Supervised Play: Early Learners -Grade 4Supervised Play meets in the Pre-Primary classrooms at Laurel which are convenientlylocated near our beautiful playgrounds and spacious Multipurpose Room. Classrooms aredivided by grades to offer a quiet space for homework, a relaxing place to read a book, enjoya snack or a place to run and play. Pre-registration is required.

Middle School Den: Grades 5 - 8Life in the Middle School isn’t predictable. School plays, sports and other extracurricularprogramming demand flexible options for Middle School parents. All Middle School studentswho remain at Laurel after 3:45 p.m. are required to be under the supervision of an adulteither through the Middle School Den or in other structured programs such as clubs,rehearsals or sports. For this reason, we offer special pricing options for our Middle Schoolfamilies including trimester pricing which acccomodates Fall/Winter/Spring sports seasons.Pricing varies based on length of season. The Middle School Den provides a supervised,comfortable environment for students when they are not involved in an after-school activityto complete homework, enjoy a snack and a good book or play a relaxing game with a friend.Students involved in Middle School activities who are not picked up at the conclusion of theactivity, will be sent to the Middle School Den and will be billed a drop-in fee for the day.

Families may register for a single day or by sports season. Pre-registration is required.There is also a drop-in fee which is billed monthly. Prices for classes are in addition toMiddle School Den fees.

After School at Laurel Classes offer something for everyone! Inspired learning continues at Laurel after the school day ends. In addition to Laurel’s Supervised Play and Middle School Den, we are pleased to offer the following classes which may be purchasedseparately:

The Laurel School Music AcademyLessons offered Monday – Friday, between 3:30 - 6:00 p.m. at Laurel’s Lyman Campus.After School at Laurel offers child care coverage at a discounted rate to Music Academystudents on the days of their lessons. Pre-registration is required.

The Music Academy is a year-long after-school program. Laurel students and their siblingsmay sign up for traditional private music instruction, Suzuki violin instruction, and RockBand classes. Each Music Academy program consists of 30 lessons, two of which will berecital preparation classes, and two recitals. The two recitals (with accompaniment) areincluded with the cost of registration. The recitals will take place on December 16, 2014and May 12, 2015 (Pre-Primary & Primary Schools at 5:00 p.m., Middle & Upper Schoolsat 7:00 p.m.)

Traditional Private LessonsThe Laurel School Music Academy offers private instruction in the following instruments:violin, viola, cello, guitar, piano, voice and flute. Our faculty members are accomplishedperformers and teachers with advanced degrees from highly reputable universities andconservatories. Many of our teachers are also on faculty at institutions such as TheCleveland Institute of Music, The Music Settlement, and Cleveland State University.

Cost: $1000/year for weekly 30-minute lessons (longer lessons are pro-rated)

Suzuki ProgramMore than 50 years ago, Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki began to apply the basicprinciples of language acquisition to the learning of music, and called his method themother-tongue approach. The ideas of parent responsibility, loving encourage-ment, andconstant repetition are some of the special features of the Suzuki approach.

The Laurel School Music Academy is pleased to offer Suzuki violin instruction. This afterschool program consists of weekly private lessons as well as a weekly group class. Suzukilessons are offered to students ages four and older. Private lessons will be scheduled basedon the availability of the teacher, student and parent. Group classes will be held between3:30 and 4:15 p.m. on Thursday afternoons.

Cost: $1300/year for weekly 30-minute private lessons as well as weekly group classes

Rock BandMiddle School and Upper School guitarists, pianists, drummers and vocalists will be placed in small groups according to age and ability. Students must be enrolled in private lessons (either at Laurel or elsewhere) to ensure that each member of the band is able to play their individual part. Each band will receive a 45-minute weekly group lesson.

Adventure Girls! Experience the adventure that all of the girls are raving about! Students love their time inAdventure Girls as they stretch themselves through challenging games, indoor & outdooractivities including rock climbing, snow shoeing, paddle boarding and the use of the ProjectAdventure Course at the Butler Campus. Field trips including, but not limited to, indoor rockclimbing, cross-country skiing, hiking, or tobogganing are included in the price of the class.

Please note: Adventure Girls is offered on a trimester basis for Middle School students in order to accommodate sports and performing arts. Each season in Adventure Girls will be different based upon the weather. Minimum8 students. Prices vary based upon length of season.

