ANGOLA AND THE International Fund for AgriculturalDevelopment (IFAD) have signed a US$2.1mn financingagreement for artisanal fishing and aquaculture, according tothe United Nations agency.Of that amount, US$11.1mn will be disbursed by IFAD, with theAngolan government contributing the remaining US$1mn for aproject that directly benefits more than 10,000 artisanalfishermen, indicated the statement released by IFAD.The project also indirectly benefits 5,000 processers andsmall rural businesses linked to fish marketing, as well asnearly 800 families involved in small-scale aquaculture,notably women who head families, young people and adultsfrom vulnerable groups.The project will be implemented in the Angolan provinces ofBengo, Cuanza Norte, Luanda and Malange. It aims toreduce poverty and improve food and nutritional securityamong families dedicated to that activity.The statement added that since 1991 IFAD has appliedUS$47.2mn in five programmes and projects in Angola, whichhave generated investments worth US$101.6mn, benefitingmore than 201,600 family households.

THE XIXth WORLD Veterinary Poultry Congress, held in Cape Townin September, was a great success for both WVPA and their localSouth African branch, who organised the event. It attracted some1,300 delegates from about 70 countries who attendedpresentations on all aspects of poultry disease and its diagnosis,management and control.

Dr Stephen Lister from Crowshall Veterinary Services in the UKcautioned delegates that with consumers becoming increasinglyconcerned over the welfare of animals, veterinarians will have toplay a bigger role as the protectors of animals.

Various diseases were discussed at the Congress, includinginfectious bronchitis, which was covered in a talk by specialist DrJane Cook.

At a Congress symposium on avian influenza run by Ceva,representatives from Europe, the US and China told delegates thatquick action and good biosecurity measures are the key to controlof the disease.

Dr Rosa Costa, from the KYEEMA Foundation in Mozambique,spoke about the importance of interventions to improve productionin small-scale poultry farms.

The Congress was dedicated to the memory of the Association’slast president, Trevor Bagust, who died in office a year or so ago.

The opening ceremony also featured the induction of a further10 distinguished poultry veterinarians and poultry health scientiststo its Hall of Honour, which can be viewed at www.wvpa.net, andthe presentation of three awards.

During the meeting a new president and two new vice presidentswere elected into office. The new president is British poultryveterinarian, Nigel Horrox, and his vice presidents will be NicolasEterradossi from France and Prof Aini Ideris from Malaysia.

Nigel told us, “WVPA is going from strength to strength with newbranches from India, Iraq, Kenya and Nigeria coming on board atthis Congress and three great meetings to look forward to in thenear future. The outlook looks good for our Association.”Forthcoming events include the Asian WVPA Meeting in Manila,Philippines, in October 2016, WVPAC2017 in Edinburgh,Scotland, and WVPA2019 in Bangkok, Thailand.

THE DRC HAS recently launched its first agriculturalbusiness park spread across 75,000 hectares.DRC’s President Joseph Kabila has pledged toreform Congo’s agriculture sector. The country hasas much as 80mn hectares of arable land andsome 70 per cent of its population are involved infarming. However, commercial farming is yet totake off. DRC spent US$1.5bn on food imports in2014 alone. How will this agribusiness park andother initiatives transform DRC’s agriculture sector?

There is a special session on the DRC at theFourth Commercial Farm Africa being held on 7 - 9

October 2015 in Lusaka: “Transforming DRC’sLand into Profitable Commercial Farm”. Thisincludes: Land concession issues and lease tenure;Government’s plans and development status ofagribusiness parks; infrastructure development tosupport agri sector growth; labour cost and accessto input materials; domestic markets prospect andexport potential, and a successful case study.

The summit is also looking into the modernfarming practices and soil conservation techniquesthat can make commercial farming in Africaefficient and profitable. AGCO Corporation, a

worldwide manufacturer and distributor ofagricultural equipment, inaugurated its Future Farmand Learning Center near Lusaka recently. Thecentre is aimed at empowering local communitiesto develop a sustainable food production systemand increase farm productivity by implementingmodern farming techniques. AGCO is adistinguished speaker at the conference as well asa networking reception sponsor. Soil Capital – aspecialist in soil conservation techniques focused atAfrican commercial farming – is also sharing itsexpertise at the event.

THE NIGERIAN AGRIBUSINESS Group(NABG) has plans to invest US$1.8bn for thedevelopment of agribusiness across Nigeria.

Sunny Echono, permanent secretary in theFederal Ministry of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment, made the announcement atNABG’s first annual general meeting in Lagos.NABG is a private sector agribusiness groupled by Sani Dangote, and it is comprised ofstakeholders across the agriculture valuechain, from farmer associations to foodprocessors and transporters, as well as banksand finance companies.

Echono called the private sector an engineof growth for the economy, stating, “We haveended the dominance of government and I amoptimistic that the private sector will leadNigeria in restoring its past glory inagriculture.” He also expressed confidence inNABG attracting local and foreign investmentsinto Nigeria’s agriculture sector. According toa survey commissioned by the ministry in 2013to determine the challenges being faced bythe agriculture sector, it was found thatinfrastructure posed the biggest challenge,followed by financing and supply security.

Echono said that the government isworking toward removing these constraints,and asked for NABG’s help in these areas“by articulating the position of private sectoragribusinesses on matters relating to policies,legal and regulatory environments”.

AFRICA’S MAJOR BUSINESS conglomerateDangote Industries Limited (DIL) has signed anMOU with Nigeria's Federal Ministry ofAgriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) toestablish fully integrated rice production andprocessing operations across fives states inNigeria - Edo, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger.Dangote Industries Ltd will invest US$1bn(N165bn) in the project. A total of 150,000hectares of farmland in the five states has beenacquired by Dangote which will be used forcommercial production of rice paddy. Apart fromthis, Dangote plans two state-of-the-art large-scalerice mills with a capacity to process 240,000metric tons (mt) of rice paddy. The capacity isplanned to be doubled within two years.The rice plant is expected to produce 960,000mt of milled rice, which will be about 46 per centof rice imported into Nigeria.It will be the largest single investment ever madein rice production in Africa, with the installedcapacity.Nigeria expects that this project will help themproduce international quality grade rice and

enhance its prospects of becoming a major riceexporter. Nigeria, currently imports rice to meetdemand.The country's rice self-sufficiency policy aims atsaving US$1.79bn (N356bn) annually. Thecountry has already witnessed an increase in thenumber of rice mills from just one in 2011 to 18 by2014. All these mills process local paddy intohigh quality finished rice. The Nigerian rice isalready available in the local market in brandssuch as Quarra Rice, Umza rice, Ebony superrice, Eko rice, Mikap rice, Ashi rice, Queen of theNiger and Mama's Pride.

CATTLE BREEDERS ACROSS Rwanda arebeing urged to use a new protocol ofbovine oestrus synchronisation to improvecattle fertility.

The new protocol for animalreproduction that the Rwanda AgricultureBoard (RAB) is propagating is calledProgesterone Releasing Intra-vaginalDevice (PRID Delta). It is a device made ofa polyethylene spin containing 1.55 g ofnatural progesterone and its design ensuresgood contact with vaginal mucosa. It is aprocess that targets female bovines to comeinto heat within a short timeframe.

“This new protocol is effective andtechnically simple as opposed to the existingone. We have already started to use it insome areas but we want all inseminatorsacross the country to use PRID Delta tosynchronise cows for artificial insemination,”said Dr Christine Kanyandekwe, head ofanimal resources at RAB.

THE KENYA TEA Development Agency (KTDA) is investing US$48mnto construct four hydropower plants to meet electricity demand insome of its 65 affiliated factories. The anticipated 10.9 MW willpower some factories with the rest sold to the national grid.

“Energy costs account for about 30 per cent of the operation costsin tea factories. Electricity alone accounts for 17 per cent. Thehydropower plants will cut operation costs as well as earn incomethrough sale of excess power,” said Lerionka Tiampati, KTDA’s CEO.

On average, according to KTDA, each tea factory spends betweenUS$30,000 and US$65,000 on electricity annually. According toTiampati, factories in tea growing regions should invest in alternativeenergy. The majority of these factories are found in hilly and rainyareas where the speed of water is fast.

The four hydropower projects are located in the mountainousCentral Kenya region. KTDA has already set up two hydropowerplants namely Imenti in Meru County and Gura in Nyeri County.

Experts say that, with no damming of water required in the small hydroprojects, the overall costs and environmental implications are reduced.

“The hydropower generation aims at reducing the cost of energy,improve power reliability and, whenever possible, sell the excesspower to the national grid. With rampant power outages, sometimesreaching 14 per cent, tea factories have been forced to invest indiesel-run standby generators, pushing the cost of power,” saidJaphet Bulali, a mechanical engineer in charge of KTDA Power, asubsidiary of KTDA that is involved in the development of these Run-Off-River (ROR) systems.

The Kenya government has been encouraging firms to introduceclean energy production and cut reliance on diesel dependency inpower generation to ensure environment sustainability.

“Kenya has a huge potential and sufficient renewable energy that willensure higher energy security, lower costs of energy and increasedenergy reliability,” noted Peter Kanyago, KTDA’s board chairman.

“THERE IS A need to create and strengthen regional markets withinAfrica in order to make the most of cross-country and intermarket trade,”according to Zambeef joint CEO Francis Grogan. Grogan made theobservation during a group tour by South African farmers to Zambeef’sHuntley processing operations and Kalundu Dairy Farm in Chisamba.Lloyd Phillips of Farmer’s Weekly magazine, who headed the SouthAfrican group, observed that there were vast opportunitiesinternationally for the sector, and that countries needed to find nicheproducts that they could then market to specific markets within andbeyond the region.“There is a growing income and a growing consumer base in Africa,and SADC must meet its own demand and have strong food securitythen look for niche markets that will present fair value for its surplusproduce,” said Phillips.“The fundamental strength of a country is in its agriculture sector. Thereis a need for enabling environments, skills training, effective research anddevelopment with meaningful transfer of knowledge to farmers,” he said. Access to regional markets would in turn lead to increased employment,foreign direct investment and tax earnings for the country with theincrease in demand for particular agricultural products, he added.“It was only possible to expand outside the national boundaries ifZambia continued to be self-sufficient in basic food crops,” observedGrogan, reiterating the sentiments of his fellow joint CEO Carl Irwin.Grogan also commented on the need for sustainable agriculturalpractices in the sector in light of the various economic, social andclimatic factors that needed to be taken into consideration as farmersseek to enter market any given market.

KENYA HAS SET up three nitrogen plants to store semen forartificial insemination (AI) as the dairy subsector expands.

The three plants in Eldoret, Nyandarua and Meru areexpected to support the private sector, which has largely beeninvolved in the provision of AI services.

Two more centres, one in Sotik and the other in Kirinyaga willbe set up in the current financial year, according to Kenya’sLivestock Principal Secretary (PS), Prof Fred Segor.

The government also plans to have AI personnel in everyward to boost availability if the service.

Kenya has about 800,000 dairy farmers who keep fourmillion dairy cows, according to the Ministry of Livestock.

Economic Survey 2015 indicated that the volume of milkproduced nationally grew from 523mn litres in 2013 to 541mnlitres in 2014.

The government is also developing fresh guidelines toregulate the quality of livestock feed.

A new policy, to be released in the next few months, willprovide standards to be followed in livestock feed formulation.

“Some manufacturers have been duping farmers byproviding sub-standard feeds affecting overall milk production.The new policy will streamline the industry and enforcestandards stipulated by the Kenya Bureau of Standards(KEBS),” observed Prof Segor.

A NEW PARTNERSHIP has been launched to benefit African ricefarmers and stakeholders directly involved in designing andimplementing sustainable projects that boost the crop’s developmenton the continent.

The comprehensive Programme for Rice Development in Africawas launched at the Partnership Meeting on the Regional Initiativefor Rice Development in Africa in Kenya late last year.

The meeting was co-organised by the FAO, AfricaRice and keyplayers in the rice value chain in Africa.

