Last Timeout: Third-seeded North Carolina A&T blew past No. 6 Bethune-Cookman 75-54 in Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup at the MEAC tournament at Norfolk Scope Arena. The win advances the Aggies (20-10), who have won 20 or more games three straight seasons and six out of the last eight, to the semifinals where they will face No. 2 seed Savannah State at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. McRae finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Smith also scored in double figures with 13 on 6-for-10 shooting. Nazario and Dana Brown had 10 apiece. The Aggies shot a season-high 56.3 percent from the floor. SSU and A&T split during the regular season with the Tigers winning in Greensboro and the Aggies winning in Savannah, Ga.In the National Spotlight: The Aggies were nationally ranked in the Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 poll presented by collegeinsider.com. The Aggies entered the poll at No. 17 and was the only historically black university in the poll.

2014-15 Preview: A&T was picked to win the 2014-15 MEAC regular sea-son title for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The Aggies received 15 first place votes as redshirt juniors Eboni Ross and Aprill McRae were named to the preseason All-MEAC first team.

Returners: The Aggies return five players that averaged at least 8.0 points per game last season. Redshirt junior Christina Carter returns as the top scorer (9.6 ppg) and she also led the MEAC in assists, averaging 5.1 per game last season. Carter displayed her ability to be a distributer and scorer after guard Adriana Nazario (R-Jr., 5-8, Charleston, WVa.), who ended the season averaging 8.0 points per game, suffered a season-ending injury in December. Guard Debbie Smith (R-Sr., 5-10, Hampton, Va.) and forward Aprill McRae (R-Jr., 6-3, Raleigh, N.C.), a second-team All-MEAC selection last season, made great strides in their first year with the Aggies. McRae (8.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and center Eboni Ross (R-Jr., 6-3, Columbia, S.C.) are one of the most feared interior duos in the MEAC. Ross posted 7.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Smith (8.8 ppg) and guard Ariel Bursey (Sr., 5-10, Sanford, N.C.) (8.5 ppg) covered the perimeter and combined for nearly half of the team’s 3-pointers.

First Time in the Blue & Gold: Six new players joined the Aggies for the 2014-15 season including transfers Natiece Ford (Jr., 6-2, Holly Springs, N.C.) and Dana Brown (R-So., 5-7, Willow Springs, N.C.), along with fresh-men Maiya Gibson (G, 5-8, Baltimore, Md.), Kala Green (G, 5-9, Round Rock, Texas), Michelle Fitzgerald (G, 5-11, Baltimore, Md.), and Quensway-la Story (F, 6-1, Richmond, Va.).

Defense Is Their Staple: The Aggies have held their opponents to an aver-age of 53.8 points per game which leads the MEAC and is 12th in the na-tion. A&T also tops the MEAC in rebounding defense, defensive rebound percentage, and scoring margin.

Home Court Dominance: The Aggies are 34-5 at Corbett Sports Center under head coach Tarrell Robinson. Before falling 59-57 to William & Mary, A&T had held their opponents to under 50 points a game to start the year.

Road Blues: A&T is 5-8 on the road with losses at Southern Mississippi, UMES, Appalachian State, Chattanooga, VCU, No. 10 Duke, Hampton, and Norfolk State. The Aggies are averaging 55.4 points a game on the road behind Smith (11.4), Ross (9.5), and McRae (9.1).

Starting Lineups: Head coach Tarrell Robinson has used 14 different starting lineups this season. No one on the roster has started in every game. However Smith is the only player to start in 23 of A&T’s 30 games this season. Going for 12: The Aggies are currently on a 11-game winning streak which started with a 79-38 win over Delaware State on Jan. 24 at Corbett Sports Center. A&T has put together the longest winning streak out of any other MEAC women’s basketball team this season.

*Aprill McRae was also second-team All-MEAC and was third on the team in scoring (8.9).

The Aggie Attack: The North Carolina A&T women’s basketball program has been a dominant force in the MEAC in the last nine seasons. The Aggies tallied a 197-114 overall record (.633) and a 123-41 mark in the MEAC (.748) from 2005 until now. The Ag-gies won three MEAC regular-season titles in that span, including five consecutive seasons of 20-plus victories. The Aggies won 26 games in the 2008-09 season, setting a MEAC record. The Aggies garnered a No. 14 seed in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. It was the highest seed ever given to an HBCU basketball team, men’s or women’s team, up to that season. Their 15 wins during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 season were MEAC records for conference wins. The Aggies continued their winning ways in the 2013-14 season under Robinson, who was a part of those record-setting seasons and led the Aggies to their fourth appearance in program history to the WNIT tournament.