Little RacquetsThis nationally-renowned program helps students progress through the beginning stages of tennis. Students are engaged in stimulating, playful activities that enhance their physicaland emotional abilities.

Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 2: Thursdays, 3:30 - 4:20 p.m.Cost: $200/semester for 10 sessions per semester

YogaA perfect ending to the school day! Students will learn the basic poses of yoga andbreathing through age-appropriate techniques. This class introduces children to a fitnessregime which can continue throughout life.

She’s Sew CraftyIs your daughter inspired by sewing, jewelry & fashion design and exploring other arts and crafts? Let her unwind at Laurel after school as she engages in all kinds of creativeexpression and we’ll even clean up the mess! In a world where it is rare for anything to be handmade, a child’s sense of accomplishment is enhanced by their exploration withpatterning, constructing and designing. Working with textile materials offers an unusualopportunity to develop coordination and dexterity.

“Express yourself!” with Lake Erie Ink - a writing space for youthLake Erie Ink helps students develop their writing skills, writing confidence, and writingexperience, through individual and collaborative project-based learning that explores diversestrategies, genres and media. Students are encouraged to take creative risks by providingan environment that encourages self-expression and the sharing of ideas.

Grades 3 - 4: Fridays, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.Cost: $250/semester

Write poems, stories, comics and plays with Lake Erie Ink. Activities will vary and be tailoredto student interests. Possibilities include: poetry, memoir, stories, plays and comics.

Grades 5 - 8: Fridays, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.Cost: $100/Fall Semester; $250/Winter Semester; $140/Spring Semester

• Fall Trimester: “Share Your Story” - Write poetry, short fiction, and true stories.

Inlet Dance TheatreInlet Dance Theatre is one of the region’s most exciting professional contemporary dancecompanies. Inlet’s Classes are taught by the professional dancers of Inlet Dance Theatre.Students are introduced to Hawkins-based Release Technique and are guided throughexploration of space, music and movement of the body. Students begin to develop corestrength, an increased range of motion, coordination and a strong sense of ensemble.

Laurel Cooks!Create delicious recipes straight from the garden and explore the basics of cooking andbaking in this hands-on class which focuses on seasonal menus. Students will learn all about fresh ingredients providing kids with positive, fun experiences and increasing thelikelihood that they will try and enjoy these foods.

This class will introduce students to the principles ofrobotics, computer programming, and teamwork. Studentswill use their imagination and critical thinking skills todesign, program and control fully functional robotic modelsthat will accomplish specific tasks by using software to plan,test and modify sequences of instructions.

Art & Design Class Students will be guided through projects which involve various mediums throughout thesemester. Each session will also allow time for drawing and painting as students desire.Examples of projects include:

• Sushi scrolls - print sushi rice shapes, draw and cut out a manga character, collage on filling/ toppings, and the character.

• Embossed pendants or earrings

• Hammered aluminum wire pendants

• Textured clay tiles

• Painting

Animating Kids Stop-Motion Class Stop-motion animation is a fun way to encourage conceptual thinking in students. Planningthe animation challenges students to visually lay out a scene frame-by-frame so the viewerunderstands the story or concept as it unfolds. Writing also becomes more meaningful sinceevery animation starts with a script. With stop-motion, figurines, crafts, or any hands-onmaterials can be used to tell stories, recreate a historical event, or explain a science conceptsuch as the life cycle of an organism or transformation of a solid to liquid to gas.

Days/Times: After School at Laurel follows the standard school calendar. When Laurel School is insession for only half a day or is not in session at all, After School does NOT meet. After School atLaurel will NOT meet the last day of school. e fall semester begins August 26, 2014 (September 3for Pre-Primary) and ends December 19, 2014. Classes will not meet the week of anksgiving, butSupervised Play and Middle School Den will be available that week on Monday and Tuesday only.e spring semester begins January 6, 2015 and ends June 5, 2015. When classes are not meeting,students are welcome to attend Supervised Play or Middle School Den under the drop-in option;daily drop-in rate of $30 will apply.

Pick-Up: Pick-up from all Classes and Supervised Play is in Laurel’s Pre-Primary Circle. Please call216.455.0153 to have your child escorted to the Pre-Primary door.
