It’s a city that virtually invented the ‘shopping festival’ (Dubai Shopping Festival, or DSF). With its huge shopping malls, amazing hotels, a dizzying array of dining options and fantastic night life, it’s easy to see why this is now such a popular destination. But under the bright lights and glamorous surface another Dubai exists. Head to the Heritage Village during Ramadan or the DSF and you’ll witness a different Dubai, where local Emiratis take joy in their songs, dance and traditions. Spend a few fascinating hours by the creek, watching the dhow (traditional wooden boat) traffic and the abras weave along the waterway while smoking some sheesha. Walk the streets of the tranquil, restored Bastakia area or take a stroll through multicultural Karama or Satwa. You’ll find this Dubai a million miles removed from the frenzy of the five-star hotels. Whatever you end up preferring, Dubai is a fascinating place and a city-state that’s like no other.

When to goDubai enjoys year-round subtropical sunshine. The perfect time to visit is from November to April, when temperatures hover at around 80 degrees. If you visit during Ramadan (the timing depends on the lunar calendar, so you need to check the dates), be aware that restaurants, bars, and cafés close from dawn until sunset, although hotels will have venues open for guests, and non-Muslims shouldn’t eat, drink, or smoke in public areas. Once the sun goes down, however, things get festive, especially in the run-up to Eid, the last day of the fasting month. Hotels erect large tents where locals gather to smoke fruit-flavoured sheesha (water pipes), eat traditional snacks, and drink copious amounts of Arabic mint tea. Dubai is also a city of festivals; you might want to plan your trip to coincide with the Shopping Festival, when shops slash prices and hold regular raffles (with prizes including cars, jewellery, and apartments). The dates change yearly, but it is usually toward the beginning of the year - check with the tourist office.

Getting aroundDubai has a fantastically well connected transport system. At its core is the Dubai Metro (www.dubaimetro.eu) the world’s longest fully automated rail system with 47 stations spanning 75 kilometres linking the entire city to the airport. Metro trains are split into 3 classes and operate 7 days a week right throughout the day. Metro stations are also linked to numerous bus routes across the city. The metro system also includes water busses, tourist ferry and one of the cities must-dos, the Abras, traditional wooden boats that transport people across Dubai Creek.

Taxis are cheap, safe and can be hailed everywhere. Most drivers speak basic English. Dubai does not operate on addresses; everything is located with the aid of major landmarks (i.e., opposite the Burj Al Arab, near the Mall of Emirates).

Glitzy, glamorous and at times over-the-top, Dubai is home to just over 2 million people from more than 200 nationalities, it is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Driven by Sheikh Mohammed, a leader who doesn’t understand the word ‘no’, visitors are flocking to this Middle East metropolis in increasing numbers with the promise that Dubai is like no other city on earth. And Sheikh Mohammed is delivering.

OUR DUBAI TOP 10 ‘MUST DO AND SEE’

Shopping centres and malls are scattered around Dubai so you’re never far away from a full-on shopping experience. Some of the luxury malls include the Mall of the Emirates and Deira City Centre. Always remember to barter with the salesman - they expect you to.

Stewart Tip. Dubai Malls are attractions in themselves. Try the Souk Madinat inside the Madinat Jumeirah Hotel, which boasts its own waterway to transfer people from its shops, bars and restaurants to the neighbouring clutch of hotels.

    Shop till you drop

Dubai’s old town and spiritual heart is Bastakiya. Its wind towers and courtyard buildings now house art galleries (try Basta Art Cafe in Al Fahidi Street), and there remains a beguiling charm to walking its shaded streets.

Stewart Tip. Head for the excellent Dubai Museum, in Al Fahidi Fort, explains the city’s origins as a tiny fishing and pearl-diving port.

Step back in timeJump into a jeep for a desert safari. Expert drivers will negotiate towering red and gold sand dunes, some reaching up to 300m, to show you some dramatic desert landscapes.

Stewart Tip. After recovering from the thrills of the drive, turn your hand (and wobbly legs) to sand surfing. Just strap on a board and launch.

