  • Celebrating 130 Years of Reading Meet local authors, artists and well-known storybook characters. Enjoy family fun activities; musical performances, craft making, comics creators and more! Free shuttles will stop at the city’s top cultural venues throughout the evening. Central Library’s shuttle stop is located on Walnut Street. Friday, October 10 • 6 – 10 p.m. Art of Music Enjoy classical works presented by the CEMALA Children’s Orchestra. 7 – 8 p.m. • Fountain Courtyard

    Roaming Storybook Characters Meet your favorite storybook characters. Bring a camera for a photo op. 6 – 9 p.m. • Great Hall

Central Library will close Friday, October 10 at 5:00 p.m. for ArtNight preparations. The Library will reopen at 6:00 p.m. for ArtNight.     September 17, 2014

    I. CALL TO ORDER/INTRODUCTIONS Chair Ayala called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm. Lamanda Park Branch Update – Branch Manager Leonard Lane Branch Manager Leonard Lane gave a brief overview of activities, events and history of Lamanda Park Branch. Some new programs include an eReader and interactive storytime for children and a sensory storytime appropriate for young children with Autism. No action taken. II. COMMUNICATIONS Letters or Articles Regarding Library Services or Events. No action taken. III. ACTION ITEM - APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner Bluestone moved, and Commissioner Calkin seconded, to approve the minutes of August 20, 2014. The motion carried 6:0. Dent, Haderlein, and Wang absent. IV. COMMUNITY COMMENT There was no community comment. No action taken. V. ACTION ITEM – APPROVAL OF ANNUAL REPORT AND WORKPLA N Chair Ayala requested that the commissioners review the annual report and workplan and be prepared to vote on its acceptance. Motion by Commissioner Siegel, seconded by Commissioner Calkin moved to approve the Library Commission Annual Report and Work Plan as prepared. The motion carried 6:0. Dent, Haderlein, and Wang absent. VI. LIBRARY REPORT Librarians Angela Arzu and Pat Smith reported on the Summer Reading Challenge. The programs and activities were organized around the theme, Paws to Read. 704 Adults, 379 teens, and 3,383 children participated in the Summer Reading Challenge totaling 4,466 participants. No action taken. VII. DIRECTOR’S REPORT

    a. Update on Status of Integrated Library System (ILS) Project Director Sanders reported that both Glendale and Pasadena libraries have signed the ILS contract. They are currently working on a timeline for training for staff. No action taken.

    b. California Legislative Report Director Sanders reported that members were presented with a priorities list and draft budgetary request from the committee. The CLA board haven’t reviewed it yet.

    c. Report on Library’s Façade Restoration Gala Event Director Sanders reported that along with Commissioners Calkin, Dent and Siegel, there were approximately 250 people at the Gala on September 14. The goal was to raise $75,000, with

    the City providing matching funds. The Friends and Foundation raised $121,235. After expenses and fees of $31,949, the net proceeds are $89,286. No action taken.

    d. One City, One Story Update Director Sanders reported that the Book Selection Committee has narrowed down the selection to three top candidates. We will make the announcement at Central Library on December 1, at 6:30PM. No action taken.

    VIII. REPORT(S) FROM COMMITTEES/REPRESENTATIVES

    a. Friends of the Library Report Chair Ayala reported that Commissioner Dent is scheduled to attend the Friends meeting on September 24.

    b. Library Branch Associates Report Commissioner Siegel reported he worked with Branch Manager Pat Smith to contact community members from District 1 to attend a meeting on September 16 at La Pintoresca to establish an associates group for that branch. District 1 Field Representative Tina Williams, the principal from Washington Middle School, and approximately 25 members of the community attended the meeting. Staff’s attendance included Jan Sanders, Jennifer Addington and Catherine Hany. The meeting generated a list of ideas. He plans to circulate the list and then schedule another meeting in October to narrow the list down and concentrate on three or four items. No action taken.

    Commissioner Segal reported that now that the patio is completed, the San Rafael Associates would look at other ways to support the library. No action taken.

    IX. ANNOUNCEMENTS a. Banned Book Week September 21-27. b. Author Lisa See visit Saturday, November 1, at 2PM. c. Library’s Old Time Country Fair Saturday, November 15, noon to 4PM. d. Lucha Libros (a reading competition) September 10

    - Library commissioners Victor Gonzalez and Karla Bluestone are involved with the program and Victor will be a reader on October 1st.
