The Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillon, designed for avant-garde collectors and connoisseurs, showcases the advances made technically and aesthetically in watch making by Audemars Piguet.

A timepiece that boasts a case and movement in perfect harmony, it features a titanium case middle and integrated rubber strap that is combined with a ceramic bezel to frame the array of tourbillon carriage and second ‘GMT’ time-zone display inside. Look out for the flash of pure white centre-stage: an intricately machined upper bridge in white ceramic, made possible only now due to Audemars Piguet’s ongoing advances in materials science.

EVOLUTION OF THE CONCEPT First unveiled in 2002, the Royal Oak Concept was a tribute to mark the 30th-anniversary of Audemars Piguet’s legendary octagonal Royal Oak. Designed by Gérald Genta it was the world’s first luxury watch in stainless steel.

Using an ultra-hard Alacrite 602 case shaped to be more rounded, it features Genta’s signature octagonal bezel and its eight hexagonal screws. By leaving the dial off, the advanced micro-mechanics ticking within is exposed. All these revolutionary design codes are the hallmarks in the Concept series: in 2008, Royal Oak Carbon Concept Tourbillon and Chronograph, an ultra-light timepiece that was the first to combine a forged-carbon case and movement main plate; and in 2011, the Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillon offers ultra-light, ultra-resistant titanium case and black-ceramic octagonal bezel, push pieces and crown.

The 2014 Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillon intrigues watch lovers with a white ceramic bezel, crown and push pieces. This heightens the contrast with the titanium case middle. In addition, technical superiority in the manufacture of complicated watches is seen by its incorporation of ceramic into the movement itself. It replaces the blackened upper bridge of Calibre 2913 with white ceramic resulting in a visually transformed new Calibre 2930. Its dazzling, hourglass-shaped bridge is further enlivened by the double symmetry of the tourbillon bridges and GMT display.

MAGIC OF WHITE CERAMIC Because white ceramic is about nine times harder than steel, resistant to scratches and wear and tear, its use has made the manufacture of the Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillon more complicated and lengthy, requiring special tools as well. Hence the manufacture of the Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillon’s bezel, push pieces, crown and especially its intricately shaped upper bridge is more complex. Because ceramic is an almost totally scratchproof composite material , special milling-cutter machines equipped with diamond-tipped tools must be used. Other daunting technical challenge includes treating the roughed-out surfaces and edges that must be polished or satin-brushed finish due to ceramic’s inherent resistance to abrasion. It takes around eight hours to make the Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillon’s bezel, compared with 45 minutes if it were steel.

In addition, titanium is used for the case middle and sapphire surround. Besides being ultra strong, titanium is also comfortable to wear and it is twice as light as steel, making it ideal for a watch of such generous 44mm proportions. In addition, lightweight aluminium, which is hardened by anodisation, has also been chosen for the inner flange circling the dial in its quest to push the envelope when it comes to materials science.

TECHNICAL TOUR DE FORCE Audemars Piguet’s Concept watches pride on having state of the art ‘engine’ which is seamlessly integrated within its ‘chassis’, combining aesthetic that complements the exposed micro-mechanics. It is a technical feat celebrated by watch connoisseurs: The Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillon’s hand-wound Calibre 293 0 features a twin barrel that ensures 10-day power reserve, tourbillon and second time- zone ‘GMT’ display. In addition, its timekeeping is regulated by a 3Hz (21,600vph) escapement, rotating inside a tourbillon carriage every 60 seconds, compensating for the effects of the Earth’s gravity when the watch is oriented vertically for any length of time. +

French luxury jewellery PERLOTA has charmed women with its exquisitely designed fine jewellery which is now available in Singapore. Using powerful gemstones and magical colours, PERLOTA fine jewellery expresses a timeless elegance that honours and pays tribute to women, using distinctive designs that celebrate sensuality, authentic beauty and well being of every woman.

Launched in 2003, PERLOTA first made its name for its exclusive line of luxuriously holistic accessories for newborn and children. It became renowned for using the finest hand woven and embroidered natural linens, sweet and gentle words engraved onto gold medallions, personalised silver rattles and mother-of-pearl charms that pamper the little ones.

Drawn from her life experiences and travels, French designer and founder Sophie Bennani Pendleton created PERLOTA jewellery as an extension of the person’s well being. Like her tokens for children and babies, each creation is charged with an uplifting message of love, friendship or a hint of spirituality, resulting in unique and inspirational collections.

Besides offering beautiful, meaningful jewellery and

enhancing the wearer’s wellbeing, PERLOTA prides on its superior quality, selecting only the finest materials to be handcrafted into such unique and exclusive creations which first made its debut in 2007. Her latest, The Emblems Collection, uses crystals and gemstones that have long been cherished not only for their natural beauty but also for their therapeutic properties. These include the ability to energise, heal and protect its wearer. Rock crystal is believed to balance and revitalize while offering its wearer clarity of thought.

Drawing inspiration from the purity of crystals and gemstones, Sophie Bennani Pendleton said, “I have a relentless attraction toward gemstones which never cease to inspire me. Beyond being fascinated by their healing properties, I‘m simply mesmerised by the variety and array of colours, all created by nature. Personally, I feel that a cherished piece of jewellery can become a personal amulet, which can enhance our ability to be in touch with our emotions and nurture a positive state of mind. Gemstones and crystals are a wonderful way to connect with this energy.”

natural beauty and energy of clear rock crystal, which are showcased exquisitely in finely crafted 18k gold. Also used are golden south sea pearls, which are encased by intricate hand carved spheres of rock crystal transparent or with light inclusions to create almost ethereal pieces.

PERLOTA’s expert artisans use only natural gemstones and 18k gold to handcraft each jewellery piece. Other gemstones such as natural coral, lapis lazuli, onyx, turquoise and amethyst have been chosen for both their aesthetic value as well as holistic properties. A highlight in this collection is the bespoke creation “Dragon” necklace. It has been created by combining skillfully carved stone with gold, occasionally highlighted by precious stones or pearls. The “Dragon” necklace features a dragon pendant intricately carved from natural lapis lazuli and held by claws finely sculpted in 18kgold.

