What is GLOBAL G.A.P.?
Copyright AEON AGRI CREATE CO., LTD. All Rights Reserved.
Characteristics of GLOBAL G.A.P.
To make maximum effective use of limited management
resources, the following are included:
① HACCP (risk evaluation) concepts,
② IPM (Integrated Pest Management) methods, and
③ Checks of management status by impartial third parties
GGAP characteristics
GAP will not be sustainable if management is not sustainable
GLOBAL G.A.P. are GAP standards created by FoodPlus, a Germany-based private company.
These are practical global GAP standards, primarily in Europe and NA
Number of farms that have GLOBAL G.A.P. certification throughout the world (as of the end of June 2016):
Approx. 160,000 farms (of which, 399 are Japanese farms)
GLOBAL G.A.P. certification is a “passport” for exporting agricultural produce

TCGF (The Consumer Goods FORUM)
This organization establishes global standards for consumer goods
GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative)
This is a Belgian non-profit foundation and a subordinate body to TCGF (The Consumer Goods Forum). It is comprised of major global retailers, manufacturers, and food service companies. It aims to continuously lower food safety risk by achieving equivalence and consistency among food safety standards.

AEON
オリンピックでの食材提供を目指して…
In December 2016, standards were proposed for agricultural produce procurement for the Tokyo Olympics.
The policy established was to procure food primarily from producers that have GLOBAL G.A.P. or JGAP Advance certification.
・Implemented AEON GAP, which is based on EurepGAP (today, GLOBAL G.A.P.)
・Implemented process control for production and processing compliant with TCGF and GFSI
・Formulated supplier code of conduct (CoC)
In order to build a management scheme founded on global standards…
We aim to supply food at the Tokyo Olympics!

Aimed at GGAP certification since the company’s founding and pursued institutional design to that end. Began the certification process in 2010. In 2011, certification was acquired not for individual farms but “multi-site” (HQ + multiple farms). Plans to acquire certification for all directly-managed farms in FY 2016.

Checklists as GAP implementation tools
< Examples from GGAP Ver.4: Control Points and Compliance Criteria (CPCC) >
Standard no.
Control points = Points examined
Level Compliance criteria = When can something be said to be “compliant”
AF. 3.2.2
Is there a sanitation instruction document directed at all workers?
Low
A clear instruction document needs to be posted in a place that is easy to see, for example clear signs (diagrams) or something written in the workers’ primary language. This document must contain instructions on at least the following items: -Importance of hand-washing -Wrapping cuts and wounds -Smoking, eating, and drinking at designated locations -Notices pertaining to contagious infection and health, including symptoms of illness (e.g. vomiting, jaundice, diarrhea). Individuals with these symptoms must not directly touch products or surfaces that will touch products. -Wearing proper protective clothing. No exceptions.
New farmers do not know and cannot determine what on the farm is dangerous and what they need to manage and control.
I see! We need to pay attention to these sorts of
matters!

Recognize the effectiveness of risk assessment
Contents of procedure documents created by HQ are not actually implemented on-site!
Increasing impotency of rules
How do we create rules that can be executed at the actual worksite? How do we make on-site staff feel that the rules are necessary?
Begin response with problems that are actually plaguing the worksite in the present
Thoroughly implement measures to prevent accidents and accidents that have actually occurred in the past from ever happening again
・Prioritize problems via risk assessment ・Focus not on “response” but on “prevention” (HACCP approach)
Recognize the effectiveness of
these approaches

Link GAP with standard operations
<For example, agrochemical spraying operations>
Input plans for agrochemical spraying into the system
Within the cloud system, the following are possible: ・Comparison with registered agrochemical information (to check for violations) ・Stored cultivation records ・Storage (stock) management ・Checking the number of days until harvest ・Cost analysis ・Creating image reports etc.
Input screen that includes record-keeping items as
required by GLOBAL G.A.P.
HQ and/or individual farms can output reports in the required format at any time (in compliance with GGAP)
Spraying in accordance to the instructions output by the system

(Food safety) Proper agrochemical storage
Accident response equipment are all placed near the agrochemical
dispensing area
・Agrochemicals must be stored in locked containers ・Must be marked as poisonous ・Powders on top, liquids on bottom ・Fire- and water-resistant materials ・Measuring tools must be calibrated every year ・Stocktaking of agrochemicals must be conducted at least once every three months
Liquid medicines should be stored in trays because they may topple over and spill their
contents

• Test seed rice used • Perform test on hulled
unpolished (brown) rice
• Test all water sources in accordance with the Waterworks Law • Conduct separate tests if there is a risk of water pollution
• Perform test on new fields and before expanding farms to investigate for environmental contamination or cultivation-related risk
• Perform before planting from a plant nutrition perspective to serve as reference data during fertilization planning
• Measure microbial biomass (etc.) in order to measure soil productivity
• Once test per year for each farm and commodity
• Increase testing frequency for “hot spots” • Also conduct voluntary tests on compost
and other materials used on fields
• Test before shipment for each farm and commodity • Samples taken from high-risk locations • Testing criteria suited to the agrochemicals used • Also check whether there are problems in the planting
log history • If unused agrochemicals are detected, conduct an
investigation into possible causes

How to call an ambulance 1) Dial 119 2) Say, “It’s an emergency!” 3) Communicate address and landmarks
4) Explain when, who, why, and how
5) State your name and contact number
Report to superiors. Use a redundant coverage—a bandage over the wound and plastic gloves, etc.—to avoid touching the produce directly.
Stabilize the affected part Chill the wound
Stop the bleeding Raise the affected part
For big injuries, first calm down and then call 119
<Basic treatment: RICE method>
To prevent heat stroke… 1) Frequent liquid and salt intake 2) Take plenty of rest and shorten continuous working hours 3) Wear cool clothing and rest in a comfortable location 4) Allow your body to gradually adapt to the heat 5) Do not overwork or continue working more than you can handle
Emergency treatment for heat stroke 1) Move to a cool location 2) Loosen clothes to cool the body down 3) Supply saline solution (0.9% salt water) 4) Lie down and raise legs
If you lose consciousness or cannot drink water, call 119 immediately!

(Environmental conservation) IPM
IPM (Integrated Pest Management)
This refers to cultivation techniques by which we can make intelligent use of agrochemicals Initiatives that do not stop agrochemical usage, but rather combine biological, physical, chemical, tilling, and sowing techniques and technologies in order to enable the effective use of agrochemicals
・Cut weeds that serve as pest breeding grounds
・Use bug-catching nets
・Select disease-tolerant plant varieties
・Sterilize equipment
・Use mulch
・Patrol fields
・Pheromone traps
・Collect local insect forecasting and prediction information
・Identify natural enemies
・Rotation spraying
・Use agrochemicals that stop natural enemies