“A major challenge facing the rice sector in Africa in general isthe inability of local production to meet the continent’s demands forrice, and the continent continues to rely on importation to meet itsincreasing demand for the crop,” said Bukar Tijani, FAO Africaregional representative. “We expect this initiative to contribute toreducing high food import bills and impact on small producers.”

Tijani added that the programme will support synergies and thecomparative advantages, lessons and experiences of key nationaland international institutions, and initiatives to promote foodsecurity and rice self-sufficiency in Africa.

Felix Koskei, Kenya’s cabinet secretary for the Ministry ofAgriculture, Fisheries and Livestock, urged African countries totap into the initiative as it will help increase food security andimprove livelihoods. “We have common challenges. Thus we needto come together [and] create synergies to eradicate hunger inAfrica,” Koskei said.

Somalia’s minister for agriculture, Abdi Ahmed Mohamed,added: “Rice is a strategic and priority crop for food security in theregion. This is an opportunity for Somalia to be back in contributingto Africa’s food security.” AfricaRice

C H I N A C A M CENGINEERING hasannounced plans to reviveoperations at ArdaMushumbi Pools Estate witha US$200mn investmentThe estate in MashonalandCentral region will get themoney over the next fiveyears, and the funding willbe used to developirrigation. The Chinesecompany had sealed a deal with Zimbabwe’s Agricultural RuralDevelopment Authority (Arda) to resuscitate the estate, but the dealis subject to approval by the country’s government through theMinistry of Finance and Economic Development.Wang Kailong, country representative for Zimbabwe at ChinaCAMC Engineering, said that his company was committed tohelping the revival of agriculture in Zimbabwe, and that it hadwanted to build a dam at Arda Mushumbi Pools that would irrigateabout 1,000 ha.He added that China CAMC Engineering would also set up a cottonginnery and a fruit canning plant at Mushumbi. “We have alreadysigned a contract with Arda for us to build a dam, a cotton ginneryand a fruit canning plant at Mushumbi Pools,” he added. “The damthat we intend to build will also have the capacity to generate about15MW of electricity that will provide power to the ginnery andcanning plant that we want to set up at Mushumbi Pools.”

New partnership for rice development in Africa formed CAMC to invest US$200mn in Zimbabweirrigation

THE COMESA SECRETARIAT in collaborationwith the African Union – Interafrican Bureaufor Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) recently helda two day regional workshop in Lusaka tovalidate the COMESA Livestock PolicyFramework.

Experts in livestock agriculture includingdirectors of veterinary services and directorsof animal production from COMESA memberstates participated in the workshop.

While the continent is experiencinginteresting changes in many sectors of the

economy, livestock has continued to recordlow performances, largely because it is poorlyfunded both from the public and privatesector, despite the fact that about 300mnAfricans depend on the sector for foodsecurity, livelihood, employment and income.

ZAMBIA SUGAR PRODUCED arecord 424,000 tons of sugarduring the 2014/15 season,comfortably exceeding theprevious record of 404,000 tonsachieved during the 2013/14season.

According to the ‘Commentaryfor the Year’ ended 31 March2015, this record performancewas largely due to improvedfactory reliability and better thanexpected overall time efficiencies.Favourable weather andharvesting conditionsexperienced in November andDecember 2014 contributed tobetter quality and sucrose levels.

“Average cane yieldsincreased appreciably across theentire cane growing area from114 tons per hectare in theprevious year to 123 tons perhectare. A record 3.4mn tons ofcane was delivered to the mill,representing an increase of eightper cent compared to 3.1mn tonsin the previous year.

“The estate delivered 1.96mntons compared to 1.86mn tons inthe previous year whilst out-

grower deliveries increased to1.45mn tons from 1.29mn tons inthe 2013/14 season. KaleyaSmallholders Company Limited(Kascol), the largest small-scalescheme, supplied their highesttonnage on record with 284,000tons, exceeding their previousrecord of 258,000 tons.Smallholder growers contributed10 per cent of the total canesupply,” read the commentary inpart.

Record sales were achieved inthe domestic market, increasingby six per cent. The company

continued to build on its wellestablished sugar marketing anddistribution network across thecountry.

Surplus sugar stocks in theworld market and the consequentimpact on global sugar pricescontinue to depress prices in theregional markets. Sales to EUmarkets decreased by 30 percent, whilst exports into regionalmarkets increased by 60 per cent.The negative pricing impact onexport earnings has largely beenmitigated by favourableexchange rate movements.

Sugar production in the2015/16 season is estimated tobe marginally less than the pastseason due to dry conditionsexperienced in November andDecember 2014, powerinterruptions, the outbreak of theyellow sugarcane aphids and alsounseasonal rains during April2015. The company continues toimplement strategies to mitigatethese challenges.

“Reasonable growth isexpected in the domestic market.Margins in both the regional andEU export markets are expectedto remain under pressure fromsurplus sugar stocks on the worldmarket. Realisations in thesemarkets will continue to beinfluenced by exchange ratemovements,” the Commentaryadded.

Unseasonal rains slightlydelayed the factory start-up to thesecond week of April andoperations have stabilisednotwithstanding power outages.Early season cane yields are atacceptable levels and willimprove as the crop matures.

ALL SOUTHERN AFRICAN Development Community (SADC) memberstates, with the exception of Zambia, Tanzania and South Africa, will thisagricultural season experience a food deficit arising from poor rainfallpattern caused by climate change, it has been learnt.According to the regional economic community‘s director, food,agriculture and natural resources, Margaret Nyirenda, the weather hasnot been favourable in the region, resulting in very poor rainfall and insome cases floods and prolonged dry spells. This has affected cropproduction, especially maize which is the staple food.Even these three countries will fall below one million metric tonnes ofmaize at the end of the season as compared to past seasons, sheadded.

‘’Agriculture, food security and prudent management of naturalresources continue to be at the epicenter of the SADC region. To thisend, the SADC region is cognisant of the increased number ofvulnerable people who require both food and other humanitarianassistance,’’ she explained.‘’The humanitarian outlook looks challenging. It is important to note thatthis year, availability of maize, which usually makes up more than 75per cent of the total cereal production, is forecast at 31.73mn metrictonnes (mt) compared to 36.79mn mt last year,’’ she said.Zambia has had good harvests in the last couple of years – 3,350,671mt and 2,618,221 mt of maize in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 farmingseason, facilitating exports to some of its neighbours in deficit.

REPRESENTATIVES OF 11 West African fertiliser enterprises paid athree-day business visit to the Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP)in Morocco. Participants explored opportunities to establishpartnerships and networks to increase supply and distribution offertilisers in West Africa.Organised by the USAID West Africa Fertilizer Program (WAFP) with

support from OCP, the tour forms part of the project’s efforts to improvelevels of fertiliser consumption in sub-Saharan Africa. Bringing togetherOCP, a giant producer of primary raw materials for fertiliser production,and blending and distribution companies facilitates appropriatelinkages and business deals between actors at the various levels of thevalue chain to improve regional fertiliser supply.

With a new fertiliser production capacity of one million tons per year,targeted at African markets, OCP has indicated its interest in developingand creating new partnerships with West African fertiliser importers anddistributors. The tour served to introduce OCP to companies that areinterested in forming part of a distribution network for OCP’s productsin West Africa. Participants toured OCP’s phosphorus production facility in Jorf

Lasfar to get acquainted with the processes for mining and processingraw material into diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser products.There were also opportunities for company representatives to haveexclusive meetings with OCP officials to discuss possible linkagesbetween their respective companies.

THE NEW GRAIN handling facility at Kurasini hasbeen operational for some months now and consistsof five silos, totalling 60,000 tonnes capacity. Withonly three days to offload the grain from the bulkwheat cargo vessel, the peak flow rate of 1,200tonnes per hour must be consistently reached.

This speed of offloading is achieved using fourside by side Griffith Elder weighbridges, each withseparate intake lanes. Bakhresa’s site has a fleet of40 brand new wheat trucks designed for this exactpurpose. Each truck has a capacity of around 25tonnes and can complete the entire weighing andoffloading process in only five minutes. The loadingand unloading of each vehicle is done on theweighbridge to save time.

As the trucks arrive at the weighbridge, the driverspresent a preprogrammed RFID tag to identifythemselves. Each tag contains the details of theshipment, including contract number, type of goodsand many other bespoke details. These details arestored as a ticket within the Ton Tel software alongwith the fully loaded weight of the vehicle. Thevehicle can then offload the grain onto the elevatorsand conveyors that will distribute out to the relativesilos. Once empty, the vehicle is weighed again. Thisrecords the empty weight of the vehicle andcalculates a net weight value to add to each ticket.

The driver terminal produces a small printout for

the driver showing the weight information, as he ispaid based on the amount of grain offloaded. Thewhole system is fully automatic using Griffith Elder’sTon-Tel Software and the operator is only needed toclarify information with the drivers, if necessary.

The Ton Tel Software contains an extremelyversatile reporting function, allowing managers togenerate reports based on vehicle, store, date orany other information found on the tickets. As well assummary reports, the software can be programmedto send reports automatically via email at scheduledtimes. This allows the manager to know exactly whatis happening on site at any time. To avoid operatorerror, authorisation levels with password protectioncan be set within the software to allow different levels

of access for operators, managers andadministrators.

Once the grain has been offloaded, the grainhandling is carried out by Buhler conveyors andelevators and directed from the control room to theselected silo. During this process the grain is sieved toremove the fine dust and large foreign bodies fromthe grain. As the port repeatedly takes shipments fromall over the world it is important to separate thevarious wheat types in each silo.

The information between the conveyor controlsystem can be correlated with the Griffith Elder TonTel software and the client’s own stock managementsystem to ensure that stock levels and stockinformation is correct.

The wheat doesn’t stay here long and as soon asit is stored, dispatchers begin planning which mill thewheat will be allocated to.

The whole system is then repeated, this timeloading the vehicles with wheat via the loading bayabove each of the weighbridges. The flow iscontrolled by an operator who can see the live netweight on the large display inside the office.

Once the truck is filled, the wheat can then beimmediately dispatched from the Bakhresa grainhandling site onto its various final locations where itcan be made into a wide variety of products that aredistributed across Africa.

the main problem in modern productivelivestock farming is a timely supply of nutrients,including mineral components, to an animal,which are consumed in the process of bodygrowth and development, namely skeleton,muscles and ligaments, internal organs,glandular tissue and immunity as a whole.Cattle are prone to metaboliс disturbances andhealth disorders in case of prolonged andconsiderable mineral insufficiency or excess offluorine, selenium or molybdenum.

all required mineral substances can beincluded in the cattle diet or supplied with

water. Moreover, the animals of all age groupsshould have free access to a box having twopartitions with extra mineral nutritioncontaining salt (in regions with iodidedeficiency – with iodized salt), on the one hand,and an appropriate mixture of mineralsubstances, on the other hand. Extra nutritionensures the supply of mineral substances to theanimals according to their needs.

Dairy cattle, like other animals, needvitamins. the vitamin needs of dairy and meatcattle are similar, except for highly productivelactating cows.

the lack of one or several vitamins in the dietcan lead to growth inhibition, reproductiondeterioration or specific diseases known asavitaminoses. in grave cases the animal maydie. though extreme vitamin deficiency is quite

rare, it should be noted that avitaminoses ofmedium degree cause a much greatereconomic damage to livestock farming. in rarecases the diet is so deficient in vitamins thatspecific avitaminosis symptoms show up. Whenone animal dies one could suppose that thisanimal is unique and other animals havevitamin deficiency of a lesser degree which,despite the lack of typical signs, worsens theirhealth condition and productivity.

Cattle have a physiological need for mostvitamins necessary for other mammals. theirneed for vitamins is satisfied mainly due tovitamin synthesis by microorganisms of therumen, vitamins in natural food and synthesisby the tissues. high quality coarse foragecontains a lot of vitamin a and vitamin Eprecursors. however, each farmer faces theproblem of the choice of a stable indicator todetermine the necessity of an increase ordecrease in the supply of vitamins which are,incidentally, quite expensive.

Each cattle-breeder should determine whatmineral and vitamin additives should be usedand how much forage should be given toanimals in definite conditions.

