Reach to Recovery
African Agenda organised the 17th Reach to Recovery International Breast Cancer Support
Conference which was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 20-22 March
2013. Hosted by Reach for Recovery South Africa, the 17th RRI conference welcomed more
than 350 delegates from 44 different countries. The programme was extensive with 5 concurrent
sessions as well as pre-conference workshops, poster presentations and keynote addresses.
Logistical management included a social programme, arrangements for more than 170 bursary
recipients and an exhibition for partner organisations and the trade.
Actuarial Society 2012 Convention
The Actuarial Society of South Africa’s 2012 Convention was held at the Cape Town International
Convention Centre. The number of delegates again showed how important the Convention has
become to members, with just under 1,100 delegates in attendance. The scientific programme was
broken into 8 streams, and papers and presentations given concerned the theme “Taking Charge
of Uncertainty: Insight, Innovation and Integration”. Keynote speakers include Hania Zlotnik, former
UN demographer Professor Brian O’Connell and Dr Louise van Rhyn on education in South
Africa and how the profession can contribute, and National Planning Commission Minister Trevor
Manuel. The Convention Dinner was held off site at The Lookout, a spectacular venue overlooking
the Atlantic Ocean. African Agenda’s responsibilities included venue management, onsite logistics,
programme and speaker management, social programme management, marketing assistance with
an interest in social media, sponsor liaison and exhibition management.
IIFA 2012
The International Investment Funds Association (IIFA) Conference was held in Cape Town
from 21-24 October 2012. Hosted by the Association for Savings and Investment South Africa
(ASISA), the event was attended by delegations from 36 different countries. The 3-day conference
comprised panel discussions from leading investment experts from across the world as well as
South Africa’s Minister of Finance. The programme was complimented by a welcome reception at
Groot Constantia, a gala dinner at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, an afternoon
of organised excursions around the city, and the option of a post-conference safari as well as an

WEHC 2012
African Agenda gave a full organisational service for the The 16th World Economic History
Congress, presented by the Economic History Society of Southern Africa and Stellenbosch
University’s Department of Economics, which took place from 9 to 13 July 2012. Leading Harvard
University Professor James Robinson, the co-author of a best-selling new book, “Why Nations Fail:
The Origins of Power, Prosperity and Poverty”, was a keynote speaker. Finance Minister Pravin
Gordhan also addressed the delegates in a Plenary Session.
The 5-day congress took place during the winter season, traditionally a quiet time of year for
tourism in Stellenbosch, and African Agenda estimates that the conference made a significant
impact on the economy: 1 988 room nights booked were through African Agenda, hotel
accommodation income was R1.526-million, guest house accommodation income was R125 000,
tour operator income was R178 000 and airport transfer income was R101 000.
The congress itself comprised 128 sessions plus 30 posters over 5 days, a Welcome Dinner, a
Cultural Evening and a Farewell Reception, a full accompanying person’s package, an exhibition,
and a book launch. There were 782 delegates from 55 countries in total, including 27 bursary