Today, PERLOTA is recognised for its exquisitely designed handcrafted pieces made from carefully selected precious, semi-precious stones as well as precious woods and rare golden south sea pearls. +

CEO of Genesis-Global Gems & Jewellery (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Kelvin Tan, uses his unique disposition to put his company at the forefront of offering rare diamonds and precious gems as highly lucrative alternative investment options with clear entry points and clear exit points. The former legal eagle combines his knowledge of and experience in the law and in financial instruments, as well as his deep knowledge of gemstones, armed with his immense passion for collecting precious gems, to provide insights of such investment opportunities to savvy investors.

topped up with the frills of luxurious service and ambience. You just have to experience our level of service to know the difference. The primary focus is to help our customers, who are looking for alternative investments, to beef up their investment portfolio by investing in rare precious stones,” explained Kelvin.

Rare diamonds and exquisite precious stones are attractive as an investment option that appeals to well-heeled customers who look for gems for their high appreciation value, which in some cases can be as high as thousands of percent over a reasonable period of a decade or two. Besides the lure of huge profits, precious stones are also, very often, an integral part of a family’s heirloom, thereby making their initial acquisition an important investment decision.

“These are rare products of Mother Nature that cannot be manufactured at will and therefore are in increasingly limited supply as old mines dry out and fewer new mines are discovered. In some cases, a certain precious stone may even be mined to extinction without the world ever knowing such fate. Some rare investment-grade stones are like Picasso paintings – because there is no more, or so little, supply that there simply isn’t going to be enough for the rising demand by the expanding affluent population in the key economic powerhouses of the world, such as China and India, which automatically drives up prices exponentially. Increasingly, there are now far more people looking for alternative forms of investments to protect their wealth from inflationary pressure, who are now parking a sizeable amount of their wealth in rare diamonds and precious stones. A very good example is fine jadeite of the glassy or icy variety with strong colour saturation, which has practically been snatched up by savvy Chinese investors causing price hikes of thousands of percent. Other excellent examples would be rare pink diamonds, as well as Burmese unheated Royal Blue sapphires and ‘Pigeon Blood’ rubies. Prices have skyrocketed and are still rising as we speak”, said Kelvin. “I always get the thrill whenever I call up

my customer just to share the good news of how much capital gains his or her stones have attained. It is always a joyous experience, knowing that they have invested well through my advice. In some cases, I even helped them get a quick exit with substantial profits!”

As purveyors of premium precious stones and rare diamonds, Genesis-Global, which also has business presence in Hong Kong, is armed with its own research and studies on the various stones and the trends in the global market to better advice customers. “Purveying fine jewellery is just one aspect of our business. The primary focus is dealing in rare premium stones. We deal in fancy coloured diamonds – pinks, yellows, blues and also chameleon diamonds, as well as unheated rubies and sapphires from Sri Lanka and Burma, and rare green garnets (Tsavorites) from east Africa, which are all very limited in supply. Practically anything rare that you cannot find easily, we will have our ways of getting it for you through our deep mining connections” said Kelvin.

The law graduate from Leeds University who was admitted a Barrister-at-law of Lincoln’s Inn, UK, has had an impressive legal career – he was appointed a Magistrate and a Deputy Public Prosecutor by the Singapore Legal Service Commission before he went into private practice and became in-house chief legal counsel of several MNCs and finally Prudential Assurance Company, Singapore, as its head of legal.

A collector of precious stones and jewellery for more than 16 years, Kelvin has long been fascinated by diamonds and other gems. Today as the visionary and chief strategist for the company,

Kelvin is well aware that he has to always be one step ahead of others to ensure that he has access to rare stones and also to critical market information that will aid in his forecast of the next big thing in the gems world. For someone who decides to leave a successful corporate career, Kelvin enjoys treading on unchartered waters despite the uncertainties and new challenges ahead.

“Life is unpredictable. I come from the school of hard knocks in the corporate world and I want to live my life fully with no regrets. I want to be able to look back at my life and say that I did something meaningful and was true to myself at every stage of my life and that I had followed my passion according to what best fits my heart at every stage in my life. I do not want to be just a lawyer who is well paid. Life is larger than that.”

“Even if I fail, at least I know that I have tried. Anyway, what is failure? How can one ever define that term? To me, everything is relative to a point of reference. So long as I am living my passion everyday, it does not matter that the goal posts will be constantly shifting.” +

Canali’s enchanting

shadow play with

yesteryear colours

and form

Guests had been streaming in throughout the chilly Milanese day. Soon enough, their curiosity was met by Canali’s trademark dapper. The Italian gentlemen’s label presented a fashion show that hung blocky, angular silhouettes reminiscent of 1980s pop culture, on relatively young models. Canali’s message was succinct – throwback looks are making a comeback for sartorial gents of all ages.

Whimsical mermaid-print pullovers draped over casual, high ankle cut-off trousers, while studious cardigans flagrantly tucked themselves into single- and double-pleated formal bottoms.

“Everyone’s wearing their ankle cutoffs with socks now, don’t you know?” Hummed the lithe footsteps that traced the immaculate runway.

Strutting in in solid colours, retro stripe combinations and polka dots, these striking pairs of pants had their fashion statements emphasised by a collection of blazers that manifested in a plethora of cuts.

Beautiful garments need to move gracefully too, and the Italian suit maker understands this all too well. A soliloquy reflecting Canali’s dynamic perspective of fashion, the flurry of feet marched to the anthem of brand’s provenance and savoir faire. Canali once astutely iterated this belief that it holds dear: “A man’s gestures represent his personality.”

