“In years when grain wascheap, it was logical to make upfor any nutrient shortfalls with abit of extra grain,” says KenZiegler, beef and forage special-ist with Alberta Agriculture andRural Development. “An extrapound or two of barley coveredup any nutrient deficiencies fromthe hay and backgroundedcalves did fine. Today, because ofthe rising cost of grain, the questto control the cost per pound ofgain is more challenging.”

The challenge this fall will beto achieve adequate animalgrowth with minimal grain. Thisnew dynamic in the feeding in-dustry drives the need for qualityforage to do the job. Considerthese suggestions and take thenecessary steps to achieve qual-

ity forage for backgroundedcalves this coming fall and win-ter:

• Harvest the hay crop with aquality goal in mind. Considerthat total digestible nutrients(TDN) of 65 per cent or more willprovide back grounded calveswith enough energy to grow atleast 1.75 average daily gain(ADG) or more when fed hayalone. Using implants andionophores, or raising the feedTDN improves the calf perform-ance to 2lbs ADG.

• Stage of maturity at harvestis the most important factor in for-age quality. As plants mature, for-age quality declines. This isbecause the proportion of fibrousstems increases while leaf con-tent decreases. Managing the

cutting date is one practice thatdoes not cost more but has in-credible implications for foragequality. Cutting grasses at theearly bloom stage or legumesduring the bud to early flowerstage will help ensure high qual-ity hay. This may mean cuttinganywhere from 7 to 14 days ear-lier than another year.

• Many losses are visible suchas leaf shatter; however otherlosses such as respiration are in-visible. Aim to reduce field lossesby cutting early in the morning.Use as wide a swath as possibleto increase solar drying. Speeddry down by raking the windrowswhen the moisture content is be-tween 40 to 50 per cent. Balewhen the moisture content isnear 18 per cent or higher if

using forage preservatives.• Nearly all harvesting losses

are due to leaf shatter. Leavesdry down three to five timesfaster than stems and becomevery brittle at moisture levelsbelow 30 per cent. The risk ofnutrient losses and weatherdamage can be reduced by har-vesting the forage crop at 40 to55 per cent moisture. Choppedsilage, plastic wrapping or tubingbales are all options for harvest-ing high moisture forage crops.

• If you do decide to dry thefeed down to conventional hay,consider using bale wrap insteadof twine. Bale wrap sheds rainfallbetter than twine. The majority ofthe hay within a hay bale is in thefirst four inches. Reducing stor-age losses of the quality feed in-

creases the amount of feed avail-able this fall.

• Ramp up your storage strat-egy. As quality feed becomesmore valuable, the economics ofstoring it well changes. Considerplacing the bales on high welldrained ground with a layer ofstraw underneath. The cost oftarps becomes incidental whenstoring quality feed compared toaverage feed. Hay sheds offer ex-cellent value in storing high qual-ity feed.

• Once baled, haul the feed offof the field immediately and get itunder cover. Early harvestingmay provide the opportunity for asecond harvest. In grass basedforage stands, second cut growthoften has a high leaf:stem ratioresulting in high quality forage for

use as hay, silage or pasture.• Feed test the forage early in

the year, preferably after 20 daysfrom hay baling or immediatelyduring silage. The results will tellyou whether you have met yourgoal for quality feed this winter orif you need to adjust your plans.Remember that high quality for-age can always be mixed off withstraw for your cows if it turns outto be inadequate for your calves.

“Happy feeding calves thiscoming fall,” says Ziegler. “Maythey be tall, thick and slick byspring with a minimum of grainconsumed over the winter.”

An AVAC Ltd investee, Red-Moon Custom Petfood, cele-

brated the grand opening of anew production plant in Cross-

field on April 28, 2011. The Red-Moon plant is a key achievement

for this rural Alberta company,the first Canadian plant to offercustom-made pet food online.With the new plant, RedMooncan now provide their privatelabel goods to select companiesfor distribution.

“We are the only soft dog foodplant in Canada that can scaleproducts,” said Jason Bailey,RedMoon founder and CEO,“using our own products, processand formula to create other-branded products for differentcompanies.”

AVAC provided RedMoon witha $700,000 funding commitmentto meet their development plans.“AVAC is pleased to work withRedMoon,” said Ross Bricker,AVAC president and CEO. “They

represent key areas for us, andfor Alberta, including the pet foodindustry, primary agriculturalproducts, and the rural agricul-ture economy.

“Our investment with Red-Moon is helping their establishedbusiness, supporting their marketgrowth in Canada and the U.S.and assisting in continued mar-ket expansion.”

“We have been positioningourselves to produce everythingin our own plant for two years,”added Bailey. “New product de-velopment is also key, and wecan now do testing on site. Thiswas an important milestone inthe AVAC funding we received.”

Along with Alberta FinancialServices Corporation (AFSC),

the Alberta Livestock and MeatAgency (ALMA) invested in Red-Moon. Gordon Cove, ALMA pres-ident and CEO, says theagency’s investment in this proj-ect helps the industry becomemore profitable and sustainable.

“ALMA’s Growing Forwardgrant to RedMoon is part of aroadmap for working with indus-try to increase the demand of Al-berta and Canada’s meat andlivestock products,” said Cove.

Statistics suggest that youthaged 15 to 29, many learningabout agriculture for the first time,make up a significant portion ofseasonal farm workers in Alberta.Employers are responsible toprovide all workers with essentialtraining to ensure their safety onthe job regardless of their back-ground.

“It’s important to address threeareas in preparation for a safefarming season,” says KendaLubeck, farm safety coordinatorwith Alberta Agriculture and RuralDevelopment. “Employees mustknow the job, know the hazardsassociated with the job, andknow the action required to han-dle hazardous situations.”

Knowing the job means ensur-ing all workers are properlytrained ahead of time for eachnew task they need to perform.Farms have become larger, andmore inexperienced labour isbeing hired. In addition increasedcomplexity and technological ad-vancements in farm machineryand production processes em-phasize the need for new workertraining.

Tips to effectively train new

workers effectively:• provide comprehensive

training for complex tasks suchas equipment operation or chem-ical application

• explain and demonstratetechniques that will make a taskeasier

“Identification of hazards is acritical step to safe farming,” addsLubeck. “Especially for new oryoung workers, hazard assess-ment will help them plan appro-priately to maintain safe workpractices.”

Help new workers learn torecognize hazards:

• alert them to specific haz-ards and how to avoid them –such as working with livestock,chemicals, tractors, farm imple-ments, and other equipment

• include safety information in

the job description, hiringprocess, orientation and training,performance reviews, compen-sation and disciplinary actions

• explain risks of exposure todust, noise, chemicals and toxicmaterials, and how to prevent re-lated incidents or injuries

• ensure all employees wearsuitable clothing for the environ-ment

ards that come up in the workand what can be done to avoid ormanage them – ensure this is im-plemented

• prevent back injuries by en-suring new employees under-stand correct lifting techniquesand monitor staff on the job to en-

sure they are lifting properly• encourage workers to report

unsafe conditions and equip-ment. Timely action can savemoney and reduce the potentialfor injuries

• provide direction ahead oftime about how to handle anemergency situation

• provide access to two-waycommunication such as a mobilephone or radio

• ensure all workers and fam-ily members know how to contactemergency services

• ensure at least some staffand family members have currentfirst-aid training

• teach employees how to usefire extinguishers – in the handsof a trained employee, a small

fire extinguisher could be the dif-ference between a minor brushfire and the loss of a farmer’slivelihood
