Xavier High School A & E 12 Kayla Fuller ‘16 Kayla Fuller has only been at Xavier for four weeks, but have you gotten to know her yet? Who’s in the hallway? Meghan Gerke A&E Writer 8 and ran until August 19. The musical was based off of the hit Disney Channel movie, also called Camp Rock. Diebold accepted a lead role as Mitchie Torres, and Elkema participated as a Camp Rocker. The show is about two feuding musical camps, Camp Rock and Camp Star, that battle it out for the best summer camp after Torres convinces them to do a showdown. “I had so much fun dancing and singing in the show,” Elkema said. “It reminded me why I love the stage so much.” Some shows at TCR to look forward to include Legally Blonde, The Wizard of Oz, Our Town, and Spring Awakening. Tickets are available for these shows at TCR’s website, www.theatrecr.org, and cost anywhere from 15-20 dollars. Hairspray and camp rock at TCR Four Xavier students took part in Theater Cedar Rapids’ productions of Hairspray and Camp Rock this summer. Junior Ameena Challenger and sophomore Alea Challenger participated in Hairspray while juniors Meredith Diebold and Angelica Elkema took part in Camp Rock. Hairspray, directed by Leslie Charipar, took place July 6 through July 28. Both of the Challenger girls earned roles as Motormouth Kids. The musical is set in the 1960’s and follows a young girl named Tracy Turnblad, who lives in segregated Baltimore. Turnblad tries to integrate her favorite television show after gaining a role as one of their lead dancers. “I loved Hairspray,” Alea said, “not just because of the singing and dancing, but because the costumes and hair were so realistic!” Directed by Lovar Davis Kidd, Camp Rock premiered on August Emma Hunt A&E Assistant Editor The cast of Hairspray concludes the show on a high note, ending their final show of the summer after a total of 14 performances at Theater Cedar Rapids. Practices are held Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. The Back to School Dance, which was put on by the Poms Squad, took place on Friday, August 17 in the Mount Mercy Practice Gym. They collected $5 or $3 with a canned food item donation. The cans collected were donated to the St. John’s Catholic Worker House. “My favorite part of the Back to School Dance was getting to reconnect with friends I hadn’t seen in awhile and having fun with my fellow pommies,” sophomore Madison Recker said. Their first competition was on Saturday, August 25 at Westdale Mall. They placed second behind Linn-Mar. Western Dubuque placed third. October 26, the Poms will be competing at Pack the Stands at Prairie High School. The State Pom Competition will be held on December 1 in Des Moines. The Poms are also attending Nationals in Orlando, Florida at the end of their season. She loves dancing at Studio Dance and cheerleading for the freshmen football team. Kayla is looking forward to cheering for the basketball team and competing in show choir. Kayla’s favorite time of the school day, other than when she is in Mr. Goldsmith’s World Civilization class, is lunch. Most days you can see her enjoying peanut butter and apples that she packed for herself. When Kayla is not at school she likes to go see the latest movie with her friends. She also loves to go shopping. One of Kayla’s favorite stores to shop at is Forever 21. Hunt Photo

Kayla Fuller is a freshman at Xavier. She loves dancing at Studio Dance and cheerleading for the freshmen football team. Kayla is looking forward to cheering for the basketball team and competing in show choir.

Kayla’s favorite time of the school day, other than when she is in Mr. Goldsmith’s World Civilization class, is lunch. Most days you can see her enjoying peanut butter and apples that she packed for herself.
