Healthcare is facing many challenges and as leaders keeping abreast of issues impacting important stakeholders is crucial. Physicians are a critical part of the healthcare delivery system. This session will address some of the top challenges they face in 2018 and some innovative ideas to partner with them in addressing those. As organizations ramp up their outpatient physician practices and independent practices seek strategic partners, they are faced with unchartered territories where thinking outside the box is necessary for success. Whether you are a student, early careerist, a seasoned executive or a physician, this session would be a great avenue to discuss best practices or learn about different approaches to the same issues that every organization faces in the healthcare industry.

Presented by Mitali Paul, MHA, MBA, FACHE Dan Hackner MD MBA Vice President, Business Development Former CMO, Care Management Wiederhold & Associates Memorial Hermann Health System

11:35 am – 12:25 pm Overcoming Self-Handicapping Leadership Course #: 180205 CPE: 1.0 Level: Entry/Intermediate Prerequisites: None

Leaders Know What They Should Do: motivate, drive outcomes, overcome adversity and resistance, create clear accountability, build trust and open dialogue, and make decisions based on productivity, not politics

Leaders Often Manage Up When uncertain of their abilities, leaders make excuses because it is effective impression management; but, these handicaps can ultimately lead to significant barriers to success.

We hope to Start a Conversation and Eliminate Self-Handicapping. Self-Handicapping is a vicious spiral to ineffective leadership.

Self-handicapping is the process where people make excuses, withdraw effort, and create obstacles in order to maintain a public or self-image. The need to appear competent drives people to self-handicap. In this session, we will explore how people use self-handicapping in business and leadership as a means of impression management and how it eventually leads down to poor leadership. AT the conclusion, our participants will leave with a deeper understanding of self-handicapping and how to overcome it personally and organizationally.

Presented by Dr. Jordan Mitchell Assistant Professor University of Houston Clear Lake

1:15 pm – 2:05 pm Population Health: Changing the Flood into a Workflow Course #: 180206 CPE: 1.0 Level: Intermediate Prerequisites: None

This session will include a discussion of the challenges facing clinicians as we attempt to address population health. Traditionally, healthcare has been left up to the patient: you get care when you make an appointment. Under the new value-based reimbursement plans, providers are encouraged to track patient needs and reach out to patients to improve compliance with prevention measures and management of chronic disease. In an era where offices have lean staffing models and physicians are already feeling stretched, how can this be accomplished? Suggestions for re-deployment of office staff and expanded roles for extenders will be discussed.

Presented by Dr. Jeffrey Steinbauer Professor, Chief Medical Officer Baylor College of Medicine, CHI Texas Division Physician Network