The family-run label has come a long way since its humble tailoring workshop, set up by brothers Giacomo and Giovanni Canali in 1934. Only two generations later did Canali open its doors to customers beyond Italy’s borders. Today, the brand enjoys presences all around the globe, while manufacturing all its products within Italy from Italian resources.

With a couple of creations coming close to resembling pyjamas, overcoat-esque suit jackets made an impression on the fashion faithful present with massive retro lapels and tie pins at breast pockets, which were in turn furnished by quiet, straight-folded pocket squares. And then came the actual overcoats. They, along with mandarin jackets and blast-from-the-past double-breasted ones, sported slim waists that were emphasised by unapologetic crocodile belts.

Not a single modern slim collar was spotted amongst the young Tony Montanas and Manny Ribeiras who showcased Canali’s exquisite heritage pieces. In loud to soft flashes of cherry red, honey yellow, olive green and royal blue, these models stormed the Milan Fashion Week stage in done-before moccasins as well as a refreshing variety of espadrilles. Canali’s trademark browns and greys too enraptured the new foray with gentlemanly allure. The youthful and almost dreamy hues of the handsome prêt–à–porter spilt over from the flurry of formalwear onto macho bomber jackets and more mermaid-print items. 70 AFFLUENT aesthetic

FACING

Everyone aspires to shave years off their appearance and look better with each passing birthday. The concepts of beauty and youth have become nearly synonymous, which is why the trends of cosmetic surgery today have evolved to achieve both. People can now not only achieve their ideal image, but also look as youthful as they feel.

THE FUTURE

Turning back the clock has never been easier with stem cell-enriched

autologous fat grafting.

CHANGING REFLECTIONS As men and women age, telltale signs of it emerge most visibly on their faces. Prominent cheekbones, heavy jowls and sagging skin are bound to surface with an overall loss of volume as the face begins to hollow. It may have been only just years ago that a ‘gaunt’ facial appearance had a slightly shorter chin, fuller cheeks, a plumper forehead and higher anterior cheekbones, along with other distinctive signs of youth. With the multitude of aesthetic enhancement options available today, it is possible to reverse such deterioration and restore the beauty of the past.

Fat grafting is one of the most well-known procedures to rejuvenate one’s appearance with ‘natural’ fillers using autologous fat. By harvesting unwanted fat tissues from areas of the body such as the abdomen or thighs, fat is transferred to the face to recreate a youthful fullness and more ideal facial contours. This solution has become highly popular as the chances of complications and risks are extremely minimal.

A BEAUTY BREAKTHROUGHA disadvantage of the regular fat grafting procedure is the relatively low survival rate of autologous fat cells. This may require patients to undergo further treatment to sustain the initial effects, or a less natural appearance if surgeons decide to inject an extra amount of fat cells as a precaution against fat degradation. In order to achieve maximum and long-lasting results, it is important to see that the fat tissues are well attached together for a higher fat survival rate.

By extracting stem cells harvested from the body’s own fat and grafting them into desired facial areas together with regular autologous fat cells, the survival rate of engrafted fat is heightened to ensure prolonged results of fat grafting. This revolutionary technique prevents the need for extra injections, as stem cells serve to support fat tissues and accelerate vascularisation by promoting the creation and maintenance of new blood vessels. Moreover, grafted stem cells promote the creation of collagen and secrete growth factors, which improve wrinkles and maintain the facial volume for a longer period of time.

Page 69: Affluent Feb/Mar 2014 Issue

71

Fat is key to maintaining the youthful contours and structure of the face, but is lost over time due to aging.

ONE STEP AHEADIn the long term, patients who opt for the fat grafting procedure will eventually have to prepare themselves for a secondary stem cell grafting. When selecting a hospital for stem cell-enriched fat graft procedure, it is crucial to consider if there is a storage system for the fat cells, along with a professional extraction process. Poor management and not adhering to the right procedures during the process may cause the quality of the extracted and stored fat to degrade quickly. By planning ahead and paying attention to the storage conditions of the stem and fat cells, you can avoid unsatisfying results due to improperly refrigerated or polluted fat tissues.

BK Plastic Surgery Hospital endeavors to provide the abovementioned through its affiliation with Medipost – a front runner in stem cell technology and regenerative medicine – which specialises in the dividing, purifying, storing and defrosting of stored cells to prevent their deterioration. BK Hospital also leverages on its professional storage system with an exclusive cell storage liquid to maximize the viability of the cells. The extracted cells are stored in the freezer at precisely -196℃ to guarantee optimum results, even after the secondary procedure.

The natural aging process is an unavoidable reality of life – but in this exciting era of scientific breakthroughs and possibilities, the visible physical effects of aging can be combated easily. When we maintain a youthful state of mind and body, the future can be beautiful indeed. +

Most women, and some men, have long depended on excess layers of concealer and foundation to mask their imperfections. Yet Akiko Yokota, CEO and Founder of V10 Plus, believes that true beauty does not have to hide its flaws. Allow your naked face to enjoy the vitality and radiance of healthy skin, with three of the latest offerings from The World’s First Skin Supplement Concept from Japan.

LX ADVANCED EYE TREATMENT CREAM Under-eye skin is a problem zone for most, being the most delicate part of the face as well as prone to the signs of aging and less-than-perfect health. BEAUTIFUL SKIN — CLEAN, BRIGHT, GLOWING SKIN WITHOUT ANY MAKEUP.

The cream’s other potent natural ingredients derived from leaves and fruit help to boost the skin’s resistance against dryness, retain moisture to restore elasticity and firmness, and minimise the appearance of blemishes, discoloration and dullness.

V10 PLUS QUASI SERUMSmooth, soft and naturally bright skin can be difficult to achieve if your face, like everyone else’s, is constantly exposed to environmental stress and free radicals. The latest product to join V10 Plus’ innovative range of serums, Quasi Serum focuses on providing your face intensive protection and treatment to prevent hyperpigmentation and battle dull-looking or uneven skin tones, restoring a fairer complexion from within.