Ukrainian cattle-breeders are no exception:when achieving high results in milk and meatproduction, they faced the problem of the lackof vitamins and mineral substances in highlyproductive animals.

“torMiks” researchers helped to settle theproblem. they decided to create an additivewhich would meet the following requirements: • the additive should balance the diet of the

as a result of comprehensive research, a lineof mineral blocks under the “Bovimix®”trademark was developed and patented. theproduct is a 10 kg briquette. there are ninevarieties of the product plus one energyadditive in the form of a suspension. theyshould be chosen depending on age groups

and productivity. these products can efficientlysatisfy the animal’s need for vitamins andminerals. the proposed formulas are based onscientific research and take cattle needs intoaccount. they ensure optimal digestion of allvitamins and minerals, improve immunity,increase the yield of milk up to 1000 litres perlactation compared with other animals of thesame flock. Chickens play a hugely important part in Africa’s food security. Tim Guest reports on breeding toincrease meat and egg productivity.

INCREASING THE MEAT and eggproductivity of predominantlyindigenous chickens (village birds),through interbreeding with exotic or

broiler-type, higher-yield animals, seems tobe a work in progress across the region. Itis important here, though, not to dilute theindigenous gene pool and remove uniqueand valuable traits, the advantages ofwhich are sometimes overlooked.

While commercial poultry/chickenfarming has grown considerably in somemore advanced markets in Africa, eg, SouthAfrica, where farms housing up to 10,000birds are not uncommon, indigenous birds(IC) in small holding scenarios account foralmost 90 per cent of the poultry farmed inless developed countries.

Commercial versus indigenousWhen it comes to laying eggs, properlymanaged commercial animals cannowadays produce upwards of 300 eggsper year, whereas indigenous birds lay nomore than around 50-60 eggs per year.This difference in the genetic propensity tolay eggs is largely to do with brood cyclesand behavior, which sees brooding ICtaking some 17 weeks for the laying,nesting, hatching and rearing cycle untilchicks are around seven weeks. That wholeperiod passes without another egg beinglaid and, as a result, there is only time leftin the year for a further 2.5 clutches to belaid. So, why the difference in yield betweenIC and commercial birds? The answer isthat the natural broodiness of the birds hasbeen bred out of commercial broilers tomaximise egg production, but this makesthem unsuited for use in a village scenariowhere, without natural brood andreproductive behaviour, they fail to deliverany long-term value for the community. Thisis unfortunate from the perspective ofproductivity, as these birds undercommercial rearing conditions can reach atwo kg live weight in just five weeks, whilethe equivalent male village IC are likely tobe not much more than one kg and thatafter 20 weeks. While these are true geneticdifferences showing through, theenvironment in which each is reared also

plays a part in productivity: commercial –controlled conditions (though temperatureremains a problem in areas where power isunreliable), carefully formulated feed –higher weight; IC – roaming free, feedquality and quantity variable and typicallyvillage scraps and natural forage – lowerweight. That said, it is the natural genetictraits of the village birds that put them at anadvantage in such an environment.Brooding and reproduction follows itsnatural course without the need for villagefarmers to intervene with artificialmechanisms. Birds can evade predatorseffectively through their ability to run fastand fly, the latter allowing them to roost offthe ground in trees. Village IC have betterresistance to microbial diseases andparasitic infestations than commercialbirds; and as is typical even in developedcountries, the meat and eggs from free-range birds is typically preferred by allconsumers.

Heat’s not for everyoneThe majority of commercial stock now inAfrica have come from stock bred anddeveloped over the past 30 years, intemperate and developed markets – where

high temperatures have never been aproblem – for export to these developingregions. The discrepancy here is thattemperature is still a major stumbling blockfor commercial production in Africa, andthe genetic tolerance to high temperatureshas been largely neglected by the industry.As a result, this remains the major factorrestricting the productivity of commercialbroilers and layers in medium- to large-scale production facilities in sub-Saharandeveloping countries. And while unreliableelectricity supplies make consistent coolingof poultry compounds almost impossible insome places, a simple genetic approach toincrease the heat tolerance of commercialbirds is now increasingly being adopted.This single-gene approach focuses ongenes affecting traits such as feather coverwhere heat tolerance is improved, forexample, by introducing genes for nakedneck, which helps heat loss from the bird.

But no matter how effective this heattolerance gene transfer is, commercial birdsare still not suited to good performance insemi-scavenging village conditions, despitemany attempts at incorporating genesassociated with improved commercial eggand meat production into village birds.

Many cross-breeding projects have takenplace and are underway. Results havevaried, but it has been documented thatalmost all cross-breeding programmesresult in birds that produce more eggsand/or improved growth rate than IC, yetexhibit several drawbacks in the process,including a diminished broodiness, so theydon’t reproduce naturally anymore andrequire farmer intervention to do so. Also,additional feed is often needed tosupplement what was previously availablein the village in order for the birds to reachfull potential. So the question has to beasked, do these ‘changes’ justify suchmethods, considering it results in theultimate impact – erosion of the geneticresource itself?

Indigenous chicken improvement project Watching and researching all theseapproaches, and doing its best to ensureindigenous genetic resource remains strong,is a joint African Union/European Union-funded project – the Indigenous ChickenImprovement Project (InCIP). This is acollaborative research venture betweenEgerton University, Wageningen University,the University of Malawi and otherstakeholders, conducted at the Department ofAnimal Sciences, Egerton University Njoro.

Its research agenda began in 2012 andis set to run until 2017, aiming to involvesmallhold farmers and poorer villagecommunities in Kenya and Malawi in a ‘co-ordinated IC sub-sector throughimprovement of productivity of IC’.

By its conclusion in 2017, the projecthopes to have identified ‘high-producingecotypes and composites’ and determinedwhat quality of meat and eggs can beassociated with each. A database is beingcreated addressing specific issues andcircumstances in different countries andregions, so stakeholders will understand

what variety or breed stock will best suittheir needs. Work with different ecotypes –breeds suited to different environments – isalso looking at the resistance of IC to majordiseases, such as Newcastle Disease.

Amongst its many activities of note, InCIPis currently evaluating the growthperformance of a Kenyan IC ecotype - the‘Kuchi’ Ecotype – which is mainly found inLamu County and neighbouring coastalregions where it has been kept insmallholdings for a long time. It is thoughtto have been introduced by merchants from

Asia, particularly Japan, who inhabited theregion many years ago. This ecotype iscommon in Tanzania where studies haveshown its superiority in growth traitscompared to other ecotypes, making it agood starting material for geneticimprovement in body weight. Unlike otherIC ecotypes, very few studies have beendone on Kuchi IC in Kenya.

So far, InCIP has conducted molecularstudies characterising the various other ICecotypes in Kenya into clusters. In the caseof Kuchi research, it was found to belong toits very own cluster, indicating its geneticdistinctiveness from the rest of the chickenpopulation in Kenya. InCIP says that thesefindings underpin a need to study the Kuchifurther, with the understanding of its originsand the Tanzania link crucial. Indeed, manyfarmers are already beginning to use Kuchifor meat production in Kenya despite, asInCIP states, being ‘ignorant of its geneticattributes’. Indeed, it was recentlyintroduced in Elgeyo Marakwet Countyfrom Lamu, and InCIP says that preliminaryperformance indicates its ‘superiority inmeat production’.

Going forward, InCIP is focused onunderstanding Kuchi growth patterns andgrowth genetics so that a breedingprogramme for its genetic improvement forincreased productivity can be designed. h

A UGANDAN POULTRY company, Yo Kuku has partnered with RCL Foods,one of the major South African food producers, in a joint venture expected toboost the production of birds, especially in the East African Community region,by ensuring affordability of their products.According to company officials, the joint venture also means that they havecreated one of the largest processors of chicken in both East and CentralAfrica as well as the regional leader in the supply of fresh and frozen chicken,offering a broad portfolio of chicken products in the market."Hudani Manji Holdings Limited (HMHL) announces the completion of its jointventure with RCL Foods (RCL) to form HMH-Rainbow, the new parentcompany of both the Yo Kuku and Enkoko brands," the company stated.It has been reported that since the joint venture was agreed upon, bothcompanies have been preparing an integration plan with a major focus onhow to rapidly expand the business to meet the wider market of the EastAfrican community and other neighbouring countries. The plans for growthinclude integrating the poultry operation with the set up of a modern hatcheryand breeding farm in addition to expanding the capacity of the broiler farmsto attain 540,000 birds per cycle within the next 18 months.Yo Kuku, a new entrant in the poultry business in Uganda, was commissionedearly this year and says the decision to invest in the poultry industry wasoccasioned by the high demand of chicken in Uganda, the lack of a dominantintegrated player in the sector and lack of reliable supply chains.The US$16mn poultry investment sits on 64 acres and is located about 50 kmoutside of Kampala. Hudani Manji Holdings Ltd is the parent company of theYo Kuku brand.The company says its broiler farm has a capacity of 480,000 birds per eight-week cycle and consists of eight broiler houses. He concluded that without trade barriersthe EU certainly cannot compete on costs.

handling systems, feather pickers and immersion chillers in the1950’s, as intensive production of broiler birds accelerated.Evisceration and cut-up machinery came on stream during the1960’s and 1970’s, with automatic de-boning, portioning andsorting equipment, weighing/pricing label machines, sorters andcooking and freezing systems during the last two decades of thetwentieth century.

Poultry processing plants have continued to adopt a wide rangeof technologies, increasingly enabled by robotic and intelligentsystems, to improve productivity including cost effectiveness of thelabour force, efficiency, throughput of processed poultry productsand repeatability and consistency of performance and productquality. This succession of innovation has simultaneously allowedmanagers to extend finite resources and adopt an expanding rangeof value-added activity. The downside is the unavoidable creationof pockets of high tech automated equipment within an otherwisetraditional processing plant. Within the larger factory scene theseislands of high technology require further automation throughrobotics and intelligent systems to link up and integrate.

A wide range of difficulties and challengesEquipment manufacturers and scientific researchers arecontinually forced to focus on a wide range of difficulties andchallenges. These include expanding challenges around foodsafety, difficulties in staffing plant processing operations,expanding portion and product quality demands, limited resourcesand the ever-greater requirement for flexibility of operation.Meanwhile, a new generation of technologies promising morefully integrated plant operations continues to emerge to consignthese limitations to history.

Elimination of automation islandsThe introduction in the 1980’s of automatic transfer machines linkingslaughter and evisceration lines was one of the very first bridges builtbetween such islands of automation. Design, development andinstallation of automatic transfer machines provided important laboursavings and showed, for the first time, the importance and value oflinking up two or more automated events or systems.

Processing plants received another crucial link up with the designand development of flexible cut-up lines. This development joinedup a series of automatic cutting devices which could be used or by-passed, as appropriate, depending on the overall task in hand.Flexible cut up lines allowed plants to maximise value of theparticular product processed while, at the same time, minimisingdemands on labour.

Integrated automation subsequently gained an intrinsicmomentum following the emergence of brand new designs anddevelopments aimed at bridging gaps between pockets ofautomation isolation that still exist in some poultry processingplants. One such event was the installation of air chillers in placeof traditional immersion chillers. Targeting product quality andaspects of food safety in specific sectors of processed poultryproducts was the main focus of this particular development.

Air chiller systems additionally furnished an automatic transferbridge between two of the most stubborn islands of automation inthe plant, ie, the evisceration line and the pack-out/cut-up line.Georgia Tech was central to the solution, focussing hard onimmersion chiller technology through an intelligent transfer device.The device used computer vision technology comprising a series oforientation devices and a shackle transfer module to automaticallytransfer the carcass.

Post 2000 a separate team of researchers at Georgia Tech,working in co-operation with the University of Georgia and theUSDA Agricultural Research Service, intensified their investigationinto the development of automated live-bird transfer processes atthe front end of poultry processing plants. The team used computerimaging and intelligent grasping devices and automatic shacklingtechnology to slash labour requirements, while increasing andimproving control over the quality of the poultry products comingoff line.

