Aged Care.
kodalighting.com.au02
Australia’s population is aging, and the number of people seeking aged care facilities is set to rise in coming years.
High quality living spaces are important for the wellbeing of retirees and healthcare staff alike.

Good lighting has been clinically proven to reduce the symptoms associated with depression and dementia
including low mood and difficulty sleeping. Good lighting helps to maintain a healthy circadian rhythm, especially
essential in old age.

Corridors and Circulation
Shadowing can cause confusion in patients with dementia and poor eyesight and pose a
dangerous trip hazard for residents and staff alike.
Homogenous and direct light distribution in corridors eliminates dark spots.

Specialised lighting which illuminates potential danger spots and direction signs,
including emergency exits, is key for everyone.
If the facility has stairs, each step should be well-lit and easily visible. Each doorway
should also be clearly illuminated, to assist residents in finding their rooms.

Reduced level night lighting should be in place in all corridors and exit
passageways within the aged care facility where normal lighting may
diminish during the night.
Night lights should be spaced in order to evenly illuminate all areas including
stairs, ramps and doorways.

Resident Rooms
An eye-level wall light is ideal for marking out the entrance to a resident’s room and their room number. Warm colour
temperatures (2700-3000K) and custom lighting scenarios allow each resident to feel cosy and at ease.
We supplied Feelux strip lighting to illuminate these 'memory boxes' at The Terraces in Paddington, which
helped residents find their rooms. Each memory box would correspond to a resident's hobby or loved one; this provided
comfort for those living with Alzheimer's and dementia.

Simple operation is essential for patients. It is very important to make sure that residents can find their way round their rooms safely at night in order to use the bathroom. Light should always be readily available at hand.
Well positioned lighting also assists staff when they are attending to residents at
night.

The goal is to perfectly balance the residents’ needs and comfort
with the care staff’s requirements. By enabling
simple and autonomous lighting operation, along with the
integration of natural light, the best possible lighting efficiency
is achieved.

Bedside Lighting
Dimmable bedside lighting for residents is a must-have in addition to normal room lighting. Harsh, hospital-like task lights
should be avoided.
The switch should be placed within easy reach of the resident when they’re in bed; it should also be two-way switched from the
room entrance.
