“Dutch Elm Disease (DED) isa serious threat to elm trees in Al-berta communities,” says JanetFeddes-Calpas, executive direc-tor for the Society to PreventDutch Elm Disease (STOPDED).“It is also a disease that can beprevented. At present, Albertahas the largest DED-free Ameri-can elm stand in the world, and itis important to protect this valu-able resource. The Society toPrevent Dutch Elm Disease(STOPDED) is asking for Alber-tans’ assistance to save theprovince’s beautiful elm treesfrom this deadly disease.”

DED is caused by a fungusthat clogs the elm tree’s waterconducting system, causing thetree to die, usually within one ortwo seasons. The fungus is pri-marily spread from one elm treeto another by three species ofbeetles, the smaller European,the native and the banded elmbark beetle. These beetles are at-tracted to weak and dying trees,which serve as breeding sites forthem. Once the beetles have pu-pated and turned into adults, theyleave the brood gallery and fly tohealthy elms to feed, transportingthe fungus on their bodies fromone tree to the next. Monitoringfor the beetles is done annuallythroughout the province bySTOPDED.

“The smaller elm bark beetleshave been found throughout theprovince in low numbers and nowthe banded elm bark beetle isfound in larger numbers through-

out the City of Medicine Hat,”says Feddes-Calpas. “For thisreason, it is imperative to be evenmore vigilant.

“Leaves on a DED-infectedelm will wilt or droop, curl and be-come brown. This is referred to asflagging, and appears in mid-June to mid-July. Later in the sea-son, leaves on infected treesusually turn yellow and drop pre-maturely. Leaf symptoms are ac-companied by brown stainingunder the bark. All suspiciouselms must be tested in a lab, aservice STOPDED funds.”

Albertans are asked to take amoment and find out how theycan help save Alberta’s elms:

• Be aware of the Alberta ElmPruning Ban between April 1 andSeptember 30. The beetles aremost active at this time and canbe attracted to the scent of freshtree cuts, possibly infecting ahealthy elm.

• Keep elm trees healthy, andvigorous.

• Water elms well from Apriluntil mid-August. To allow the treeto harden off for the winter, wa-tering should be stopped mid-Au-gust followed by a good soakingor two before freeze-up.

• Prune ONLY between Octo-ber 1 to March 31. Remove deadbranches and trees as they canprovide beetle habitat.

• Dispose of all elm wood im-mediately by burning, burying orchipping.

• Report all suspect trees tothe DED Hotline at 1-877-837-ELMS. A confirmed DED treemust be removed immediately toprevent further spread.

To enhance prevention of thisserious disease:

• Do NOT transport or storeelm firewood at any time!

• DED and the beetles are de-clared pests under the AlbertaAgricultural Pests Act making it il-legal to do so.

• Do NOT transport elm fire-wood into Alberta! Firewood isconfiscated at all the Alberta-Montana border crossings.

• Do NOT prune elms be-tween April 1 to September 30.

Dutch Elm Disease SummertimeAwareness

For five years, SAGE Savorieshas been providing wholesomemeals for seniors in Edmonton.The business, operated by theSeniors Association of GreaterEdmonton (SAGE), provideshome style meals for seniorsthrough their Sunshine Cafedowntown and through frozenmeals that can be picked up atthe Cafe or delivered to a senior’shome.

“We believe supplying seniorswith healthy meals will help themstay in their own homes longer,and we are providing a nicheservice that other senior foodpurveyors are not filling,” explainsWayne Sand, Certified Chef deCuisine and food services man-ager.

Currently, SAGE Savories pre-pares over 1600 frozen mealservings and 300 soups permonth, as well as desserts. “Wehave five soup varieties, six

desserts and 18 meals,” statesSand. “Four of our soups andnine of our meals meet theHealth Check™ Menu Optionscriteria. We worked with theCanadian Heart and StrokeFoundation to ensure that themeals meet the specific nutrientspecifications developed by theHealth Check™ program.”

Nutritional analyses werecompleted as needed to ensurethe labelling met CFIA require-ments. “I always try to preparehealthy foods, so it was good tofind out so many of our productsmet the criteria,” says Sand. “Weare the first senior serviceagency to receive certification.”

When Sand first started work-ing at SAGE, he adapted homestyle recipes and prepared com-fort foods he thought seniorswould enjoy. The Health Check™Menu features meals such asbeef stew, roast beef, roastturkey and stuffing, shepherd’spie, poached salmon filet, andvegetarian chilli. The chicken andveggie stir fry won a 2010/2011Alberta Food for Health Award –a Premier’s Award, for healthy Al-berta food sold through foodservice.

Every meal prepared at SAGESavouries includes a protein,vegetable and starch component.

Soup varieties include beef veg-etable and barley, chicken noo-dle, green split pea and ham, andtomato vegetable rice, all ofwhich appear on the HealthCheck™ list.