The hydrating serum’s active ingredients, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract and Hydrolysed Prunus Domestica, inhibit the formation of melanin pigments to prevent dark spots and freckles from forming. Its promotion of collagen also counteracts skin-aging problems such as fine lines, wrinkles and loss of elasticity.

LX ADVANCED LIFTING CREAM TREATMENTIt is an inevitable part of the aging process that your face will experience a significant loss of collagen, elastin and fat layers, which are crucial elements for maintaining elasticity of the skin and facial contours.

Defy the laws of gravity and aging with the LX Advanced Lifting Cream Treatment, with a combination of active ingredients such as Malus Domestica fruit cell culture extract (apple stem cells), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (sweet almond) seed extract, and Avena Satvia (oat) kernel extract. The effect is a restored youthful appearance with increased collagen production from under the skin’s surface, for a firmer texture and dramatically reduced visibility of wrinkles. +

The Metamorphosis of Paresh Maity

Already renowned in the United States, Europe and India, Paresh looks forward to establishing his presence more firmly among Asian art collectors from China, Japan and South East Asia. The artist says, “At the Art Stage Singapore where I have been showing for the last three years, Chinese collectors have responded to my work, especially the large size watercolours that I have showed last year. I’m excited to show Chinese and South East Asian art aficionados my latest collection Metamorphosis of Colours in my upcoming solo art exhibition in Singapore in January.”

Metamorphosis of Colours sees Paresh Maity drawing upon his memories to paint a set of 12 works that form a visual travelogue, sharing with the viewer artistic impressions of cities visited and people chanced upon. He ranges from the familiar terrain of Banaras and Rajasthan in India to the magic of Krumlov in the Czech Republic.

Celebrating the months of the year the 12 paintings evoke a spirit of festivity. Their joyous, hopeful images capture the ephemeral nature of life and value it the more for its transience.

A native of Bengal, India, the prolific and very versatile Paresh Maity has held more than 60 exhibitions in his lifetime, showcasing watercolours,

oils, sculptures and installations and counts renowned politicians and musicians among his collectors.

Cadmium, primary colors delude the senses and the viewer is left with the impression that a magnificent sun has infused all the images with its radiance. Here is light that lights itself, the resplendent rays of the sun shining bright on the ghats of Banaras as the Ganga ebbs and flows around the ancient steps. Beyond lies the town, its temple spires and homes almost stage lit, a spangle of colours.

Sensuous and deep tones of red, blue and yellow drape the men and women in flowing robes and veils. In the inky desert night, lovers meet in an oasis of glittering campfire light, caressing each other with kohl-rimmed eyes, that burn with passion and desire. The play of light and shadow expose the profiles of the nayaks and nayikas, as they court with music, words and, glances, unaware of the enameled peacocks as they eavesdrop from the eaves, above. +

”“AS MUCH AS THE GOLD COAST BECKONS WITH ITS WORLD-FAMOUS BEACHES AND LANDMARKS, SOFITEL GOLD COAST BROADBEACH CELEBRATES THE THRILL OF

THE GREAT INDOORS.

Idyllically positioned in the heart of the iconic and vibrant Broadbeach, Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach is a gem of its kind. Being a stone’s throw away from Gold Coast’s pristine beaches, premier retail destinations and a fine selection of restaurants, it was naturally the first choice of accommodation for AFFLUENT Magazine’s General Manager, Catherine Ng.

CENTRE OF REVELRYStep out right into Broadbeach’s array of cafes, shops, lush beachside parks and attractions including the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, which features more than 130 fashion and accessory stores and the Gold Coast’s largest Myer store. Says Catherine, “Location is very important to me, and Sofitel offered access to shopping and restaurants within strolling distance. It truly helped to make my mini-break an enjoyable one!”

As the quintessential dining and nightlife mecca of the Gold Coast, the precinct boasts over a hundred bars and restaurants. The hotel offers monorail access to Jupiters Casino, and is a short walk away from the Gold Coast Convention Centre and Surfers Paradise.

BEYOND NECESSITYThe spacious rooms and suites of Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach exude finesse and decadent comfort with contemporary furnishing and a host of extensive and quality amenities. Expect sheer class and convenience with ultra-large flat screen LED televisions, marble bathrooms with a separate bath and shower, and exquisite complimentary toiletries from Roger & Gallet. Sofitel MyBeds also ensure a restful night’s sleep, with a unique pillow menu for an ultra personal touch.

If you are not feeling up for basking among the Gold Coast’s glittering sun and sand, the hotel offers two magnificent pools – one heated to a glorious 24 degrees all year round – for an outstanding lounging experience, with a spa and relaxation area overlooking the Coastal region for a splendid ocean view. Active individuals will delight in the tennis court which is open both day and night, as well as the gymnasium with a wide range of fitness equipment.

FINE DINING TREASURESThe hotel is home to several award-winning chefs who are dedicated to creating an unforgettable culinary journey, even for the most discerning of taste buds. Enjoy leisurely breakfast buffets along with all-day menu offerings by the poolside at Bistro On3 Restaurant, inspired by France’s most popular bistro classics. TC’s Bar & Gaming Lounge on the lobby level of the hotel serves up delicious tipples complete with a superb dining menu, sporting action and gaming entertainment including 35 poker machines and Keno.

For a Parisian sidewalk-styled experience, feast on innovative dishes within the eclectic interior of Room 81, which Catherine praises for its “stylish, clean and chic-looking” design. Says Catherine, “I would strongly recommend the 6-course tasting menu where you get to try a little bit of everything, and the option of matching wines for an additional 70AUD.” She especially took a liking to the restaurant’s Emu Fan dish, which was paired with a 2012 Jed Malbec.