The 6th Science Centre World Congress (6SCWC) was held in Cape Town, South Africa from 4-8
September 2011. Hosted by the Cape Town Science Centre, the Southern African Association
of Science and Technology Centres (SAASTEC), and the North Africa and Middle East Science
centers network (NAMES), the 6SCWC welcomed more than 400 delegates from 56 different
countries. The scientific programme comprised 5 plenary sessions and 55 concurrent sessions,
as well as poster sessions, demonstrations, World Cafés and 2 film screenings. The social
programme included a Welcome Reception addressed by Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille,
evening excursions to the Two Oceans Aquarium and the Iziko South African Museum, and a
Gala Dinner at Moyo on the Spier Estate.
Actuarial Society 2011 Convention
The 2011 Convention was held at the Sandton Convention Centre and was, with more than
1000 delegates in attendance, the best-attended annual Actuarial Society Convention yet. With
the theme “African Actuary in a Global Village”, the programme comprised topics concerning an
innovative financial services industry in South Africa and across Africa and keynote addresses by
Baroness Lynda Chalker and Greg Link of the Stephen Covey Leadership Center.
ICA 2010
Most recently organised ICA 2010, the International Congress of Actuaries, a 6-day event held
at the CTICC in March 2010, with 2,000 participants. The 5-day programme included 2 catered
evening events for in excess of 1,500 guests and 5 days of sessions consisting of 90 sessions
across 10 rooms and 200 speakers. Keynote Speakers included Minster of Finance Pravin
Gordhan and Dr Mamphela Ramphele. Other responsibilities included the production of a social
programme inclusive of outdoor social events and dinners at the Premier’s residence and at
the Castle of Good Hope; the development of an intricate afternoon excursions programme for
delegates and accompanying persons; an exhibition for the associated trade; and the raising of
sponsorship which attracted support in excess of R3,250,000. www.ICA2010.com
AORTIC 2009
Organised AORTIC 2009, the 7th international cancer conference of the African Organisation
for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) in November 2009. Held in Dar es Salaam and
attended by 750 delegates (excluding accompanying persons) this event was a follow-up to the
exceptionally successful event hosted in Cape Town in 2007. The 5-day programme comprised
more than 50 sessions and 200 speakers, an exhibition for the associated trade and included a
welcome address by the President of Tanzania. www.AORTIC2009.org
NIDS 2009
Organised the NIDS launch conference in August 2009. More than 100 academics and policy
makers attended this 2-day conference in Irene, hosted by the Southern African Labour and
Development Research Unit (SALDRU) at the University of Cape Town’s School of Economics.
The Minister of Planning, Trevor Manuel was the guest speaker at the conference dinner.
3rd Stop Cervical Cancer in Africa Conference Organised the 3rd Stop Cervical Cancer in Africa Conference in July 2009. Hosted by the
Princess Nikky Breast Cancer Foundation, the conference was attended by medical delegates
and African dignitaries at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West, Cape Town.

Actuarial Society of South Africa 2009 Convention
Organised the Actuarial Society of South Africa 2009 Convention in May 2009. This convention,
held in Johannesburg, was attended by 750 delegates. VIP speakers included Gill Marcus,
then Chair of ABSA. It was the 4th Actuarial Society Convention that African Agenda had
been a part of.
FISA 2009
Organised FISA 2009, the World Rowing Federation’s 2009 Extraordinary Congress, held at the
CTICC in Cape Town in February 2009, and attended by 150 delegates from 41 countries and
opened by the Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation.
Actuarial Society of South Africa 2008 Convention
Organised the Actuarial Society of South Africa 2008 Convention. Held in October 2008 at the
CTICC, this convention attracted 700 delegates and included a Welcome Reception, a New
Qualifiers Reception and a Gala Dinner. High-profile speakers included Judge Dennis Davis,
Judge President of the Competition Appeal Court, Hendrik du Toit, founding director of Investec,
and 8 current and former actuarial association presidents from around the world.
Actuarial Society of South Africa’s Social Security, Retirement Reform and
Heath Care 2008 Conferences
Organised the Actuarial Society of South Africa’s Social Security and Retirement Reform 2008
Conference in September 2008. This 2-day conference was held in Johannesburg and attracted
200 delegates. The Health Care 2008 Conference in August 2008 was held in Johannesburg and
attracted 120 delegates.
Actuarial Society Convention 2007
2-day annual convention of the Actuarial Society of South Africa, held that year in Johannesburg
at the Sandton Convention Centre, with over 500 delegates.
AORTIC 2007
Over 450 medical delegates from 46 countries attended this 5-day conference at the CTICC,
hosted by the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer. The programme
comprised 5 parallel sessions, 141 speakers and oral presenters and 116 poster presenters.
Logistical management included a social programme, arrangements for more than 170 bursary
recipients, a large exhibition for partner organisations and the trade and an intricate programme
with 7 concurrent venues.
SAACI 2007
In 2007 we were honoured to be given the opportunity to organise a conference and exhibition for
250 of our peers: the annual conference of the Southern African Association for the Conference
Industry (SAACI) held in July at the ArabellaSheraton Grand Hotel (now Westin Grand Cape
Town Arabella Quays). Responsible for programme development and logistical management, we
also sat on the organising committee. VIPs on the programme included Minister of Environmental
Affairs and Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk and Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool.