SAGE Savories also offers tra-ditional menu options, such asnavy bean and bacon soup, andmeals consisting of glazed ham,breaded pork cutlet, chicken potpie, a Ukrainian plate and three-cheese lasagne. Desserts in-clude rice and raisin pudding,bread pudding, apple crumbleand strawberry slice. Meals arepackaged in convenient, singleserve portions and sold in a mi-crowave and oven safe contain-ers.

“Our meals are very popularwith seniors who want a tastymeal without the hassle of cook-ing for themselves,” says Sand.“We provide them with goodheating instructions and ensurethey have all the nutritional infor-mation for each meal they order.”

“I have been asked whetherthey are good for diabetics, and,after checking with their doctorsand dieticians, many people havefound they can eat our products,”says Sand. The frozen mealsallow them to stay in their ownhome, as many of them don’thave the energy or interest in

cooking for themselves.“We pride ourselves on provid-

ing a healthy meal option forthem that has a good taste pro-file too, so people will enjoy eat-ing the meals. They will push ameal away if it doesn’t tastegood.”

The Savouries meal servicetargets doctors, dieticians andsocial workers to create aware-ness of what meals they provide.“I would like to expand ourkitchen and move into our owncommissary for preparation ofthe frozen meals, but we have toensure we have the volume ofsales to justify our move,” saysSand.

As a non-profit agency, Sandhas pushed SAGE to treat theSavories service as a social en-terprise so that the profits gener-ated from the meals can be puttowards other costs such as ad-ministration and rent.

Seniors can pick up meals atthe Sunshine Cafe in Edmontonor order meals for delivery by acadre of volunteers. “We do askfor a minimum $50 purchase,”Sand adds. “Otherwise, you paya $5 delivery fee.”

A new Conservation CroppingProtocol is now available for useby farmers to get paid for makingenvironmental improvements. Byincreasing soil carbon levelsthrough no till management andreducing greenhouse gas emis-sions from fuel use, farmers canearn carbon offset credits.

The newest opportunity is forfarmers in the Brown and DarkBrown soil zones who can re-place areas of summerfallow withno tilled crops. “A growing cropseeded with low disturbance notill equipment increases biologi-cal carbon capture and storagecompared with uncropped fallowfields,” notes Sheilah Nolan, cli-

mate change specialist with Al-berta Agriculture and Rural De-velopment. “The soil carbonincrease from cropping summer-fallowed land is more than dou-ble the soil carbon increase fromno till management, so carboncredits more than double.”

Carbon credits are based onthe amount of decrease in areaof summerfallowed land at theend of five years, compared witha three-year average baseline forthe same farmed area. Previoushistory of summerfallow activityand the use of no till crop man-agement must be confirmed withrecords.

Companies who buy the offset

credits are regulated under Al-berta’s Specified Gas EmittersRegulation (2002). Companiescan use carbon credits as a wayto meet their requirement to re-duce greenhouse gas emissionintensities by 12 per cent eachyear. Carbon credits can be cre-ated from farm practice improve-ments that have a provenscientific basis for lower green-house gas emissions, are aboveand beyond business as usual,and can be verified by independ-ent third parties.

The new Conservation Crop-ping Protocol includes updates tothe old Tillage System Manage-ment Protocol. The new protocol

adjusts for higher rates of con-servation tillage, which meansthat there’s less land to shift fromfull till. Reduced till no longerqualifies for offset credit, but no tillcredits are available for all soilzones in Alberta until at least2017 when a review is scheduled.

The new protocol also lists thepositive proof requirementsneeded to meet new verificationstandards for all protocols in theAlberta Offset System, effectiveJanuary 1, 2012. Positive proofmeans that only go-forward cred-its are allowed, so no historic off-sets can be claimed.

“Some of the records neededto meet the new standards are

the same as those needed for theTillage protocol,” says Paul Jung-nitsch, greenhouse gas offsetagrologist with Alberta Agricultureand Rural Development. “Otherrecords such as crop plans, pho-tos of equipment, or calculationsof cropped areas and soil distur-bance can be collected by farm-ers themselves or with the help ofprofessional agrologists.”

A detailed checklist of evi-dence needed to claim offsetcredits using the new protocol isavailable online. Along with newincentives for environmental im-provements, this protocol givesopportunities for farmers to be-come familiar with the verifiable

records needed for other types ofemerging environmental mar-kets. Management to reducegreenhouse gases also bringsbenefits of improved productionefficiencies and increased adap-tation to climate change.

Funds for these initiativeswere provided by Agriculture andAgri-Food Canada through theAgricultural Flexibility fund, aspart of Canada’s Economic Ac-tion Plan. This is a cost-sharedproject between Agriculture andRural Development and Agricul-ture and Agri-Food Canada.