Enjoy a view of the Coastal region, even by the poolside; Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach offers five-star luxury and decadent comfort in more aspects than one.

Sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean or hinterland are available from the private balconies of all rooms at Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach.

THE ART DE VIVREAs much as the Gold Coast beckons with its world-famous beaches and landmarks, Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach celebrates the thrill of the great indoors. The five-star luxury property embraces an elegant yet understated style, with its spectacular three-dimensional artworks and sculptured flower arrangements to take in from the moment you enter its foyer.

Each of its 296 beautifully appointed guest rooms promises sweeping panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean or hinterland from their private balconies. Catherine woke up each morning to a breath-taking sight from the Superior Ocean View room she resided in, which she describes as “perfectly suited for couples or families who want to experience pure luxury with a Gold Coast feel”. +

”“THE RANGE ROVER SPORT HAS THE EQUIVALENT OF A MILD-

MANNERED DRIVING INSTRUCTOR WHO MAKES SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHICH MODES AND GEARS TO SWITCH TO. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS, THIS KNOWLEDGEABLE GENTLEMAN MONITORS YOUR VEHICLE’S PERFORMANCE AND ROAD CONDITIONS MORE THAN 500 TIMES A SECOND.

BORN TO RUNRange Rover’s latest salvo has the

brains and the brawn for both on- and off-road supremacy.

On a pleasant spring afternoon in New York City, Land Rover Global Brand Director John Edwards took the microphone at the unveiling of his automotive corporation’s latest champion, declaring, “the all-new Range Rover Sport is a vehicle that has been designed and engineered without compromise.” Addressing a curious pool of faithful and detractors alike, he divulged, “with Land Rover capability at its heart, it is one of the most road-focussed vehicles we’ve ever produced, but of course still offers unsurpassed all-terrain capability.”

It’s no secret that men prioritise aesthetics above what’s under the hood, and this maxim applies no less to the Range Rover Sport. Rather than appealing to fans of the sporty, curvaceous and Mini-like Evoque, the Range Rover Sport panders to the macho man who prefers his Hummers, Honda Elements and other grimacing,

military-looking vehicles with the robust capabilities to match.

FOLLOW THE LEADERIf you happen to know close to nothing about off-road driving, The Range Rover Sport has the equivalent of a mild-mannered driving instructor who makes suggestions as to which modes and gears to switch to. The only difference is, this knowledgeable gentleman monitors your vehicle’s performance and road conditions more than 500 times a second.

The optional Terrain Response 2 automatically switches the car between General, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand and Rock Crawl, which employ different engine, gearbox, centre differential and chassis settings to tackle any given situation. The intelligent system also advises the driver to change other settings when recommended.

When driving through water, Wade Sensing by Range Rover provides the driver with information about one’s surroundings and gives warnings, which is a boon when one is making his or her way in conditions of low visibility.

Operating automatically, the onboard Adaptive Dynamics system makes sense of road conditions as well as the driver’s actions, in order to negate body roll and optimise stability and control. Meanwhile, the Dynamic Stability Control module keeps track of the understeer during cornering via yaw sensors and reduces the understeer with varying degrees of braking.

Its state-of-the-art Dynamic Response system tunes the front and rear axles for increased control while cruising at high speeds, while the Dynamic Active Rear Locking Differential reacts during cornering and switches the best degree of lock-up for the split-second

scenario. The Torque Vectoring By Braking simultaneously balances the distribution of torque between four wheels and the Range Rover Sport’s arsenal of all-terrain technologies goes on and on.

NEED FOR SPEEDThe Range Rover Sport beats out its predecessor by a good 0.9 seconds, zipping from zero to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. It is driven by a 510PS 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 engine, although 340PS 3.0-litre Supercharged V6 and 292PS SDV6 turbodiesel engines are also options on the table. It so happens that both latter options take the Range Rover Sport from zero to 100km/h in a fairly impressive 7.2 seconds.

Its 8-speed automatic transmission changes gears seamlessly in 0.2 seconds, which also chooses a lower gear in cold conditions for a quicker engine warm-up.

Yes, the hulking Range Rover Sport is also aerodynamically designed, where active vanes, aerodynamic underfloor panelling and enhanced air flow configure the windscreen, grille, pillars, spoiler and main driveline components into an optimum friendliness towards air streams.

Parts like the vehicle’s SMC plastic tailgate, beams, frames, magnesium castings and seats are also crafted from lightweight materials. This so happens to make the Range Rover Sport perform 420kg lighter than it is should, which translates to

tremendous fuel efficiency and agility that both the penny-pincher and speed demon will relish.

75 per cent of the Range Rover Sport’s aluminium is sourced from recycled content, by the way. High-pressure direct injections, smart regenerative charging, electric fans, low viscosity transmission fluids and low-friction designs also considerately cut the carbon dioxide emissions of this Mother Earth-loving car.

TRIAL BY FIREHitherto, Range Rover would not unleash its behemoth upon the world, just yet.

“We have put the Sport through Land Rover’s legendary testing regime, where it has survived 18 months of gruelling tests in the harshest conditions imaginable,” disclosed Range Rover Sport Chief Programme Engineer Stuart Frith. Physical tests in excess of 20,000, conducted in over 20 countries, assailed the would-be flagship of Range Rover, pushing each and every one of its components and systems to the limit.

Besides ensuring Range Rover Sport owners that the all-terrain champ would be able to confidently tackle the most brutal of conditions, Range Rover also guarantees maximum safety. The SUV’s high-strength AC300 aluminium

crash structure, as well as composite reinforced B-post area that is installed to guard against side collisions, were put through 70 full vehicle crash tests. Range Rover Sport also sports air bags along the side curtains, at the thorax, and of course in front of the driver and passenger.