Knowledge systems yield quality and safetyAn early example of in-line intelligence was overhead in-line scalesystems and first incorporated into poultry processing plants overthree decades ago. Completely revolutionary, at that time, thesesystems enabled automatic sorting of poultry products ‘on-the-fly’by weight grade. Contemporary counterpart was the belt weigh-sorter already widely used throughout the entire poultry processingindustry. These devices weighed belt-conveyed products ‘on-the-fly’and subsequently removed them from the line based on weightgrade. By providing optimum control over the process they havegreatly assisted in meeting increasingly strict poultry meat portiondemands, while simultaneously furnishing substantial cost savings.

All this proved to be just the ‘tip of the iceberg’ for integratedautomation. Other examples providing intelligence informationand action on in-process product quality and safety include X-rayscanners and metal detectors. Metal detectors quickly became wellestablished and widely accepted in all processing plants. X-raysystems strived harder to achieve this level of acceptance due tolimited accuracy in screening to detect pieces and fragments ofbone and cartilage in ‘de-boned’ poultry products.

Computer vision technology has proved to be some of the mostempowering technology providing in-process product quality andsafety. First introduced into processing plants with automaticportioning technology it eventually entered product quality andsafety screening/control on a much broader front. After years ofresearch alongside improvements in camera, lighting andcomputer technology these colour imaging systems became partand parcel of the poultry processing industry. By 2010 a goodnumber of colour-based vision systems were in place for thescreening of whole bird carcasses for visual defects.

Researchers at Georgia Tech went one stage further to developa range of computer vision systems that could successfully screende-boned meat for fan bones; in-process poultry product for plasticforeign objects; in-process cooked product for colour, shape andquality appearance; and cooked poultry product for temperaturequality by using infra-red cameras. This team worked alongsidescientists and technologists from Cryovac to develop an automatedscreening system that could inspect seal integrity on over-wrap traysto ensure and assure food safety and security.

These leading-edge systems of their time were not new technologyfor new technology’s sake, but offered significant cost savings byautomating many of the erstwhile manual screening methods carriedout in poultry processing plants. Be that as it may, real intrinsic valueto the industry and consumers has continued to be through furnishinghighly accurate and consistent screening information on 100 percent of the product. In addition they are able to electronicallycommunicate all this information found by the scanner to a computerdatabase and/or instrumentation, thus offering direction anddecision on optimising the poultry process operation.

De-boning has been a ‘harder nut to crack’In spite of its overall achievements, existing automation technologyhad always limited success in even beginning to deal with productvariability and complicated jobs demanding visual or tactilefeedback to effectively carry out a task.

A promising start was made with automatic portioning machines

at the end of the 1980’s, when, for the first time ever, a cutting taskbecame automated. This was achieved by ‘requesting’ a computervision system to furnish exact volume and shape information oneach product. Information was relayed to the computer and usedto make a decision on how to optimally cut that particular carcassand to execute the task using a robotically-controlled water-jetknife. Such portioning machines have been consistently improvedsince then with add on features and more modern designs withmetal blades. Advantages are clear enough. Automation saveslabour and offers an accuracy and consistency of cutting thatcannot be matched by manual methods.

De-boning has proved to be a relatively ‘tough nut to crack’while, at the same time, becoming the focal point of some of themost intense investigation within the industry. Automatic de-bonersfirst appeared on the poultry processing scene some thirty yearsago and were rapidly taken on board by plants to slash mountinglabour costs unavoidably related to burgeoning consumer demandfor de-boned poultry products. But plant management soonrealised that machinery was failing to produce yields achieved withmanual de-boning. When they tried to boost yield they were facedwith completely unacceptable increases in bone fragments in thepoultry product. The majority, by now thoroughly fed up with failedtechnology, gave up and reverted to manual de-boning in themiddle of the 1990’s.

Not dissuaded or deterred, equipment designers carried onimproving this technology although by now a more cautiousindustry was reluctant to re-venture into this field in a hurry. Butimprovements came thick and fast especially for the de-boning ofchicken thighs and legs with many plants installing new systems.Automatic breast de-boning equipment did not have such an initialeasy ride or high level of success.

However, ‘where there is a will there is a way’ and by 2010 thelatest breast de-boning system from Stork had adopted acompletely different approach to control of the cuts, and was metwith general initial approval from the industry.

Georgia Tech was very much involved with this area ofautomation. It went on to develop prototype systems that utilisedon-board robotic actuators to adjust cutting motion by using inputand feedback information. They anticipated that success in thisarea would assist the industry in achieving substantial laboursavings and enhanced product yield, while minimising the obviousrisk and safety hazards of bone fragments appearing in ‘de-boned’poultry products. In 2015 and another five years on it is full steamahead for the automatic de-boning of the poultry carcass but thatis another story. h

CHANGES IN THE gaitpatterns of growingpigs is not affected bythe floor surface they

are reared on.Researchers at Newcastle

University have used a 3Dmotion capture technique tosubjectively measure themovement of pigs.

Circular, reflective markerswere stuck onto different pointsof the body and detected byinfrared cameras when the pigswere filmed while walking.

Movements on the walkwaywere captured with motioncapture software and analysed.This technology provides anaccurate alternative to traditionalgait assessment methods thatrely on the human eye.

Analysis of gait (movement)patterns in pigs can help to spotleg weakness and lameness.Lameness is a significantchallenge in the pig industry,

costing approximately US$8.3mnper year due to veterinary fees,treatment and cost of replacinglame breeding pigs.

Common causes of lamenessAlso, the welfare of lame pigs isa concern of pig producers.Common causes of lamenessinclude genetic muscle orskeleton weaknesses, infections,injuries and poor nutrition.

Previous research hassuggested that the type of floorthat pigs are housed on canaffect the chances of thembecoming lame, with slattedfloors causing more leg weaknessthan straw-bedded floors.

In this study, 12 male and 12female healthy growing pigswere randomly selected for gaitanalysis by 3D motion capture.

Different floor types are usedin modern, intensive pigproduction systems at differentstages of the pigs’ productioncycle. The general perceptionholds that slatted and/or hardsolid concrete surfaces areinferior to soft straw-coveredfloors regarding healthymusculoskeletal development.

Previous studies have comparedpigs housed on different floortypes using clinical, subjectiveassessment of leg weakness andlameness. However, reliablestudies generally report a lowrepeatability of clinical lamenessscoring.

The walking movements ofeach pig were captured fivetimes over a six week period.The pigs were split into threegroups for housing on threedifferent floor types: fully slatted,partially slatted/partially concreteand straw-bedded. During thistime all of the pigs grew in

weight from 37 kg to 90 kg.Results showed that the gait of

the pigs changed over time, asexpected, but many of thechanges were very subtle andtherefore undetectable to thehuman eye.

This shows that the 3D motioncapture technique may be usefulfor detection of subtle legweaknesses and lameness inpigs. Changes in gait pattern ofthe pigs over the six-week periodwas not affected by the floorsurface. None of the floor typescaused any damaging effects ongait development. h

The economic impact of lameness is caused by lower productivity, highercosts of treatment and even early culling of affected animals.

In early August, Phoenix Africa announced an investment of US$550,000 into its Sierra Leone ricefarming company, Lion Mountains Agrico Ltd. This Series A funding by a private investor is the first stagein a planned total fundraise of US$26mn over the next two years for the start-up agriculture operation.

DESPITE THE EBOLA crisis that hashit Sierra Leone hard over the lastyear, and with just US$250,000,Phoenix Africa launched a rice-

producing business, Lion Mountains, in theBo District to the south of Sierra Leone. Thepilot phase operation began in October2014, at what proved to be the height ofthe epidemic.

A small land area was developed and arice mill established in Bo, the second cityof the country, rapidly becoming the largestmilling operation in Bo District.

Rice is the main staple of the SierraLeonean diet but most of it is imported – atan estimated cost to the economy of at leastUS$350mn a year.

Phoenix Africa has championed theexcellent investment potential of SierraLeone, and aims to make Lion Mountainsthe biggest producer and processor of foodin the country. As the economy reboundsfrom the Ebola epidemic, a return to highgrowth is anticipated.

Following the signature of theshareholders’ agreement, Paddy Docherty,chief executive of Phoenix Africa andchairman of Lion Mountains, commented,“We are delighted that we have successfullycome through the Ebola crisis and securedthis finance – there is still a long way to gofor both Lion Mountains and Sierra Leone,but, with this backing, we are properlyunder way. This is an exciting opportunityfor us – we believe in the African agriculturestory and are highly confident that LionMountains will continue having anincreasingly positive impact in Sierra Leone,and especially for the local communitieswhere we operate.”

Large-scale commercial agricultureLion Mountains Agrico Ltd has beenfounded to develop the extraordinaryagricultural prospects of Sierra Leone: with

readily available land of the highest qualityand plentiful rainfall, the country offers avery attractive natural endowment withexcellent commercial potential.

The goal of Lion Mountains is to developlarge-scale commercial agriculture, with afocus on mechanised production andprocessing of rice and other crops in SierraLeone, generating superior returns for itsshareholders whilst also delivering aprofound social impact to its partnercommunities. It is headquartered in Bo andhas agreements in place with threechiefdoms in Bo District: Lugbu, Tikonkoand Bumpe Ngao, providing access to14,000 ha of prime farmland.

Excellent community relationsLion Mountains has developed excellentcommunity relations and enjoys high levelsof support among all stakeholders, fromPresident Koroma downwards.

Phoenix established a rice mill in itswarehouse in Bo, and processing and salesof rice began in December 2014. Millingcapacity will gradually be expanded as the

land area is developed, and it is already thepremier milling operation in Bo District.

With Sierra Leone heavily reliant onimports of rice, the market is highlyattractive, and Lion Mountains will selldomestically for the immediate future.

Within two to three months it hasbecome the biggest rice milling operationin the Bo district. Locals now have access tothe market.

Now, Phoenix Africa is trying to raise afresh US$1.1mn tranche of money toexpand and buy more infrastructure.

“There are very few countries where youcan, from a standing start, go on tobecome the dominant player in yourindustry in two or three years,” saidDocherty. “Selling Sierra Leoneans rice fromSierra Leone is making us very popular. Thisis a real import-substitution opportunity.”

The Lion Mountains OutgrowerProgramme was launched in November2014, and the company now buys rice andother produce from several hundred localfarmers in its three partner chiefdoms. Inaddition to providing this market linkage to

its outgrowers, Lion Mountains will, in time,also supply training and inputs in order toassist them in increasing their yields anddiversifying their output.

Currently Lion Mountains sells 50kgbags of rice to market stall holders forabout US$40 to US$50 each, with the localcommunity given a share of the profit.

The company is led on the ground bymanaging director Mike Gericke, fromZimbabwe, who brings 40 years ofexperience of farming in Africa.

As a Phoenix Africa company, LionMountains has an explicit social impactremit: its goal is to turn development into aprofitable business. It has therefore agreeda significant programme of social impactcommitments with its partner chiefdoms,which are also deeply pragmatic inensuring that this will be a successful,sustainable business. The interests of thecompany and the local communities arealigned, guaranteeing the continuingsupport of the local people for theoperations, and the security of land tenurefor the future.

The social impact commitments are setout clearly in the original agreements withthe three partner chiefdoms and are

local smallholders and provide marketlinkage

� The company will build roads andbridges in partner chiefdoms

It places a very highvalue on good relations with its partnerchiefdoms, and is highly confident thatsuccess in this area will help ensure a long-lasting and profitable business for manyyears to come.

Lion Mountains began operations inOctober 2014 and has developed a landarea in Lugbu Chiefdom as a pilot phase,with rice and groundnuts planted inDecember. This development is the initialstep in rolling out a portfolio of 14,000 ha,largely dedicated to the production of ricefor domestic consumption. For these

seasonal operations, Lion Mountains hireda workforce of 120 local people.

As for the future, with almost nocompetition, Lion Mountains plans to be thebiggest producer of food in the country inthree years, and then expansion for exportis the long-term goal. h

A project to overhaul the rice seed system and improve farmers’ access to allrice seeds in the Northern and Upper East Regions has been launched.