    Surf the dunes

Every few minutes an abra – little open ferry – Links across the Creek that splits old, original Dubai, dodging ancient dhows that trade around the Gulf. The one dirham (which is about 18p) fare could be the travel bargain of the century.

Stewart Tip. Head first to Baniyas Square Metro Station in Deira, for the gold, spice and tapestry souks. Take an abra to Bur Dubai, head through the Meena Bazaar to the restored Al Bastakiya quarter, all clean, cool streets, wind towers and traditional Arabian homes and galleries.

Golf in Dubai started on a sand course in 1971 but it has quickly grown into one of the world’s premier golf destinations. There are several world class courses and Dubai plays host to the finale of the European Tour – the DP World Tour Championships.

Stewart Tip. Be sure to play The Emirates and The Creek, two of the original grass courses in Dubai, then test your mettle on courses designed by and named after golfing legends Colin Montgomerie and Ernie Els.

    Desert golf at its best

The city’s diversity brings an array of authentic flavours. At the top end, the city’s grand restaurants serve up lavish seafood, European fine dining or fusion twists on Arabic and Asian cuisine. All the big international names are here including Gordon Ramsay, Pierre Gagnaire’s and Gary Rhodes,

Stewart Tip: Sample the wonderful and inexpensive like Pakistani curries and pavement dining at Ravi’s on Satwa Road (including rarely found Nihari beef and lamb stews from about £3), or try Mankhool Road for Lebanese and Egyptian meze.

    Eat on the cheap

Dubai is a sparkly place, and best viewed from altitude, particularly at night. Burj Khalifa, half a mile high and the world’s tallest structure, is the most unreal modern building, it looks like a computer-generated fantasy rising to a quite impossible height including the observatory on the 124th floor, For some sky-high sophistication, try the cocktail bar Vu’s at the top of Emirates Towers, which overlooks Sheikh Zayed Road, and the elegant Neos on the 63rd floor of The Address Downtown Dubai.

Stewart Tip. Check out the kaleidoscopic interior of the Skyview Bar at the Burj al Arab. You need to make an advance reservation with the hotel and, there is no time limit so you can stay all evening. Once inside hotel you can also look around the hotel.

    Hit the heights

Faced with some of the world’s worst traffic chaos, Dubai took just six years to plan, design and build one of the globe’s most daring and majestic public transport systems. The Dubai Metro is the world’s longest fully automated rail system, fabulously opulent yet open to all. It sails above the jams on its elevated track, linking the entire city to the airport.

Stewart Tip: Stand at the front where drivers would normally sit – redundant on this computer-controlled railway – and take in the stupendous high-rise cityscape close up.

    The jam buster

For a real break from the desert heat, the enormous Ski Dubai, the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East, has real snow, five slopes including the world’s only indoor black run, and a sledge park, all in an incredible 22,500 square metre arena. Kick back in the St Moritz café afterwards and you’ll almost feel like you are in the Alps.

Stewart Tip. Tickets for ski passes and the snow park will save you time if booked prior to your visit. Once booked you can head straight to the pre-purchased tickets counter at the resort and avoid the queue!

    Ski in the sun

You’ll definitely want to see the shore while you’re in town. The swanky beach hotels have partitioned off the majority of the sand, so if you’re not staying on the Jumeirah beach strip, your best bet is Al Mamzar, a public beach near the neighbouring emirate of Sharjah. Other good alternatives are Jumeirah Beach Park with its small coffee shop and AED 5 entrance fee, or the free stretch of sand running the length of Umm Suqeim, known as Kite Beach due to its popularity with the city’s kite-surfers.

Stewart Tip. If you want a truly luxurious beach experience, and you’re not in a hotel with a private beach, some will allow you to sit on their sand for a fee: Try Le Meridien Mina Seyahi (AED 250).

    GOLF IN DUBAI

Although golf has been played in the UAE since the 50s, it wasn’t until the late 1980s that the world started to recognise the Emirate of Dubai as a genuine golf destination. The superb Emirates Golf Club, with its Bedouin-inspired clubhouse and superb Majlis course opened in 1988 and hosted the first Dubai Desert Classic tournament just a year later.

