SUPER-CLEAN RELIABILITY

Particulates in hydraulic fluids

Can cause system failures through valve sticking, wear and blockages in nozzles and tubes

Are specially challenging for modern hydraulic systems that operate at high pressures and have components with tight tolerances

“Super clean” describes fluids with particle contamination below set levels.

Super cleanliness requires additional precautions during manufacturing, including

Multistage filtration

Pre-cleaning of containers

Packaging operations in a clean room

13 October 2015 19 AeroShell fluids

Shell Aviation

SUPER-CLEAN RELIABILITY

To be classed as super clean, the fluid must meet the following requirements:

13 October 2015 20 AeroShell fluids

Size range Maximum/100 ml

5 to 15 μm 10,000

>15 to 25 μm 1,000

>25 to 50 μm 150

>50 to 100 μm 20

>100 to 150 μm 5

Solid particle contamination: number of particles allowed in different size ranges

STORING AND CHANGING FLUIDS

13 October 2015 45 AeroShell fluids

Shell Aviation

BEST PRACTICES FOR USING AND STORING AEROSHELL FLUIDS

Adopt a first-in, first-out principle

Store in conditions free from heat, moisture and dust

If outside storage is necessary, drums should be lain on their sides or tilted to prevent water from entering the bung opening or collecting on the barrel top where it could cause corrosion

Clean the top of barrel before opening

Reseal after each use

Use a proper dispenser to guard against contamination

Use a transfer pump with a filter to transfer fluid from the barrel to a storage container

13 October 2015 46 AeroShell fluids

Shell Aviation

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CHANGING FLUIDS

AeroShell mineral and synthetic hydrocarbon hydraulic fluids are completely compatible and miscible with each other.

This compatibility makes changeover easy and can be accomplished in one of two ways:

Draining the aircraft’s hydraulic system of old fluid and filling it with new fluid

Topping up the reservoir with new fluid as needed

Always refer to the relevant aircraft maintenance manual to confirm the changeover method.