THE THREE-YEAR INITIATIVE, dubbed ‘Rice Seed ScalingProject,’ is being implemented by the Africa Rice Centre, incollaboration with the Agricultural Technology Transfer (ATT)Project, Savanna Agricultural Research Institute of the

Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-SARI), Alliancefor a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), and some selected privateseed companies and extension agencies.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)is funding the project with one million dollars, while Africa RiceCentre is providing the technical support to ensure a successfulimplementation.

The objective of the project is, amongst others, to improve seedplanning and connect actors along the rice seed value chain, as wellas strengthen capacity of rice seed value chain actors to stimulate thedevelopment of a sustainable rice seed system in northern Ghana.

The move is to ensure that 1.5 tons of quality breeder seeds areproduced yearly by SARI and purchased by private sectorcompanies, 50 to 60 tonnes of quality foundation seeds areproduced yearly by four private seed companies, and purchased bycertified seed producers, and 2,000 - 2,500 tonnes of certified andquality declared seeds are produced yearly from 2016 by bothcertified seed producers and community-based seed producers andpurchased by paddy rice producers.

Dr. Stephen Nutsugah, director of CSIR – SARI, said at thelaunch of the project at Nyankpala near Tamale that the projecthad come at an opportune time to enhance food security, reduceimportation of rice and increase incomes of smallholder riceproducers, traders and processors through increased productionof good quality rice.

Despite various initiatives by government to increase riceproduction, the country still has a demand-supply gap that is beingfilled through importation of more than 350,000 metric tonnes (mt)annually, costing more than US$600mn.

The country’s total rice demand will reach some 820,000 mt

annually in a few years’ time, for which a boost in domesticproduction becomes paramount to meet such rising demand.

Dr. Nutsugah, therefore, said the project would collaborate withother rice project initiatives, by delivering interventions that soughtto address the challenges facing the country’s rice industry, toensure the production of increased and good quality rice to meetthis rising demand.

Dr. Olupomi Ajayi, consultant, rice sector development and riskmanagement officer at Africa Rice Centre, said, “This project isunique because at the end of the project, we must leave behind arice seed system that functions well and is sustainable, and itsimpact should be felt by everyone involved in the seed system.”

Dr. Ajayi expressed gratitude to USAID for providing the financialsupport for the project, which would address the constraints andopportunities identified in the country’s national seed policy.

Brian Conklin, deputy office director/agriculture team leader,Office of Economic Growth of USAID, called for effectivecollaboration with other rice sector projects, to ensure thetransformation of the country’s rice industry. h

PALM OIL

Zambeef division aims to capitalise on growing demand for edible oil.

ZAMPALM IN MPIKA is Zambia’s first ever palm plantation.The plantation boasts 2,800 hectares of palm plants which,when harvested, will produce crude palm oil that is the basicingredient in most vegetable oils on the market in Zambia.

The locally produced palm oil will enable the government to cutback on crude palm oil imports which currently stand at overUS$70mn annually.

Involving the communityWith its first nursery set up 20 km away from the main plantation site,near Chief Kopa’s palace, Zampalm was keen to get the communityinvolved from the very start.

“This was something new and on a scale that has never been donein the area before so there were concerns on the part of the localcommunity. However, with the help of Chief Kopa, we were able tocommunicate what was happening," said Trusted Mwiinga, who hasbeen in the agriculture sector for over 25 years and has worked onthe project from its inception by Zambeef Products in 2009 asZampalm’s plantation manager.

Getting the plantation up and running was no easy task with littleinfrastructure in place and a site that was cut off from the rest of Zambia;so management had its work cut out and only after overcoming theinitial setbacks was the project truly able to move forward.

“We had the first seedlings fail due to water stress. Farming requiresdedication, especially if the crop is one that has not been farmedbefore. The seedlings tend to suffer in the winter period but after threeyears they are able to adjust and cope with the weather conditions.With the help of some expert advice the challenges were addressed,”explained Mwiinga.

“Mpika is a sparsely populated area; what you can see now if youvisited the plantation is endless neat rows of palm trees. Thelandscape looks very different compared to the time when we firstcame here. It was much like the Kafue plains; full of grass, anthills andthe ground was very rough. There was no need for tree cuttingbecause the place was virtually tree-free and no deforestation resultedfrom it,” Mwiinga recalled.

“We had no communication network, one had to go to the Boma tomake a phone call, which can be very difficult on the family man as, inthe beginning, that was only possible once a week. We also didn’t havefive star accommodation or power,” Mwiinga said of the early days.

The success of the project has resulted in improvement in socialamenities such as accommodation, water and power on theplantation and surrounding areas. Over the three years of its existencein the area, Zampalm has employed local people in its nursery,

plantation and workshop. There are currently 120 permanentemployees and 400 seasonal workers with these numbers expected torise as the harvesting and production begin.

With an untrained workforce comprised mostly of small-scalefarmers, fishermen and hunters, absenteeism and time-keeping poseda problem at first, but, with time, employees understood the workrequirements and adjusted their lifestyle.

Skills training benefits the communityThe community residents were also able to benefit from skills trainingin various areas such as weeding, spraying, chipping andconstruction, all of which were needed for the plantation to operatesmoothly. Given that the machinery in question was something thatthey had never seen before, the training was imperative for a safeworking environment.

“The plantation is taking shape and harvesting will commence in afew months and we will be able to see the fruit of our work. There’sbeen improved accommodation, water reticulation, roads, and I amvery happy to be a part of this legacy,” said Mwiinga.

The Zampalm project was launched in 2009 and currently hassome 370,900 palms planted over an area of 2,612 hectares (ha) inthe main plantation, with another 39,000 seedlings in the main andpre-nursery. Zampalm owns 20,238 ha of titled land, and theintention is to plant a total of 4,812 hectares in 2017 and similarareas in subsequent years as the business grows.

A two-tonnes-per-hour crushing mill was built this year, with plansfor a second two-tonne plant in 2017 and a further 10-tonne plant in

the following year, taking crude palm oil production up to 17,000tonnes a year.

The total investment cost is estimated at US$41.5mn, of whichZambeef has spent US$20mn so far. At current prices the averageproduction of crude oil of 3 to 3.5 tonnes per hectare could generatemore than US$170mn in revenue over the next decade.

Growing market for edible oils The market for edible oils in Zambia, of which palm oil is onecomponent, is estimated at 120,000 tonnes per year, and this isexpected to continue growing as the country develops further.

More than half of Zambia’s edible oil consumption is importedfrom the Far East, East and South Africa.

Palm oil is the world’s most used vegetable oil and has manydifferent uses in addition to cooking. Palm oil and its derivatives arefound in foods such as margarines and ice cream, used as a thickener,preservative and antioxidant; as well as in personal care products suchas shampoo and cosmetics; industrial products such as lubricants,paints and inks; and as a renewable fuel.

Once fully operational, the plantation will contribute to substituting70,000 tonnes of cooking oil imported into Zambia, saving thecountry around US$70mn (K511mn) in foreign exchange outflowsevery year.

While Zambia is not a traditional growing region for palm oil, loweryields are expected to be outweighed by the competitive advantage ofbeing closer to consumers in the region given that the cost ofimporting edible oil from the Far East can account for around a thirdof its retail price.

Social and environmental benefitsIn addition to the commercial and economic benefits of the Zampalmplantation the initiative has provided a number of social andenvironmental benefits, including the creation of employment andinfrastructure in the remote community in the area, which has highpoverty levels.

Traditionally, the Bisa people in the sparsely populated area ofSenior Chief Kopa were fishermen, hunters or cassava farmers. SinceZampalm was launched there are now shops springing up and theeconomy is growing and changing livelihoods.

People can educate their children and improve their houses, withthatched roofs replaced with iron sheets; some children are now goingto high school; people can buy new clothes; and health has improved,said Mwiinga.

There are two government health posts that are 15 and 20 kmaway but Zampalm has provided transport to the clinics, including anambulance to Kopa clinic and Mpika District Hospital.

Zampalm is also planning an outgrower scheme with the companyproviding seedlings. It has already given the nearby school 100seedlings to plant. h

With the tremendous growth of the floriculture industry in Kenya over the last few years,stakeholders have looked upon the annual Naivasha Flower Fair to showcase their newinnovations and products to growers and other interested parties. Mwangi Mumero reports.

THE FLOWER INDUSTRY hasrecorded growth in volumes andvalue of cut flowers exported eachyear from 10,946 tonnes in 1988

compared to 86,480 tonnes in 2006,120,220 tonnes in 2010 and 136,601tonnes in 2014.The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics

indicates that, in 2014, the flower industryearned US$546mn. It is estimated that over500,000 people depend on the floricultureindustry which impacts over two millionhouseholds.According to the Kenya Flower Council

(KFC), an association of growers andexporters, Kenya is the lead exporter of rosecut flowers to the European Union (EU) witha market share of 38 per cent.Approximately 50 per cent of the

exported flowers are sold through DutchAuctions, although direct sales have beengrowing in recent years.In the United Kingdom, supermarkets are

the main retail outlets.Other destinations of Kenyan flowers

include Japan, Russia and the USA.The main cut flowers grown in the country

are roses, carnations and alstromeria.Others include gypsophilla, lilies, eryngiums,arabicum, hypericum and statice.The main production areas are around

Lake Naivasha, Mt Kenya, Nairobi, Thika,Nyandarua Kericho and Kiambu.This year’s Naivasha Flower Fair

attracted over 200 exhibitors drawn fromaround the world as well as thousands ofvisitors from Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania andRwanda among others.

A wide range of products and servicesExhibitors brought a wide range of productsand services that included farm inputs,banking services, breeding services, securityconsultants, management systems,transport and logistics and communicationappliances.

Among the exhibitors was the Eco-Group East Africa, which was showcasingits soil improvement products at the fair forthe first time.The Kenyan-registered company, which

has sourced its technology from the US,has been in operation for the last twoyears.“We utilise fish waste such as guts, fins

and the head to manufacturer biologicalfertilisers that enhances soil aeration,ameliorates soil conditions and moderatessoil pH. It also revitalises exhausted soil,reducing its sodium content in the process,”observed Mia Metcalf, an American and thedirector of the Eco-Group East Africaduring an interview with African Farming attheir stand.According to Metcalf, their products

target roses and vegetables in commercialunits and also for smallholders.Their products - in liquid formulations -

can be applied through drip irrigationsystems or in foliar forms.

Soil analysis is vitalFor effective use of crop nutrients, soilanalysis is vital. This is a service offered byanother firm exhibiting at the Fair.“While large scale growers are almost

100 per cent certain to carry out soilanalysis on their farms, uptake bysmallholders is slow. Smallholders need tounderstand the value of analysing the soilbefore growing any crop as it helps toreduce input wastage,” said Cecilia

Wambua, technical sales agronomist atCropnuts Laboratory Services.Depending on the farmer’s needs, the

firm analyses different soil parameters suchas soil chemistry, pathology, nematodes,water content and effluent.Another firm, NIRP International, has

been a regular feature at the past fairs.Headquarted in France, the company

breeds flowers - mainly roses for growers inNaivasha - and is the main breeder in thecountry.

Developing new flower codesThe company researches and develops newflower codes using production, bud sizes,colour, and susceptibility to diseases asparameters.“Every year at least 700 new flower

codes are developed for the growers inKenya, France, Ecuador, Ethiopia andTanzania. The new codes are then taken toflower propagators before being releasedto growers. Each stem can give threestems,” noted Danielle Mae Spinks, salesmanager with NIRP East Africa.According to Ms Spinks, exhibiting at the

growers and exporters to manage theiractivities.“This software helps growers to manage

their activities online. Finance, crop history,auditing, harvesting, costing, quality controland compliance can be captured andmanaged through this software, availingneeded information in real time. It can becustomised to the grower’s needs and willtrack every aspect in all operations in realtime,” said Kelvin Gachari, a projectmanager with Muddy Boots Software, aKenyan firm.The software costs US$1,300 which

includes set up, user training and one yearof support.New innovations that can help cut on

high energy costs were on display at the Fair.

