“I now have the opportunity to better myself and go to college and accomplish in a career. Now I feel like I belong.”

—former client of ILCM

“Now I have hope that even though I’m from a minority, a higher education is still something I can acquire. To me it’s the proof that the United States of America is one of the countries that allows immigrants to have an opportunity to become successful and improve our way of life.

—former client of ILCM

“I no longer have to be afraid of being separated from my family.”

—former client of ILCM

“At ILCM, we believe that justice needs champions who will use all of their wits and resources to work to defend and empower those who have been left without voice. There is so much left to do to make this belief a reality. So we continue to grow, learn, collaborate, and support as we open paths to progress.”

—John Keller, Executive Director

SEIU Local 26 and ILCM offer an informational workshop for community members on President Obama’s executive action for immigration reform, just two weeks after the President’s announcement on November 20, 2014.

ILCM played a strategic role in the 2014 launch of the Center for New Americans at the University of Minnesota Law School. ILCM continues to work with and support the Center’s mission to expand urgently needed legal services for noncitizens, pursue litigation that will improve U.S. immigration laws, and educate noncitizens about their rights.

U.S. Representative John Kline’s staff member meets with Karen Velez, a Minnesota DREAMer and former client of ILCM, as well as Reverend Paul Erickson, ILCM policy associate Felipe Illescas, and Karim Bardai, member of the U.S. military and constituent of Representative John Kline’s district. ILCM funded a trip for this delegation to lobby for immigration reform in Washington DC during the 2013-2014 legislative session.

ILCM’s State Advocate of the Year award winners were recognized at ILCM’s 2014 Gala for their efforts in bringing about historic change in passing the Minnesota DREAM Act.

John Keller, executive director of ILCM, was presented with the prestigious Ohtli Award by the Mexican Consulate. It is the highest honor given to an individual who has shown remarkable dedication towards the empowerment and development of Mexican and Mexican-American communities.

Bao Thao, ILCM staff attorney, attends a Hmong outreach event in St. Paul.

In 2014, ILCM significantly increased its capacity to serve Hmong and Somali-speaking populations with the addition of two new bilingual legal staff members. Approximately 36 percent of ILCM clients are from Africa and Asia, with large portions of these clients speaking Somali and Hmong.

Andrea says that it would be impossible to choose her favorite book because there are so many she loves. At 17 years old, she prefers stories with brave heroines who always save the day, and her dream is to become an editor of science fiction novels. “Without the help of attorneys from the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, my dreams wouldn’t be possible.”

Andrea was born in Mexico and her parents brought her to Minnesota when she was just one year old. She says she remembers being a very energetic and social little kid, growing up in rural Minnesota. On the weekends she would always visit the autoshop her dad owned and watch him fix cars, or go to her mother’s taco stand to get a snack. She was carefree and didn’t realize how much of a hindrance her undocumented status would be until she saw how hard life eventually became for her older siblings. After her older sisters graduated from high school, they were heartbroken to watch all of their friends go off to college, while they had to stay behind and find jobs working in restaurant kitchens or cleaning houses.

When Andrea’s mother heard an announcement on Spanish radio about a new program called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), she knew Andrea was young enough to be eligible and was excited to help her apply. They were assisted by an attorney from ILCM who guided them through the application process. Eventually Andrea received a letter in the mail saying she had been approved for DACA.

Andrea’s mother says she and her husband left their home in Mexico, came to the United States, and worked hard establishing their own businesses so that their children could have a better life. “My daughter has had DACA for two years. She has been able to get a driver’s license, get a summer job, and start preparing for college applications. There’s so much she can do now. I want her to choose whatever inspires her most—and of course I’ll be here to support her.” Although Andrea’s mother does not qualify for any existing immigration programs, she is relieved that her daughter is able to benefit from DACA. “Even though I know that these programs can’t help me, my life is better just knowing that my child is safe, and that ahead of her is a bright future.”

“THERE’S SO MUCH SHE CAN DO NOW. I WANT HER TO CHOOSE WHATEVER INSPIRES HER MOST — AND OF COURSE I ’ LL BE HERE TO SUPPORT HER.”
