Is delivering services to each individual directly the only way to scale? Is there a multiplier or cascading effect if you instead select and train youth leaders who can in turn train other youth and so on? Can you think of a time when a beneficiary got it and carried your programs forward on their own?

Launch a viral youth empowerment multiplier

Meet the ALA grad leaders and their initiatives

• What is the need that you are addressing? • How does your initiative meet this need? • What have you achieved so far in the course of running your

initiatives?

Discussion issues • Can you talk about one beneficiary of yours that is reaching more people e.g.,

viral effect? • How do you think about tradeoffs between short-term and long-term? • How do you think about the trade-off of quality and quantity? • What assumptions are we making when we build large group, short duration

programs? • Are we addressing long term problem with short term solutions? • Is it difficult to scale flexible approaches – because scale implies standardization. • How do you create a virtuous cycle of youth helping other youth?

Page 10: African Youth Engagement Goes Viral: Young Leaders Discuss ... · Tanzania . African Leadership Academy, Westminster College : ALA, Trinity College, Yale University . ALA, College

Discussion questions for attendees

• Can you think of examples when selecting youth who demonstrate leadership capacity may actually drive more impact and ultimately reach more people?

• How do you think about short-term and medium-term tradeoffs in your work?

• How can we get better at identifying which youth have the inclination and motivation to help others? What support do they need?

• How do we better match youth with specific interventions (based on behavioral, mindset and demographic characteristics as well as the usual criteria of academic results and level of disadvantage)?

“My interactions with fellow students as well as the classes, especially entrepreneurship and leadership, have empowered me and showed me what great potential lies in young people.” - Joseph Munyambanza, DRC/Uganda, ALA grad panelist

“I remember my first classes at ALA. The teacher asked us what we thought and we went through our notes to report back what we had read. Then the light when on in my head, the teacher was asking for my thoughts. That was transformational.” - Sheila Chukwulodzie, Nigeria, ALA grad at Amherst College

ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP AT THE CORE

The study and practice of Entrepreneurial Leadership is at the core of ALA’s academic program:

• Experiential Learning – engaging in periodic activities and games that serve as simulations

• Project-based Learning – practicing design-thinking while balancing personal and team dynamics

• Socratic Method – facilitating discussions by creating effective inquiry-based environments

• Grade-free Environment – no A, B, Cs instead we use 360-degree assessments and surveys to foster development

ENTREPRENEURIAL THINKING + VALUES-BASED LEADERSHIP + BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SKILLS

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA

We travel across Africa every year looking for exceptional young people who are demonstrating immense leadership potential. What exactly are we looking for? • PURPOSE • LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL • ACADEMIC READINESS

Page 18: African Youth Engagement Goes Viral: Young Leaders Discuss ... · Tanzania . African Leadership Academy, Westminster College : ALA, Trinity College, Yale University . ALA, College

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

• Infusing direct experience with the learning environment and content

• Example: “Compassion Experiential”

– To teach empathy and compassion to our young leaders, we simulated life in a refugee camp for 24 hours

– Young leaders divided into the security forces, the refugees the UNHRC volunteers, and the media and journalists.

African youth unemployment “High vacancy rates in the presence of large scale unemployment confirm the existence of skills mismatches”

“In a survey among experts on 36 African countries about the major challenges youth face in labor markets, 54% found a mismatch of skills between what job seekers have to offer and what employers require to be a major obstacle.”

“In South Africa the situation is even more extreme, with 3 million young people in NEET and 600 000 unemployed university graduates versus 800 000 vacancies (The Economist)”