Since then, the speed and quality of development has been astounding. Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club opened in 1993 to huge acclaim and there were soon some top players putting their names to superb golf developments across Dubai. Colin Montgomerie and Ernie Els both have signature golf courses and the outstanding Earth and Fire courses at Jumierah Estates were both designed by the legendary Australian major winner, Greg Norman.

The natural desert landscape combined with imaginative use of natural and man-made waterways, produce courses that offer a real golfing challenge and incredible visual drama. All Dubai’s courses have been designed with both the amateur and professional in mind with multiple tee positions, generous fairways and excellent greens.

There are direct flights to Dubai from a number of UK airports and with an excellent choice of high quality three, four and five star hotels, large clubhouses with an excellent range of amenities and fantastic golf Academies and practice facilities, Dubai is an obvious choice for golfers.

    The Majlis (Emirates Golf Club)

Dubai first Championship golf course and best known of all in the UAE, The Majlis was built on a tranche of landed donated by the ruling Sheikh. Within a year of opening, it was hosting The Dubai Desert Classic and has been enjoyed by many of the world’s top professionals. The Sheikh’s wish was for all the indigenous flora and fauna to be retained and this has resulted in a truly spectacular course with golfing challenges and visual drama in abundance. A must play course when in Dubai.

    The Faldo (Emirates Golf Club)

The Faldo is Emirates Golf Club’s second Championship course. The original Wadi course was redesigned by Nick Faldo in 2005 and opened to great acclaim in 2006. The main feature is the Wadi or valley right through the course. It is not a hazard as such but provides players with something to think about when deciding how to play this 7348 yard layout.

The Creek (Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club)

Dubai Creek comes into play on 4 occasions during a round on this immaculately prepared par 71 layout, while several artificial lakes, huge bunkers and Date and Palm trees punctuate the rest of the course. It has hosted the Dubai Desert Classic twice and is known the world over due to it’s incredible Dow sail-styled clubhouse.

    Earth (Jumeirah Estates)

Host of the DP World Tour Championship, this Greg Norman design is a fitting venue for the finale of the European Tour. However, there are tee positions that make The Earth Course and enjoyable challenge for amateurs. Features include rolling fairways, brilliant white bunkering and the Norman Mile – a series of 4 finishing holes that play alongside or over stunning water hazards.

    3. ABTA We are a Member of ABTA (ABTA Number P6486) We are obliged to maintain a high standard of service to you by ABTA’s Code of Conduct. We can also offer you an arbitration scheme for the resolution of disputes arising out of, or in connection with this contract. Further information on the Code and arbitration can be found on ABTA’s website www.abta.com. The arbitration scheme is arranged by ABTA and administered independently by IDRS, part of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. It provides for a simple and inexpensive method of arbitration on documents alone with restricted liability on you in respect of costs. Full details will be provided on request or can be obtained from the ABTA website.

The scheme does not apply to claims for an amount greater than £5,000 per person. There is also a limit of £25,000 per booking form. Neither does it apply to claims which are solely in respect of physical injury or illness or their consequences. The scheme can however deal with compensation claims which include an element of minor injury or illness subject to a limit of £1,000 on the amount the arbitrator can award per person in respect of this element.

The application for arbitration and Statement of Claim must be received by IDRS within nine months of the date of return from the holiday. Outside this time limit arbitration under the Scheme may still be available if the company agrees, but the ABTA Code does not require such agreement.

For injury and illness claims, you may like to use the ABTA/Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Mediation Procedure. This is a voluntary scheme and requires us to agree for mediation to go ahead. The aim is to help you resolve your dispute in a quick and cost effective way. Details on request or from www.abta.com.

    4. Your Holiday Price We reserve the right to alter the prices of any of the holidays shown in our brochure/website. You will be advised of the current price of the holiday that you wish to book before your contract is confirmed.

When you make your booking you must pay a deposit, dependent on the particular holiday package booked. The balance of the price of your travel arrangements must be paid at least 12 weeks before your departure date. If the deposit and/or balance is not paid in time, we shall cancel your travel arrangements. If the balance is not paid in time we shall retain your deposit.