Clean energy solutionsSpecifically, clean energy solutionsexpected to help cut the monthly billsattracted quite a crowd at the fair.“This solar pumping system fulfills the

concept of low carbon, energy conservationand environmental protection. It caneffectively be utilised in irrigation systemsand can be remotely controlled,” saidEugene Reeksting, of Laser EngineeringSolutions, the company behind the solarirrigation system.

The unit consists of solar panels, a solarpumping inverter, three phase AC pumpand a water storage device. It uses solarenergy to pump water from a borehole,dam or river directly to an irrigation systemor a storage tank.While new products were the range at

the fair, a new Dutch-funded project aimedat boosting flower and tomato productionwas also unveiled.Funded by a consortium of Dutch

companies and the Dutch government, theGreen Farming project aims to train localfarmers in sustainable use of fertilisers,water and labour with a focus ongreenhouse technologies.“We have studied the Kenyan

horticultural farmers and we feel there is aneed to boost their practical skills. We aim

at increasing production per unit area usingresources sustainably,” said Nico de Groot,a senior project manager with the project.The project has already constructed

greenhouses in Isinya, Kajiado County, tostart farmers’ training in November 2015.“We will work with farmers’ groups and

offer monthly courses on tomato cropmanagement. In the long-term we believethe consortium will be able to do businesswith these farmers as they becomesuccessful producers,” asserted de Groot.Through the project, farmers will also be

trained on the use of clean energy such asolar to save on their power costs.While the flower industry looks rosy,

players in the sector lament on differentchallenges hampering the full potential ofthe sub-sector.“With devolution of agriculture

management to the counties, the cost ofdoing business has been rising. There is alack of clarity as to which authority - centralgovernment or the counties - should collectwhich taxes. This has led to double taxationon the part of growers,” said JohnstoneMulary, an advocacy and lobby officer withthe Kenya Flower Council while speaking toAfrican Farming.Overall, 44 per cent of revenue collected

by the flower growers goes to taxes, a figureMulary described as ‘extremely high’, callingfor the streamlining of the taxation regime.At the same time, the cost of power is

prohibitive with a medium 20 acre farmpaying at least US$200,000 per month forelectricity charges.Some growers have developed solar and

hydropower plants in their farms to cut ontheir energy costs.“Kenya stands to lose as farmers migrate

to Ethiopia and Rwanda as well as Ecuadorand Colombia where production costs arelower. There is also a need to open updirect flights from Nairobi to the US towiden the flower market,” said Mulary. h

How AFAP is boosting Africa’s fertiliser markets.

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA is home to 214mn of the world’s805mn malnourished people, according to the UN’s Foodand Agriculture Organization (FAO). This, despite Africahaving the largest remaining tracts of arable land and the

world’s fastest growing economies. Two primary reasons for thesehigh levels of hunger and malnourishment in Africa are lowagricultural productivity and poor soil management.Small-scale and rural farmers in sub-Saharan Africa face

challenges in acquiring agricultural inputs. Chief among these islimited access to fertiliser and seed. Shortages of inputs arecommon in developing economies and are a huge constraint toproductivity in this region. According to FAO, farmers in sub-Saharan Africa face

particularly acute constraints. These include poor output priceincentives, high fertiliser prices, lack of liquidity or credit and lackof knowledge on correct fertiliser use. There is a need to rapidly increase fertiliser utilisation levels in

sub-Saharan Africa in order to accelerate agricultural productionand economic growth. FAO states that on average, agricultureaccounts for 32 per cent of the GDP of countries in the sub-Saharan Africa region and most of the poor and malnourished livein rural areas and rely on agriculture-based activities for theirlivelihood. Therefore, improved performance of the agriculturesector will have a positive impact on economic growth and will alsoreduce poverty, hunger and malnutrition.

What goes into Africa’s cropland soil?Sub-Saharan Africa has a combination of high soil nutrient deficitsand very low fertiliser use. The International Fertilizer IndustryAssociation (IFA) says the region utilises 12 kg/ha of fertiliser. Thisis in comparison to over 150 kg per hectare in Asia. Sub-SaharanAfrica’s low fertiliser usage is attributed to a set of failures in theinput and output markets. Ultimately, this leads to lower crop yields.

Reasons for low fertiliser use A number of factors undermine farmers’ capacity to utilise fertiliserand reap the benefits. The demand side is impacted by poor priceincentives and highly seasonal and variable production due toincreasing rainfall variability. Other factors are the lack of liquidity,credit or insurance, lack of physical access, and lack of knowledgeon the correct use of fertilisers. With low and dispersed demand, the fertiliser industry remains

largely underdeveloped. Suppliers also cannot make the economiesof scale that would reduce the high costs of transporting, stockingand distributing fertilisers. As a result, fertiliser sold in sub-SaharanAfrica is the most expensive in the world.

What is being done to ensure food security in Africa? On the 5th May 2015, high level agriculture technical experts,political decision-makers and fertiliser industry representativesannounced an ambitious plan to increase the commercial supplyand distribution of fertiliser on the continent. These leaders, fromgovernment, private sector and the civil society sector, announcedan innovative fertiliser trade promotion initiative called the East andSouthern African Fertilizer Trade Platform (ESAF). As a solution,ESAF aims to enable the effective trade and cost reduction offertiliser that promotes both access and utilisation by smallholderand rural farmers. This, ESAF hopes, will boost yields andproductivity and take agro-based workers out of poverty.This new initiative aims to take fertiliser procurement and

distribution to scale in East and southern Africa through the creation,growth and strengthening of 500 fertiliser and agribusinessenterprises. It is the brainchild of the African Fertilizer andAgribusiness Partnership (AFAP). The nonprofit developmentorganisation aims to establish sustainable and competitive privatesector-led fertiliser markets that provide smallholder farmers withaffordable, quality fertilisers at the right place and time. The keyoperating mechanism for AFAP is agribusiness partnership contracts(APCs) under which eligible international, regional and localagribusinesses apply for AFAP assistance to enter or expand their

footprint in the African fertiliser market. AFAP’s assistance includes acombination of credit guarantees, matching grants, technical andlogistical support, and training of local farmers and entrepreneurs.In return for AFAP’s assistance, agribusinesses perform marketdevelopment activities with local farmers and/or agribusinesses,such as extension support and business management training.AFAP’s objective is to rally the public and private sector behind

this initiative through joint efforts to: create a more conducivepolicy and regulatory environment to increase investor confidence;identify investment opportunities in the agriculture sector andfacilitate investment; provide market information and researchintelligence on the fertilizer industry in the region; facilitatebusiness-to-business linkages to increase regional trade; improveaccess to finance all along the value chain; and promote sharingof lessons learned and good practices.The ESAF initiative has extensive private and public sector

support and is led by the Secretary-General of the Common Marketfor Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Mr Sindiso Ngwenya.Its plan was signed off and adopted as a COMESA project at theCOMESA Ministers of Agriculture meeting held in Kinshasa,Democratic Republic of Congo in November 2014.

Why is ESAF the solution?With its strong public and private sector linkages, the keystakeholders on ESAF are manufacturers, importers, distributors,agro-dealers, farmers’ organisations, and many more interestgroups benefitting from the increased trade and utilisation offertiliser in African agriculture. Focused on the COMESA region, the fertiliser trade initiative has

the potential to improve the lives of millions of people due to bettercrop yields and improved food security that will lift many on thecontinent out of hunger.Commenting at the launch of the initiative, AFAP vice president,

Professor Richard Mkandawire said: “We have implemented publicsector-led mechanisms to improve agricultural production, but thathas not worked quickly or efficiently enough. The reality is that theprivate sector is important and governments cannot do it alone.The free market has a role to play in achieving the right economiesof scale but only if the policy environment is supportive of those thatwork under such policies. ESAF stands to ensure that private sectorand government open up the fertiliser market in a way that allowsuniversal access for small and rural farmers”.AFAP regional director, ESAF Trade Platform, Dr. Maria Wanzala,

said, “Our smallholder and rural farmers need to have anadvantage in order for their agriculture businesses to succeed.

Making the right inputs available will be the biggest first step inalleviating poverty and feeding our continent. Growth for sub-Saharan Africa depends largely on how well we can feed ourselves.”Commenting on the launch, Fertilizer Association of Southern

Africa CEO, Mostert, said, “Governments must allow the privatesector to approach the fertiliser market as a business and allow thefertiliser industry to develop to the potential of the country. Weshould aim to achieve economic growth and poverty reduction byenhancing the productivity and profitability of agriculture throughthe development of the fertiliser sector. ”Alliance for Commodity Trade in Eastern and Southern Africa

CEO, Argent Chuula, said, “Our call is to grow the Agriculturalinputs sector, so as to have adequate improved Agricultural inputsfor our farmers, in order to achieve food security”. As these leaders made their commitments to the success of ESAF

and increased food security, Africans are hopeful the initiative willcontribute to a better and food secure future.

AFAP’s achievements through APCs Smallholder farmers in the Chokwe region of Mozambique haveturned their fortunes around after devastating floods reduced themto near destitution. In 2015 alone, 12,000 farmers received74,000 metric tons of fertiliser, through a co-operative that enteredinto a partnership with AFAP in 2013.Heavy rains that hit the region in 2010 and 2012 affected

thousands of people, mainly smallholder farmers. In an effort toreclaim their livelihoods, the farmers, together with partners,formed a co-operative society – the Limpopo Valley AgriculturalSociety (SAVAL) to boost productivity.In July 2012, SAVAL was registered as a private input and output

market company with the main objectives of importing andsupplying agricultural inputs, tools, implements, and equipment.The co-operative also markets agricultural products and providesextension services to producers within the Limpopo Valley.The co-operative later evolved into a business with 12,000

farmers growing rice as the main crop on more than 18,000 ha.However, the smallholder farmers had no access to finance forpurchase of the much needed inputs, expecially fertiliser. In 2013, SAVAL through the AFAP Supplier Guarantee, received

US$85,000 to kick-start the flow of fertiliser supply into the farmers’co-operative. In the meantime, the Mozambican governmentembarked on a major rehabilitation scheme to assist the farmers bysupplying technologies that would provide a constant supply ofwater. The farmers also opened a co-operative bank that wouldprovide finance for agricultural inputs.Since the partnership with AFAP, SAVAL can now procure bulk

inputs on credit from major suppliers in Mozambique and providefertiliser to its members at discounted prices. h

Current fertiliser technology can be very effective if properly used. However, the VirtualFertilizer Research Center (VFRC) is collaborating with global scientific teams to createfertilisers that provide these necessary nutrients but mitigate environmental harm.

WHEN MINERAL FERTILISERresearch and productionbegan in the early 20thcentury, scientists focused on

producing large amounts of product toaddress nutrient depletion in cultivated soilswhere fertility and productivity had declined. The Haber-Bosch Process was no

exception. It set the stage for an industrialfertiliser revolution. Now the nitrogenfertilisers produced via that processsignificantly contribute to feeding half theearth’s population. But it is a double-edgedsword, with fertiliser overuse harming theenvironment and humans. The VirtualFertilizer Research Center (VFRC)collaborates with global scientific teams tocreate fertilisers that provide these needednutrients but mitigate environmental harm.

“Application of primary nutrients only (ie,nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium [NPK])mine soils of secondary and micronutrients(SMNs). This depletion levels off yieldpotential,” said Christian Dimkpa, VFRCresearch scientist. “In addition, the overuseand poor management of nitrogen resultsin contamination of water sources andemission of greenhouse gases.” In other cases, though, underuse of NPK

fertilisers limits yields and intensively minessoil nutrients. This situation, according tothe World Bank, is “a scenario for disasterover the long run.” Therefore, fertiliserresearch should move beyond NPK-onlyfertilisers and, considering crop needs,incorporate other nutrients alongside theseprimary nutrients.NPK alone does not guarantee long-term

universal yield increases because cropsrequire 14-17 nutrients, depending on thecrop. Adding boron, calcium, magnesium,

sulfur and zinc and a number of otherSMNs will be required to sustain yields. TheVFRC researches SMN interactions withcrops to identify specific crop needs. “Theuse of fertilisers should be about feedingthe crop and not the soil,” argued Dimkpa.Current nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) sits ata low average of 33 per cent, with most ofthe nutrient being lost via denitrification,leaching, runoff and volatilisation. Additionof SMNs to widely-used fertiliserformulations – and for specific crops andlocations – creates the potential for higherNUE. The underuse of N is a similar story.