FUN PARKModern systems of sensors and cameras make taking the wheel of the Range Rover Sport quite a ball. These days, everyone wants their car to have Park Assist thanks to that particular viral Volkswagen commercial. Besides that savvy feature, the Range Rover Sport’s Queue Assist means you can sit put and file your nails when caught in slow-moving traffic, and the car will inch itself forward while maintaining a selected cruising speed, and gap between itself and the next vehicle. Closing Vehicle Sensing and Reverse Traffic Detection warn the driver of hazards from all angles, while the Blind Spot Monitoring informs the driver when vehicles encroach from dangerous angles.

BESPOKE BEASTIf Range Rover is successfully sold you its proud new offering, be pleased to know that the Range Rover Sport comes in a diverse array of colours and finishes, while its tailored leather interior can be paired with a variation of genuine wood veneers and aluminium interior finishes. A multitude of parts are available in several colours, while

nine alloy wheel designs come in 19-, 20-, 21- and 22-inch variants. +

Fans of Italian restaurant Bonta, which has closed and looking for a new location, can now enjoy some of its favourite dishes again at the newly-spruced up District 10 at UE Square. That is because its group’s executive chef and partner Luca Pezzera has many fans since his debut in Singapore with the launch of Bonta back in 2007.

District 10 today attracts a good following with a bigger, sleeker bar and a dining room section that offers a comprehensive menu including some of Bonta’s bestselling items and a more extensive wine list. “Our outdoor area appeals to diners who want an al fresco, casual ambience with the option of bar

bites and lots of great cocktails. For the indoors, we decided to take things up a notch and offer a more gourmet menu. We will also offer more than 80 different wines,” says Chef Luca. A private dining room that can seat 12 is also available.

The al fresco area which can seat 38 diners now offers a new menu that has added oysters, crispy goose leg confit, and brand new signature cocktails. A highly recommended drink is its D10 Punch — a blend of Moscato wine, Crème de cassis, dark rum, apples, strawberries, mixed berries and ginger ale — served in a jug that is ideal for a group of three or four people.

For fine dining experience at the Dining Room, more sophisticated dishes can be expected. Popular dishes such as pan-fried goose liver with wild berries sauce and balsamic syrup, and Burratina cheese with peas, sun-dried tomato puree and extra virgin olive oil. Favourites include homemade foie gras ravioli in light parmesan sauce and

scamorza cheese, and homemade angel hair pasta with lobster, peperoncino, basil and fresh tomatoes, both made famous at Bonta. Steak lovers will also enjoy its Signature Black Angus Beef Striploin served with fried eggs and black truffle. Desserts are a must. Chef serves his wonderful traditional Italian tiramisu and also cinnamon apple fritters with icing sugar that are perfect with a cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea.

Those who appreciate wines will love the new wine list as District 10 offers an impressive range including prestigious labels from Europe, such as Antinori and Tenuta. “We plan to host wine-pairing dinners and tastings in the near future,” says Chef Luca, “with boutique wine growers and producers. With our new gastrobar concept, we want to offer our guests really good food and drinks at great prices, with the option of different dining experiences.” +

TOMORROW COMES

TODAYSamsung chimes in on the future

of high-resolution television.

For the discerning consumer who expects premium entertainment for the price he or she forks out, Samsung’s UHD television sets provide a thoroughly satisfying experience that surpasses expectations.

Delivering satisfaction in Ultra High Definition, these elegant offerings realise four times more detailed resolution than that of Full High Definition (HD). These razor-sharp images are created by a state-of-the-art four-step up-scaling digital processing technique. Although available UHD broadcasts, Blu-Ray DVDs and video games are still few and far between at the moment, UHD will slowly but surely be as commonplace as HD in the very near future. While it possesses technology to sharpen certain HD content to UHD, the Samsung UHD TV also scores major points with its upgradeability to higher resolutions in future.

This pageThe Samsung UHD TV’s optional 3D glasses weigh only 23g;Its One Connect box spells to end of multiple tangling wires.

HEY GOOD-LOOKINGA graceful, albeit rigid, silhouette freed from the clutter of cables by its trademarked One Connect system, the Samsung UHD TV can be controlled by voice and also features face recognition via its Skype-friendly, built-in 720p camera.

The brilliant, crisp images that are enjoyed on this market-leading device also have to be credited to Samsung’s one-of-a-kind Quadmatic Picture Engine technology. One is also liberated to full control of this 55- or 65-inch screen by comprehensive calibration options.

The Samsung UHD monitor also achieves a deeper black through its post-modern Ultra Clear Panel and Micro Dimming Ultimate with Precision Black, as well as dimming whites, while advanced images processors further define details transmitted to the screen.

Further enhancing the Samsung UHD TV’s hedonistic experience are 70-watt speakers and woofers that achieve a well-rounded, potent sound.

FUTURE SHOCKAn LCD monitor supported by the active-shutter system of its 3D capabilities, this full three-axis colour offering by the Korean manufacturer can be enjoyed through 23g ultra-light 3D glasses, and has Samsung’s competitors sweating in their pants. Its proprietary panel allows much more efficient light penetration, while motion blur on the 200Hz panel is negated by a scanning backlight and motion interpolation processing.

Powerful picture processing technology is coupled with new techniques to eliminate visual noise and is paired with a three-panel Smart Hub.

Probably the most enthralling of all its features, this princely gadget’s intelligent Smart Hub is by far the most sophisticated of its class and can be controlled by gestures of the hand – fulfilling many a boy’s Minority Report and Iron Man movie fantasies. +

””WHILE THE FABRIC MAVEN OFFERS A HOST OF OFF-KILTER INDOOR AND OUTDOOR OPTIONS, FEW CAN COMPARE TO

THE POIGNANCY OF ITS GRANDEZZA FORAY.