Tarrell Robinson

North Carolina A&T women’s basketball coach Tarrell Robinson continued to bring success to the program in the 2013-14 season. The Aggies ranked among one of the top defensive teams in the country and finished with a 24-7 record. A&T finished 13-3 in the MEAC and was named the 2013-14 runner-up. A&T earned its second straight bid to the WNIT under Robinson.A&T continued to dominate in Corbett Sports Center where they posted a 12-1 mark. The Aggies garnered non-conference wins over Georgia State, Stetson, Davidson, Richmond, Appalachian State, UNC Asheville, Elon, William & Mary and Campbell. A&T clinched its seventh 20-plus win season in program history and got off to its best start in history with a 7-1 mark.Robinson looked pretty good in his rookie season. In coaching the Aggies to a 22-10 season as a first-year coach, Robinson won more games than any other first-year coach in program history. He led the team to impressive wins over mid-majors on the road. The Aggies defeated Siena, UNC Wilmington and Liberty on the road. A&T also picked up home wins over Iona, William & Mary and Elon. In the conference, the Aggies went 13-3, finishing second to four-time defending MEAC champion Hampton. The Aggies eventually lost in MEAC tournament semifinals before earning a bid to play in the WNIT, where they lost at James Madison. It was the Aggies fourth postseason appearance in six seasons with Robinson being the as-sistant on two of those teams.Robinson was named the sixth head coach in the history of the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball program on May 2, 2012. He returns to A&T after spending three years as an assistant coach, recruiting coordinator and associate head coach at Virginia Commonwealth under head coach Beth Cunningham. Before his stint at VCU, Robinson spent four success-ful seasons at A&T under legendary head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. Robinson made a name for himself as a talented recruiter, having brought in highly touted players to A&T and help-ing to lead the Aggies to consecutive MEAC regular-season championships starting in 2007. Robinson, a 2001 graduate of A&T, helped Bibbs resurrect a dormant program. After a 9-19 season in 2005-06, Robinson assisted Bibbs in signing what turned out to be some of the best players in school history, starting with Fayetteville, N.C., native Ta’Wuana Cook. Cook went on to be the program’s first MEAC Rookie of the Year, its second all-time leading scorer and its all-time leader in assists. He was also instrumental in signing two-time MEAC all-tournament performer Lamona Smalley and 2009 MEAC Player of the Year Brittanie Taylor-James. When Jaleesa Sams, who was ranked as high as No. 31 nationally by Scouts.com, signed to play at A&T in 2007, the women’s basketball team had its most highly-touted recruit in history. Robinson’s recruiting efforts paid off. From 2007-09, Robinson and his recruits helped the Aggies compile a 51-15 record and their first MEAC tournament championship since 1994. The Aggies earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2009, and were awarded a 14th seed. At the time, it was the highest seed ever given to an historically black college or university. Cook, Sams, Taylor-James and Berry are all 1,000-point career scorers and all-conference performers. His tenure as an Aggie assistant also yielded 13 all-conference selections. He was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2008-09 season, after establishing himself as one of the best recruiters in the MEAC.After leaving A&T for VCU, Robinson continued to excel as a recruiter. He was promoted to associate head coach in May 2011 at VCU after serv-ing as the program’s recruiting coordinator. He helped the Rams make three-consecutive postseason appearances from 2009-12. The Rams also made it to the third round of the WNIT in 2010 and 2012. He helped land back-to-back classes that ranked among the best in the Colonial Athletic Association, including players that ranked among the Top 30 in their respective positions. His 2011-12 class included the Ram’s most highly re-cruited player in center Aprill McRae, who was named the 22nd post player in the nation by ESPN. Robinson was also invited to the prestigious Nike Villa 7 Consortium in 2011 and 2012. The Nike Villa 7 Consortium is a partnership with the VCU Center for Sport Leadership, and brings together the country’s elite assistant basketball coaches to help prepare the next generation of college basketball leaders. Prior to his successful stints at A&T and VCU, Robinson coached at the high school level and was a graduate assistant for the A&T men’s basketball program. Robinson worked for two seasons as the assistant boys basketball coach at High Point (N.C.) Andrews High School, where he helped Andrews compile a 42-13 record and a pair of appearances in the NCHSAA State Tournament. Before coaching at Andrews, Robinson spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the A&T men’s basketball program under head coach Curtis Hunter. He served as the graduate assistant for the men’s basketball team for the 2001-02 season. Robinson also made his mark as a student-athlete at A&T. He played on the men’s basketball team from 1997-2001, and had a stellar playing career at A&T. He scored 934 career points, grabbed more than 700 rebounds and blocked 35 shots during his career. He led the Aggies in rebounding his junior season. Robinson attended E.E. Smith High School in Fayetteville, N.C., where he was an Honorable Mention McDonald’s All-American and lettered three years on the varsity level. He was an all-conference and all-regional performer as a senior, and helped lead the Golden Bulls to a conference championship and re-gional runner-up finish in the state playoffs. Robinson earned his B.A., degree in psychology in 2001 and was enrolled in the graduate program at A&T, where he was a candidate for a master’s degree in Human Performance and Leisure Studies. Robinson and his wife, Kelli, have three children, Jordan, Jada and Lauren.