African soils hunger for SMNsSoils in Africa, Eastern Europe and, to alesser extent, the Middle East and SouthAmerica, hunger for not only SMNs but alsonitrogen and phosphorus. The impacts ofunderuse are at first obvious: if crops arenot “fed,” they will not grow. Over time, theplanting of highest-calorie-per-acre crops(such as maize and rice) drain soil nutrientsto the point of intense degradation.Application of the primary nutrients andbest management practices (such asresidue management and legume rotations)proved the foundation for reinvigoratingthese tired croplands, but optimal yields willonly be achieved when SMN needs are met.Many of these nutrients enhance theefficiency of nutrient uptake by plant roots,especially of N and P – ultimately leading tohealthier plants and larger yields.

Proper packaging enhances the effects ofbetter uptake and, therefore, lessensenvironmental harm. Simply, innovativefertiliser packaging means rethinking theform in which nutrients are encapsulatedand presented to plants. Currently, fertilisersare available in prill, granular powder,liquid and briquette forms, among others.Some of these are more efficient than otherforms, but the VFRC believes significantlybetter improvements can be made. “Weenvision that future fertiliser research willadvance from bulk engineering andchemistry to fine bio-nano-chemistry,” saidVFRC executive director Prem Bindraban.While packaging technologies this way mayresult in higher costs for farmers in the shortrun, overall, they will use less fertiliser –saving money and reducing fertiliser’senvironmental footprint. “This strategy maybe particularly relevant for micronutrientsthat are required in small quantities buthave high yield effects,” said Bindraban. The VFRC aims to create synergy between

research organisations, universities and theprivate sector to lead the way in futurefertiliser research and overcome thechallenge of feeding nine billion by 2050under exacerbating climate conditions. “Canit be done? Of course,” Bindraban noted,“But we must collaborate with a sense ofurgency and correct vision. Current fertilisertechnology can be very effective if properlyused. But we can certainly make futureproducts more efficient.” h IFDC

Proper maintenance is particularly important for centre pivot systems becausetheir many moving parts create more potential for breakages, and alsobecause of the sheer volume of farmland which they can cover.

SINCE ITS INVENTION in 1940,centre pivot irrigation has becomean increasingly popular choice forfarmers around the world. Used

from North America to Australasia andeverywhere in between, this mechanisedsystem enables people in environments asinhospitable as the Sahara Desert to growcrops, while also saving on labour andwater compared to other methods.However, in order to maximise efficiencyand take full advantage of the extensiverange of benefits that come with using thissystem, proper maintenance is extremelyimportant.

“The sole purpose of the pivot is to applywater to a crop,” explained Kent Crawford,senior product support specialist at centrepivot manufacturer Valley Irrigation.“Failing to maintain machines can causedowntime and prevent growers fromapplying water when it is most needed and,as a pivot gets older and experiences morewear and tear, maintenance becomes evenmore essential.”

The importance of proper maintenance isalso greater for centre pivot systems thanwith other irrigation methods, not onlybecause their many moving parts createmore potential for breakages, but alsobecause of the sheer volume of farmlandwhich they can cover. With a length ofanything up to more than a kilometre, aseemingly minor fault towards the outside ofa pivot can affect many hectares of crops.

Todd Merryman, manager of technicalservices at another centre pivotmanufacturer, Reinke, explained: “Since thecentre pivot irrigation systems can cover alarge growing area, then you put morecrops at risk if that system isn’t maintainedand kept in good operating condition.” Thefirst and most obvious step towards

achieving this is ensuring that the system isproperly installed in the first place – a factwhich becomes even more important giventhe finely tuned, highly customised nature ofcentre pivot systems.

“There is no such thing as a genericcentre pivot irrigation system,” saidMerryman. “All modern centre pivotirrigation systems are highly customisableand therefore they have to be criticallydesigned and configured for theapplication.” Designers take a range offactors into consideration when creating asystem for a particular piece of land, such asfield size, soil type, intended crop andavailable water – including both the volumeof water per minute and the water pressureavailable. “If they are not installed asengineered, it will definitely make a bigdifference. That’s why they should always beinstalled by a reputable and knowledgeablecrew who know what they are doing.”

Properly installed, a centre pivot systemcan last for many years – Merryman told ofone which is still functioning after 35 yearsin the field. However, to achieve this sortlifespan, as well as maximising crop yieldsduring this time, there is a need for whatMerryman called “preventative maintenance”.

Preventative maintenance“The idea of preventative maintenance isthat an operator should never allow thesystem to get in such a bad state of repairthat it is down for any particular reason,”said Merryman.

“Proper maintenance can preventproblems from developing,” agreedCrawford. “Key areas that require regularattention include gearbox oil levels andkeeping clean oil, maintaining seals, andtightening electrical components andconnections to prevent electrical problems.Regular maintenance of nozzles andregulators is also important.”

Regulator springs can wear out over timeand a number of problems can occur withindividual sprinkler nozzles. Generallyconsidered to have a lifespan of around tenyears, the consensus is that issues with thenozzles are due more to wear thanspontaneous malfunction. “There are twothings that can happen with the sprinklerhead,” explained Merryman. “It can eitherhave a leak because it’s been broken offsomehow, or it could be plugged.”

One potential cause can be when waterfrom lakes, rivers and other impure sourcesis used to feed the system and, over a

period of time, sediment and other debrisaccumulates to plug the nozzle. “Generally,good, clean, deep well water won’t causeproblems, but you have to consider that theorifice that the water comes through is very,very small, so it doesn’t take anything thatbig to plug that up,” Merryman said.

Alternatively, small pieces of debris canforce their way through the orifice to createa larger hole, allowing more water out thanwas originally intended. If this occurs acrossthe whole system, it has the potential to

effect not only the crops being directlywatered by the broken nozzles, but the entirefield, as it could cause a reduction in systemwater pressure. Centre pivots are customdesigned to take in and give out a certainamount of water at a certain rate. Increasingthe flow rate of a significant number ofsprinklers will therefore create a situationwhereby the pre-determined water intake isunable to keep up with output, causing aknock-on effect on the other sprinklers.

“The outcome would be a less than

desirable water pattern and will ultimatelyeither over-water or, in most cases, under-water some of the crops,” said Merryman.“So the operator won’t have even wateringacross their field and will start to see areasthat show stress due to under-watering.”

The good news is that the majority ofthese issues can be easily prevented.

Regular checks for wear and tear“The best way to avoid these problems is toregularly check for wear and tear,” saidCrawford. “We recommend checkingnozzles after every 5,000 hours of use andat the beginning of every irrigation season.”Sprinklers which are plugged, leaking orover/under-watering should be fairly easyto spot with a basic visual inspection.Plugged sprinklers can be remedied bysimply cleaning out the nozzle, while brokenunits can be replaced at relatively little cost.

manufacturer. “A temporary fix tends tobecome permanent,” Crawford says. “If youput the wrong size nozzle on, it usually juststays there and, if enough of thesetemporary fixes occur, it affects the waterapplication throughout the entire machine.”

Temporary replacements can thereforecreate the very problems – incorrect waterpressure, irregular watering patterns andover/under-watering – which replacing thenozzle was intended to prevent.

Leaks, if left unchecked, can cause asimilar raft of problems. “The system and thesprinkler package is designed for adesignated amount of water volume andpressure,” said Merryman, “so leaks of anykind – whether its actually on the system orthe plumbing that brings water to the system– are taking away from the water volume thatthe system was assumed to use.” One or twosmall leaks shouldn’t have too much of animpact, but they quickly add up. Again, thebest way to avoid this is by performingregular visual checks on the equipment andfixing leaks as and when they occur.

Most centre pivot irrigation systems comeequipped with pressure gauges to monitorwater pressure, which can be useful –particularly for detecting leaks to

underground piping which could nototherwise be seen with the naked eye.However, visual inspections are still vitalbecause, as Merryman pointed out, “it willtake a fairly sizeable leak before you noticethe difference in pressure – we’re talkingprobably about 100 gallons per minute lostbefore you start seeing much fluctuation”.

Other important things to check includemaking sure grease fittings on drive trainsand bearing points are properly lubricated,checking the voltage meter to ensure thatthe electrical power is staying within theoperating parameters of the system, andchecking for proper tyre inflation to preventthem from coming off the rim or causing the

pivot to get stuck. “These are all thingswhich can be easily checked by theoperator,” said Merryman.

However, for a comprehensive list ofmaintenance checks needed for a certaincentre pivot model, operators should alwaysconsult the manual. “Specific preventativemaintenance along with safety considerationsis always outlined in the operator’s manualfor the irrigation system, regardless of thebrand,” said Merryman. “That should befollowed very closely. It lays out themaintenance schedule – not only what needsto be done but over what time period – andwill go a long way towards preventing anyproblems or outages in the field. h

COMBINE HARVESTERS

All the leading combine harvester manufacturers have introduced new orupdated models for next year’s crops, offering improvements to output andoperating efficiency. Mike Williams reports.

BOTH ROTARY AND conventional straw walker separationmodels have benefited from the improvements. Rotaryseparation has been gaining popularity, particularly on highcapacity models for big acreages, but straw walker models

are still the popular choice in African countries with about 60 percent of the sales total according to figures from New Holland.

One of the recent arrivals in the New Holland harvester range isin the high output category and there is also an entry level additionto the popular TC range. TC models with straw walker separationare New Holland’s most popular combines throughout Africa, andthe new model is at the lower end of the scale for power andharvesting capacity. Called the TC4.90, it has four straw walkersinstead of five in the other three TC models, and the maximumengine power is 175hp. The header width options are 3.96 and5.18metres, the drum is 1.04 metres wide with 0.607-metrediameter and the grain tank capacity is 5000 litres.

New Holland harvesters with five straw walkers have maximumengine outputs from 175 to 258hp, the header widths are up to6.10 metres on the top two models and the grain tanks hold 5200litres on the TC5.70 with 6400 litres capacity on the TC5.80 andTC5.90 combines. A feature on all TC models is the doublecascade cleaning shoe with a 450mm sloping pre-sieve plus anadjustable fan to provide increased capacity, and the optionsinclude a moisture sensor to help the operator fine-tune the settingsto match changing crop conditions.

Six models in the CR seriesThere are six models in the CR series with rotary separation basedon the twin rotor system originally introduced by New Holland 40years ago. The newest model is the CR10.90, the most powerfulmodel in the range with a 653hp engine and equipped with a14,500-litre grain tank and a choice of headers up to 13.7 metreswide. New Holland claims the 10.90 offers the highest outputavailable, setting a world harvesting record with a 99.7 tph workrate in an independently verified eight-hour test.

Improvements to the Lexion 700 series combines feature in thelatest developments from Claas. The first Lexion combines arrivedin 1996 and there are five models in the latest 700 series for the2016 harvest. Maximum power outputs are from 405 to 625hpusing Mercedes-Benz engines in four models and a 503hp Perkinspower unit in the mid-range 760 model. The ‘Dynamic Cooling’system, previously restricted to the top three models but nowincluded as standard equipment on all 700 series Lexion combines,automatically matches the cooling fan speed to the requirements ofthe engine. Reducing the fan speed in light load situations canmean power savings amounting to 15hp or more.

Lexion harvesters are equipped with the Claas Hybrid threshingsystem, combining the APS primary unit to begin the process while

the Roto Plus system deals with the grains that are more difficult toextract. To maintain high levels of output in difficult harvestingconditions a new Automatic Crop Flow (ACF) control has beenadded to Lexion 700s to help identify peak loads and avoid threshingsystem blockages. ACF monitors the Hybrid threshing system and theengine speed, and it alerts the driver and automatically takesremedial action when pre-set load levels are exceeded.