Familiar to millions, Jab Anstoetz’s fabric empire is summarily built upon a simple philosophy. The German label believes that the usage of uncommon fabrics can help one’s living space leave a different, more striking impression. Encouraging builders of new homes to dream with textiles of diversified colours and textures as the centrepieces of both their quarters and work spaces, Jab Anstoetz owns brands like Four Seasons, Soleil Bleu par Wellmann, Chivasso and Carlucci di Chivasso. While the fabric maven offers a host of off-kilter indoor and outdoor options, few can compare to the poignancy of its Grandezza foray. Just as the name of the collection suggests, Grandezza by Jab Anstoetz is an emphatic effort to sway home owners from the lure of convention.

The Angel range makes waves with an expansive array of soft fabrics ideal whose plush textures and murky tones are ideal for sofa covers and curtains. Thick sections of yarn condensed to create a visual of lush ombre are a delight to nestle into, while viscose pile on cotton and jacquard pieces are calibrated for maximum comfort.

Large motifs are applied to striking effect in the Fly Away series, whose fine pea tulle in pink or light grey allows selective transparency through its overlaps. Sparkle encourages one to live with sheen through metallic looks with fetching irregular, wavy and wrinkled effects, while Swinging reinterprets gleaming 1920s interior trends that shimmer from different angles.

The viscose cotton blend and smooth silk of the Mystery series prove a joy to lounge upon as much as they are an elegant sight to behold. Rainbow completes this foray with vertical ribs and horizontal stripes that are given additional volume by a thick double weave. Its sophisticated rosy-pink, petrol and lilac/brown variants have made it a top pick of interior designers. +

The captain of Morrison Bowmore Distilleries recounts his course to success around the world.

Mike Keiller has been reshaping Morrison

Bowmore Distilleries since taking the helm in 2000. The

intrepid CEO has no qualms with the daily challenge of working 12 years

in advance, because he believes that single malts are becoming the holy grail of the discerning connoisseur.

AFF: HOW DID CHANGING DIRECTION HELP BOOST THE POPULARITY OF MORRISON BOWMORE’S SPIRITS?MK: Up till 2004, we were not focussed on single malts and the bulk of our business was blended whisky. We decided to come out of blend and bulk, and to invest in our assets, which are our three distilleries, and become real specialists. We had them very differentiated to offer consumers different experiences.

AFF: WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON EACH OF THE THREE MALTS?MK: We launched Bowmore in a more premium format in 2006 and I’m proud of how well Bowmore has done – it’s now ranked as one of the top 10 global single malts whiskies. It has a fantastic saltiness and smokiness that appeals to people who like a really good quality red wine, like myself. Whereas Auchentoshan is targeted at a younger consumer, because of its taste profile. It’s much more bourbon-esque. It’s more citrus, as well as lighter and fresher, because triple distilled. Thus, its spirit quality is much purer and lighter. Glen Garioch is a unique Highland whisky that is non-chill filtered and steeped in over 200 years of history.

AFF: WHICH MARKETS HAVE BEEN DOING BETTER FOR YOU?MK: In a global sense, Europe has been by far most successful, because it is historically where we built our business. Europe also has very strong duty-free rules, and we produce the number two single malt in the European duty free. Think of our competition like Macallan, Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie. For us, to be number two is a pretty impressive performance for relatively small player in this category. The Asian region is where we’re trying to catch up in many ways. Bowmore is probably one of the most eclectic single malts in the world and is meant for both enthusiasts and luxury consumers. The future in Asia is very strong, that’s why we desire to work strongly in Singapore and Hong Kong with the right people.

“WE LAUNCHED BOWMORE IN A MORE PREMIUM FORMAT IN 2006 AND I’M PROUD OF HOW WELL BOWMORE HAS DONE – IT’S NOW RANKED AS ONE OF THE TOP 10 GLOBAL SINGLE MALTS WHISKIES.

We also wish to provide the opportunity for Chinese consumers to start understanding single malts more in future. Sales in Asia have grown 15 per cent since 2008, and are forecasted to grow to 30 per cent of global sales. That strong track record, not to mention strongest growth globally, has encouraged us to work with key specialists and do a much better educational job. We need to really build a profile and build a really strong culture first. We want our target audience to know that fine whiskies are as accessible to them as fine wines and fine cigars.

AFF: IS IT DIFFICULT PAVING THE WAY FOR A SINGLE MALT CULTURE TO DEVELOP GLOBALLY?MK: I think single malt whisky is the most definitively described liquor among spirit products. The great thing about it is it’s exactly what it says: it’s from one distillery only. Each drop is at least 12 years old and has been made the same way since 1779. We and our ambassadors, coming out of Scotland, just need to tell the truth. I challenge someone to say that there is another spirit product on this earth that is more precise and more crafted than single malts.

AFF: WHAT’S IT LIKE INSIDE THE BOWMORE DISTILLERY?MK: The manager of Bowmore Distillery has been working with us for almost 50 years. He leads a small team that has been making our whisky. We know all our employees, in contrast to mass market alcohol producers. Our Bowmore family around the world is small and it feels quite good to know one another very well. We use the best ingredients and highest quality casks, and take our time – 12 years in fact. We want people to truly enjoy it; it’s truly luxury.

AFF: MANUFACTURING A PRODUCT 12 YEARS AHEAD CAN BE QUITE A CHALLENGE, NO?MK: Thinking of the distilleries that make this. Production for next year, for example, is based on a sales plan for 2025. We ask ourselves questions like how many and what types of casks will be bought. We believe in the future, understanding as much as we can and visualise the future, very much like a game of chess. Another current challenge we face is presenting our products to two billion people in Asia. +

In 1953, Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary rose to the throne of constitutional monarch of the United Kingdom and the rest of the Commonwealth. A momentous and once-in-a-lifetime change-of-guard, its festivities enraptured not just the United Kingdom, but the entire world. Whisky brewing mavens James and John Chivas were no exception. Hailed the world over as living legends during their lifetime, the company they founded, Chivas Brothers, was enlisted to prepare a blend like no other that would pay apt tribute to the ascendant queen.

