Implementation Status Overview
The NBI centers have made good progress in the initial months of NCORE execution and the project performance has been satisfactory since its initiation. NCORE (financed bygrants from the Nile Basin Trust Fund and the Cooperation in International Waters in AfricaTrust Fund) is the primary project currently supporting the Nile Basin Initiative activities.
In spite of the complex and evolving hydro-politics of the Nile Basin, the NBI Centers, with the support of NCORE, have been able retain core staff and skills. Sudan has also now

resumed full participation in the NBI and has paid its contribution in full to NileSec after 4 years.
Key procurements for the NCORE project are underway, including procurement of consultants (individual and firms) - e.g. for the feasibility study of Muvumba irrigation project. Todate, 26% of the project's funds have been disbursed to the client.
The NBI Centers (NileSec, NELSAP CU, and ENTRO) are improving knowledge generation and access, investment preparation, and outreach efforts. ENTRO has been releasing
regular flood forecasting bulletins (including to help Sudan on recent flooding) as part of NCORE activities. The NBI centers are improving public domain access to the wealth of information generated, collated, and analyzed over the last decade through improved cross-center coordination. The Nile-Information System website has been steadily increasingwith over 30,000 hits per month. NileSec has launched an NB DSS helpdesk. NELSAP CU has initiated work to help South Sudan develop a power generation masterplan and isprocessing procurement for the irrigation and watershed management investment preparation studies in the NEL region under the NCORE. The NileSec organized a successful NileDay even in February 2013, with over 400 people participating from government ministries, universities, civil society organizations, development partners and other stakeholders. Around that time, ENTRO organized an NCORE Kick-off meeting to showcase earlier work on knowledge base, modeling tools, and a new website, and brainstorm on plannedactivities with 70 participants from Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan from the NBI centers, ENSAPT, ministries, academia, and development partners, and signed MOUs towork with UNESCO-IHE and support the Tana-Beles Integrated Water Resources Development Project. The NBI has initiated training workshops at many different levels: workshopsto improve understanding and functionality within riparian governments; continuation of the successful internship program at ENTRO and initiation of a similar program at NELSAP;and designing capacity-building workshops on dam safety, climate mainstreaming, etc.

Key Decisions Regarding Implementation
The Bank team will continue to work closely to work with the NBI centers to streamline NCORE implementation and sustainability.
The Bank is also considering an NBI request for additional financing (for about $5m of remaining Nile Basin Trust Fund resources) for scaling-up development effectiveness.Proposed activities being considered include investment preparation, knowledge and analytical tools, communication, and outreach and an integrated NBI approach to build capacityin the new nation of South Sudan that recently joined the NBI.
An upcoming mission in September, 2013 will review project progress and additional financing plans in greater detail.
