Region III Chapter Report – Daytona State College

July 2010

1. Political Activities: the Daytona State College chapter created a dedicated Web page informing members of the primary mission of FACC with links to FACC legislative issues as well as guidelines when contacting Representatives. The URL to the Web site is http://www.daytonastate.edu/facc/tallahassee.html, in addition, the Chapter President sent e‐mail regular e‐mails to members as well as non‐members to highlight legislative updates. The chapter is currently working with Daytona State SGA to bring local, state and federal candidates and their representatives to the Daytona Beach Campus on Sept. 22 for a “Meet the Candidates” activity.

2. Social Activities: The chapter promoted a fundraising wine tasting event (May 6) at the local wine warehouse – the event raised more than $550 for animal rescue organizations in Volusia County.

3. Educational Activities: the chapter encouraged members to attend a Hurricane Safety seminar presented by the College’s Campus Safety Department.

4. Fundraising Activities: the chapter received a letter of appreciation from the West Volusia Habitat for Humanity for a $142.50 donation – the result of a college‐wide used stamp collection effort that’s headed up by chapter member, Norm Shepard. Raising funds for the chapter, tickets sales to win a gift basket were promoted in April – the activity was also used to recruit new members and encourage donations to the local animal rescue organization, Second Chance Rescue that was ”adopted” by the chapter in 2009.

5. Community Service Activities: Members supported the United Ways “Stuff the Bus” project by collecting basic school supplies, personal care item such as clothes, toothpaste, and shampoo for distribution to Title 1 schools if Volusia and Flagler counties. Recognizing the Chapter’s penchant for community service activities, the West Volusia Habitat for Humanity invited members to volunteer for a “Yard Crashing” challenge – this was accomplished on Saturday, July 10.

6. Participation in Regional Activities: On June 24, the Daytona State College Chapter of the Florida Association of Community Colleges sent three representatives to the Region III Spring

Conference held at the Webber Center in Ocala, Florida. Above (pictured L‐R), Daytona State College Chapter President, Alison Ryan, Immediate‐Past President, Charlene Latimer, and chapter member, Ted Wygant participated in the Conference Workshops designed to increase understanding of interpersonal communication in the workplace. FACC COO Marsha Kiner, State FACC President Dr. Martha Williams, and Vice-President for Regions and Chapters, and Computer Specialist Adrienne Bryant addressed the Conference with information about the just completed legislative session in Tallahassee, the goals and purpose of the FACC, and the resources available to all members. Attendees also visited the Webber Center Art Gallery to view the current traveling display entitled “Carnival”. Despite sustaining a severe paper cut that fortunately did not require a call to EVAC, Ted Wygant stated, “As a newly recruited member of FACC, I welcomed the opportunity to find out more about this organization and look forward to attending the annual Convention later this year.”

7. Participation in State Activities (Conferences and Conventions): Both Chapter President, Alison Ryan, and Chapter Secretary, Beth Hoodiman attend the Leadership Conference in February; Immediate‐Past President, Charlene Latimer attended the Faculty Commission and Student Development Commission’s Joint Spring Conference; and three members attended the Region III Spring Conference (June 24, 2010) – Alison Ryan, Charlene Latimer and Ted Wygant.