AES 2007
This academic gathering was the 12th annual AES Conference, hosted by the African
Econometrics Society and held at the Southern Sun the Cape Sun Hotel. Delegates from all
over Africa attended the 2-day conference, which included plenary and parallel sessions and a
conference dinner at Kirstenbosch.
Open Society Institute 2007 Partners Meeting
Organised the Open Society Institute 2007 Partners Meeting held in June 2007, attended by 120
international delegates.
NMT 2007
This 3-day sustainable transport conference was held in February 2007 in Midrand and was
hosted by the South African Department of Transport, attended by 439 delegates.
VIPs on the programme and in attendance included Minster of Transport Jeff Radebe,
Department of Transport Director-General Mpumi Mpofu, and representatives of the FIFA
Soccer World Cup 2010 LOC.
IAAHS 2007
The International Actuarial Association Health Section Colloquium took place in May 2007 and
hosted over 225 international delegates from 25 countries at the CTICC. Fully responsible for the
programme development, we managed a committee of 8 and designed a 4-day programme with
43 speakers. We also assisted with fundraising and the sponsorship receipts exceeded budgeted
expectations considerably. In total over R400 000 was raised.
Stroke 2006
We acted as the Destination Management Company for Kenes International’s 2500-delegate
medical congress in October 2006. Responsibilities for the event held at the CTICC included
transport planning, day trips and pre- and post-congress tours.
Velo Mondial 2006
A 5-day international sustainable transport conference for 350 delegates, hosted by the City of
Cape Town and held at the CTICC. Conference elements included a 4-day scientific programme
with more than 40 speakers and 91 poster presentations, and a full day of technical site visits.
VIPs on the programme included Minister of Transport Jeff Radebe, Professor Tim Noakes of the
Sports Science Institute, Dr Carlos Dora of the WHO and cycling commentator Phil Liggett. The
conference was scheduled to coincide with the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour and logistical
arrangements included group cycle tour registration and post-race reception.
CMI Colloquium 2006
The Comité Maritime International, an international maritime law association, holds a 3-day
colloquium every 3 years in a city with a maritime history and industry. The most recent
colloquium was held at the CTICC in Cape Town in February 2006, hosted by the South African
Maritime Law Association (SAMLA). 320 delegates attended a 3-day scientific programme
complemented by a lavish social programme including a welcome reception, an afternoon
excursion to the winelands and a gala dinner.

Organised the Entertainment Education 2004 international conference on educational media, a
4-day conference for 400 delegates
Eskom corporate awards event
Organised an Eskom corporate awards event for 1700 people in December 2004.
Access 2004
Organised Access 2004, a 3-day conference on disability hosted by the Provincial Government of
the Western Cape in November 2004 and hosted at the CTICC, which attracted 350 delegates.
VIPs on the programme included then-Deputy President Jacob Zuma and the Deputy Mayor of
Cape Town.
United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)
Full planning and implementation support for the United Nations Institute for Training and
Research (UNITAR) 2002, 2003, 2004 Sub-regional Training Programmes.

Actuarial Society of South Africa’s 2013 Convention
African Agenda has been appointed to organise the 2013 Convention for the Actuarial Society of
South Africa. It will take place in Sandton and will likely attract more than 1,100 delegates. African
Agenda will provide a full organisational service, including marketing, programme management,
and publications, as we have done since 2009. It will be the 6th Convention that African Agenda
has been a part of.
AORTIC 2013
African Agenda has been appointed to plan and execute its 3rd conference for The African
Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC). AORTIC 2013 will take place in
Durban from 21-24 November 2013 and expects to attract in excess of 850 delegates. The
4-day conference programme will have a Call for Abstracts, a significant bursary offering, and 5
concurrent sessions each day. The trade component of the conference is significant with many
sponsors and exhibitors and the participation of the pharmaceutical industry which requires
special care and expertise. The social programme will include an Opening Ceremony with
entertainment, a Welcome Reception and a Gala Dinner.
IMVC 2014
The 10th International Mine Ventilation Congress will take place at the Sun City Resort from 2 to
8 August 2014. African Agenda will organise and execute the congress working closely with hosts
the Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa. 600 international delegates are expected and the
7-day programme includes pre-conference workshops, concurrent sessions and technical visits
to mines in the area.
IFAC 2014
Appointed PCO (Professional conference organiser) for the 19th International Federation of
Automatic Control World Congress (IFAC 2014) to be held in Cape Town in August 2014 and
expecting up to 3000 delegates.