The cost of your deposit is dependent on the particular package you have booked (eg certain flight tickets and low cost carriers require full payment at time of booking) and can vary from £150 up to the full holiday cost.

Changes in transportation costs, including the cost of fuel, dues, taxes or fees chargeable for services such as landing taxes or embarkation or disembarkation fees at ports and airports and exchange rates mean that the price of your travel arrangements may change after you have booked.

However there will be no change within 30 days of your departure. We will absorb and you will not be charged for any increase equivalent to 2% of the price of your travel arrangements, which excludes insurance premiums and any amendment charges. You will be charged for the amount over and above that, plus an administration charge of £1.00 per person. If this means that you have to pay an increase of more than 10% of the price of your travel arrangements, you will have the option of accepting a change to another holiday if we are able to offer one (if this is of equivalent or higher quality you will not have to pay more but if it is of lower quality you will be refunded the difference in price), or cancelling and receiving a full refund of all monies paid, except for any amendment charges.

We will consider an appropriate refund of insurance premiums paid if you can show that you are unable to transfer or reuse your policy. Should you decide to cancel for this reason, you must exercise your right to do so within 14 days from the issue date printed on your final invoice.

Should the price of your holiday go down due to the changes mentioned above, by more than 2% of your holiday cost, then any refund due will be paid to you. However, please note that travel arrangements are not always purchased in local currency and some apparent changes have no impact on the price of your travel due to contractual and other protection in place.

    5. If You Change Your Booking If, after our confirmation invoice has been issued, you wish to change your travel arrangements in any way, for example your chosen departure date or accommodation, we will do our utmost to make these changes but it may not always be possible. Any request for changes to be made must be in writing from the person who made the booking. You will be asked to pay an administration charge of £20 per person, and any further cost we incur in making this alteration.

You should be aware that these costs could increase the closer to the departure date that changes are made and you should contact us as soon as possible.

Note: Certain travel arrangements (e.g. non-flexible flight tickets or low cost airlines) may not be changeable after a reservation has been made and any alteration request could incur a cancellation charge of up to 100% of that part of the arrangements.

    6. If You Cancel Your Holiday You, or any member of your party, may cancel your travel arrangements at any time. Written notification from the person who made the booking on your behalf must be received at our offices. Since we incur costs in cancelling your travel arrangements, you will have to pay the applicable cancellation charges up to the maximum shown in clause 7.

Note: If the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of your insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these charges.

    7. If We Change Or Cancel Your Holiday It is unlikely that we will have to make any changes to your travel arrangements, but we do plan the arrangements many months in advance. Occasionally, we may have to make changes and we reserve the right to do so at any time. Most of these changes will be minor and we will advise you of them at the earliest possible date. We also reserve the right in any circumstances to cancel your travel arrangements. For example, if the minimum number of clients required for a particular travel arrangement is not reached, we may have to cancel it. However, we will not cancel your travel arrangements less than 6 weeks before your departure date, except for reasons of force majeure or failure by you to pay the final balance. If we are unable to provide the booked travel arrangements, you can either have a refund of all monies paid or accept an offer of alternative travel arrangements of comparable standard from us, if available (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value). If it is necessary to cancel your travel arrangements, we will pay to you compensation as set out in this clause. In accordance with EU Regulation 2111/2005 we are required to advise you of the actual carrier operating your flight/connecting flight/transfer. We do this by listing carriers to be used or likely to be used by advising at time of booking.

Any changes to the actual airline after you have received your tickets will be notified to you as soon as possible and in all cases at check-in or at the boarding gate.

Such a change is deemed to be a minor change. Other examples of minor changes include alteration of your outward/return flights by less than 12 hours, changes to aircraft type, change of accommodation to another of the same standard. If we make a major change to your holiday, we will inform you or your travel agent as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before your departure. You will have the choice of either accepting the change of arrangements, accepting an offer of alternative travel arrangements of comparable standard from us if available (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value), or cancelling your booked holiday and receiving a full refund of all monies paid. In all cases, except where the major change arises due to reasons of force majeure, we will pay compensation as detailed below:
