The steady march o progress in test and measurement

capability has been punctuated by a ew innovations that

moved the state o the art orward in giant leaps. These

game-changers were oten the result o seamlessly integrating

multiple measurement concepts in a single instrument.

Back in the 1990s, or example, the integration o analog and

digital analysis in mixed-signal oscilloscopes (MSOs) changedhow engineers troubleshoot embedded systems. A decade

later, the integration o serial protocol analysis in scopes

led to a second major breakthrough.

    The challenge o seamless simplicity

This concept o merging instruments is not new, o course,

but its never been simpleand simplicity is what separates

a tool o last resort rom a tool o rst choice.

A quick look back at the story o analog-digital analysis

highlights this challenge. In the 1970s, engineers could cross-

trigger their oscilloscopes and logic analyzers. Programming

was available in the early 1980s. Then adding oscilloscope

acquisition modules to logic analyzers allowed simultaneous

displays o both domains and simplied cross-triggering.

As powerul as it could be, however, the cross-domain meth-

odology didnt catch on until there was a major breakthrough

in simplicity. When Agilent (then HP) created the rst MSO in

1997, its amiliar and intuitive scope-like use model stripped

away the complexity normally associated with logic analyzers.

As a result, customers are standardizing on MSO models.

    Stimulus/response testing moves ast orward

    in one giant leap

In February 2011, Agilent became the rst major scope

vendor to include a unction generator option in an

oscilloscope, with the InniiVision 2000 and 3000 X-Series.

There are clear advantages to this approach:

You can work rom a single, integrated interace, so setting

up and running tests is simpler and aster.

It lowers the solution cost by eliminating redundant

components such as displays and keyboards when using

    multiple instruments.

It takes less space on your bench, and its more portable

when you need to work on the move.

For educational use and technician training, sample

test signals are built into the instrument.

Now with arbitrary waveorms: real-lie signals

    that serve up real-lie insights

This capability took another big leap in October 2011 with the in-

troduction o arbitrary waveorm generation or the 3000 X-Series

WaveGen option. Three examples illustrate how this new capabil-

ity pushes stimulus-response testing through the simplicity barrier:

You can now capture a signal with your scope and instantly

convert it to an arb stimulus le. Capturing a golden

waveorm to test against another design has never been

easier. You can even use the results o a one- or two-

channel mathematical operation (lters or addition, or

example) as an arb source. Figure 1.

Quickly test the margins o your design by changing the

requency, amplitude, and oset o your golden signal

or even add noisein real-time. This will help you

understand the most likely ailure modes. Figure 2.

For more extensive waveorm creation and editing, consider

Agilents BenchLink Waveorm Builder Pro sotware. It com-

bines basic waveorm design with a large waveorm library,

lters, math, and more. You can quickly capture a signal withyour scope, edit it in Waveorm Builder, then send it back to

    the AWG. Figure 3.

Turn your scope into a multi-unction

    measurement machine

Integrated stimulus/response testing with the WaveGen option

is just one o many versatile measurement applications you

can add to the Agilent 2000 and 3000-X Series scopes. Other

multi-unction instrument capability available includes digital

channel analysis, industry-specic serial signal analysis, and

many other application options help you debug aster

and move rom data to quick insight.

When more accurate and higher delity signals generation

is required, remember to complement your scope with oneo Agilents leading unction/arbitrary waveorm generators.

The 33503A BenchLink Waveorm Builder Pro sotware

also supports the Agilent 33200, 33500, and 81100 Series

    waveorm generators.
