Overview of Nehemiah• Nehemiah supplemented and completed the work of

Ezra• After completing his work, Nehemiah returned to

the Persian palace of Shushan • After Nehemiah leaves, moral degradation begins to

return back to Jerusalem• Nehemiah again returns after a two-year absence• With vigor, Nehemiah seeks to rid the nation of the

immoral behavior – he was the last of the Persian governors sent to Judah (it was later annexed)

• We know little of his remaining life (died 413 BC)

Geo-Political Atmosphere• Egyptian revolt against Greek military presence• This reality caused Persian to value strongholds

such as Judea – prompting a continuous build-up of key cities

• Likewise, Persia needed stable populations inhabiting these cities

• Therefore, it was in Persia’s strategic interest to fortify cities like Jerusalem and to ensure that the population was strongly governed with little to no change of insurrection

Page 14: After The Fall Ezra and Nehemiah Israel Confesses Their Sins And Makes a Covenant Nehemiah 11-12

Geopolitical Situation• 612 BC — Fall of the Assyrian Empire• 587 BC – Nebuchadnezzar’s third attack on Jerusalem,

remaining people carried away• 546 BC – Cyrus becomes king of Persia• 539 BC – Cyrus conquers Babylon• 535 BC – Second temple reconstruction begins (approx)• 515 BC – Second temple reconstruction completes• 480 BC – The Battle of Thermopylae (Persians against Greeks)• 458 BC – Ezra returns to Jerusalem• 458 BC – Cincinnatus is named dictator of the Roman Republic• 454 BC – Athens loses a fleet and possibly as many as 50,000

men in a failed attempt to aid an Egyptian revolt against Persia • 445 BC – Artaxerxes I gives Nehemiah permission to rebuild

Jerusalem

Levites

• Levi was one of the 12 sons of Jacob• Jacob, grandson of Abraham, is later called Israel• Levites are the decedents of Levi and included

Moses• Received cities but no tribal land "because the Lord

the God of Israel himself is their possession“• Served particular religious duties for the Israelites

and had political responsibilities as well• Charged with ministering to the Kohanim (priests)

and keeping watch over the Tabernacle (Num 18)

Page 16: After The Fall Ezra and Nehemiah Israel Confesses Their Sins And Makes a Covenant Nehemiah 11-12

Kohanim (priests)• Should be a direct male descendant of the Biblical

Aaron, brother of Moses (didn’t work out that way)• Performed specific duties with the daily and festival

sacrificial offerings• Kohen Gadol or Kohen ha-Gadol is the title of High

Priest • High Priest became nothing more than a political

appointee in many cases (Solomon, Abiathar, Zadok)

• Later became the presiding officer of the Sanhedrin

Populating Jerusalem(Nehemiah 11:1-36)

• Those who will live in Jerusalem (11:1)– Jerusalem had been depopulated, why?– But the city had been rebuilt (temple, walls)– Needed people to help secure and operate the city– People cast lots to see who would live in Jerusalem– 9/10’s were to dwell in other cities

• Blessing the citizens of Jerusalem (11:2)– Some men willingly move to the city– They are blessed– They felt an obligation

Page 18: After The Fall Ezra and Nehemiah Israel Confesses Their Sins And Makes a Covenant Nehemiah 11-12

• Priestly and Levitical families (12:1-11)– Came up with Zerubbabel– Around 535 B.C.

• Priests in the days of Joiakim (12:12-21)– Joiakim was father of Eliashib, the high priest

• Levites during the reign of Darius the Persian– Around 520 B.C.– Some lived during the time of Nehemiah and Ezra– Around 450 B.C.

Page 20: After The Fall Ezra and Nehemiah Israel Confesses Their Sins And Makes a Covenant Nehemiah 11-12

Dedication Ceremony(Nehemiah 12:27-47)

• Gathering the Levites for the ceremony (12:27-29)– All Levites are sought out– Needed them to lead the people in worship and praise– Celebrate with thanksgiving and singing

• Purification (12:30)– Priest and Levites purify themselves– Next, they purify the people– What is the New Testament way (1 John 1:9)– Surroundings are purified

Page 21: After The Fall Ezra and Nehemiah Israel Confesses Their Sins And Makes a Covenant Nehemiah 11-12

• Two choirs lead Jerusalem in praise (12:31-43)– Called thanksgiving choirs– God leads them to rejoice with great joy– All worship with great joy

• Other events of that day (12:44-47)– People brought their offerings, first fruits, tithes– Gave to the Levites to support the ministry– Singers and gatekeepers keep the charge of God– Consecrated holy things for the Levites

• This will lead to reading from the Book of Moses
