Current Use of the CIMCurrent Use of the CIM

• External Model Updates• Ability to Quickly Merge in External Models

– Data is current and available– Approximately 4 hour process to Merge Models– Normally Merge models 4-5 times a year.

• CIM Incremental files used for some model changes to ERCOT.

Benefits for AEPBenefits for AEP

• Lower Manpower to Update External Models– No need to track external construction as closely.– Getting data from neighboring TO’s a challenge.– Merge process quick and can be completed and online in

a couple of days.• Data is always up to date

– TO’s model data in ERCOT systems– Data is current and available.

• Better Models and Solutions– Better Model for State Estimation and Contingency

analysis.– Real-time data for entire network.– ERCOT and AEP see the same problems.

ProblemsProblems

• Model Exchange and Model Merge very different functions.

• ERCOT has added many CIM extensions.• We do not see a lot of RTO support across

the country.• Large Learning Curve.• Vendors License fee’s pose problems to

merging in large external models.

ImprovementsImprovements

• More work needs to be done on how the industry will handle model exchange with CIM extensions.

• From an implementation standpoint, the process to move to the CIM for model exchange and incremental updates is not clear. There needs to be better ways to communicate what is involved to synchronize models to allow that to happen.