Following the commissioning of this tall order, Chivas Brothers set out to concoct a regal aroma and taste that would be worthy of Her Royal Highness. What this massive undertaking yielded was a distinguished 2,500-case limited edition blend. Simply named Royal Salute, the Chivas-crafted liquid gold was lauded as an excellent tribute to the new leader of the United Kingdom, and her prosperous years of reign that were to come. Not only was it fashioned to palette perfection, it was also imperially bottled in the colours of the Queen’s crown jewels – red, green and blue. Embellished with the royal crest, its ceramic flagon was specially tailored by master porcelain makers – each bottle a six-day labour of love. Aged for at least 21 years each, the superior issues of Royal Salute take their name from the world-famous 21-gun salute, which the Royal Navy employs to pay tribute to heads of state.

Royal Salute’s passion for the fine maturation of whiskies beats on today. Master Blender Colin Scott has extended this remarkable legacy with two new creations. Named after the legendary stone upon which Scottish kings and queens have been crowned, Royal Salute 38 Year Old Stone of Destiny thrives today as a symbol of Scottish national heritage and

the country’s prowess with whisky. Bottled with a gold cap that remembers traditional Scottish arms of old, each Royal Salute 38 Year Old Stone of Destiny flagon bears a 24-carat gold-plated crest.

Colin Scott also went the extra mile with the Royal Salute 21 Year Old when he unveiled the Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute. Selected by four Master Blenders, only the finest pedigree is set aside from each batch to mature for 40 years and eventually into the Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute. +

Tended to by seasoned veterans in the vaults of Strathisla whose foundations date back to 1786, Royal Salute has also often paid fealty to the refined but intense sport of polo, whose care and respect for horses Royal Salute feels is reflective of how it treats its own produce. A delicate competition of reflexes, endurance and finesse, polo players know that their product is only as good as the condition of their steeds. Originally a Persian sport from centuries gone by, polo caught on around the world. From England to outer

Inner Mongolia, cavalry warriors grew to enjoy the horseback game, and most importantly, recognised its usefulness in simultaneously honing the skills of both horseman and ride.

The first polo club was founded in Calcutta in 1862 by British colonialists, who modernised the game and established its modern-day rules. It effortlessly caught on amongst their peers, as well as the rest of England, which carried its across the world over 200 years of colonial rule. To this day, the dangerous gentlemen’s sport of polo is still utilised to nurture the essential bond between man and his beast.

A fervent supporter of important Singaporean polo events like the Japan Cup and Diplomats Cup, Royal Salute also campaigns behind international polo tournaments like the Campeonado Abierto de Polo in Palermo, Buenos Aires,

HERE TO STAY

Armani/Casa recognises that the most important complement to opulence is a sense of comfort.

The terms comfort and luxury are arguably, completely interchangeable. Armani/Casa toys with the idea of attaining perfect domestic luxury with a semi-circular-themed melee of offerings. The storied interior solutions wing of the Armani dynasty has spearheaded a 2014 endeavour headlined by elegantly blunted corners, traditional spring systems and rich thread counts. Add in a dash of flair and these elements amalgamate to emphatic aesthetic effect, and are most importantly pleasing to the touch.

Elements that usher nature into the Armani/Casa connoisseur’s abode include striped banana tree wood and complementing pieces of Japanese ashwood deliberately given a tranquil zen finish. Alluring eco-friendly pieces adopt forms inspired by those commonly found in nature, in order to perpetuate a sense of harmony in the Armani/Casa house.

The Gerard Sofa

The apparel turned furnishing brand has enjoyed fairytale success since its debut in 2000 in the luxury interior design market. It chose to champion lithe fabrics like damask, jacquard and velvet, which soon became Armani/Casa’s modus operandi. The label has always preferred a palette of lulling colours, which encourage a sense of intimacy in quaint living spaces especially in dim lighting. Giorgio Armani has since diversified with his own brand of Armani Hotels & Resorts, through which the Milanese luminary too asserts his celebrated interior design philosophies. The growing brand has recently shown an acute mastery when applying both matt and sheen, and also offers interior solutions that span modern kitchen and classic bathroom concepts. Besides furnishing luxury yachts like those from Benetti, Armani/Casa’s fixtures and fittings now span numerous Armani standalone boutiques across the world, including its latest that opened in St. Petersburg late last year.

LEAN BACKTake the Armani/Casa Collection 2014’s Gerard sofa for example. Its designers facilitate a unique lounging experience by using a natural rubber and feather down combination for its cushions. Instead the

conventional use of elastic bands, this two- or three-seater sofa pampers one’s thighs, rump and lower back with a gentler system of springs. Sleek feet and frame finished in black nickel gracefully suspends the sofa’s plush silhouette a short distance above ground. The Gerard is also available as a chaise longue, with optional right and left armrests or elements. An armchair and footrest are also available.

TABLE TALKThe rounded Giunone desk propagates a certain harmony to its enclosing surroundings. Available in dark grey or natural-coloured soft leather, its vintage brown oak body is trimmed with pale gold details. The Giunone has a straight top model and a curved top model, both armed with four drawers including one extra large drawer one each side that rotate open and are lockable with a single key.

LOOK SHARPArmani/Casa understands the intimate connection a lady makes with her makeup table. In this mentality, the lauded furniture label created its Glam coiffeuse – its trademark metal handles detail a piece sufficiently capacious for housing all of one’s beauty needs. The pampered lady is allowed to choose between one in textured chevron wood and another design crafted from twisted banana tree. This curvaceous piece, which is trimmed in pale gold similar to its complementing pieces of the 2014 collection, sports a lighted mirror with a magnified section that extends from its pristine horizontal surface. This reflector is rotatable on two axes and is plied by soft LED lights along its circumference. Seated upon the glam coiffeuse’s comfy matching stool, she simply needs to move her hand to switch its light on or off. +
