithhim.

SOCIAL MEDIA 101 ChristopherHomes isactiveonsocialmediaandCHI’sDirectorofCommunicationsstartedmaking theroundstomakesureresidentsandstaffareabletofollowalong.MarcyO’Learyheld12informationalsessionstoexplaintheusesofFacebook,InstagramandTwitter. IhavealwaysthoughtofJulyasaspecialtimeforfamily.July4thBBQ’s,reunions,

vacations,swimming,thebeach,andrelaxation.Yes,Julyisatimeforfamilyandfor

thisreason,wehavescheduledourfirstannualChristopherHomesstafffamilypicnicin

appreciationofallthatyoudotoserveourseniorsandthecertainsacrificesyourfamilies

mustmakeasyoufulfillthisministryofservice.

WehopethateachofourChristopherHomesstaffwillbeabletocomeouttoAudubonZooonJuly

28thtoenjoythefood,thefun,theZooexhibits,andthecamaraderieandfellowship.

Aswecelebratefamily,weshouldconsiderthosethatarelessfortunate.Whileweareabletoenjoy

thefreedomandopportunityinthiscountry,noteveryonecan.Most,ifnotallofus,comefromancestors

thatmigratedhereforthechanceofabetterlife.Ourcountrybenefittedtremendouslyfromthe

immigrationofpeopleswhobroughttalents,skills,knowledge,anddesirewiththem.

Inrecentweeks,wehaveexperiencedmuchcontroversyconcerningtheimmigrationissuesonour

southernborder.Ofthemanyconcerns,thegreatestistheseparationofchildrenfromtheirparents.

Thisisanissueofmoralconcernandaviolationagainstthedignityoftheperson.OurArchbishop

GregoryAymondrecentlyissuedthefollowingstatementregardingimmigration.

“Inthelast6weeks,nearly2,000childrenhavebeenseparatedfromtheirparentsattheTexas

border.Separatingchildrenfromtheirparentsoftenleadstolong-termemotionalscarring.Particularly

forthesefamilieswhoarealreadyinastateofanxietyandfear,theimpactonboththechildrenandthe

parents,willnodoubtbelong-lasting.Asapeopleoffaith,wemustspeakoutforthesechildren.

TheteachingoftheCatholicChurchisthatifapersonisexperiencinginjustice,persecution,or

danger,theyhaveahumanrighttofindaplaceofsecurityinwhichtobeginanewlife.Webelievein

thedignityofthehumanpersonandthepreservationofthefamily.Nationsareencouragedtocreate

lawsthatwillallowlegalimmigrationinajustway.Asachurchwehaveneversuggested,“Openour

borders–allarewelcome”,yetcountriesmustregulatetheirborderswithjusticeandmercy.Webelieve

immigrationshouldbeguidedbylawsthatshowcharitywhileprovidingsafetyandsecurity.Ourcurrent

immigrationlawsarenotguidedbytheseprinciplesandarenotfairorjust.

LetusrecalltheprincipleinJewishlawandtheteachingofJesus,“Dotootherswhatyouwouldhave

themdotoyou”(Luke6:31).Wearecalledtoprayforthoseunjustlytreatedandtobeavoiceforthem.I

inviteallpeopleofgoodwilltojoinmeinprayerforoursistersandbrothersandtoactontheirbehalfby

contactingourgovernmentofficialsandurgingthemtostopthesedehumanizingpracticesandmakea

sincereefforttowardscomprehensiveimmigration.”

Wearetoldeffortsarenowinplacetoresolvetheissueofseparationofchildrenfromtheir

family.Forthis,wearegrateful.AstheArchbishopsuggestsweshouldofferprayersandadvocate

foracomprehensiveimmigrationpolicythatisjust,effective,andprotectiveofbothourcountryand

immigrants.ThisisthewaytolivetheGospelmessageofChristandthatgreatestofcommandmentsto

loveourneighborasourselves.
