Introduction
This snapshot provides an overview
of the balance of trade between
Inbound and Outbound Travel for
Year end of December 2019.
It uses information provided by the
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
Overseas Arrivals and Departures
(OAD) data set.

The ABS collects data on all
travellers entering and leaving
Australia through the Inbound
Passenger Card.
This section displays the number of
international tourists entering and
Australians departing Australia as
of December Year end 2017 and
2018.
For travel and tourism to be
sustainable it is imperative that
the trade between each country
is balanced and this snapshot
tracks overall benefits to each
country.
The countries chosen are the
major Australian source markets
and desired destinations.

Key Highlights
• During December 2018, short-
term visitor arrivals (782,700
movements) increased 0.6%
when compared with
November 2018 (777,900
movements).
• This followed a monthly
increase of 1.1% for October
2018 and a monthly decrease
of 0.1% for November 2018.
• Inbound passengers for the
2018 calendar year of
9,248,700 was an increase of
4.5% from the 2017 calendar
year.

Key Highlights
• India demonstrated the highest
growth rate in 2018 of 18.1%,
increasing from previous year
growth of 15.7%.
• China remained the highest
source market by volume with
1,444,900 visitors in 2018.
• However, China growth of 4.4%,
slowed from 2017 growth rate
of 13.2%.
• Other countries showing growth
in 2018 from 2017 were
Argentina and Chile (both 23%)
and France (10.4%).

highest growth rebounding
back from previous year

• An overall growth of 4.8%
occurred from 2017 to 2018 in
outbound travellers.