Because of the increased output and cutting widths up to 12.3metres, new straw chopping and spreading equipment is used onthe latest Lexion 700s. The chopping drum width is increased toprovide a more uniform flow of crop material and achieve a moreconstant chop length, and the extra width also distributes thechopped material more evenly over a bigger area. The spreader’sprevious hydraulic drive has been replaced by a mechanical systemto achieve a more constant operating speed, and the spreader cannow be controlled from the cab.

Developments in the John Deere rangeSales of combines with rotary separation have been increasing inAfrica and there has been a big move away from straw walkermachines, but the situation is not the same in all countries, accordingto John Deere. The biggest markets for the rotary machines are incountries with highly mechanised farming, and in some of thesenearly all the medium and larger capacity harvesters are rotaries, butin other countries, where the market is dominated by smaller capacitymachines, straw walker separation remains the popular choice.

John Deere sells a full range of combines in Africa from smalltractor-powered trailed models to the big S series with single rotorseparation, and their S series combines are currently the mostpopular models throughout Africa. In South Africa the S series hasbeen the market leader for the last three years, and their marketshare is still increasing, according to John Deere.

Developments in the John Deere combine range are centredmainly on the W and T series models. Output increases of up to 15per cent are achieved by a series of design changes that include thebiggest active separation area and the largest cleaning shoe areaavailable in this class of combine, and a faster unloading ratemeans the 11,000-litre capacity grain tank can now be emptied inless than 90 seconds, a 30 per cent improvement that can achievebetter trailer utilisation.

The diameter of the main threshing drum remains unaltered at660 mm, but the area available for active separation has beenexpanded by increasing the wrapping angle of the concave by eight

degrees. The diameter of the rear separator drum has been enlargedto 500 mm, said to be the biggest in the industry, and the separatorgrate has been redesigned to provide more openings and offerincreased efficiency over a wider range of harvesting conditions.

A completely new cleaning shoe design provides 6 sq m of sievearea, among the biggest in this class of combine, but usingaluminium to make the new shoe has avoided a weight increase.The fan has also been redesigned to simplify cleaning adjustments,and independent tests have shown that operators can easilyachieve high work rates while keeping grain losses at a low level.

A new feature on the T series combines and on some W seriesmodels is a 40 kph travel speed, and tracks area now available asan option for reducing soil compaction and to allow the combineto work in soft ground conditions.

Grain separation with the single rotor system originally introducedby International Harvester on their Axial-Flow combines was one ofthe major developments in harvesting technology. The number ofAxial-Flow combines sold so far under the International Harvesterand Case IH brand names totals well over 150,000 and the line-upfor the 2016 season includes three updated 140 series modelsoffering improved performance, operator comfort and reliability.

The Case IH Axial-Flow models covered by the design changesare the 5140 powered by a 6.7 litre engine producing 312hpmaximum output, and an 8.7-litre engine in the 6140 and 7140models delivers up to 400 and 449hp respectively. Thespecification changes include a new six auger bed positioned justbehind the rotor to replace the five augers used previously,providing increased capacity to convey crop material to the sieves.There is also a new Cross Flow Cleaning System to provideautomatic compensation and optimum grain flow while working onside slopes. The Cross Flow feature, which can be switched offwhen not needed, can compensate for up to a 12- deg slope andmaintain optimum output while working on steep land.

Changing between chopping or swathing the crop residue cannow be managed from the operator’s seat or by using electricalswitches mounted on the side of the combine, and there is also aswitch control to adjust the speed of the crop chopping unit. Thegrain and tailings augers are now easier to clean when moving intoa different crop, and the concave consists of six smaller and lighterelements to make it easier and quicker to change the setting

between crops. Another development includes rubber track optionsto reduce soil compaction while working in soft ground conditions,with 610, 762 and 900 mm track widths available.

There are two new models in the small to medium capacityActiva harvester series from Massey Ferguson, including an entry-level 7340 combine powered by a four-cylinder engine. The 4.91-litre engine in the 7340 develops 176hp, and using four cylindersinstead of the usual six for this power output reduces friction andother power losses for improve fuel efficiency, the makers say. Thenew Activa model has five straw walkers and is the replacement forthe Activa 7240. It has new operator controls plus a redesignedsectional concave to allow a quicker changeover between differentcrops. It is also equipped with a 600 x 1340 mm cylinder giving thelargest separation area in this class of combine.

The updated controls and the improved concave design alsofeature on the new Massey Ferguson Activa 7344 combine thatreplaces the previous 7244 model. It also has five straw walkers,but the engine has six cylinders with 218 hp output produced from7.4 litres. And it is available with a new 5.5m PowerFlow header.

Specification improvements to the Activa S series Specification improvements to the Activa S series combines with fiveand six straw walkers and with engine outputs from 243 hpupwards include a faster discharge speed for emptying the graintank, and a longer discharge auger is available to simplify grainunloading. The options list also includes a new 9.2-metre wideheader with a SuperFlow auger and quick adjustment facility.

This year’s addition to the Deutz-Fahr harvester range is thecompact C6000 series that replaces the previous 6040HTScombine. The new series is based on the standard C6205 modelplus a TS version equipped with a Turboseparator to boost the workcapacity by about 20 per cent. Both versions have a separationsystem with five straw walkers and a special feature is the DoubleGrain Return or DGR cleaning system that helps to reduce grainlosses and is a unique Deutz-Fahr feature. Options for the C6000series include a segmented concave that simplifies adjustments tothe settings when changing to a different crop.

The power unit for the C6000 series is a 6.1-litre Deutz enginewith 250 hp maximum output, and the specification includes a7000-litre capacity grain tank instead of 6500 litres on the previousmodel. The discharge rate is 75 l/sec. There are four standard grainheader options offering widths from 4.2 to 6.3 metres, and specialheader equipment is available for harvesting sunflowers.

Information on the C6000 combines’ quality of work isconstantly monitored by the Deutz-Fahr Combine ControlManagement or CCM unit. This provides instant access to data thatcan help the operator to maintain optimum harvestingperformance in varying crop conditions. h

AGCO - Massey FergusonMassey Ferguson will exhibit its50,700 tractor at Agritechnica,which comes with the very latestemission technology, enablingclean air to leave the machine’sexhaust. According toCampbell Scott at MasseyFerguson, while Africa’sagricultural sector is stilldeveloping, in the near futuremachines such as the 50,700will be needed.

“Africa is not in that leagueyet but I think that it will besomething that will come fairlysoon. These mowers andimplements we already sell inSouth Africa and we’re going toexpand them into the rest of theregion - so on this occasionAfrica is leading. We couldarrange new improvements forour combine harvesters andbalers as well,” Campbell toldAfrican Farming.

John DeereJohn Deere has expanded itsrange of mid-size 6R and 6MSeries tractors, now with a totalof 14 new four-cylinder andlarge frame six-cylinder modelswith Stage IV/Final Tier 4engines from 110 to 195hp toreplace the current StageIIIB/iT4 compliant models.

While the 6R is readilyavailable, the 6M will be on themarket from November 2015.These enhanced tractors featurebetter manoeuvrability,enhanced operator comfort, awide choice of transmissionsand the option of up to sixSCVs. The new 6R Series four-cylinder premium tractorsfeature 4.5-litre John DeerePowerTech PSS engines. The six-cylinder versions, however, areequipped with 6.8-litre JohnDeere PowerTech PVS engines.All new 6R Series tractors areinstalled with John Deere’sintelligent power managementsystem (IPM), which adds 15 to

31hp on the four-cylindermodels and 47hp on the six-cylinder versions.

JCBThe Fastrac tractor range offersfull front and rear suspensionfor both comfort and traction.G External disc brakes provideexcellent heat dissipation andbetter performance than the oil-immersed systems seen onconventional tractors.

“Fastrac tractors with fourequal sized wheels are used in

the sugar cane markets forhauling big trailers full of cane,”said Nigel Chell at JCB.

Other agricultural machineryon offer from JCB includecompact backhoe loaders andtelescopic handlers. Accordingto Chell, JCB’s small compactbackhoe - the 2DX - is 50hp,which he noted has becomeincreasingly popular.

“Its entry level price makes itmore affordable than thetraditionally European style ofmachinery.”

In Africa JCB revealed that itsfocusing on building its dealernetwork, with last year the firmintroducing a new dealer in SouthAfrica called Agrico - a companythat produces very large tractors,farm implements and irrigationequipment. According to JCB,previously it did not have anagricultural dealer in the region,however Agrico has about 22outlets. In the meantime, Chellstated that the firm is appointingnew dealers in Zambia,Zimbabwe and Botswana.

JCB recently announced that it will also unveil new developments to its Loadall range.

Next to itwas the Puma 180 model from the Puma series of multipurposetractors, designed to handle a variety of tasks in mid-sizedlivestock and farm operations. The third tractor on display was theJXT75, which is aimed at small-scale farmers looking for aversatile machine.Speaking about the agriculture sector in Egypt, Nadir Ekiz,product marketing manager for Africa and the Middle East atCase IH, said, “Agriculture is still a significant contributor toEgypt’s economy and despite the small area of arable landavailable, the country’s agricultural sector is one of the mostproductive in the world.” Ekiz said that the company is ready toanswer the demand for advanced farming equipment and keeppace with the market’s productivity needs. “Our tractors arespecifically designed for helping our customers to get the jobdone efficiently and cost-effectively, exactly the way they want toand whatever the size and type of their farms,” he added.

CARGILL AND THE Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) havesigned a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to engage indiscussions to set up mini mills in various areas of rural Zambia.Recently Cargill launched the Chipata mini mill in Eastern Provinceas a pilot project to explore the establishment of further mills.According to a recent statement, Cargill’s general manager inZambia, Lezanne van Zyl and IDC CEO, Andrew Chipwende,signed on behalf of their respective organisations.‘’Cargill’s mini-mill project with IDC will evaluate the viability ofsmaller commercial dry maize mills in the Eastern and Northernprovinces and together the two companies believe the mini millproject has potential for expansion beyond Chipata,’’ the statementreads in part.The statement says Cargill is investigating how best to expand its assetsfootprint and believed by strategically placing smaller processingplants could leverage its existing small-scale farmer originationcapabilities with the merchandising and supply chain expertise.Cargill is also expanding into other areas north of Chipata, servingthe communities in smaller urban places, necessitating for the modelto be tested for the benefits it may bring to smallholder farmers.In another development, Cargill has launched Sungani Banja(translated as ‘Look after the family), a barter scheme that will offerlocal farmers the option to exchange their maize for mealie-mealwhen they use its mini-mill in Chipata. The system works by providing farmers with coupons to the value oftheir crop, which they can redeem for mealie-meal.The Sungani Banja offering comes in the wake of Government’sappeal for the private sector to get involved in improving foodsecurity across the country by providing reliable, affordable andsustainable sources of food for the Zambia populace, especially inrural areas. NEW HOLLAND DISTRIBUTOR, CMCMotors officially handed over 50 TS60002WD tractors to Butali Sugar Mills Ltd (BSML)in a ceremony held in July at the customer’sfactory in Western Kenya. These units will jointhe company’s fleet of more than 200 NewHolland 90 horsepower TS90 and TS6000tractors.BSML has a raw cane crushing capacity of2,500 TCD (tonnes crushed per day). Themills are fed by 30,000 contracted farmersscattered within the Western Sugarcane belt.To collect the cane from the farms, BSML runsa fleet of 200 New Holland tractors pullingsugarcane wagons, with each unit operating20 hours per day spread over three shifts.With the addition of the fifty new units, BSMLowns the biggest fleet of TS6000 2WDtractors in sub-Saharan Africa. The TS6000 tractors run a powerfulintercooler turbocharged four-cylinder enginethat delivers high torque rise and requires lessmaintenance. They are available with achoice of mechanical transmissions: anEconoshift transmission with 24 forward andsix reverse speeds and a synchro commandsimple and robust transmission with 12

forward/reverse speeds fully synchronised inthree ranges. The single-piece front drive axleefficiently transfers power to the ground andthe rear axle is designed for maximumperformance and durability.
